How to unlock the Veteran achievement in Mass Effect 3 - Definitive Guide

As i started my 3rd playthrough in the beginning(the prologue) i noticed to run into an amazing glitch that helps towards the 5000 kills. As i played after the part where the ship blows up in the sky and knocks you and Anderson down to the injured soldier, you get the the semi cutscene with the cannibals shooting at you. From this point it will ask you to take cover on the wall, DONT. If you never take cover on the walls then the enemies across the water will continue to spawn forever, i had 3800 kills when i started and got my achievement in about a hour or so. Also remember to put the difficulty on Narrative. This method is boring but it gets the job done.

fast incinerates/lifts can be gotten here too

You could prob stick an engineer out there with the turrets and just let that do the work also

I think you can do something similar just after picking up the radio too - but only as long as you don't run out of ammo. I'll start a new game again later to double-check but I was just going nuts with Warp and Dark Channel and they just kept spawning.

I would like to suggest standing where the ammo respawns, you won't even have to bother with the LS that way. Just stand there and pick off cannibals a la Resident Evil...

Great method. I had 2500 kills after doing insanity on my first run and got my 5000 in about an hour and a half hitting the cannibals with incinerate. I stood in the back right corner of the area on a small hill and aimed right at the fire where they spawn. i set my turbo controller up to do the work and never got close to getting killed.

Probably because some people get bent out of shape that you use an efficient method to get this in under 2 hours as opposed to playing 20 hours of MP. If you want to do it that way because you enjoy the MP more power to you, some don't enjoy it and this is a great alternative.

Just wanted to update that once I got the methodology down and got into a groove, I was getting 500 kills every 12 minutes.

I got 1600-1700 in my first and only play through ME3, got a few hundred here and there trying out new classes through Mars, a few hundred in MP and my last 2300 or so using this solution. Wish I'd have seen it sooner because it would've motivated me to get this achievement and do MP so I could've 1k'd the game a week ago lol.

Thank God for this guide/glitch(?). I was reset after playing through twice with my kills at 4800. It's a bit of a balls-ache, I managed 2,500 in about 2 hours. But better than playing 80+ hours to go through the game twice more.

How do you check how many kills you have? I know in ME2 you had the console you could use in Shepherd's quarters. Is there anywhere like that where you can track achievements like this? Instead of waiting an hour for the next 1,000 increment to pop?

A good idea is to save your game when you get the ammo just in case you mess up somehow, it cuts a few minutes off that you have to go through if you restart the mission.

This is by far the most efficient method. Was the last cheevo I needed after my insanity run. A really useful power is 'flare' if you've done the omega dlc as it pretty much just makes a big explosion which means faster killing!

i was reset twice so i decided to use this guide to finish my 5000. i got 500 kills every 20 minutes exactly. i used incinerate, combat drone, and sentry target playing on casual using my engineer. all 3 were level 5 so if they were maxed out at 6 i am positive it would take shorter than 20 min for 500 kills. i did 550 kills in 30 minutes on 1 run playing normal using the same powers listed.

when i jumped down and saw the 2 injured soldiers, i went all the way to the right and backed up as much as i could. i shot my drone and sentry over and then tagged my left bumper with incinerate andshot it every 2 seconds for a kill because its on casual. as long as the drone is bothering the enemy, u will never get shot. sometimes u will wipeout all the enemy, just wait a few seconds and they will respawn, if u move forward u will be advanced to the next cutscene and have to wait several minutes to try again.

To make this go even faster, import an ME2 character to ME3 and make them an Engineer (this is so you have some stat points to allot).

Put the game on Narrative difficulty.

Upgrade Incinerate to Rank 5 to increase radius, damage and recharge time.

Upgrade Turrets to Rank 5 for damage.

Upgrade Tech Mastery to Rank 6 concentrating on damage and weight reduction.

Spend any left over stat points how you see fit.

Once at the site where this solution takes place, move as far right as you can on top of the mound of rubble. Toss a turret in the area where the Cannibals spawn. This keeps the Cannibals clustered together and focusing on the turret. Now just unload with Incinerate. With the added impact radius of 2 meters, you should hit most (if not all) the Cannibals around the turret and you don't even have to move your targeting reticle.

Nice solution and thumb up!

The kills are counted across different careers. So, if you want, you may use a different career with a save at the beginning of the game.

I accidentally took cover on my main save, so I just started a new one and the kills were counted across both saves.

FOR ANYONE WHO HAD THIER KILLS RESET!!!! (like me)

FOLLOW strikers guide to get you to the area.

BUT FIRST .... You want to be an engineer to boost this so if you were not an engineer in me3 don't import a me3 character as it may not let you choose to be an engineer.

Instead import a me2 character and you WILL get the option to choose a class... Pick engineer and as soon as you can go to the squad screen. Spend points on sentry turret and level it up to six picking the following options ...

Rank 4 - shields and damage
Rank 5 - cryo ammo
Rank 6 - flamethrower

This will allow your sentry to last long and do major damage and also freeze the enemies quite often.

Now select tech mastery and level it to 6 picking the following ....

Rank 4 - power damage
Rank 5 - damage and capacity
Rank 6 - DRONE MASTERY

Rank 6 is super important it allows your drones to be super drones!

Now select combat drone and boost it to the highest level you can choosing the following....

Rank 4 - shields and damage
Rank 5 - shields and damage
Rank 6 - chain lightening

Now you can choose to be lazy and allow both the drones to kill for you which will take about 4 to 5 hours to obtain 5,000 kills OR you can use both drones and shoot enemies as well with the pistol which will take about 1 to 1.5 hours to obtain 5,000 kills. You will need to keep an eye on the drones either way because they will die sooner or later. It seems that the sentry drone lasts 3 to 5 times longer than the combat drone.

Or you could do a little of both like I did, it took me 3 hours and I only shot the enemies for about 30 minutes.

Also just stand to the far right where the ammo spawns and send your drones across from that spot.... It's the optimal spot to place them.

I suggest doing this all in one session as you don't want to risk being reset again as it has happened to many people multiple times!

Good luck! Any questions feel free to ask.

Update:

FYI you can also add that using a turbo controller then you can just let it run for you over night just turbo the combat drone button.

I picked missle to try it out and found that it kills slower because it's long range and the drone is close.... So infact the other option is better because it kills more efficiently since it's close range.

Yep like I said just spend what you have. You don't need to 6 bar the drone. I would 6 bar mastery and turret, then spend the rest on the drone.

I could only 4 bar my drone and it worked great.

Good guide. I turboed it and used incenerate on my Y turbo and combat drone on the LB. Just put shepard in the back right hand corner and he spammed incinerate (1 shotting) while the drone drew fire and killed some. Seemed pretty fast. When i came back I did notice I died....but not before getting 2600 kills.

Not working for me. Was this patched? The cavalry keeps showing up no matter where I stand and I have to keep reloading quick. Anyone know if this resets my kills? If not I don't mind doing it like that but I'm worried because I've been doing it for a bit and haven't gotten a status update on the achievement.

Thanks for the idea. I finished the game with 2500 kills (almost exactly somehow) and even though I plan on playing through again at some point, I want the achievement now-ish.

I started timing it after I got to 3000 kills and I got the next 500 in about 15-17minutes using this method (though not the same points set up, I'll admit I forgot where I should put the points exactly towards the end of the trees).

I'm not exactly sure of that time frame is going to pan out for everyone but it might be something in the set up:

First (because of what I said about the points) I only had enough points (30) to max out only Tech Mastery and the Combat Drone, and only got the Turret to the 5th tier. I chose freeze rounds for the turret, and Instead of the chain lighting for the Drone, I picked the missile.

When I threw the Sentry over I did it right at the right edge of where the Cannibals come out, maybe just about exactly ahead of that thermal clip you mention standing on. The enemies would pool here and just ask to be shot, most of which would get shot before they're ever out of the ground. The combat drone would finish them off with a missile, usually killing more then one off at a time. The missile itself would one shot cannibals even if they weren't frozen first.

Only problem to it was there were instances where the turret might get stormed and die off prematurely, but I was also shooting the cannibals most of the time, just to have something to do in between placing drones and turrets. And there would be the odd cannibal that would spawn further to the left and not get targeted (or would target me instead.)

Didn't get the achievement yet though, even going this fast its still out-of-my-mind boring.

Good solutions. Mine is probably about the same amount of time, but doesn't require any special character configuration or change to the difficulty setting. It can't be done hands-off as with the drones method, but it's much safer than picking random close-encounter battles (trying for the achiement through normal play).

There's a mission not too far into the game where you have to rescue a Primarch from Paleven's moon. There's a place in this mission where you climb a ladder and take control of a mounted turret. At that point, two waves of Husks start approaching the barricade, and you pretty much just blast them away from a distance with the mounted gun.

If you have a save before this mission or somehwere near the beginning of it, find it and then make another save just before climbing up the ladder. That will give you a load point between rounds.

Load, climb the ladder, blast both waves of Husks, and then when the cutscene kicks in with the Brute knocking you off, just quickly skip through the cutscenes (takes about a second or two to skip) so that you see the "saving" message. Now just reload the save before the ladder, climb up, and repeat.

I seem to be getting 25 to 35 kills each round, and the round doesn't last long if you get into a good groove. I haven't timed it, but I seem to be getting about 500 kills in under half an hour using this method.

Maybe not the best, buf it might work for somebody close to the 5000 target and just needs a few hundred more.

(Update) Yeah, I timed it, and I got about 35 kills in less than 2 minutes. Factor in the loading time, and it should be possible to get somewhere around 500 kills every half hour. Gets boring after a while, of course.

I just finished this achievement and wanted to let you all know of a fantastic spot I found. Spoilers below..

So on the final mission, Priority Earth when you first land you are sent to take out a cannon using heavy weapons from a downed shuttle, once you destroy the cannon it shift to a sequence where you are waiting for extraction. You will know this started as a Banshee comes up over the edge.

So you kill the banshee them move over to where the enemies will endlessly re-spawn. The shuttle will arrive, DO NOT GET ON. Cannibals will spawn endlessly in fairly rapid succession here. Kill as many as you can as fast as you can until the shuttle explodes, game over screen, hit continue and you start right as the banshee comes up.

I was getting 30-50 kills, if you have the ability pickup Aria's Flare ability. Great AOE killer.

Good luck! and remember easier difficulty makes this quicker, you can even place a save right after Cortez goes down.

I just wanted to let you know that playing multiplayer also increases your kill count towards veteran. I had about 2,000-2,500 kills after a few playthroughs of the game. After playing online I noticed the kill progression chart appearing every once in awhile. Didn't take me too long to get past 3,500 so it is not fast but will help along the way to getting defender and master and commander achievements as well

A quick and easy way to unlock this achievement is through the DLC 'The Citadel'. In the Armax Arena location there is a place you can fight against holograms but each kill you get counts towards your kill count. Each match you can get about 30 kills and if you are at about level 60 with good weapons and upgrades, playing on Narrative difficulty with the arena enemy on footsoldier difficulty without teammates you can get through the match in about 1 -2 minutes. You can get around 1800 kills per hour. I am not sure how quickly you can get through a match at lower levels. If you can think of a way for me to improve this let me know.

I found an alternative as well. In the Citadel DLC, once you have beaten the story part you gain access to a combat arena, where you fight waves of enemies, with or without sqadmates. If you play without sqadmates you can net 30 odd kills per match, and make some extra credits along the way. It can be a little slow, but it's still pretty fun rather than tedious. I've gotten around 200 kills in about an hour.

The best way to do it is by importing any ME3 character with NG+, selecting the Carnage ability, upgrade it as much as you can, and changing the difficulty to "Narrative". After the scene where Sheperd and Anderson find a couple of survivors, you all will be attacked by the Cannibal enemies. Back out of cover and DO NOT reenter it! After clearing the initial 3, only aim for the middle Cannibal spawn. Ignore the one on the left. You can literally stand in one place the entire time, not worrying about ammo, or even have to aim and get 2400 kills/hr. If you use the pistol at all, the Cannibals don't always respawn right away, but they do if all you use is Carnage.

Pretty self-explanatory. The good thing here is that the kills that count towards this trophy are the totals over all playthroughs and in online play. You’ll easily get this over the course of the game. Also, any kills that you had before you died are not reset, they will count to your total. I ended up my first playthrough on Insanity with about 1800 kills, so there will be some grinding for this trophy.

Reapers

  • Husk - Basic reaper enemy. Swarms you with melee attacks. Has a single health bar.
  • Cannibal - The other basic reaper enemy. Hangs back, shoots, and attempts to flank from cover. Also uses grenades. Will consume fallen cannibals to restore health. Has a single health bar.
  • Marauder - Frequently uses cover and shoots at you. Can restore health to husks and cannibals. Has a shield and health bar.
  • Ravager - Mobile turret. Fires three shots before requiring a recharge. Releases swarmers from it's egg sac. Has a single armor bar.
  • Banshee - Uses Biotic Charge to come straight at you. Will kill you instantly when it grabs you. Uses a Nova like power to stun you and drain your shields. Also uses a projectile attack that will wipeout your shields and wear down your health. Has a barrier and health bar.
  • Brute - Very large enemy that charges enemies. Getting hit with a charge will wipe out your shields. Also has a powerful close range melee attack. Has a single armor bar.
  • Harvester - Spawns other basic reaper enemies like husks, cannibals, and marauders. Has a powerful beam attack that will wipe out your shields. Has a single armor bar.
  • Swarmers - Small insect like enemies that are released from ravagers. Extremely weak, but easy to miss on the battlefield. Will leap at you and and slowly drain your shields.

Cerberus

  • Assault Trooper - The basic Cerberus enemy. Fires from range and utilizes grenades, but will use a melee attack if you get close. Has a single health bar.
  • Centurion - The other most common Cerberus enemy. Uses smoke grenades to hide and move around. Will fire from cover and use grenades. Has a shield and health bar.
  • Combat Engineer - Constructs turrets and can repair them. Has a shield and health bar.
  • Nemesis - Cerberus sniper units. Stays in cover and fires at you. Targeting is indicated by the red laser. Has a shield and health bar.
  • Phantom - Very fast moving enemy that can shoot lasers from their hands and has a powerful melee attack. Has a barrier and a health bar.
  • Atlas - Extremely powerful enemy. Fires missiles and cannons at you. Has a shield and health bar that are both very strong and will take many hits to bring down.
  • Guardian - Carries a shield in front and uses it as cover to shoot out from behind. Biotic powers can knock them back or take away the shields. Has a small opening in the shield to see through that can be used for a head shot. Has a single health bar.

Geth

  • Trooper - The basic geth enemy. Like the Cerberus trooper and cannibal, it will shoot at you. Unlike those two, it will not use grenades. Has a single health bar.
  • Rocket Trooper - Fires rockets at you from cover. A single rocket will knock you out of cover and drain your shields. Has shield and health bars.
  • Hunter - Stays cloaked and attempts to flank you. Is slightly stronger than the regular troopers, but the cloaking makes them a bit tougher. Has shields and health bars.
  • Prime - The toughest geth enemy. Has a powerful gun that will drop your shields quickly. Also deploys combat drones and turrets. Will continually move towards you. Has a powerful shield and strong armor bars.
  • Pyro - The geth close range trooper. It will lessen the distance between you and attack with flamethrowers. Has shields and a health bar.

This is a lot of enemies to kill. If you die, the enemies you killed will have counted. Therefore, it is technically possible to get this in one playthrough of the campaign. If not, you may get the rest in another playthrough or within the multiplayer "wave" based gametype.

Note: Even after dying, the ones you have obtained count. They count across all playthroughs as well as multiplayer (which you can play by yourself).

The most, um, stupid trophy in the game.
During my run on madness, I shot about 1800 enemies. Knocking out 100% readiness - about a thousand more.

The single has a wonderful place where enemies respawn endlessly. Take an engineer, or any class with ignition , upgrade to level 4 and take area ignition, set the difficulty to “narrative”.
In the prologue, we go with Andersen until the moment where you meet two soldiers, you will be automatically put in a shelter and the prompt “press for guidance and for shooting", instead we get up from behind cover and begin to burn opponents. Opponents will appear until we shoot one while sitting in cover. With a cooldown on Ignition of 2.5s, we get about 50 enemies per minute( because it burns two at a time). As a result, about 500 opponents in 10 minutes.

So I went from 2800 to 5000 in less than an hour. This is clearly faster than multiplayer or replaying the game.

Here is a visual video (by the way, I didn’t know that there were endless cartridges, lol) of this moment.

If suddenly the online game is dead, and it’s boring to boost in one place, you can install the DLC MASS EFFECT 3 - Citadel. It will bring to the game a virtual arena where you can earn extra credits, and most importantly, KILLING BOTS ON IT COUNT INTO THE TOTAL COUNT FOR THE TEACHED 5000.

Immediately after ME2 I started going through everything in madness. Completed all missions - total 600 kills. The thing is - the small shushara was knocked down by a mixture: Liara’s singularity + Shepard’s throw (guard), the enemies scattered in all directions and immediately died, hitting the walls and flying into the abyss. Therefore, the murder did not count. So if you want to knock out a trophy faster, burn and shoot.

Multiplayer is now very laggy and getting kills in it is still torture, the company for the second time takes a long time, after opening the map 100%, I immediately switched to the arena from the Citadel DLC, you put super elite enemies (I played against Cerberus) and a small map, like "Sera" or "Classic Armax". 30+ kills in an average of 3 minutes, you can’t get it faster anywhere. As a result, I scored almost 2500 kills in about 4 hours

In a single player, 1 playthrough costs about 1700-1800 franks. If you can't transfer a character from Mass Effect 2, then you'll probably need 2 playthroughs anyway. Thus, for 2 playthroughs, about 3500. The remaining 1500 is done in multiplayer. It seems to me that standing around and boosting like in the tip above is so sluggish, boring and uninteresting that it’s much easier in multiplayer.

Now I'm knocking out platinum, and I found a great place to farm.
DLS Citadel, when Rex falls onto a shuttle with mercenaries, and you are waiting for the Joker, there are 100 + enemies spawning there, if you set the narrative difficulty, throw away the machine gun that they give, and pick up a mercenary pistol with electric cartridges, then the mercenary dies with one shot anywhere. As a result, in 3-4 minutes you can farm 90-100 enemies. After this, their respawn stops, and since kills count towards achievements, even if you exit to the menu without saving, we do that, and then click continue, kill everyone again, etc., until we reach these ill-fated 5000 .

With the release of the citadel add-ons, the M-7 mercenary assault rifle appears in the game, so it doesn’t need ammunition, fortunately it’s like the weapon from the first part, instead of ammunition it overheats, put an additional capacity on it and you have a lot of rounds) the same with the add-on protean, an ion emitter appears in the game, the situation is the same) but an automatic machine is better, it will be more powerful.

Ok! Mr. Akrioz , corrected.

I typed it on Earth, where the second rocket launcher needed to be launched. So, if you don’t start it, Banshees and Raiders will appear there endlessly . I played as an engineer, used a Combat Drone and a Defense Turret (so as not to waste ammo). It is better to take Garrus with Armor-Piercing and James with Incendiary cartridges on the team. The difficulty, of course, is Narrative.

Stuff long enough at the launch site of the rocket launcher. It's better at the beginning of the last mission, when you don't have to board the shuttle. So, I tried many combinations and the best one was: difficulty - narration; weapon - a "Hoe" machine gun (upgraded, of course, from attachments - ammunition and damage, remove the rest of the weapons); armor-piercing cartridges; you direct your allies to go for a walk. It turns out that in about 3-4 minutes there are about 60 kills, in an hour - 700-800. Try...

Also, if you have the Citadel add-on, you can fill it in at the beginning, when you need to save Brooks. We nail it to the end, but we don’t help her, but we go up the ladder and turn 180, there, from above, 2 adversaries will climb without stopping. The same trick can be done when you are waiting for the shuttle (Rex also helps you), just don’t get on it. Difficulty "Narrative", it is advisable to have an area ability with a fast recharge in your arsenal

Unlike the other method, this one still works. I fill a soldier with an M-99 Saber and BB cartridges. One shot one kill. You send your allies to the point where the enemies are dropped, they tank Banshe, and we shoot at the raiders. New carcasses appear immediately after the death of the predecessor and there are always sufficient quantities of them.
