How to unlock the A Few Hundred Bullets Back achievement in Max Payne 3 - Definitive Guide

FINAL EDIT: Returning to this guide after more than a year, I wanted to make some cosmetic changes and add some important information regarding updated Social Club stat tracking and a third rotary grenade launcher. Credits are in the text. Finally, a big "thank you" to all the positive votes and comments; I'm glad this guide has helped some people!

This achievement requires that you get a kill with each of the available weapons in singleplayer (the general consensus is that multiplayer kills do not count, though I have not seen any official testing results and doing so on my own would be a prohibitively time-consuming). I have listed each weapon below and where they can be found. Please note that some weapons appear in many levels; I have listed the earliest locations I found for many of them and the easiest-to-find locations for the others. Unfortunately, there is no way to see which weapons you have used and which you have not; simply keep track on a sheet of paper or simply follow this guide, making sure to snag a kill with each gun as you work your way through the game.

UPDATE: Following the initial release of this title, the Rockstar Social Club did not track singleplayer stats as it does now. If you access or create an account, you will be able to see which weapons you have scored a kill with and which you have not. Credit to melkkman for the initial discovery of this information and Kornfan2007 for posting the information I neglected in a solution below mine. If you vote on this solution (thank you), I encourage you to credit him with the same.

IMPORTANT: The RPG is not available in singleplayer and is not required for this achievement. If you feel you have used each weapon at least once, try getting a direct-hit kill with ALL THREE of Rotary Grenade Launcher and the LAW. Personally, I was missing a kill with the LAW, as the story-related use does not count toward this achievement.

I have tried to keep this guide spoiler-free. I have listed chapter and checkpoints for each. If you want to see what a weapon looks like, the chapter select menu will scroll through the golden guns available in each; this is a good way of matching the name to the model.

Kills are counted as soon as you perform them. If two weapons are in the same area, snag a kill with one, reload the checkpoint, and get a kill with the other.

Difficulty and aiming settings do not effect this achievement.

While a few missions mandate that you use a certain weapon to kill enemies, I have listed alternate locations for each. I am almost certain that these "on-rails" kills count towards weapons used; if you have done everything and still no achievement, try the alternate locations for the Mini-30, M82A1, LMG .30, and the M10.

As a final note, I have listed in parentheses the general type of each weapon. Please note that while the MPK, M972, and SAF 40 Cal are SMG's and the Sawn Off is a shotgun, the game treats them as rifles and pistols, respectively, in terms of the inventory slots they occupy.


Here we go:

PT92 (Pistol): Located in Chapter 1, Checkpoint 2. Max starts with this weapon.

M500 (Shotgun): Located in Chapter 1, Checkpoint 4. Dropped by the last enemy in the room, before progressing further into the level.

Mini-30 (Rifle): Located in Chapter 1, Checkpoint 4. Dropped by an enemy that bursts through a door.

.38 Revolver (Pistol): Located in Chapter 2, Checkpoint 2. Dropped by an enemy during the first battle.

Micro 9mm (Pistol): Located in Chapter 2, Checkpoint 2. Dropped by an enemy during the first battle.

MPK (Rifle): Located in Chapter 3, Checkpoint 6. Dropped by an enemy during this battle in the gift shop.

M82A1 (Rifle): Located in Chapter 3, Checkpoint 12. Story-related. Also found in Chapter 12, Checkpoint 9; Max will automatically pick it up after advancing up the stairwell.

1911 (Pistol): Located in Chapter 4, Checkpoint 2. Max starts with this weapon.

M4 Super 90 (Shotgun): Located in Chapter 4, Checkpoint 2. Dropped by an enemy during the first battle; he is located in the upstairs section of the area.

AK-47 (Rifle): Located in Chapter 4, Checkpoint 12. Dropped by an enemy during this battle after the rooftops section.

608 Bull (Pistol): Located in Chapter 5, Checkpoint 4. Dropped by a goon in a blue shirt during the warehouse battle that begins with Max in cover, looking through a pane of glass.

FAL (Rifle): Located in Chapter 5, Checkpoint 8. Used by enemies just before and during the docks sequence. The first FAL to be found is during the warehouse battle when two enemies open a corrugated steel gate to attack you.

LMG .30 (Rifle): Located in Chapter 5, Checkpoint 12. Story-related. Also available in Chapter 13, Checkpoint 9; it is dropped by the heavily-armored enemy featured in the cutscene.

Auto 9mm (Pistol): Located in Chapter 6, Checkpoint 2. You start the level with this weapon.

MD-97L (Rifle): Located in Chapter 6. Dropped by an enemy during the first battle.

Sawn-Off (Pistol): Located in Chapter 7, Checkpoint 6. Dropped by the bartender during the first battle of the chapter.

Rotary Grenade Launcher (Heavy Weapon): Located in Chapter 8, Checkpoint 4, Chapter 12, Checkpoint 1, AND Chapter 13, Checkpoint 5. In Chapter 8, kill the goon blasting Max from the balcony, then use it for great justice and wreck a few bad-guys' days until you run out of shots. Use bullet-time to score a direct hit on an enemy to ensure the kill is counted. The second Rotary Grenade Launcher is on a table to the right of the door when you encounter the first two enemies inspecting a corpse in Chapter 12, Checkpoint 1. The third Rotary Grenade Launcher is located next to the second LAW in Chapter 13. It has come to my attention that you must also use this one as well to unlock the achievement. At least two of these grenade launchers are different weapons; one explodes directly on impact and the other has a short fuse before detonating.

In any case, be sure to use ALL THREE launchers to score a direct kill, and be sure to get a car explosion kill with the second launcher in addition. Thanks to Hydrolex for the initial information regarding the discrepancy, o ScaryWorld o for confirming the actual difference between the weapons' behaviors, and NitrAce for alerting me to the third location.

NOTE: If the grenade launcher is not scoring you one-hit kills, try restarting your console and/or switching your aiming reticule to "Default." This seems to fix issues regarding "invincible" enemies.

SPAS-15 (Shotgun): Located in Chapter 8, Checkpoint 11. At the end of the level, you will be required to run up to balcony and kill an enemy using this weapon. Dispose of him and lay waste to the enemies below you.

M972 (Pistol): Located in Chapter 9, Checkpoint 4. Dropped by the second enemy on the stairs (the one without a helmet).

G6 Commando (Rifle): Located in Chapter 9, Checkpoint 4. Dropped by an enemy in the alleyway in the same battle where the M972 is found.

M10 (Pistol): Located in Chapter 10, Checkpoint 11. Story-related; Max will automatically pick one up for a sequence. Also located in Chapter 8, Checkpoint 11; it is dropped by a goon during their first wave of attack.

Super Sport (Shotgun): Located in Chapter 12, Checkpoint 4. Used by an enemy in the room to the right before the sunken section of the area. I recommend that you kill him for his Super Sport and use it in turn to kill the enemy with the RPD, below.

RPD (Rifle): Located in Chapter 12, Checkpoint 4. Dropped by an enemy in the battle after the first elevator ride; he is located down the hallway to the left. Grab the Super Sport and Bulletdodge into the hallway, giving him a face-full of buckshot in the process. Use his RPD to mow down more goons later in the level.

LAW (Heavy Weapon): Located in Chapter 13, Checkpoint 5. It is story-related, but this sequence does not count towards the achievement and the LAW is single-use. Instead, Max must run directly left to the opposite end of the area after using the first LAW to find a second. Use bullet time to kill an enemy with a direct hit to count the use of the weapon.

Note: xDAx AWESOME has brought it to my attention that the LAW will not kill the more heavily-armored enemy (the one wearing the helmet) in HARD difficulty. He is correct; however, the lightly-armored enemy in the same area (the one wearing the balaclava) will die in one shot from the LAW in Hard difficulty. If you don't want to deal with the hassle of choosing your targets, play the segment in Medium or Easy difficulty; an anti-tank rocket is a guaranteed kill in these difficulties.

IMPORTANT: Currently, the LAW on the right - next to the body - MUST be used to destroy the APC and the one to the left - leaning against the concrete barrier - MUST be used to get a direct-hit kill. The one on the right WILL NOT kill enemies and is probably only coded to destroy the APC. This may or may not be patched soon, but thanks to xDAx AWESOME for pointing this out (after what I'm sure was a highly frustrating experience).

ALSO IMPORTANT: If the LAW is not scoring you one-hit kills, try restarting your console and/or switching your aiming reticule to "Default." This seems to fix issues regarding "invincible" enemies.

SAF 40 Cal (Rifle): Located in Chapter 13, Checkpoint 8. The enemies who storm out of the elevator during this sequence are carrying this weapon; it has a distinctive green lasersight attachment. Furthermore, starting Checkpoint 9 of this level will start Max with this weapon in your inventory.

FMP G3S (Rifle): Located in Chapter 13, Checkpoint 16. During the end of this level, Max will fight his way through a mock-up training course made of plywood with green spray-painted arrows on the floor. An enemy will shoot at Max from atop some crates next to a chain-link fence during this sequence. He drops the only FMP G3S I found during the game. You can pick it up through the fence after you dispose of him.

Note: Many have reported that this weapon is not required for the achievement, but I will keep the location posted for sake of completeness.

DE .50 (Pistol): Located in Chapter 14, Checkpoint 2. Max starts the level with this weapon.

I've added in specific checkpoints for the LAW, FMP, Super Sport and RPD as those are probably the most difficult to find of the list. I will likely go ahead and add checkpoints for each weapon later today to make the guide a bit more complete.

a LAW will not kill somebody, flat out. Shot to the face, bullet time, last stand, nothing. So idk what you are talking about.

@ xDAx AWESOME : I just loaded up Chapter 13, Checkpoint 5 on Hard difficulty and used the second LAW, located to the left of the first one, and killed one of the initial enemies with it by getting a direct hit on the one to the right and splashing the other with the resultant explosion. You are right in saying that it did not kill the more heavily-armored goon to the right, but it WILL kill the lightly-armored one to the left. I will make a note of this in the solution.

I cant get direct hit kills with the grenade launcher or the LAW. I hit one of the guys without the helmet 3 times point blank but he just got up. Even with an exploding car it didnt work :(

Also tried it at the cemetary but these guys seem explosion proof. Died easy as pie with the pistol...

@ Hydrolex: I used this second grenade launcher myself, but was unaware that it counted for the achievement while the one in Chapter 8 did not. Perhaps it's a coding error, or maybe the car explosion counts as a weapon. I will update the guide to reflect this current error. Thank you for pointing this out!

@ Little 3vil: I addressed this problem earlier. If you are playing in Hardcore or Old School (I have not tested that segment in those difficulties as of yet), then it might not be possible. Load up the checkpoint on Easy and get the kill that way. I can 100% guarantee that Easy difficult will get you the kill. Good luck!

I did my first playthrough on hard and I replayed it on easy but they are bullitproof...I even tried to bring the grenade launcher along to try and kill some enemies later on but they still didnt die

@ Little 3vil: Are you using aim assist at all? All of my playthroughs and testing has been done with free aim. This may or may affect enemy health or the aim assist may affect the arc of the grenade. Try using free aim in easy difficulty and see where that gets you. Honestly, I'm a bit stumped as to why the grenades aren't killing those guys; if my suggestions don't work, I really don't know what else to recommend. Maybe try to nail a car next to an enemy in Chapter 13 and see if that works. Good luck and let me know if you manage to get it. I'd try the car explosion kill first; those usually kill anything around them in a rather large radius.

@ Little 3vil: Also, make good use of bullet time in free aim. Try to get a solid body shot, or a headshot if you can manage it. If the grenade physically hits the enemy, I've never seen them get up after that (aside from the ridiculously armored guys you fight a few times during the game).

You are wrong. I did it on every difficulty and every aim. Originally beat the game on hard/free aim.

I have shot every enemy in that area, including every person to the next checkpoint. Also tried headshots, body shots, splash damage, doing pistol damage first.

Nothing works.

Does it need to be in one playtrough? Because then i missed the LAW one too, was thinking the use is counted, because it not says get an kill with each, it says use each so its a wrong then...

About the issue with the 1hit Kills:
I can confirm the LAW and Grenade Launcher do 1hit Kills on easy, even indirect kills by shooting near the ground or blowing up a car killing a goon. Like o KeyserSoeze o said, there must be something wrong with your game.

Alright, I figured out the problem. This could just be a freak thing with my game, but which LAW you use matters. I had been using the left one to shoot the car, then picking up the LAWs on the right to kill the guys.This doesn't work for me.

The LAW on the left is the only one that would kill that lone solider that runs to the left. So weird.

@ xDAx AWESOME: I'm glad to see you got the achievement! I wrote in my guide that there is a second LAW to the left of the first, but I had no idea that you HAD to use that one. I'll add it to the guide; there's a lot of weird stuff regarding this achievement, especially with the rocket and grenade launchers. Hopefully Rockstar will patch it soon. I'm sorry it took you so long to get the achievement, but I'm glad the problem was finally resolved! :)

Thanks, so i can get it later or via Chapters... I play on Hard currently and my Granade Launcher kills also easly 2-4 Duded with one Shot if placed right... I filled the Ammo to 10 with 6 Ready and then almost terminated the Policestation with the Grandelauncher alone hehehe... But i only used the LAW's to destroy the Vehicles after killing all with the Grandelauncher, don't know if that counts too or if it must be Duded, well i will see, thanks again for the Info....

@ RSDAY: Correct. As I mentioned earlier, many of the weapons appear in multiple locations.

@ NeXuS23: Yes, you can get it either during another playthrough, or you could just load up the chapter. You must kill an enemy with the LAW, not the APC or vehicles. So load up the checkpoint, use the first LAW to kill the APC, and then use the second to kill an enemy.

ok, this is bullshit. I've lost count of how many times I reloaded chapter 13 checkpoint 5. The enemies won't die if I shoot right into their faces with either the GL or the LAW. They don't die even for car explosions and I'm playing on easy!!!! I tried everything, this is driving me insane!

@Urashima - It's a common glitch. You need to restart your console. I also had to go into settings > gameplay > reticles and set them to 'default' for it to work. If not, just turn your 360 off and try again.

Had also trouble with the LAW, couldn't kill them even right in front of them, after i restartet my Xbox it worked on my first try. Maybe you should add this for others with the same problem

I thought I would add that the DE .50 is also used in Chapter 11 Checkpoint 11. You use it while on the zip line and have it equipped after that event. :)

pretty sure i only ever picked up the FMP G3S, never got a kill with it, and this popped when i got a direct LAW kill after destroying the tank. the kill was even after i died, and it still worked

i think this achievement maybe glitched? on my first playthrough picked up every weapon you mentioned until i got to the LAW part. Blew up the APC, climbed over the wall and grabbed the second LAW, entered bullet time and got a direct impact on the geezer with no helmet on the far right. Once i cleared the area i picked up the grenade launcher (inside the crate to the left of where you pick up the first LAW) killed a guy with it and walked through the next door and got a direct hit triple kill on the police then my achievement popped? without even having to use the last 3 guns you mentioned? could it possibly be because ive got a kill with them in multiplayer? im pretty sure i used that grenade launcher earlier in the game though. oh well not that im complaining thanks for the guide :)

@ bmlx5867: No, just like grind progress, the game tracks each kill as soon as you perform it.

@ CharlieboyX: Yes, you may use golden guns.

@ iM3RKxYOUx: The achievement is not glitched, you actually use the DE .50 in a Payne Moment and probably picked up the SAF .40 at some earlier point. I'm not sure about the FMP G3S, some people report that they didn't need to use it to unlock the achievement. I'm glad you enjoyed the guide!

Hey, grenade launchers in chapter 8 and 13 are DIFFERENT. In chapter 8 it detonates about 2-3 sec after hit the ground or immediately on hit bot, but in chapter 13 it detonates immediately after hit bot/ground! Place it to ur guide!

i haven't got the achievement yet, but this is a great guide and the "unusual suspect" that wrote this guide has done a nice job of cleaning up the guide and responding to questions. More people on TA should take note... I pretty sure I have used every weapon like a million times and can't find the mystery weapon yet unused...

damn, the achievement says "use every weapon" not "kill" so I was picking them up and firing a round and dropping if I didn't actually want to continue on with it. Looks like I'll have a bunch to go over after I finish the last two chapters in Hard.

As with others, seems the LAW was missing for me... splash damage kills obviously do not count - needs to be a direct hit as suggested!

So I was missing the grenade launcher and both those checkpoints didn't work despite getting kills with it. So when I'm doing my old school playthrough I made it to chapter 12 and right there sitting on a table right next to where the first golden rpg part is, there's a nice grenade launcher. Shot it once and pop goes the achievement. Thought you might want to add a third location as well. Has 4 in the rotary chamber and 4 spare grenades too.

I was having an issue with the "invincible" enemies using the LAW. Guys wouldn't die, even on easy. Changing the reticule did not fix anything but a restart of my console did. Thanks!

Like others, I also did not use the FMP. At first I thought this was because I picked it up once off a dead enemy in multiplayer and fired a few rounds, however I had not managed to kill anyone. So I don't think the FMP is required for the achievement.

Great info, upvote from me. I'd put the actual web address for the Social Club so people don't have to look around for it (I found it in a separate solution). Also, you mention that the RPG isn't available in single player, but I haven't played any multiplayer at all, and Social Club shows that I have 67 kills with it?

You can actually find the DE.50 WAAAAAAY earlier then Chapter 14, I found one just poking around on the docks in Chapter 5. There's one located inside a trailer just after you exit the warehouse and before you get to the edge of the docks(for reference it's in the same area as Golden Gun LMG #2)

Another gun you find far earlier then this guide indicates-The M10, several of the mobsters in Chapter 8 are carrying them, but the ones at the very beginning are your best bet.

I got the achievement while I was in Last Man Standing ability and the rocket(LAW) didn't reach the target in time, so I died. But it popped up anyway.

FMP G3S (Rifle) and DE .50 not needed for me! It unlocked in Chapter 13. After I killed a guy with the LAW.

First of all, great Guide o KeyserSoeze o helped me a lot! Thumbs up for this!

I had trouble unlocking this achievement and thought this one is glitched, cause i was 100% sure that i've used every weapon and got direct hits with the LAW and Grenade Launcher, but i found out something interessting:

In Chapter 13 Checkpoint 5 where you'll find the LAW, on the left side near the police car and the barricade, you will find another Grenade Launcher. I picked this one up, got an indirect kill by blowing up a car killing a goon and voilà achievement unlocked.

So when you are 100% sure you've used every weapon and still no cheevo, try this grenade launcher and maybe you get it like me.

@ xDAx AWESOME: That's uncalled for. I have obviously obtained the achievement myself and have written a guide that has helped more than a few others as well. The LAW *should* kill enemies in one hit on easy difficulty. It does for me. The grenade launcher *should* kill enemies in one hit on easy difficulty. Again, it does for me. I have spent more time than I wanted testing this to death, so it's a problem with your software. I cannot do any further testing on this matter, as I am away from my 360 for a week due to family functions. However, a thought occurred to me during my flight. There was an 11MB update for the game that was issued hours after its release. I have this update, and it might be part of the problem. If you are certain that the LAW is not getting you kills, something is wrong with your game. Clear your cache and reinstall the update and see where that gets you. It makes no logical sense that an anti-tank rocket to the chest wouldn't kill someone; something is broken on your end. I'm guessing it's the update. Try that. If that doesn't work, I'm out of solutions. Shoot a car with the LAW and try to get a kill that way. The rockets in my game not only kill the target, but the splash usually takes out one or two more; if this is not the case, again, clear your cache and reinstall the update. Aside from recording and uploading a video of me killing guys with the LAW and the Grenade Launcher, I am out of ideas. If the update solution doesn't work, try calling Rockstar; something's not right.

@ Little 3vil: Please see the previous post. Clear your cache, reinstall the 11MB update, try again.

@ NeXuS23: No. It took me two playthroughs to get the achievement. The description says "use" each weapon, yes. I had indeed "used" each weapon my first playthrough, but no achievement. What ultimately got me the achievement was using the other LAW to kill an actual enemy, not just the APC. The requirements for the achievement are ambiguously written. Good luck.

@ Ibanez V7: Thanks for the tip about resolving this glitch. I'm on vacation and haven't been able to do much web surfing or any gaming, so your input is greatly appreciated.

@Smash14: I do have a social club account, but am unsure if there's an option for viewing total weapon kills. The singleplayer page does show me my "Top 3" weapons, but that's hardly useful. Considering that my account shows (incorrectly) that I've only collected half of the clues and golden gun parts, I don't have much faith in the social club stats at this early date. In short, no, I do not see any option for viewing all singleplayer weapons stats; if this feature is ever added in the future, I will make note of it.

Yep, also works in NYM etc. as that is where I got my final kill for the achievement. All kills are tracked across game modes.

Great guide, though I believe automatic tracking is possible if you use Social Club from rockstar. If you are registered and go to:

you can see how many kills you've got with each weapon in single player. I found out I only missed 2, and by using your guide I got the achievement in 5 minutes. Thumbs up!

@ Little 3vil: After thinking about your problem, I popped the disc in and thought I would try the Chapter 13 segment again, this time using hard lock on easy to see if it made a difference. After destroying the APC with the LAW, I immediately ran over to the grenade launcher and out into the street, close to the enemies that come out of the garage. At a range of maybe 20 feet or so (in line with the rear end of the car to the right), I went into bullet time, lined up a shot at the enemy on the left (wearing the balaclava) and fired a grenade right into his chest. I can confirm that this killed him; the target reticule displayed the "x" and he didn't get up. Get in close, go into bullet time, get a solid torso hit, and the grenade will kill him. Good luck.

This should help you work out what you are missing and then use the posted guides to find the missing ones. All credit goes to melkkman for posting this in a comment on a guide here.

This is not a weapon guide. I don't care for votes either way, but thought this essential bit of info needed to be in a guide. As neither guide here mentions it I am posting a new one until one of theirs is updated

There are a total of 26 weapons you will need to use to unlock this achievement, just get a kill or two with each to be certain it registers and you will have no problems. Here's a list of all weapons in the game:

It's possible to miss out on a trophy because you feel like you've shot everything.

BUT, only a direct hit counts. That is, if you, for example, use the Rotary Grenade Launcher, then you need to hit the enemy directly with a grenade. Fortunately, the grenade launcher is found in at least 3 levels in the game: the cemetery, the police station and the airport.

But LAW (rocket launcher) can only be found in the police station. Using LAW you need to destroy the armored car, but this does not count towards the trophy. To get the trophy, you need to hit one of the policemen running ahead with a rocket launcher (at high difficulty levels, a heavily armored cop may not even be killed).

It looks like this. Chapter 13, Checkpoint 5. We sit behind cover until the armored car begins to reload, do a somersault out of the cover, pick up the rocket launcher and go back into cover until the next reload (sometimes you can immediately shoot from the LAW, try it). When you're done with the armored car, you can pick up another rocket launcher either from the car in front of you or behind cover on the left across the road (by the way, there's another Rotary Grenade Launcher there). A cop runs out of the garage, takes good aim and shoots the missile right into his center mass. Trophy in your pocket.
