How to unlock the Deterrence achievement in METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN - Definitive Guide

When you completed Episode 31 you can build a Nuclear Weapon for 750.000 GMP, 75.000 Fuel and 50.000 Metal. It about (real) 26 hours to complete (depending on your Base Development Unit Level). You also lose 50.000 Heroism Points (you need 150.000 for the Hero Achievement).
I highly recommend you no use waste that kind of Fuel, if you haven't upgraded your Motherbase fully yet.

If you have a Nuke, your FOB can't be attacked by Players who don't have the Hero Status/Achievement. The Nuke can be build from the Menu cn_start -> Motherbase -> Resources -> cn_LB

---- After Patch 1.04 -----
You can't use Offline Ressources anymore to build the Nuke, now you need processed Online Materials. They can be farmed by playing Dispatch and FOB Missions. If you switch to Offline Mode you can still build them with offlineMaterials

Posted by LAZY SHIKAMARUX : I found out a good way to pass the time while it's being built. If you go to your power settings and turn off your consoles ability to turn off after inactivity, you can snap an app while playing the game. While the app is snapped if you have your controls focused on the snapped app, you can turn off your controller and the game will still run without prompting you to plug in a controller.

Not having a go, just want to help with some constructive criticism (which may help future proof from negatives) but this line doesn't make sense:

"It also takes to build 1,2 Real Days INGAME Days to complete".

Did you mean:

"It takes 2 in game days to complete one nuke..."

or

"It takes 1 to 2 in game days to complete one nuke..."

"Real days INGAME" is an either - or situation.

Real day (24 hours)
In game day (72mins)

I know English isn't your first language so just trying to help :)

I started creating my nuke and my development time is 26 hours (might be because of my base development level). I found out a good way to pass the time while it's being built. If you go to your power settings and turn off your consoles ability to turn off after inactivity, you can snap an app while playing the game. While the app is snapped if you have your controls focused on the snapped app, you can turn off your controller and the game will still run without prompting you to plug in a controller.

There is no description of 'how' to build it. You just state that it 'can' be built. Where do you go to build it? In the development tab like everything else? or something different? The reason I ask, is that i have over 75000 fuel, 50000 metal, and millions of gpm. Yet there is nothing under development tab about building a nuke.

The snapping an app thing doesn't work for me on my console for some reason. The game pauses while in the app. What does work though is plugging your controller into a usb port on the console. If it is plugged in then it will never turn off. Any micro-usb cord will do.

for farming the materials:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xmi3JXOD4fQ
you don't have to do anything, just lay in the truck. it'll go through checkpoints so it's really the less annoying way to farm the resources

No, it's better (In my Opinion), you can only use Online Ressources to build the Nuke. You can get then at FOB and Dispatch Missions

Luckily I started building my nuke right before the patch, but the new online resources requirement is ridiculous because there is no way of controlling how our resources are partitioned between offline and online.

You can still start building a nuke with offline resources. Just switch to offline mode and the build option enables again. I started mine yesterday and have been back online since so it doesn't cancel the build either. Fingers crossed there's no more patches to try to force us into the crappy FOB missions...

@Albert Scale - That's good to know, 'cause like dresdenWWII said, there's no way to move resources back and forth.

As for the crappy FOB missions, there's that Mosquito event right now that helps you get to five infiltrations no problem, but what's the point, right?

@dresdenWWII - Regardless, when you're in Offline Mode, all your online assets are frozen and unuseable, so trying to dismantle an offline nuke becomes undoable, unless you stay in offline mode. As well, the production time to build it offline drops by 20% compared to online mode.

Okay, just got it, I can confirm that if you disconnect from Online in order to develop it with Offline Materials, you do have to disconnect in order to dispose of it once it's developed. Once mine was developed about five minutes ago, I tried twice to dispose of it while Online, and got two network errors. Once I disconnected though, I was in fact able to dispose of my nuke.

Just thought I'd inform everyone that the snap app trick only works when you snap the app, focus on the game, then focus back on the app. If you just double tap cn_guide to snap it will pause the game. You could also just snap from the home as well.

By LAZY SHIKAMARUX on 23 Oct 2015 15:02
Turns out that the new dashboard makes it so the game doesn't pause when you double tapcn_guide to snap. The method should still work with the old dashboard as well since I did it before I got the update. If all fails then there is nothing wrong with a micro USB connected to the controller. I just use mine to charge my phone at night so that's why I did it the way I did.

I heard online nuke development (started online with online resources) now takes real time instead of in-game playing time. I can't test it because I don't want to build another nuke, but if true, making nukes should be much quicker now if you have the necessary stockpiled resources.

By Dresden N7 on 31 Oct 2015 01:36
Yeah, I'm not testing that, last thing I need is some bastard stealing my nukes, but I guess if I want the nuclear proliferation cutscene, I'll have to build one.

Dresden, if you test it, let me know.

@Crater - Hero points are different to demon points. Demon points are a hidden value; they can only be countered by doing specific "good deeds" and from what I read, you gain a lot from building a nuke to the point it's guaranteed to make the horn bigger and may even adopt the blood soaked visual. Though like you say, not bothered by it then all good =)

Haven't gotten the bloodsoak, so I'm good. But I wouldn't mind making the horn significantly smaller, it makes wearing the parasite suit a real pain right now.

To clarify the development time. It is actual 26 real time hours. Even when the game is turned off.

Not 26 real time hours while in game, like with most other development in the game. (The snapping an app hint is now irrelevant.)

I have no idea what to do. Ive barely played FOB or Dispatch at all, like 3x total so I eouldnt have resources from that. All single player campaign although I am always online.

How do i get this nuke made?

I've just started playing Metal Gear V, and I've completed mission 21 to gain access to FOB platforms. However, when I tried to attack someone with nuke weapons, the game mentioned that I needed a significant amount of heroism points to infiltrate the user. Despite this, I received a call from Ocelot informing me that I could now develop nuke weapons. Additionally, in the FOB tab, I don't see the logo indicating the presence of nukes. I'm really confused about why I cannot engage others with nukes. Do I need to unlock the achievement for creating a nuke and disposing of one? Or do I need to accumulate a lot of heroism points to infiltrate? For those who are wondering, yes, I have completed Mission 31. That is how I was introduced to creating nukes. I'm struggling to understand the game's systems, so if anyone knows the answer and is willing to share, I'd appreciate it!

For anyone who started this years ago and had a half decent base when you left if you return now (i did after 4 years of not logging in) you go to Motherbase -> PF Grade -> Any League -> Press RT. You can redeen PF Points for all kind of rewards i came back and saw way over 4million points on it and i can buy like 50 nukes with the amount of points i have, about 1k of the points will get you roughly 5k mats so no need for grinding if you have played this game start to finish atleast a year ago you should have quite a bit of points already

Nuclear weapon development is hidden away in the iDroid menu, and becomes available after Episode 31 is complete.

You have to go to the Mother Base tab, then into Resources, and over to the nuclear tab in there.

Once you have enough fuel and metal resources, and GMP also, you can develop your own nuclear weapon.

Its worth adding that you will lose 50,000 heroism, so its best to go for the Hero trophy first.

it costs 750,000 GMP, 75,000 fuel and 50,000 metal.
if you have 70,000 fuel online and 5,000 offline- it will NOT combine them, you need 75,000 in one.

A nuke will make it to where anybody lacking "The Hero" achievement cannot attack motherbase. After completing Episode 31 you can build a Nuclear Weapon for 750k GMP, 75k Fuel, 50k Metal and also 50k heroism. The process will, depending on your motherbase level, take roughly 24-28 hours to complete. The time this takes is in REAL time, not game time. It should also be noted, that using your offline resources to build your online nuke has been patched. ( https://www.reddit.com/r/metalgearsolid/comments/3nrfcm/mgsv... ) In order to build your nuke using offline resources you must go into offline mode. Materials may be obtained (online mode) via dispatch missions and/or FOB missions. In FOB missions you may gain some for the win, but for the most part you must obtain them via "stealing" the freight cars. Here are a few videos to help you if needed:

Hope this helps! Let me know how I can improve my guide if needed.

After finishing the first chapter, you will be given the ability to construct nuclear weapons. On the Mother Base screen of your iDroid, select Resources. The last list in this menu, accessed through and , gives you the option to construct a nuke. It will cost 750 000 GMP, and also requires 75 000 Fuel Resources and 50 000 Minor Metal. As of patch 1.04, if you are connected in online mode, these materials must be online materials gathered through FOB missions. If you are in offline mode, however, you can use offline materials to build the nuke. You also need to have an FOB constructed (See Intruder), which technically makes this an online trophy.

To clarify:
  • If you are Online, the game will default to using Online Materials.
  • If you disconnect from PSN and become Offline, you will be using Offline Materials.

The easiest way to grind the materials you need after the patch is to play FOB missions (Also see Intruder) and use online resources. FOB missions by far give the highest amount of resources from all of the patches to date. Additionally, at the FOB menu, you can engage in 'Security Challenges'. These are highly difficult to complete, but give massive amounts of resources and GMP when you finish them. So, get grinding, and once you have 750 000 GMP, 75 000 Fuel and 50 000 Minor Metal, build the nuke from the Resources menu of your iDroid.

After commencing development, it will take 24 hours to finish if Mother Base is fully upgraded. If you're developing the nuke online (using online materials), this is real-time. You can close the game and come back 24 hours later and the nuke will be developed. If you're developing the nuke offline (using offline materials), however, this is in-game time instead, so you must be playing for 24 hours or leave the console on overnight.

After those 24 hours, the trophy will unlock. After having constructed the nuclear weapon, you will immediately lose 50 000 heroism, so make sure you have earned Hero first. After you've constructed the nuke, immediately dispose of it for 100 000 GMP in the same menu to earn Disarmament. Nukes can be stolen by other players on FOB missions, so if you hesitate to dispose of it, you can lose that 24 hours you just spent.

After the end of Act 1, it will be possible to develop it. The button itself is not so easy to find in all these menus; it is hidden in the resources section. Quite expensive to develop

By creating a bomb, you will receive 50,000. And it is almost guaranteed that you will soon be in the guise of a demonic Snake, with a horn and blood all over your body. The bed cannot be washed off in the shower. If you don't like this look, make a bomb at the end!

Farm resources patch 1.12 . Meaning: we collect containers in missions 12, 21 and 30, after collecting the containers and the checkpoint - “cancel the task”. After this, we go through episode 4, quickly destroy the antennas from a helicopter. And the resources in missions 12, 21 and 30 are back in place. Longer than it was, but still.

The creation of a warhead takes place within a day (24 hours)!!! In no case do not leave this achievement until the end, because as when creating everything else in this game, time is calculated only when the game is running and believe me, you will be very unhappy when this achievement turns out to be the last, and there will be absolutely nothing to do in the game. Unfortunately this is my case...

The development of nuclear weapons will be available after completing story mission 32 “Too Much Knowledge” and you will need to accumulate resources:

GMP: 750,000
Flammable: 75,000
Minor metals: 50,000

For game version 1.11, the development of nuclear weapons will take from 18 to 27 hours of real time. Development time is affected by the level of development of the player base.
The launch of the development of nuclear weapons and their disposal is done through the Main Database > Nuclear Weapons tab.
The amount of resources for starting the development of nuclear weapons can be tracked through the Main database tab > Resources > Materials (recycled).

Video (en) : method of farming ROS resources. Works on PS3 and PS4 for game version 1.11.
In short, in free play mode you need to hold the left stick with a match near the desired stone and the “checkpoint” and “save” should always work. The inscription appears in the right corner of the screen.
