How to unlock the The Hunt is my Mistress achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Definitive Guide
INTRO:
I'd like to say that my solution is maybe a mix of all others, taking bits and pieces plus ideas of my own.
The reason why I worked to get another method and felt the need to write another solution is because:
1) this method doesn't require to gather barely any intel
2) this method doesn't require to roam & run around getting beast kills
3) this method seemed much more reliable to me than the other solutions.
that being said, more and more people unlocked this with the other solutions, so maybe I just suck a lot at this game. which is why I needed an easier way to get this achievement.
With all other solutions I always ran out of time... with my system I ended up (as of writing this, today):
5th on Elite leaderboard with 37:12min and 15636 points (could have easily got 1000ish more points more in those 2-3min.
I worked real hard on this. I probably tried this 20 times. sometimes giving up at 10min in, sometimes not making it in time and wasting 40min.
The reason is I wanted to find the absolute best and clear way to do this in order to write a solution. I recently started to stream on twitch and I was excited about making a good video guide for this.
Some of my ideas didn't work. Some did. And I adapted some stuff from other people.
I hated the fact we had to lose 6-8-10min. gathering intel on Captains, so I tried something different.
SOLUTION:
--- Youtube links added and twitch link removed as twitch videos will disapear in a few days ---
I strongly suggest to watch the videos, as it shows important stuff like Graug bait locations, needed for my solution. However I will now try to write a clear instruction.
SHORT EXPLANATION:
*** Has to be done in the "Lord of the Hunt" DLC in the Trial mode. The Trial name is "Test of the Wild"
*** The objective is to only get intel on a Warchief and from there on ONLY do riots with that Warchief
*** no wasting time gathering intel on Captains or running around killing them with beasts. it's all done through riots
*** if you don't want to watch my video and/or you haven't played as many hours as me, it might be a good idea to make a "test run" to find all the Graug baits near the riot locations. but it would be just easier to check my video
DETAILED EXPLANATION:
You get intel on a warchief either by finding a green intel or quickly going to the closest power struggle Captain and branding him.
Warchiefs:
- Ugakuga is the one you really want. Easy to beat. Doesn't die too easy in riots. NOTE: he will probably not go "green" while beating him. Just hit him with the sword (carefully not to kill him) and eventually he will kneel and surrender. You then get the option to kill or brand him.
- Shagflak IGNORE you would waste too much time trying to beat him
- Zugor Beast Butcher (The explosive arrow one) is easy to beat (vulnerable to ranged) but he is too powerful in riots and may destroy or scare your enemies before you can eat them. NOTE: when you riot against him, kill him right away even if you miss all his bodyguards that way. He is way too dangerous to keep him alive until your Graug arrives.
- the rest are more or less fair game.
- The best is to reset and start again if the first Warlord you unveil is not Ugakuga, in order to save time and have a clear run
Once you branded a warchief, start rioting against other warchiefs
When you start rioting, you need to learn the locations of Graug baits near each riot location (watch my video or do a "test run"), summon and brand/mount the Graug and eat the Captains first and the Warchief last.
Sometimes it's better to just kill the enemy Warchief and let the bodyguards flee, as another Captain will be promoted to Warchief and get new bodyguards, which is what you want: warchiefs with lots of bodyguards all the time to eat and eat them quickly. Also, killing a Warchief nets more points, so it's good when a Captain gets promoted.
Once you're done with your Graug, make sure to kill it for extra points
Once the riot is over, grab your branded Warchief before he leaves and send him on the next riot (this saves you time as you don't need to make a Beck&Call)
After the Warchief left the screen, press to dispatch all remaining Uruks for some extra points.
Focus on the 10 beast kills first with your Graug, then use the Graug for speed kills and points for killing the Graug.
and basically rinse and repeat... NOTE: even if the next riot is closeby, you should use quick travel, in order to make Graug baits respawn.
Oh, also: at the beginning, when there are still plenty of Captains (but you already killed 1-2 Warchiefs), it's a good idea to use the "advance time" options a few times, to allow the game to promote a Captain to Warchief and also to promote some guys to bodyguards. Later on it's not a good idea, unless you already have your 10 beast kills... because you might run out of normal Captains to eat.
NOTE: It sounded obvious to me, but to make sure everyone understands: if there are no more Warchiefs and you don't want to advance time because you still need to eat regular Captains, you do NOT run around searching them, you just riot them too.
04/jan/2015 NOTE: another thing that might come obvious when watching the videos, but I'd like to explain it here too: WARCHIEF KILL COUNT RESET EXPLANATION: the game counts how many Warchiefs are alive at any given time. If you killed some Warchief but you advanced time and/or a bodyguard took his place, that kill won't count anymore. It's not a big deal, I actually explain in the video that you get more points for killing Warchiefs anyways and in the end you have to spend the same time killing 25 Uruks total, so you WILL get those 5 Warchief kills one way or another. But it is suggested to only use advance time at the beginning (after killing a few Warchiefs) and to always kill bodyguards before killing the Warchief himself.
16/jan/2015 NOTE: a little trick I thought might come handy. Credit to Fuzzmeister J in the comments. quote: "Twice in this run I grabbed Ugakuga with the Graug by mistake. I was able to pause the game and quit. Click continue and he was still alive. As long as you quit before his head is munched on, you are good. It will even save the captains you killed during that riot, but you can start it back up and and kill the war chief like normal."
Before voting negatively, please let me know why. I worked a lot for this achievement just in order to come up with a nice guide and video. If you think there is room for improvement please let me know instead of just giving me a -1 and leaving me in the dark. Much appretiated.
Part#1:
NEW video guide on Youtube. You'll see in the video I do this in 36:22; my best time yet, i even made more than a few cock ups (as usual, running into walls, warchief essentially suffering a heart attack etc) so there is more than enough time, points aren't great, but as i've always maintained, I am playing for the achievements (and in this case helping you guys get it) and I couldn't care less if I am at the top or the bottom of the leaderboard and if you don't either then please watch and enjoy.
Essentially for this achievement you must complete the Test of the Wild whilst completing the main objective, plus all 3 bonus objectives.
These are as follows (although note, possibly not verbatim):
Main Objective: Kill all 5 War Chiefs and all 20 Captains
Bonus Objectives: Complete the challenge in under 40 minutes (bonus 1000 points)
Kill 10 Captains using a beast (War Chiefs do not count)
Obtain 13,000 points (12,000 plus above bonus)
Now this is by far the most challenging achievement in this game. You will likely attempt this and fail several times and get very frustrated (I know I did). It is very much down to luck of the draw, specifically in terms of enemy placement but perseverance is key. You cannot afford to make mistakes and I cannot stress enough the importance of using the map and the Sauron's Army page to your advantage-it wastes too much time to go to one area of the map, kill a few captains, race to the other side of the map and then realise that there was another one in the area you were previously. Furthermore, you cannot let enemies escape, that also wastes too much time as you are essentially having to track them down and battle them twice. You will want to spam use of LB (think it's called wraith vision or something) to pinpoint your foes in these areas.
When you start, immediately drop down and start dominating the generic uruks until you have intel on all 20 captains. If you happen to see worms or intel pages by all means grab them to use on the war chiefs but don't worry too much about the war chiefs for now. Now, ignoring any involved in power struggles, the majority of the captains will be centered around the 3 strongholds; the shanty town type area in the south, the fortress to the north-east and the fishery to the north-west. Use the Graugr bait on the nearest NORTH-SOUTH facing bridge to where you spawned (there is an East-West facing one not too far away) and mount the Graug using shadow mount and using the Sauron's Army screen track all the captain's down using the Graug's Y button move to bite their heads off, killing them in one hit. Ensure that you have killed every captain in that area before moving onto the next one. Again use the Sauron's Army screen to your advantage to mop up any captains not in the strongholds as you traverse the map from point to point. If you think you may have messed up and lost a bit of time, you can also ignore any Uruks who you know are bodyguards (as you can kill them during the War Chief fight), although it's probably safer to just kill all the captains (again, to clarify NOT those involved in power struggles), before moving onto the War Chiefs. You should have more than 10 beast kills by this point so that's one objective down.
With all that done I would suggest having at least 10-12 minutes left on the clock and as ever expediency is still a must. I would 100% recommend using Ugakuga Graug Rider (he doesn't actually ride a Graug like he does in the story) as the War chief to dominate, as a beserker class enemy he has a move where he can trip enemies up and then do a one hit kill move (it's actually 3 or 4 hits in the animation), where he just lays into them while they are led on the ground. This is particularly useful against Shagflak Ghul Keeper who is all but invincible to anything you can do to him unless you have a Graug handy but can seemingly be harmed by other Orcs regardless. Even then he's still a bit of a hard case but in the 4 times him and Ugakuga have gone toe-to-toe for me, Ugakuga has come out on top. Ugakuga is also pretty easy to beat as you can use the stun move or the move where you jump over him and then use combo flurry until you have a finisher, use both finishers on him, rinse and repeat. The only potential problem is that he never turns green, meaning you can't actually garb him but every time for me he has done the thing where he drops to his knees on low health and you can either kill or dominate him (i'm not actually sure what let's some captains and war chiefs do this when others get killed outright). Regardless, once you have dominated your warchief, command him to riot against each other warchief and any remaining captains (the 3 or 4 who were involved in power struggles). Utilising Riots not only skips out the mission to draw out the warchief but you also have a load of friendly uruks should things get too hairy. I would always advise killing all of the war chief's/captain's troops first and then killing the leader apart from in the case of Tumhorn who can be killed instantly with a stealth kill and will likely be alerted if you start shooting his troops. Zugor can be a pain with his rapid firing exploding crossbow but building up combo chains whilst killing his supporters and then using flame arrows on him makes short work of him as he is distracted by your uruks.
Truth be told the only captain or war chief who is consistently a nuisance, is Shagflak who I mentioned above-he will likely take a good 1-2 minutes for your guys to kill as they are pretty dumb and you can't do anything to help.
Now the question of points. DO NOT DISPATCH YOUR DOMINATED WAR CHIEF (who should be the last target standing) UNTIL YOU HAVE AT LEAST 12,000 POINTS! I never had a problem with points (you can see I'm currently 4th on the world leaderboard for a narrowly failed attempt)-except on the time I actually did it. I was over 1000 points short after killing my last target (excluding my dominated war chief obviously) and with only 90 or so seconds left I started panicking. Now in the wake of the last riot there were a lot of dominated uruks stood around who I built up combos on and then used finishers to build up some half decent points. What really did it for me though was killing 3 Carragors for I think 105 points a pop. That was luck as if they hadn't been there I likely wouldn't have got the points in time. To remedy this I would suggest making sure to kill your Graug once you are done with him and if you get an opportunity to kill Carragors (a lot seem to spawn around the starting area where you will be dominating uruks for intel) for a tidy point boost (the clock also stops whilst in focus mode-this can be used to your advantage to cover ground quickly as well). Ultimately you will also get points for dispatching your own war chief but I can't imagine this is more than 1-200 so I would play it safe. Provided you have done it in under 40 minutes you will now get a 1000 point bonus to take you up to 13,000+. Congratulations.
This challenge is annoying, it will take a lot of time and effort and ultimately I barely made it by the skin of my teeth (I am currently sat at the bottom of the elite leaderboard and had a measly 25 seconds left before failure), but as someone who has been devoting all my gaming time to this since it was released and thought it impossible, I can now say it is doable but very challenging.
Good luck doing it, please let me know if you've found any other helpful shorcuts or methods and remember: ALL HAIL BASED UGAKUGA.
EDIT: I just did this for a second time. I was streaming via Twitch but being my first time and with Twitch never mentioning that you have to select a box in settings to make videos archive automatically, it hasn't saved. I actually completed it again with just over 3 minutes to spare and this time had a comfortable amount of points. I even died twice whilst doing it. The more you try this the easier it gets, evidently.
As soon as you start, lean over the edge and shadow mount a caragor. Press LB to put on your ghost vision and look around for Captains, sometimes there's one or two right by where you start. If there's Captains kill them but if not just start riding around turning your ghost vision on and off looking for them. After playing a bunch you should be familiar with the areas which Captains hang out and you can ride your caragor around trying to find them saving time by using the new slow down time feature for your caragors from the new DLC (Jumping over rocks and coming down from ledges will prompt you to press A and you will run faster and the time will slow down. You must utilize this as much as possible.) While looking for Captains, if you come across some easy to get intel go and grab him and unlock some Warchiefs.
The first thing you want to work on and get out of the way is the 10 monster kills. Even though grabbing graugs and running into forts to eat Captains is good and you can try do this if it works out for you especially in the top left fort and the bottom middle are pretty easy to run through places with the graug and you can get some easy monster kills on the Captains. During my run that I got the achievement I barely even used graugs, only once or twice. The way I was getting monster kills was running around with the caragor and trying to stealth kill Captains, sometimes they would die instantly. If they didn't die I would shoot them with arrows until they did, which counts as a monster kill fortunately. If the Captain was unable to be hurt with the ranged attacks/arrows I would hit him with the sword trying to kill him and when he had low health you can hold RT and press Y to jump off your mount and assassinate him, which also counts as a monster kill. If you try to eat the Captain while hes on the ground it usually doesn't do much damage or he could kill your caragor so I would refrain from that. If the Captain causes too much trouble or kills your beast you can just kill him and move on or you can look for a graug spawning bag of rocks (which are hanging around various spots on the map) you can see them when you turn your ghost vision on.
So get the monster kills on Captains asap and grab intel so that you can unlock Warchiefs. The Warchief that you need unlocked is the big one, the berserker Ugakuga the graug tamer. Hes the only Warchief you need to unlock. Once you've got your 10 monster kills and unlocked the graug tamer with intel go and start the mission to call him out. This should be your only mission you do to call out a Warchief since they take up too much time. Do the objective, once hes out try to kill his bodyguards first if he has any, then beat his ass. Don't kill the Warchief but dominate him and command him to riot against another Warchief. Go to the riot mission and kill the Warchief and make sure your dominated guy stays alive. I tried to kill the Warchief first mostly because when a Warchief dies one of his bodyguards will take his place and you can kill him right there after and you will be rewarded with more points for killing a Warchief rather a Captain. The only thing is the bodyguards will be running away after you kill the Warchief so you gotta be quick.
Now once everyone is dead, grab your dominated Warchief before he vanishes and dominate him again and command him to riot against another Warchief. This is what you're gonna be doing for the rest of time. Commanding your Warchief to riot saves you so much time because you don't have to waste time drawing any Warchiefs out, you just go to the riot mission and try to kill the Warchief as fast as possible. (Just make sure your dominated Warchief doesn't die or escape while doing the riots) Going to a spawn tower and pressing Y will "Advance Time" and by doing so you can turn the other Captains (unknown or not) into Warchiefs and continue to riot against them with your dominated Warchief. Doing this you will have no problem getting under the time limit. The only problem you might have is killing some of the Warchiefs. One of the Warchiefs you can kill with a stealth takedown but some of the others are tricky. For the Warchief with the crazy rocket arrow shooter, the beast killer I believe, you can kill him with Shadow Strikes. Just spam him with it by holding LT and pressing X, don't even give him a chance. Shagflak the grul tamer Warchief basically can't be hurt by your attacks, but you can combat drain his guys and they will attack him and kill him or you can grab a graug if theres one close by.
Now for the points, which was my only problem after using dominating and riot technique. The best way to make extra points in my opinion is executing controlled monsters. Towards the end I was coming up short in points so I was shadow mounting caragors and graugs and then killing them by holding RT and then hitting B (I think) to kill. It gives you 150 for a caragor and 200 for a graug. If you kill your tamed monsters while your going through your 40 minute run you should have no problem with the points. I didn't start killing my beasts until my last 10 minutes. Well good luck with this achievement and I hope this helps you, please feel free to ask me any questions.
1. soon as you spawn look down and left and you'll see orcs with slaves. shadow strike, don't kill one of them knocking them down then grab the other and dominate for intel. If more than two, fight and auto brand them till you have enough on your side and then grab and dominate for intel.
2. after this first group, look over the bridge and you'll see more, keep shadow striking and grabbing to dominate. if there is a large group, you may have tofight a few seconds to brand some prior to dominating for intel. These guys respawn very often but ifthey are gone look down and you'll see caragors fighting orcs. shadow mount and immediately kill the caragors then continue grabbing orcs to dominate for intel. they are all over this area walking both down below and up top. You can see the ones up top from the ground at bottom and can shadow strike up to them if youdon't have any guys down below.
3. Green intel. there is always green intel around this area either in orcs walking below, the first set of slaves or the archers tower directly across for thespawn forge tower. use this unlock atleast one warchief. The one you really want is Kugor beast hunter with the fire arrows, not Ugakuga. Ugakuga tends not to fight often and the one warchief is a combat master and resistant to range so it takes forever to kill him. Kugor just fires his arrows at him on fire and he dies within a minute. Also, Kugor is susceptible to ranged and takes 6 arrows to kill him enough tojust walk up and dominate him. Boom, easy peezy.
4. You should be able to get all 20 captains location, atleast one warchief and be on a graug before 8minutes passes by. I did it at exactly 7:02. The easiest graug bate is hanging from the suspension bridge directly across from the spawn forge tower. Soon as you get on, bring up the map and go directly left across the map to the bottom left hand side killing captains as you go but do not kill captains in power struggles, leave them for warchief. The bottom middle stronghold usually has 3-5 in there alone plus on the sides of them. Once here, Go straight up to the top left hand stronghold. You can run through here with Graug and kill as you go. Now go down and right across the top of map top right stronghold killing captains as you go. The top right stronghold has an area in back where Graug can't go so save this area for last. Kill these captains as fast as you can then jump over the edge and hang out of sight till the red arrows go away allowing you to fast travel.
5. Bring up map and fast travel to spawn forge tower closest to Kugor or your warchief's mission to call him out. Do all the captains in power struggles first so they are dead when you fight warchiefs and immediately take out their followers with arrows. This causes warchief to focus on main opponent. Now use arrows on enemy if you can, if not drop down and fight using your two finishers every time combo goes red and you should beat each one inside a minute.
6. Fight any warchief in any order. The hardest one is Shagfluk b/c he can't take damage from arrows or combat finishers. This is where Kugor comes in b/c the fire arrows wipes him right out while Ugakuga doesn't fight that often unfortunately.
7. Once you are done and the only warchief left is your own, you should have atleast 10,600 points. If you don't try finding some caragors or Graugs to kill as they give you over 100 and 200 each pointwise. Once you have 10,600, kill your warchief. You will get just under 500 for killing him, another 1,000 for completing the mission and then another 1,000 bonus for doing it under 40 mintues, this will put you right over the 13,000 point mark. I had 11,876 when I dispatched mine and finished with over 14,400 once I dispatched my warchief.
Hope this helps as by far this is the hardest achievement I've tried to get ever. thanks to roose91 for providing the framework
All you have to do is:
1- Find any worm as soon as the timer starts, brand him to gather intel of any Warchief.
2- Once that Warchief mission appears on your map, go and start it, ignore any captains you may find on your way.
"Optional" you can kill his bodyguards first using a Graug to make his fight more smooth, but I found out that killing them during the Warchief fight takes lesser time, also drawing their weaknesses is pretty easy.
3- Don't kill the Warchief and try as hard as you can not to perform any execution to him when his health bar is less than 20%, you have to rely on your regular hits till he give up hence giving you a chance to brand him.
4- IT'S GRAUG TIME BABY! make your branded Warchief kills all other Warchiefs, you'll kill two birds with one stone as you'll work towards "10 captains kill by monsters" by killing the watchief's bodyguards with your Graug, and you'll also work towards killing all Warchiefs.
5- Since I've mentioned the importance of Graugs so many times, the image below shows you all Graug baits so you can check it everytime to learn their nearest location when you're in a Riot mission.
6- Don't hesitate to kill Warchiefs by Graug, this will buy you a great time to kill all of them with less than 20:00 minutes.
7- Doing this method you should've kill all captains and warchiefs within 25 - 35 minutes. Now don't kill your branded warchief, check your score first, you've to be at 11,500 at least before ending his life, so if you're below that fast travel to the farthest east tower, and keep draw out the Graug then brand and kill him, fast travel again, continue doing that method will give you 100 XP every kill, so you should be fine after 8 or 10 kills.
8- This is your last step, once you're 11,500 or 12,000 .. Go to your branded Warchief, put an end to his miserable life aaaaand .. The achievement is yours!

Once you load the game up, enter wraith mode and open up your map. If you see a green intel icon go there immediately and get the intel. If you do not see anything quit and restart. Sometimes you will get multiple intels on your map. What you want to do is try and get Ukugagu. He is probably the best guy to get because he is a tank. He is good at staying alive and isnt too OP. Zugor is quite OP and can cause issues by killing the captains or body guards before you can eat them with a graug. Once you get one of those two battle them and defeat them so they drop to their knees and you get the option to dominate.
I ended up with Zugor so I tried to make the best out of the hand I was dealt. What I did was grab a graug after getting Zugor to appear and tried to eat as many of his 4 captains as possible. I got two of them and he killed the graug. So I beat him, trick to beating him is to build up your combo and shoot the fire arrow at him. Using the wraith punch + slashing will accomplish this.
Once you dominate him, you will want to command him to attack other warchiefs. Go for the ones with body guards. Below you will see a link and it will have the graug bait locations,
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=51799...
Use the Graug bait when you start the riot and eat the body guards then the warchief. After the battle is done, grab your warchief and command him again to another warchief. Once you send him away consume the Uruk under your control(You want to do this after commanding because it will kill your warchief if you dont send him away. You will get a lot of points plus 100 ponts for Graug kill.
Rinse and repeat until no warchiefs are left. I would then focus on the remaining monster kills needed by rioting the captains and once you hit your 10 kills start advancing days to get new Warchiefs and Captains. You do not need to worry about Captain kills, when a Captain is promoted, it counts it as a Captain's death but also removes a warchief death because there is now 1 more warchief now. The benefit of making new warchiefs is that they will get bodyguards making it quicker to get the other captains so you could actually probably just promote them and still get your monster kills.
TIPS:
-Remember to kill your followers after commanding the warchief to get points for all the kills plus Graug
-Mount Caragor's and Graugs whenever you see them during your playthrough. Killing them nets you 100 points per kill. Easy points with Caragors. They are everywhere.
- As mentioned above Killing a warchief nets you good points so you will want to advance days to get captains promoted. Plus those warchiefs make bodyguards out of the remaining Captains, which allows you to kill more in less time. So try to let a bodyguard escape once and a while.
-Avoid travelling. You have the ability to fast travel. Abuse it!
-Always fast travel to the next Riot area EVEN if it is at the same location. This is the only way to get the Graug bait to respawn.
Always check the surrounding area for a Captain after your riot. You might luck out and find one nearby. I had on occasion some interrupt my riots as well.
I actually finished at 30 mins but still needed points so I spent 9 mins killing graugs and Caragor near my warchief so I could kill him once time got close.
So, let's start looking for Intel on a Warchief.
I recommend Tumhorn, the requirements to make him appear are simple and also you won't have to waste time fighting him because he can stealth branded.
Grab also some Uruks and use them to send death threats to some Captains.
Once you find Tumhorn start his mission, free the Caragors and once the Warchief appears, wait for him to pass near you to Stealth Brand him with + .
At the end of the mission grab him and start a riot against another Warchief (choose someone with some bodyguards).
If the next is Zugor, hit with ranged attacks and try to take him out as soon as possible, otherwise he could kill Tumhorn or even you.
For all other Warchiefs use a Graug if possible, the video shows where to find bait to lure these beasts.
For each riot choose the Warchief with the most Captains as his bodyguards and when you face them make sure that one of the Captains remains alive and becomes a new Warchief.
This way the new Warchief will get at least 2 new bodyguards.
In short:
1- toss a riot at a Warchief who has bodyguards,
2- hit the Graug Bait,
3- ride the Graug ( + ) and use it to kill all except one of the captains,
4- kill the rival Warchief.
5- Let the surviving captain escape,
6- kill the Graug + (extra points earned)
7- grab Tumhorn and launch a new riot.
8- Before you teleport to new location, grab Uruks to send death threats to some captains (Optional, not all need to be marked).
9- Repeat point 1 to 8 until all Captains and Warchief are killed.
Note:
1- If there is no bait for Graug just defeat the rival Warchief and ignore the Captains/bodyguards.
2- if the next riot is near or in the same spot as before, you should use Fast travel, in order to make Graug baits respawn.

I was able to unlock this achievement on my 7th (or was it the 8th?) try following your advice.
I also recommend to use the best runes for your bow, because you will be using it a lot to get additional points. The runes that decrease the Focus depletion and the bow damage are the most essential. E.g. this way I was able to kill Zugor with my bow before he could do any damage to Tumhorn.
First thing to note here is that the clock slows down or completely stops during certain situations. It slows down while aiming the bow with Wraith Focus activated, when getting a speed boost from jumping over something or while riding a Caragor, and during certain QTEs. It also stops completely while you have your map/menu open.
This is super helpful for planning your strategy and taking your time with understanding the captains and their strengths/weaknesses. It's also helpful for figuring out where the nearest Graug bait is if you need it. For reference, here's a Steam community post with Graug bait locations:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=51799...
As with Roose91's solution, spend the first 6-8 minutes (fastest I ever did it was 6:30) dominating and interrogating the random Uruks on the ground near the starting tower. If you see Worms or Intel, grab them and get intel on the warchiefs. You really only need intel on Shagflak and Zugor, but getting intel on all doesn't hurt.
Once you have intel on all captains and the above 2 warchiefs, head to Shagflak's mission and draw him out. I say start with this guy because he's an invincible asshole who is immune to everything but getting eaten by a Graug. Trying to kill him in fair combat is possible, but it takes so @$%@#$! long you'll fail the achievement. So complete his mission and draw him, hopefully while avoiding any captains in the stronghold. Once he's out in the open, find the nearest Graug bait, shoot it, shadow mount the Graug, and then eat Shagflak's stupid, annoying face. Do NOT kill the Graug when you're done.
From there, pick a direction on your map: clockwise or counter-clockwise. Find the nearest captain to your current zone (starting with any captains in Shagflak's stronghold) and tag them in the map. This seems to draw them out rather than waiting for random appearances. Run with the Graug to that location and eat the next captain. DO NOT attempt to enter the stronghold in the Northeast corner of the map: it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a Graug into the back part of Tol Crossing, or into any part of Maw of Hope or Executioner's Watch. If there are any captains in this area, leave them for later.
Open your map and mark the next nearest target, rinse, lather, repeat until the only captains that remain are the ones in power struggles. This should take 8-12 minutes, giving you 12~14 monster kills against captains, and leaving you at about the 15~20 minute mark.
Hopefully, you've killed all of Zugor's bodyguards at this point. If not, NBD. His crossbow might be devastating but he has a pansy-ass weakness: he's vulnerable to ranged attacks (while the captains are randomized, the starting 5 warchiefs always have the same strengths and weaknesses). Do his mission and get into a safe position as soon as he appears. THE MOMENT he is in sight, activate Flame of Azkar and repeatedly Shadow Strike Zugor until his health is low. Be careful not to finish him off as you can chop his head off once his health is low enough. When his health reaches about 20%, start shooting him in the head with normal bow attacks (do NOT use Fire Arrows as this will kill him). He'll surrender and you can dominate him, making the rest of this achievement super easy.
Command Zugor to riot against the other 3 warchiefs. Go to the location and attack. Ashgarn is weak to stealth, so you can insta-kill him with a Strike from Above if you're lucky enough to be in position. Otherwise, Shadow of Acharn will give you the opportunity to Stealth Kill him instantly. Tumhorn and Ugakuga are both susceptible to combat finishers so you can use Storm of Urfael if you have to. Tumhorn and Ugakuga usually have 2 bodyguards each, so if you didn't kill their bodyguards with the Graug, make sure to finish them off BEFORE you kill the warchief, otherwise you'll have some difficulty later.
Dominating Zugor and killing the 3 non-Zugor warchiefs should take ~5 minutes, leaving you at around 20~25 minutes. Start sending Zugor on missions to riot against the captain that are in random power struggles. Save duels, since you can usually a two-fer out of these. Rioting against them will add a new power struggle in another location, usually one that's more convenient. Go there, kill them, then command Zugor to go to the next. Rioting against a captain in an ambush will move the other captain to the main map. Save the last Zugor riot for the very end.
At this point, you should have your abilities well charged up. Fast travel to the northeast stronghold, shadow mount a Caragath and race into the stronghold. Quickly identify the captains and fight them. A few bow shots should tell you if they're immune to ranged. If not, use Flame of Azkhar. If they don't Combat Master counter your combat finishers, use Storm of Urfael and repeatedly execute them to death. If they're immune to both, try Shadow of Acharn to get a quick stealth kill. If none work, try blowing up nearby stuff and pray you can set them on fire and/or kill them quickly with regularly combat. This can take 5-10 minutes, depending on how many of the bastards are hiding in this stronghold and how many Uruks you have to vault over to get to them. You should generally be at about the 30 minute mark when done here.
When you're down to just power struggles with duels and ambushes, do the duels first. Fast travel to the most conveniently located struggle and summon a graug if bait isn't 80 miles away, then eat whoever is left in the duel. If you've used Zugor to force ambushing captains to the main map, then you can run around and find those captains and eat them.
This should take 5 minutes, leaving you at ~35 minutes with 5 minutes to go and only one more Zugor power struggle. Go there, kill the target and press to pop Zugor's head AND the achievement at the same time.
Accessed via Main Menu's Trials of War, the Test of the Wild will ask players to eliminate all five Warchief and twenty Captains in Nurn in a single playthrough. In order to unlock this achievement, players will need to complete all three bonus objectives as seen below:
- Earn a total of 13,000 points
- Kill 10 captains with monsters (Wretched Graugs or Caragaths)
- Complete the trial within 40 minutes
With this in mind, make sure to follow the strategy detailed below to a tee, as made available by Roose91. There is very little room for error when attempting this achievement and it may even take multiple attempts before finally obtaining the achievement.
To start, activate the Test of the Wild via the Main Menu's Trials of War. As soon as it begins, peer off the ledge of the Forge Tower that you spawn in and immediately activate Focus Mode by holding the left trigger. In the distance, straight ahead, you will notice a small bridge with Graug bait hanging underneath. On the right side of this bridge, there will be two stationed Uruk near a campfire. As soon as you spot them, perform a Shadow Strike on one of the Uruk to stun him. Now immediately grab the second Uruk and tap to interrogate him. When Sauron's Army screen opens, click again on any of the Captains in order to reveal their identity. Now back out of Sauran's Army screen and click to kill the Uruk. Grab the second Uruk - who should be on his feet now - and repeat the interrogating scheme to find out the identity of a different Captain. After killing the second Uruk, immediately open the world map and fast travel back to the Forge Tower you started from.
You will be repeating this method mentioned above over and over again until you have the identities of all 20 Captains revealed. Take note that sometimes one Uruk will spawn by the campfire instead of two. If this happens, just proceed as normal. Also, sometimes one of the Uruk will be a Worm, or there might be even be a Worm very close on the cliffside to the right of the campfire. If you're close to a Worm, interrogate him as normal but this time, choose to reveal the identity of one of the Warchiefs. The Warchief you want to uncover is Ugakuga Graug Rider. Since the game is randomly generated each time, you may not get him on your first try. If you reveal another Warchief first, just carry on with the "Captain Reveal" method. If you do uncover Ugakuga, then this is really good. Overall, you want to try to have all 20 Captains revealed by the 7:30 mark.
As soon as you reveal the identity of the 20th Captain, fast travel back to the Forge Tower. This time, shoot the Graug Bait and wait about ten seconds for the Wretched Graug to appear. When it does, perform a shadow mount from the Forge Tower and pause your game to open the Sauron's Army screen. The timer will pause here so don't worry about staying in this menu for a long time. Begin checking the location of each Captain. About four or five will be in Power Struggle missions, so disregard those. Continue to scroll through the Captains and make mental notes of how many are in the same general area. There will usually be three to four per stronghold: Northwest Fishery Strong, Northeast Fort Stronghold, and South Shantytown Stronghold. The remainder of the other Captains will always be randomly scattered across Nurn.
After taking their locations into account, return to the game and begin riding your Graug to the first location of your choosing. Make sure to enter Wraith Mode when you enter the general area of a Captain to spot him with ease; he'll appear as a red outline compared to the regular Uruk. Once you find a Captain, approach him with your Graug and get ready to perform a Bite Attack () to instantly kill him. This will count as a monster kill for one of the bonus objectives.
You're going to need to set out across the region and continue doing this nine more times. If you're in a stronghold, make sure to eliminate all the Captains there before leaving so you don't waste time just having to come back once you leave. Generally, the South Shantytown Stronghold has plenty of open space for the Graug to move around, but the Fishery and the Fort are really tight. You're going to need to make good judgment calls on which Captains you want to kill via Graug. Overall, you want to try to have 10 Captains killed via Graug by around the 20:00 or 22:00 mark. When you kill your 10th Captain, perform a "mount kill" on your Graug for some extra points.
After that objective is complete, hopefully Ugakuga Graug Rider has been revealed. If not, you may want to restart the trial as he's vital by this point. Head on over to Ugakuga's marked mission on the map and start it. You'll be tasked with eliminating 5 of his supporters without raising an alarm. Once you complete this task and he shows up, kill any of his bodyguards before dealing with him. When fighting Ugakuga, drop his health to about a third and then stop performing combo executions. Rather, just perform regular hits until he surrenders. Here, dominate his mind using and then tap to issue a command in Rioting against another Warchief. As soon as you do this, open the world map, mark the newly created Riot - represented by a blue Power Struggle icon - and head on over there. If it's really far away, utilize the fast travel through the world map. Once you reach the Riot, begin the mission and defeat the opponent and his bodyguards, ensuring Ugakuga makes it out alive. Utilizing Riots is important here because it skips out on the "luring out" missions necessary for every Warchief.
With that said, Ugakuga is a great ally during this time because as a Berserker Uruk, he'll often time perform deadly charge/beatdown attacks on his foes that nearly drain all their health. Anyways, during each Riot, remember to kill bodyguards first while combat branding (+) the lesser Uruk. Always deal with the Warchief last. After the first Riot is settled, Ugakuga will remain in the area so grab him and command him to start a Riot with another Warchief. You're basically going to repeat this process until all the Warchiefs are dead.
One of the Warchiefs, Zugor, should always be tackled with the Flame of Azkar ability. As for Shagflak, this Warchief is immune to almost everything, so try to hang back while Ugakuga and his army take him on. The other two Warchiefs are extremely easy to defeat so there's not much worth discussing about them. After all the Warchiefs have died, there should be maybe 4 or 5 Captains left. Sometimes, one of these Captains is automatically promoted to Warchief and the remaining Captains become his bodyguards. If this happens, this is absolutely great for your playthrough so continue utilizing the Riot method to kill the remaining opponents.
At this point, you should have around 37:00 or 38:00 minutes on the clock. If so, you're doing great. Make sure to keep Ugakuga alive though after every other Warchief and Captain is dead. Don't dispatch Ugakuga yet or you'll mess up this achievement. You probably need a few thousand points at this time as well to finish the second bonus objective. Generally, you want to have around 10,500 or 11,000 points at this time. If you don't, consider restarting the trial. If you're on track with points, quickly begin roaming around Nurn. Shadow mounting Caragaths and then performing a "mount kill" on them nets a decent amount of quick points (150) and you can even tackle large groups of Uruk inside strongholds (that is, if you're already near one from your last riot) for a few extra hundred combat points.
Basically, you're going to be racing the clock here, trying to amass at least 11,800 points. Once you reach that number, go ahead and quickly press down on the d-pad to dispatch Ugakuga and his army of branded Uruk. This will net around 200-400 points. Additionally, you're going to receive an extra 1,000 points as a bonus for completing the first two bonus objectives under 40:00 minutes.
For a slightly modified strategy, don't hesitate in utilizing the video provided below by Roose91.
If you're successful in completing this trial with all the bonus objectives checked off by the end, then congratulations, you've finally earned the expansion's most difficult achievement! Once again, this detailed strategy was made available by Roose91, so another big thanks, Roose.
- Kill 5 Beastmaster War-chiefs and 20 Captains (in other words, kill all leaders and do it without dying)
- Kill 10 Captains with Monsters
- Attain 13,000 points
- Complete in 40 minutes
There are many different strategies everywhere for how people have achieved this trophy. Initially I was strongly considering posting video, but for one simple reason I am not going to do that: the locations of all captains and their weaknesses is random! So even if you have someone's video, you cannot mimic what they are doing because your captains will not be in the same locations with the same weaknesses. Outside of that, all of the actions in the video are going to be normal game mechanics that you already know how to do.
I will post in detail in the spoiler below exactly how I achieved this trophy. Even with these suggestions, the trophy does not leave a lot of room for error. It took me around 5 hours to complete.
The primary objective is what controls the "ending" of the mission, so once you have 5 War-chiefs and 20 Captains registered your "test" will end. At the conclusion screen, if you have achieved all 3 of the bonus objectives then your score will post to the Elite leaderboard (if you have an internet connection) and the trophy will pop.
To start Test of the Wild you must go back to the Main Menu of the game, then select Play followed by Trials of War and then Test of the Wild. This will start a new test that will be saved in your current save slot.
This brings up another crucial element that I strongly suggest you use for your playthrough: control your ability to save your current state in Test of the Wild. Unless you really want a super serious challenge, save at key points to change the difficulty of this trophy from a 9/10 to a 5/10.
As you should know by now, there is no easy in-game way to make individual saves as it uses an auto-save function. The good news is that the game always auto-saves whenever you fight a Captain or a War-chief (win or lose), and it saves immediately at the conclusion of the fight. So if your time management is going good, this is the time to exit the game and save to USB/cloud.
To save your game state, exit out of your game and save your Mordor game files to either a USB stick or your on-line cloud storage. To reload your save, copy from USB/cloud to System Storage, start the game back up, and then select Continue while in the Trials of War menu.
It is entirely possible to achieve this trophy with one playthrough using "saves" and the Riot game mechanic. In my case, I did do it in one playthrough but I reloaded from saves many times. Here is what I did:
- As the test begins, immediately look for the Power Struggle in your game map that is closest.
- Make sure that you Brand the Captain in this first fight so that you can use him for Intel on a War-chief.
- Reminder: To Brand hold to grab the Captain, then press to Dominate, then press again to Gain Intel.
- Select one of the unknown War-chiefs to find Intel on. If it is not Ûgakûga Graug Rider or Zûgor Beast Butcher I suggest restarting the Test as I found these two to be the best to use for the Riots.
- Immediately go after this War-chief. It is crucial that you successfully Brand this War-chief. However, instead of using for Gain Intel press instead to Command him to start a Riot against one of the other War-chiefs.
- Note: I very strongly recommend using a Graug to take out all bodyguards of a War-chief BEFORE branding or killing the War-chief. It saves massive time and you need the easy Monster kills. A Graug eating a War-chief does NOT count as a Monster kill of a "Captain".
- Kill the other 4 War-chiefs. At the Riot conclusion, always run up and re-brand your Branded War-chief so that you can Command him to perform the next Riot. Immediately after that, press to get easy points from whatever branded Uruks are remaining.
- You should have your branded War-chief (still alive) and the other 4 War-chiefs dead by around the 15-18 minute mark. In my playthrough I reached this at 18 minutes with 8 Captains killed and 7 Monster kills.
- After killing the last War-chief, have your branded War-chief begin starting Riots against Captains.
- At this point I did all of the available power struggles, especially the ones that have 2 Captains in them. You really want to keep the Captain kills to 90 seconds or less.
- Continue using Riots if there are no Power Struggles left.
- To be safe you will need to have 11,000 points before your last Captain. You will get 1,000 points for completing the bonus objectives and 1,000 points for completing the test.
- When you get down to killing the last Captain, make sure that it is a Riot so that you can immediately kill your branded War-chief to complete the test. You do not want to waste time summoning him.
Comments:
- The clock is paused while in any of the menus so use this to your advantage.
- You will not have Wraith speed (it is locked) so use Shadow Strike as much as possible to close long distances as fast as possible.
- Heavily use saves. Always performs save immediately after you kill a captain and there are no more close by. Do not run to safety or finish killing the other enemies; just exit the game and go make a save. This alone saved me about 20 seconds per Captain. Seems obvious, but it wasn't to me at first.
- Another thing about being able to save, take advantage of the ability to run around and figure out where all of the "random" Captains were placed and their vulnerabilities. You can reload your save and still know exactly where they are at, thereby saving a large amount of time finding them.
- Always go for the Power Struggles that are closest to a Fast Travel tower.
- You can use and abuse the game mechanics in that if you "save" immediately after defeating a captain or War-chief before bringing up the game map, on "save" reloads you can change the random location that a new Power Struggle begins. For example: you defeat a captain, then make a "save". After you have reloaded the game, open your map. If there is a new Power Struggle available it will now randomly find a location on the map. The type of struggle will not change, but its location will. This only works while the struggle is "New" and you have not saved its randomly determined location. This is handy if you are trying to get a Power Struggle next to an easy Graug bait for a Monster kill.
- I strongly recommend using Graugs for the Monster kills as it is way easier and they last way longer when surrounded by Uruks.
- Try to get the Monster kills out of the way as fast as possible; look everywhere for Graug baits.
- Zûgor is a pain to kill quickly. I strongly suggest using Flame of Azhâr (activate with + when you have done enough bow kills and your bar is full). This gives you unlimited Elf-shot and Fire Arrows for 15 seconds.
- If you need more points, I strongly suggest Shadow Mounting Caragaths or Graugs, then dismounting and killing them with +. They give 100 base points, plus whatever small bonus they might give. Use Fast Travel to reset the enemies.
- I found running to Captain locations to just plain take too much time, but if you happen to find a cluster of Captains that you can quickly run to then by all means do that instead of using a Power Struggle or Riot.
The following notes are my saves for a time frame of reference. This will just give you an idea of what to shoot for. It is very possible to beat my times as some fights did take longer than they should have.
- Legend: m=minutes | WC=War-chief | C=Captain | M=Monster kill
- 7m - Ûgakûga branded + 2 C + 0 M (1 bodyguards)
- 10m - 1 WC + 2 C + 0 M (0 bodyguards)
- 14m - 2 WC + 5 C + 3 M (3 bodyguards)
- 17m - 3 WC + 8 C + 6 M (3 bodyguards)
- 18m - 4 WC + 8 C + 6 M (0 bodyguards)
- 20m - 4 WC + 9 C + 7 M
- 23m - 4 WC + 10 C + 8 M
- 25m - 4 WC + 11 C + 9 M
- 28m - 4 WC + 12 C + 9 M
- 29m - 4 WC + 13 C + 9 M
- 31m - 4 WC + 14 C + 9 M
- 35m - 4 WC + 17 C + 10 M
- 36m - 4 WC + 18 C + 10 M
- 38m - 4 WC + 19 C + 10 M
- 39m39s - 5 WC + 20 C + 10 M (Trophy)
- Note: I did not have to farm any points and ended up with a little over 14,000.
Conditions for receiving:
- Kill 5 leaders and 20 captains
- Kill 10 captains using animals
- Score 13,000 points
- Complete the task in less than 40 minutes (+ 1000 points)
The main problem is 40 minutes, this is very little, so you will have to act as quickly as possible. Procedure to get the achievement:
- Our first task will be to find out the location of all 20 captains, for this we interrogate the orcs, you can even interrogate ordinary orcs, because we only need the location of the captains. This stage should take you about 5-6 minutes
- Find the vile kraug by shooting at the kraug bait (I used the bait near the right northern castle)
- The next stage is killing captains with the help of a kraug. To do this, we are developing a route plan depending on the location of the freely walking captains. In order for the captain to appear 100% on the territory, he must be selected in the menu of Sauron’s army.
- After killing all the freely walking captains, we begin to kill those who are on a mission. By the end of this stage you should have about 16-18 captains killed and about 20 minutes of time remaining.
- We find a leader and brand him, I advise you to brand a leader who can be beaten in open battle (who has no protection from melee attacks), it will be much faster
- We send our leader to rebel against another leader and help him kill his opponent. Some leaders will come as captains alive, so we kill them too.
- After killing all the leaders and captains, we deal with our branded leader with one button
A few tries and you will be able to figure out all the fastest routes and get this trophy.
