How to unlock the The Last Night achievement in Moonscars - Definitive Guide

This boss is split in to two separate fights in the Earth Bowels. If you’ve come here to check if your achievement is broken after beating him the first time - don’t worry. You’ll face him again later!

I found this boss to be a sharp spike in difficulty compared with Wanda who is the boss prior to this one. It’s worth noting that the run back for this boss is annoying as hell, BUT it is totally worth dealing with some of the easier enemy zones (like right beneath the mirror) to raise your spite level for either a Healing or Witchery cost buff before skipping everything else and rushing to the boss room.

Loadout recommendation:

Amulet Stones
1)Witchery Cost Gemstone (for cheaper spells, available from the Mould for 14 glands)
2)Fierce Fencer Gemstone (for Damage boost)
3)Dashing Gemstone (for Double dash)

Witcheries
1)Chain Boulder (Lv.1 works fine)
2) N/A

Special Attack
N/A

Note:
1)The windows available for healing are very tight. Especially when the head is actively chasing you. Your best healing windows are when the head is practically off screen or even during your main DPS window. Prioritise hitting the head to briefly immobilise it when it is chasing you, if you don’t he will make your life a misery.

2)This boss is immune to regular attacks. The floating head must be hit with a Witchery in order to begin DPS with your light attack on a red weak spot that plops out of his rib cage. You can get off x3, 3-hit combo’s in before you need to dash away. Try not to stand on top of the DPS zone, as your sprite will probably swing past it and you will miss out on valuable damage, step back a bit. Trust me, you don’t want this fight lasting longer than it needs to. I would avoid Special Attacks as their wind up is far too long to be useful here, and you want to be able to dash away as quickly as possible.

3)The head is a pain to hit, hence I suggest using the Chain Boulder Witchery. It auto-locks as long as you are reasonably close. If the head is in the air you can jump underneath it and pull LT and it will hit him. I found other Witchery spells that required aim were too difficult to think about whilst trying to dodge all the spikes/attacks.

4)This fight is all about Ichor gain, any free moment you have where you're not healing will be hitting the legs/head for Ichor gain.

General flow:
Start the fight and try to position yourself next to the sides by the legs at all times.

He will swipe his legs at you, from the outside towards the middle which can be easily jumped over. The jump direction should be outwards towards the sides, otherwise you risk landing on the swipe as it passes and taking damage. You can dash as well if you wish but you risk hitting the spikes at the sides. I would avoid dashing unless you are also trying to avoid the head at the same time.

He will also slam his arms in to the ground which will send out shockwaves/clouds from the middle to the outside. You need to deal with this in the same way as the legs except your jump/dash should be from the outside toward the middle.

Meanwhile spikes from the ceiling will be falling periodically. This intensifies as the fight progresses.

The head will occasionally fire red projectiles at you. Keep on the move, this fight is a non-stop dash fest.

The head will otherwise chase you around the entire time and is pretty aggressive. You want to be hitting it with your chain boulder ASAP to disable it and begin dps. If you let it go unstunned for too long the head may use an AOE blast attack, if you’re already swiping at him when this triggers (there will be a faint circle outline around him) go for a couple of hits before double dashing away/through him.

You will need to try this fight few times to get in to a rhythm of dodging his attacks. Any time the boss is passive which will only occur for brief moments in between attacks, you will want to attack the legs for extra Ichor build up. Every sword swipe counts here - just be ready to jump/dash as soon as his arms/legs start moving.

There is a lot going on here - this will test your patience. Once you’re done - the achievement won’t pop. That was just Round 1. I’ve attached a game clip of my last 60 seconds in this fight for reference so you can see the rhythm. I do get hit a couple of times, it’s really difficult to avoid everything!

Further south in the level we pick up this fight again for Round 2. The run back for this one is FAR better.

Loadout:
The same as before BUT we need to equip two specific Witcheries instead of just one.
Chain Boulder (Lv.1 works fine)
Burst (Lv. 1 works fine)

General flow:
Round 2 with Cruel Lajos has 2 phases. The first phase is entirely the same as before, given your familiarity with the fight at this point you should breeze through it.

The second phase sees the head disappear, and you’ve now got two floating hands to contend with. Do not be fooled, they are NOT your primary target.

Your primary target and laser focus should be on the rib cage - where your old DPS spot was. You’re going to hit it with the Burst Witchery, and it will open up, and you’re going to wail on it. This time the attacks won't stop when DPS begins so it gets pretty frantic.

Whilst you do this the arms will be mostly slamming the ground in the middle, sending out shockwaves in both directions (he does a varient of this where he slams 3 times in a row) OR throwing projectiles at you often alternating between the two. The floating hands will take turns coming down to say hello, and do an AOE attack. Oh, and you’ve still got those pesky falling ceiling spikes to contend with.

This is pretty busy, and you will be firing your Burst ASAP, getting in 3 hits, jumping and or dashing outwards, then moving back in for another 3 hits, jump and dash outwards etc etc until the dps phase ends. If you managed to dodge enough and you didn’t tank too many hits then you should go straight back in for more - get your Burst off quick, and repeat the process.

You will undoubtedly need to heal, your best opportunity is in between arm attacks, whilst the hands are not close by. The timings will be tight, just like before.

Ichor gain, is again the name of the game. Your best source is hitting the rib cage on the same spot where you're aiming your Burst to start DPS. If you manage to swipe the hands amongst the chaos then that's just bonus Ichor.

Here’s another capture of my last 60 seconds in this fight.

I didn’t find phase 2 anything like as difficult as my first time fighting this guy earlier in the level.

Best of luck.
