How to unlock the The Strong, Silent Type achievement in Oxenfree - Definitive Guide

In order of obtaining this achievement, you can't say a word during an entire playthrough.

What does that mean? This means you have to keep your fingers off the cn_X, cn_Y, cn_B buttons. But keep in mind that there are some exceptions, so don't panic if your character talks sometimes.

- Some interactions with objects make Alex talk automatically, for example, opening some doors, using the radio transmitters or pushing the dumpster at the beginning. This is ok, the cn_A button talking won't void the achievement.

- You can interact with optional objects with cn_A, which will also trigger automatic dialogue (I did it a couple of times during my playthrough, and got the achievement anyways), but I recommend to go for this achievement once you have completed the game once or twice, that way you'll know what to do and will be able to just only interact using cn_A with the objects needed to progress.

- Also, DugFreez has confirmed in another solution that there's an unavoidable dialog option at the end, when you have to pick Alex's future: "The game shows a final still picture and you have 3 dialog choices using the X, Y, and B buttons. I tried to wait it out, but you can not. At this point you have to press X, Y or B. Thankfully the achievement still unlocks...so that last use of X, Y or B does not count against the achievement".

So, the main rule is NEVER use cn_X, cn_Y or cn_B dialog options. If, for some reason, you get distracted and talk, dashboard, press menu and exit the game. The game only saves when you enter an area, and probably pausing and going to the main menu would be enough, but do it this way, just in case.

Also, not talking in the entire playthrough will grant you the following achievements, if you don't have them already (thanks again DugFreez for the confirmation):

After saving Ren, WTF am I suppose to do? I cannot go forward to the outpost, nor get back. They said something about having a plan first. I never took the call from Alyssa in the tower.

For an achievement where it says to never say anything, she sure does talk a lot - 3 times already before the caves when pressing cn_A

As well, this is one of the better acheivements in the game since I don't have to listen to her speak as much.... Shitty game!

Do you still pick the dialogue for the 3 times when you are the person in the mirror? Going for this cheevo right now. I liked the first two playthroughs since some cool stuff happened the second one, but it looks like this one is gonna be a chore. Thankfully it's not too long.

FWIW - just got this, fairly straightforward and exactly as amenazamenor detailed above. Don't touch X, Y, or B, but you can touch A all you want, even to people when you're clearly about to talk to them, just never touch anything but A, including when you're the person in the mirror - even then, you've got to let it just fade out (though it takes much longer for those.) The only exception is when you're looking at the photo at the very, very end and the words never fade.

Thanks for the writeup, amenazamenor!

Same. Just did a silent playthrough and the achievement didn't work, I don't understand what I could have done (story wise) for this to not pop? Urghhhhh

I didn't get the achievement. The only time I talked was at the end when you have to pick the final choice. Pretty disappointed. Can't be bothered going back through for it to maybe pop.

same with me I continued the loop and made a silent run, didn't pop. then a cleared the timeline from the option menu, and went through again and did the same thing. so my advice to anyone is do that, it won't do any harm and prevent any talk values to continue over to the silent run.

Just curious, I'm starting my second play through, but when I restart, do I have to choose to erase my timeline? I chose to restart with the extended timeline, but does that void it?

UPDATE: I still unlocked the achievement continuing the storyline. And I highly recommend getting this achievement on your third play through, because the game is very different the second time around and you should just play it to enjoy it.

I unlocked this achievement and I definitely used B to close the map screen at least once.
So pressing B to close the map didn't seem to affect it for me.

Since nobody has listed it, I will list the dialogue choices for the only part of the game where you have to select a dialogue option, which is at the very end of the game where Alex has to make a decision for her future. If the original solution poster wants to include this, they can.

The dialogue choices are as follows:

"I left town for school."

"I'm taking some time off."

"I went to college here."

Once you see those EXACT options, that is your cue to pick an option.

Obviously, in any other case, do not make any dialogue choices and just wait for the timer to run out for each choice.

You cannot talk during the scenes where you tell another version of yourself what to do. I did that and did not get the achievement.

I just had the achievement on my 1st silent and playthrough. Never pressed the buttons except A sometimes, even when interacting with unnecessary objects, and that popped correctly.

If that can help..;)

(Do not talk to your reflections, do not go talk with people , avoid everything)

On my 2nd run I did the silent playthrough. I got the achievement without any issues. After the "cave incident" I started interacting with the environment which would Alex use to start conversations, but I did not reply to the questions, by doing so I had additional conversations where I stayed quiet.

I tried to exploit the Xbox save system and after finishing the silent playthrough start the last checkpoint before entering the bunker to see if I can get the mean achievement. Unfortunately it's not enough to unfriend everyone.

confirmed it works. no issues. but i saw other people saying it pops as soon as you make a selection. mine didn't pop till credits and i started to freak out. completely unnecessary to make people play through 3 times. was a lot of fun the first. okay the second. boring the third.

Thanks for the timeframe for the silent playthrough. I hate when you have to have multiple playthroughs to get achievements. At least it isn't too long...

Anyone know when the achievement pops?

The achievement popped for me immediately after I made the final selection (the "unavoidable dialog" mentioned in the solution) at the end of the game. Right at the point when the Oxenfree logo is displayed.

I had to do two attempts on the silent playthrough. Not sure why the first didn't work, although the game did freeze on me and I had to exit at one point, so that might have something to do with it.

Thanks for the guide. This achievement is ridiculous though. It FORCES a third playthrough which is frankly completely pointless. Simply dropped in to make achievement hunters spend some extra time on it. Sours the game a bit which is a shame.

What do you mean I can't say anything? I said a lot of stuff and still got the achievement.

Like Clueless NPC said, under 2 1/2 hours to complete. The ONLY time you touch the X, Y, or B buttons is when
The achievo pops immediately after.

Maybe those not getting the cheevo are doing what I did on my first try. Whenever the island map would pop-up to show you your next destination, I was closing it by pressing B. It took me over an hour of gameplay before I realized what I was doing. (Doh!!!)

Started a brand new game and Alexa only spoke very little and only when interacting with items that advance the plot. Ex.
It may be that with a new game, she didn't have much to talk about?

FYI,

Simply do not select any dialogue options the entire game. You can interact with objects or people, but do not click on any of the speech bubbles that appear above your character. Otherwise, you can play through the game normally.

The only exception is the very last dialogue option during the Epilogue of the game. A photograph of the surviving friends will fill the screen and a voiceover will explain what happened to each character. At this point, you MUST select a dialogue option to end the game and roll credits.

This is glitched if you play to completion, all letters, all stones first time without saying anything. eg say you know how the game plays after fully completing Xbox one version and you tackle this one to completion in 1 hit without saying anything. If you do it that way you won't get this achievement to unlock after fulfilling all requirements, stupid game.

The description for this is a bit misleading, as Alex will often speak no matter what you do. The real trick is to just make sure you never select a dialogue bubble with , , or . Ignore all these bubbles and let them disappear. So long as the only button you press during the entire game is , you will unlock the achievement. As I mentioned before, you'll talk often when pressing , but these dialogue lines do not affect the achievement.

Note: There is ONE unavoidable scene where you are required to use , , or ; right at the end of the game, the very last choice you can make about what you chose to do after the adventure.

This trophy description can initially be confusing, because Alex will often speak. What the trophy means is not to pick any of the dialogue options that pop up to give Alex the option to speak. Basically: go through the entire game only using .

At the very end of the game, during the epilogue photograph, you will have to choose one of the dialogue options. This will not void the trophy, and should be the only time you press or .
