How to unlock the General - Act 1 achievement in QUAKE 4 - Definitive Guide

Ooh general difficulty, this is about as hard as it comes. I've only finished Act 1 at the moment, so but I'll mention a few tips for conqueroring this as best as possible

- You HAVE to play conservatively. Aggressive and speed tactics work great on every other difficulty, but you'll get slaughtered on general. Enemies kill you in just few shots!
So use your machine gun primarily (You dont get the good guns like the rocket launcher and railgun until later) and grenade launcher. BUT BEWARE of heavy splash damage.
(Note the shotgun is also damn effective, just be extremely careful when you use it)

-The main enemies to avoid are the grunts, (green guys who charge you) beserkers, (Lightning guys who also charge) and those guys with grenade launchers. These guys WILL KILL YOU IN A SINGLE ATTACK. (If you dont have full armor) Keep backpedaling from em, and remember to spam the hell out of the save feature! I had on average 6 saves/level.

- Now Act 1 is considered the hardest part of the game, but it's the final scene (in the Nexus Hub) that gives people trouble. Save before you activate the console in the middle and make sure your health/armor is full, and you have grenade launcher equipped. First off you will fight two spider-like bots with rocket launchers. Keep pelting them with grenades and moving between the columns for cover. Try to keep your health as high as possible. (Mine was about 70 after this.)

- Now, INSTANTLY after you beat these 2 enemies, save again and aim at the door in the front of the room and fire as soon as the big boss opens the door. Hit him with a FULL CLIP of 'nades, then switch to the nailgun and hit him with a full clip of that. Finally pelt him with the hyperblaster until he shoots you with a purple ray and the level ends. This is extremely hard though, what I did was hide behind a column directly left of where he enters and he could not hit me with his rockets.

Good luck!

Revisiting the game and actually trying to 100% the story achievements.... man this is cheap. Just like Gears (love the series btw). The whole "enemies have 500% health and you have 10%" is just not fun.... Devs should realy choose one or the other but both is just cheap, unfun and unbalanced.

I wrote this while working at General Difficulty, but can be used to unlock -
Quake 4Private - Act 1The Private - Act 1 achievement in Quake 4 worth 26 pointsCompleted Act 1 with the rank of Private.

Quake 4Lieutenant - Act 1The Lieutenant - Act 1 achievement in Quake 4 worth 78 pointsCompleted Act 1 with the rank of Lieutenant.

Quake 4Corporal - Act 1The Corporal - Act 1 achievement in Quake 4 worth 40 pointsCompleted Act 1 with the rank of Corporal.

The difficulty achievements do not stack

The idea of this guide is to let you know some of the easier ways of doing this achievement. There is an excellent guide that I have given a link to that explains each of the levels. What it doesn’t do is let you know when you have to work for it and when you can just sit back. That’s what this guide is about.

Basic Tips
A) Save often
B) Always ask Tech and Medic to keep you topped out (B Button)
C) Don’t forget that you can sometimes backtrack on yourself, so if you pass Health Packs and Ammo you can get them when required.
D) Zooming in (LT) with Machine Gun will (sometimes) take out enemies without them moving, especially if they are at a distance.
E) You don’t always have to kill everyone who is in your way and there are no infinite respawns.

Use this guide to get you through the levels -

Act 1
Air Defense Bunker.
You should have no real trouble with this level, if you do I’d pack up now. Nearly all your help is invincible and so they do most of the work for you (though you do need to keep Anderson, The Medic, alive). Anderson will heal you, when not in battle.

Air Defense Trenches.
When you meet up with Sgt Morris, let him do all the work. He never died for me. I moved forward to get spawns and then hid.

Hanger Perimeter.
After the short cut scene I stood to the left of the door and let Sgt Morris do his thing. Then we moved forward and I again stood to the left of the corridor and he went to work on them. After regrouping with your team let them do the dirty work, just stay back and look at TA or something. Only ones to watch out for are the Beserker’s as they will wipe out the team. If any do die, just reload your save game
In the part where you climb a ladder and activate a bridge, I dropped back down the ladder and shot them from underneath. They never followed me down the ladder. This works for any area where you can shoot through the floor. Just use your Blaster as it saves ammo.

Interior Hanger.
After the lift you go into a room with turrets. Before the firefight go right when you enter the room and then left at the bottom and stand in the doorway (it’s up a few steps). I took out a few that spawned at this end with my Machine Gun and my team took out the rest and the turrets. All my team survived, though they have died in there before so make sure you have them all before moving on.

MCC Landing Site.
Time to do a little more TA. Voss, Morris and Sledge will do their thing. Voss and Sledge go into the next building with you and again, no shots wasted by me. After you blow the door, you’re on your own. After the cannon is blown up you’ll move till you meet up with Pvt Law. He’s another handy guy, but be careful when you enter the 2nd area as a Grunt comes at you and he will kill. The Grunt can be killed so Pvt Law stays alive, but don’t worry if he doesn’t as you go outside next and board The Hannibal.

Operation Advantage.
Nothing to tell you about this level.

Canyon.
You can’t mess this up. Just keep your finger on the trigger.

Perimeter Defense Station.
You’ll get Pvt Rodriguez (Medic) and PFC Singer to help you on your way. First room, I went to right and they cleared it. After that I never fired a shot until Tech Newberry opened the door. Newberry will die, but don’t worry about him, just continue. The other 2 stay back early on in the level. The rest of this level you’re on your own so just be smart .. save plenty and use cover where you can.

Aqueducts.
The first thing to do is Switch to Guns (LB) they work better than Rockets. If your shields are low, just find somewhere to sit it out and they will regenerate. Should breeze through this level.

Aqueducts Annex.
At the start move away from the Harvester (Red Spider) and use Rockets on it. When it fires its Rockets at you, you’ll hear a siren warning, just switch to Guns (LB) to take them out, then back to Rockets. When it’s dead, go through the door and use Guns all the way, don’t need to stop. When you reach the next 2 Harvesters, use same process and stay at a distance (they hardly move if you do).

Nexus Hub Tunnels.
At the beginning of this level is a massive stash of Ammo, Armour and Health. You’ll start with 3 guys, Straus, Voss and Morris. They’ll clear the area ahead while you sit and relax. The next section is just you and Tech Straus . In the room with the Gladiator, run past him and cover the rear while Straus works at the front. After he dies some others come into the room behind you. Same as always, Straus is pretty handy and takes them all out. When Straus works on the computer run around to the door you just came through (its locked now) but it makes it easier to kill the enemies and none of them attacked Straus. Battle your way back to Voss and Morris, then follow them as they obliterate everything that moves. You’ll get asked to switch off the Red Barrier so you’ll be on your own till the end of the level.

Nexus Hub.
You start with Straus. He’s not much use at the first bridge, but then goes on to clear most of the area’s for you with a little help. When you get into the room back past the elevator you started in be careful. Once the first 2 enemies are killed, there is a Gladiator on the left. With a little careful positioning, you can get him without being shot, using the Blaster. This works right until you have to go into the final room. If you follow the video posted by Z3RO 37 (Under Act 1 – General) you’ll see what to do next, though I don’t think it’s on General as it took me far more Grenades to kill the 2 spiders.

In order to beat the boss at the end of Act 1. All you have to do is after you beat the two spider things(using the Grenade Launcher). Then hide in the dark corner behind a pillar then use the nail gun. He shouldn't be able to hit you. It is alot easier than jumping around everywhere.

If you have played this game all the way through on the easier difficulties first (which I hope you have) then you should already be ready for the journey you're in for. However it is more important than ever to SAVE OFTEN and keep an eye on your health and ammo. Always pick up more whenever possible and SAVE after each battle (I can't stress that enough - lol).

Here is a video to help you beat the boss of Act 1 with EASE. You'll have to pardon the bad camera and sound.

I post this on the general difficulty as most people will look for guide on the hardest setting. So im hoping that people see it here and may use it.Not sure if this is the right place to post it but im sure it will make its way there.Apologies for not being a guide.

There is a way to unlock the achievement for Lieutenant Act 1 if you keep the game save for General Act 1 at the end boss of the chapter.

All of this must be done using the General difficulty save.
Use the save you have for the act boss and hurt it until it is almost dead.Make a save then die and while the loading screen is up , sign out and sign in with another account. before the game loads you back into the level. The game will register you on spawn as on Lieutenant.Die again and sign in with your main account then kill the boss.

I have had this little secret for 3yrs so sorry if i missed anything. You can make a save while on the other account to be safe while ingame incase you think you made a mistake.

Die to the Makron at the end of the act. You will know that you win when he shoots a purple ray at you. This is where it gets really hard. The Makron, depending on how much health and armor you have, can easily kill you in one-two shots with a hit. One from a grenade, two from his rays he shoots out. The best strategy is to try and get into the boss fight with at least 70 health and 70 armor, or at best 100 health 100 armor.. trust me you'll need it. Strafe jump and crouch to confuse the rays, and when he shoots the grenades out, run for the hills. After they shoot out and blow up, use all your nailgun and hyperblaster ammo. He will go down, he's just going to take a while. The best strategy to beat general is simple - Save everytime you kill a strogg. Trust me, you will have over 200 saves by the time Act 1 is complete. Autosave is useless. Try to conserve your ammo, snipe with the machine gun is a great option to conserve ammo. Just save constantly and it'll be a breeze!
