How to unlock the Private - Act 1 achievement in QUAKE 4 - Definitive Guide
The achievements don't stack so you have to beat Act 1 on Private difficulty.
Private is the easiest difficulty so it won't be hard, especially because you can save the game when ever you please. Just go through the game, at the end of Act 1, you will be sent in a room, and have to face the Makron, here is the thing, you can't kill him. What you need to do is just keep shooting it while you are pretty close to him, once he grabs you, you will have completed Act 1. The screen will go dark and you will unlock this achievement.

I wrote this while working at General Difficulty, but can be used to unlock -
The difficulty achievements do not stack
The idea of this guide is to let you know some of the easier ways of doing this achievement. There is an excellent guide that I have given a link to that explains each of the levels. What it doesn’t do is let you know when you have to work for it and when you can just sit back. That’s what this guide is about.
Basic Tips
A) Save often
B) Always ask Tech and Medic to keep you topped out (B Button)
C) Don’t forget that you can sometimes backtrack on yourself, so if you pass Health Packs and Ammo you can get them when required.
D) Zooming in (LT) with Machine Gun will (sometimes) take out enemies without them moving, especially if they are at a distance.
E) You don’t always have to kill everyone who is in your way and there are no infinite respawns.

Act 1
Air Defense Bunker.
You should have no real trouble with this level, if you do I’d pack up now. Nearly all your help is invincible and so they do most of the work for you (though you do need to keep Anderson, The Medic, alive). Anderson will heal you, when not in battle.
Air Defense Trenches.
When you meet up with Sgt Morris, let him do all the work. He never died for me. I moved forward to get spawns and then hid.
Hanger Perimeter.
After the short cut scene I stood to the left of the door and let Sgt Morris do his thing. Then we moved forward and I again stood to the left of the corridor and he went to work on them. After regrouping with your team let them do the dirty work, just stay back and look at TA or something. Only ones to watch out for are the Beserker’s as they will wipe out the team. If any do die, just reload your save game
In the part where you climb a ladder and activate a bridge, I dropped back down the ladder and shot them from underneath. They never followed me down the ladder. This works for any area where you can shoot through the floor. Just use your Blaster as it saves ammo.
Interior Hanger.
After the lift you go into a room with turrets. Before the firefight go right when you enter the room and then left at the bottom and stand in the doorway (it’s up a few steps). I took out a few that spawned at this end with my Machine Gun and my team took out the rest and the turrets. All my team survived, though they have died in there before so make sure you have them all before moving on.
MCC Landing Site.
Time to do a little more TA. Voss, Morris and Sledge will do their thing. Voss and Sledge go into the next building with you and again, no shots wasted by me. After you blow the door, you’re on your own. After the cannon is blown up you’ll move till you meet up with Pvt Law. He’s another handy guy, but be careful when you enter the 2nd area as a Grunt comes at you and he will kill. The Grunt can be killed so Pvt Law stays alive, but don’t worry if he doesn’t as you go outside next and board The Hannibal.
Operation Advantage.
Nothing to tell you about this level.
Canyon.
You can’t mess this up. Just keep your finger on the trigger.
Perimeter Defense Station.
You’ll get Pvt Rodriguez (Medic) and PFC Singer to help you on your way. First room, I went to right and they cleared it. After that I never fired a shot until Tech Newberry opened the door. Newberry will die, but don’t worry about him, just continue. The other 2 stay back early on in the level. The rest of this level you’re on your own so just be smart .. save plenty and use cover where you can.
Aqueducts.
The first thing to do is Switch to Guns (LB) they work better than Rockets. If your shields are low, just find somewhere to sit it out and they will regenerate. Should breeze through this level.
Aqueducts Annex.
At the start move away from the Harvester (Red Spider) and use Rockets on it. When it fires its Rockets at you, you’ll hear a siren warning, just switch to Guns (LB) to take them out, then back to Rockets. When it’s dead, go through the door and use Guns all the way, don’t need to stop. When you reach the next 2 Harvesters, use same process and stay at a distance (they hardly move if you do).
Nexus Hub Tunnels.
At the beginning of this level is a massive stash of Ammo, Armour and Health. You’ll start with 3 guys, Straus, Voss and Morris. They’ll clear the area ahead while you sit and relax. The next section is just you and Tech Straus . In the room with the Gladiator, run past him and cover the rear while Straus works at the front. After he dies some others come into the room behind you. Same as always, Straus is pretty handy and takes them all out. When Straus works on the computer run around to the door you just came through (its locked now) but it makes it easier to kill the enemies and none of them attacked Straus. Battle your way back to Voss and Morris, then follow them as they obliterate everything that moves. You’ll get asked to switch off the Red Barrier so you’ll be on your own till the end of the level.
Nexus Hub.
You start with Straus. He’s not much use at the first bridge, but then goes on to clear most of the area’s for you with a little help. When you get into the room back past the elevator you started in be careful. Once the first 2 enemies are killed, there is a Gladiator on the left. With a little careful positioning, you can get him without being shot, using the Blaster. This works right until you have to go into the final room. If you follow the video posted by Z3RO 37 (Under Act 1 – General) you’ll see what to do next, though I don’t think it’s on General as it took me far more Grenades to kill the 2 spiders.

Here is a link to a playlist of every level completed on General difficulty. Simply follow what this guy does, and you should be able to get any of the difficulty achievements without much problem.
*NOTE*
Save often. It'll really make this game a less of a pain if you're not replaying the same few minutes of the game over and over.

Not bad quality too, considering the game!
His run is about 4 hours, which actually doesn't sound so bad considering the ratios on these achievos.

Die to the Makron at the end of the act. You will know that you win when he shoots a purple ray at you. On easier difficulties it will take a full nail gun clip, then strafe with the hyperblaster. On harder difficulties, such as General, you will have to strafe jump and use two nail gun clips as well as some hyperblaster ammo.
