How to unlock the Ghost Slayer achievement in Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World - Definitive Guide

Getting to the "resilient Ghost" requires that you follow the game's side quest as follows:

In the cave in Round 2, you'll see a message: "Someone be beyond the wall." Press UP to enter the secret door and receive the Scroll To Catherine.

In Round 4, climb the ladder in the village and press UP to enter the hidden door to deliver the scroll to Catherine and receive the Flute.

In the third part of Round 7, go to the very last island and climb the ladder. You'll automatically play the flute, which will let you advance a bit further right to a large house. Enter the house, and among the enemies you'll fight are three blue ghosts (two before the knight and one after). These ghosts take several hits (somewhere around 20-30) to defeat and award you 30,000 points. Once you kill one of these ghosts, the achievement will pop up.

This was how I got mine, but you can also find these guys in one of the last halls of the final level.

They're in the very last hall, right by the steps leading up to the dragon. I didn't bother to mention them because frankly you're already hard pressed for time just getting to that point, and the ghosts take so long to kill. You can trap them against the steps so that they don't retreat so far away when struck, but I don't find that terribly reliable.

I got mine in the last hall because I didn't know about the side quest. It only took 20 or so seconds to kill them both with the sword of legend. The points probably aren't worth it at that point however since there isn't a place to heal from that point on, but you can still get the achievement then reload your save so you don't lose time and health.

The only reason I can see to kill them is if someone wanted more hearts (life) for the final fight, sacrificing his/her current life to rack up a higher score. If you make it to the dragon with little health and no medicine, it could be worth doing just that. Well, it would be if this were the arcade and not this version where you can abuse save states.

The achievement unlocks after destroying your first blue ghost in the game. The fastest way to encounter one is by following the established method for completing the Bell/Ruby side-quest:

Round 2B: Press up on the 3rd platform over the lava to get the Scroll. The exclamation point in the pic.

Round 4B: Press up on the window to the right of the shield store to get the flute. The exclamation point in the pic.

Round 7C: Climb the ladder partway through the stage and the flute will be played opened up a castle to the right. The exclamation point in the pic. Castle is the letter H.

This castle holds 3 of the blue ghosts right at the start. They are very tough and take a lot of hits with your sword to destroy. A quick and simple method to do this is to destroy the snakes first then get on the other side of the blue ghost (by jumping over or going under him) and hit him back towards the start. The ghost will eventually be backed into the wall where you can rapidly hit the attack button destroying him in a few seconds.

You enter from the right of the screen in the pic. The blue ghosts are before the center room marked "I".

These are in the final dungeon but killing one there will cost you a lot of life due to the time restrictions and you are going to need all the life you can get to defeat the dragon. If you wish you can save state at them, defeat one and load to get your life back

OR

You can do the games singular side quest to find another couple of blue ones and also get a ruby in the same side quest to make the final boss much easier and faster.
The side quest is as follows:
In Round 2, Part 2. (Inside the cave) on the 3rd floating platform you come to, push up to open a secret door. The person in here will give you a letter to start the quest.
In Round 4, Part 2 (outside shopping area) there is a secret door in the window to the right of the shield shop. Push up here and the person inside will exchange the letter for a flute.
In Round 7, Part 3 (just after you drop out of the clouds) Head all the way to the right and you will see a body of water . Swim through that and climb up the ladder on the other side. You will play the flute automatically and reveal the secret mansion on the right. Go over there and head inside. Once inside, Head left and kill the enemies. Here you will find the blue ghosts you are looking for along with a pink knight. Kill the pink knight and head onto the moving platform and hit up at its peak to obtain a charm
In Round 11, Part 2. When you sink down into this area make sure you hold to the left to access the shop. Enter and exit this shop twice (you can buy stuff if you want but you don't have to) to board it up. Once it's boarded up try and enter it once more and you will. You will swap the charm for the emblem behind here.
In the last part of the same round, use the last door before the exit and you will be offered either a bell or a ruby. If you take the bell it will help guide you through the final castle to the boss but you will have the whole final boss fight on your hands. If you take the ruby you will need to find your own way through the castle and the boss will be cut in almost half.
