How to unlock the Low Scorer achievement in Spelunky 2 - Definitive Guide

Low Scorer, a classic Spelunky achievement. Everyone hates it.

Okay some general rules and tips to start.
1. You must beat the final boss of the game with zero gold on you to net the achievement. The second you touch any money, the achievement is void.
2. You cannot have the monkey or leprechaun take money from you to get back to 0 have it count. You can whip gold or gems away from you and it will not pick them up for you.
3. This achievement is not only about platforming skills to avoid all money but also is about resource management. Since you will not be able to buy anything from shops and some crates will be blocked by money, you will be very low on resources and as such will need to use them wisely. Your health is also a resource that you need to manage. Get damsels when you can but don't go out of your way. Kapala is a very rare item on a run such as this so you'll need to take as little damage as possible if you want to make it to the end.
4. Using bombs is incredibly risky because of the tiny pieces of gold that are will inevitably fly around everywhere and are very hard to see.
5. Use extreme caution in any area where any blocks have been destroyed either from a boss or from outside explosions.
6. Anything can hide gold behind it including pots, dead bodies, items such as bomb bags or turkeys, so do not blindly walk over anything that is not literally an empty space on the ground.
7. Take your time but don't explore. What you're going for is the least amount of level explored so your chances of picking up any money are as low as possible. Curiosity killed the cat('s run).
8. Don't throw any jars unless it's absolutely necessary. They have money in them sometimes.

Okay, now I'm going to go through each area and talk about it a little.

Dwelling 1-1 through 1-3
Dwelling is the most important area of the game and thankfully one of the hardest for this achievement. Once it's out of the way, the rest of the run is a tiny bit easier until you hit Neo-Babylon. You do not want to use any resources in Dwelling unless it is specifically to obtain another resource (using a rope to reach another crate for example). If you find yourself trapped in a spot in Dwelling and you can't get past it without collecting the gold or bombing, just restart, you're at the beginning anyway, might as well go for a run that is open and easy. Another thing I would strongly suggest is to always steal from the shopkeeper on 1-2. Use a rope while standing on the shopkeeper to knock him back, and then steal everything in his shop including the shotgun that he dropped. This will not only give you a free boost on resources for the run but will also give you a free weapon that you can use to kill the boss. We want to carry this shotgun all the way with us to the end of the game to make the easiest boss kill. Do not kill the shopkeeper and do not hurt the shopkeeper on 1-3 when you are escaping. If done correctly, you will always be forgiven on 1-4 and you can continue your run without any more bothersome shopkeepers. Stealing bomb boxes or jetpacks will make this whole run sooo much easier, same goes for something as simple as a cape and climbing gloves. If you're having trouble, restart your run over and over until you get a shop that you like. Lastly, grab the Udjat Eye if at all possible. This will let you see gems in the blocks allowing you to more confidently bomb out certain areas of the level. A regular run through Dwelling will look something like this -> https://i.imgur.com/r8tWjjZ.mp4

Dwelling 1-4
Quillback can be and should be dealt with very quickly seeing as you have a shotgun in your hands and his main function is to break down blocks and throw gold around everywhere. As soon as he is finished destroying the wall in which you want to go, blast him to death but make sure not to shoot the bomb bag that he drops or it will explode. Picking up his drops is a risk. There is a good chance that there is some bits of gold hiding behind the bomb bag or the turkey. Personally, I always go for it but I tread very carefully and only stand in the spots I absolutely have to. The caves that lead to the exit on this level can softlock you as there can be gold in the tiny winding hallways. Use bombs here if you have to but unfortunately with bad luck, it can end your run here.

2-1 through 2-4
Volcana or Jungle? There are pros and cons to both. Volcana is more open and therefore more room to maneuver around the gold but at the same time has many tiny winding hallways that can be impossible to get around. Lava pools force you into one route and therefore can force you into unwanted money. There are also more explosions cause by robots that fly gold around and make it a literal minefield. Jungle imo is slightly more dangerous for this run because of the foliage that can hide gold. Tops of trees and grassy corners can hide the tiniest bits of gold and not to mention, the bear traps always have one piece of gold on them. If you see a triggered bear trap, you can be sure that there is one piece of gold somewhere on the ground. Could be anywhere. The dangers that also come with jungle can be far more punishing when your movement options are restricted such as avoiding curses from Witch Doctors. Take whichever route you prefer with these things in mind.

Olmec's Lair
Olmec's Lair can be very tricky and dangerous. What you'll want to do for this fight is have him smash down a hole that is two Olmec's wide. First, look down and find an area that looks like it won't have any gold on either edge of where the hole is going to be. Stand on one side of him, have him lift over you and then run to the other side. Once he smashes down, stay on the other side until he is frozen above you and then run back to the first place before he kills you. The only place that gold or gems can appear when done this way is on the very edge of Olmec. Right as he smashes down, look to see if any gold popped out. If so, next time you run to that side, simply stop before you reach the gold against the wall and don't touch it or jump over it if it on the side closest to you. If it's against the wall and you have to stop early, when he rises over you to smash again, he will make the hole slightly smaller, this is why we made it two Olmec's wide. Each time there is potential gold to pick up, the hole will get slightly smaller. If you're all the way against the wall when he stop above you, it will greatly lower the chance of gold popping out. Hopefully this only happens once or twice. Get him down to the bottom of the first layer and as soon as he crashes through, leave the lair.

Tide Pools
Don't go to Temple, its a nightmare. Tide Pools is the easiest area for this in my opinion but that doesn't mean to let your guard down. Some things to look out for. Foliage can hide gold. The pink spikes can also hide gold, don't walk through them all willy-nilly. I know you want to instinctively whip those crabs with the chests on their back but don't, please. We have bear traps here with tiny bits on gold on them, be aware. Pets are in easy to reach places in these levels for some reason so stock up while you can. At the same time, the undead move unpredictably and can whittle away your health, don't underestimate them just because they're easy. Take your time and you should move through here easily.

Ice Caves
Ice Caves are another literal minefield, both covered in mines and gold. Wait at the top of the level for the first 10- 20 seconds or so to let all of the things explode naturally that need to. You don't want to drop down immediately and get hit by either an explosion or flying gold. Once things have settled, make your way to the bottom of the level, being extremely wary of any loose gold that may have come from the blocks during the explosions. Don't jump on any UFO's that you don't have to, as per the bomb rule. There is a lot of room to move around in the Ice Caves so take advantage of that and give yourself plenty of room to avoid the gold. Don't go inside the caves of the ice caves. Instead, grab onto the block directly under the caves facing the opening and fall straight down. If done correctly, you should grab onto the block that is below it, safely skipping a majority of the level. If the safe block is destroyed, you'll have to go the normal way, sorry. ->https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/spelunky/images/5/53/Wet_F...

Neo-Babylon
If you've made it this far, there aren't really any new surprises here. There are just as many explosions as Ice Caves but you are in a way smaller space AND most explosions will not trigger until you are close to them as the electric balls are not activated until you are within a certain number of blocks from them. So, take your time, be extra extra careful, and pray to your god a piece of gold doesn't coming flying at your face. We need one bomb for the final boss but other than that, use bombs here sparingly to get past parts that are way too dangerous. Yes, we don't want to explode any gold or gems with bombs but if you're going to die trying to get past a part then its worth the risk. Always hide and shield your character from possible golden showers when using explosives. Safety first.

Tiamat
First things first. We need to make a slight adjustment to the block that is front of Tiamat's face. Get up to it by any means possible and bomb the very top of it. Make sure to hide after placing the bomb in case there is any gold in it. After that, we are simply going to place a rope against the wall, climb up it, and shoot Tiatmat with our shotgun until she dies. Once she is dead, drop down into the water, swim under the middle part to get to the exit to avoid any last second gold. Jump out of the water right into the exit. Run complete. Congrats.

Any tips for robbing shop in 2-1 when there is a locked door? The key that shopkeeper drops seems to take priority over the shotgun, so above method doesn't work. I pickup the key and then get killed by shopkeeper

Bring the shopkeep closer to the door so that he has enough room to fall back far enough so that you don't have to worry about picking him up but also make sure he is falling away from the door. As soon as you rope him, press down+x+x+x. What this does is pick up the key, drops the key in front of you, and then picks up the shotgun. The timing is tight but it's how I've always done it. Hope this helps!

This trophy requires you to make it through the game and beat Tiamat without picking up any money. It’s not entirely confirmed whether picking up money and spending it later is allowed so it is not recommended. You will also gain $100,000 gold for completing the game but this is not counted for the trophy so don’t worry about it.

This is very likely the most difficult trophy in the game. Making it through the game, while avoiding enemies, traps and obstacles is a feat in its own right. Doing all this while also avoiding each and every gold nugget, gold bar, gem and diamond scattered throughout the world, often barely visible, is just insanely difficult. You will quickly notice that every one of these being a literal landmine, ending your run instantly if you as much as touch one, makes the game even more difficult and especially, even more unfair. First and foremost, the game is obviously not balanced around being able to avoid picking up money. You will often find gold bars blocking a narrow path, effectively meaning there is nothing you can do but try and whip it away or to find another path. Secondly, any explosion can and will fling any gold and gems in the area through the air at high speed, making using bombs very dangerous, especially since blowing up a block with gold in it makes the surrounding area a literal minefield. For this reason, you should avoid using bombs as much as possible and if you have to use them, make sure not to hit any blocks with money in them. Grabbing the spectacles or the Udjat Eye can be very valuable for this reason, since they make it so that you can see which blocks contain gems as well as gold, allowing you to avoid blowing them up. The little gold pieces are especially dangerous, since they are very difficult, if not impossible to see. Luckily they don't spawn normally in the area and only come free from interactions with the player. These include: breaking blocks with gold ore, breaking vases or lighting torches.

Shops: Not picking up money has the rather obvious side-effect that you cannot buy anything. This is especially tough since you’ll likely need bombs, mobility items and a weapon to make it through the game. For this reason, I highly recommend trying to steal from the shopkeeper in 1-2 (and possibly 1-3 if the items are worth it) and try to get them to forgive you as soon as possible. To find out how to do this, see the section dedicated to robbing shopkeepers in The Full Spelunky trophy_platinum.png. Being hunted by shopkeepers not only makes every floor much more dangerous, killing one also makes him drop a ton of coins, which you will have to avoid each time. I therefore highly advise against killing them and instead learning to rob them effectively.

Useful items

Jetpack/Hoverpack: Both the jetpack and the hoverpack are very good items under normal circumstances. When trying for this trophy however, they become invaluable, allowing you to avoid touching the ground almost entirely, drastically lowering the risk of accidently stepping on any hidden gold. This goes for the cape and mounts too, albeit to a lesser extent.

Shotgun: The main use for the shotgun is to kill Tiamat. Killing her by tossing bombs at her is possible but not recommended due the risk of exploding a gold block. It is also valuable in dispatching enemies easily but watch out you don’t accidently shoot a vase or TNT block (or god forbid a shopkeeper or Tun) on the other side of the floor, since they can scatter gold around without you noticing.

Shield: Either the wooden or the metal shield will allow you to push gold and gems out of your way instead of picking them up, making walking in a straight path much safer. The metal shield can also crush gold by pressing it against a wall, allowing you to clear these obstacles with much more ease. Just be careful not to accidently jump on any gold, as the shield only blocks gold that lies directly in front of you.

Camera: This might seem like a weird choice but the camera can be an extremely powerful weapon in the right hands. It can kill Jiang shis and bats in one hit and stun most other enemies, including shopkeepers, the ghost and Quillback. It can also light up dark areas for a short time, though you should take care as snapping a lightning bug will weirdly enough count as picking it up, ruining your run. The main drawback of the camera is that you can't use it to kill Tiamat. I would therefore recommend swapping it out for a shotgun from one of Madame Tusk's guard on 6-3.

Turkeys: Turkeys are surprisingly good for this challenge, since they allow you to double jump and to float, making it much easier to jump over gold and avoid obstacles and enemies. If you find one in Volcana, consider taming it. Just watch out you don't run into any gold lying around.

Spectacles/Udjat eye: Both of these items allow you to see gems hidden in blocks, which makes it easier to bomb through areas while avoiding blowing up blocks containing money.

Hp: Since avoiding enemies is often easier than avoiding gold, hp has less of a priority than it would on a normal run. This does not mean that it is worthless, since you can of course still die if you take enough damage but it should be a lower priority if you manage to keep it above 4.

Common run killers

Explosives: Any explosion has the risk of breaking a nearby gold block, scattering tiny gold pieces all across the floor or launching gold and gems through the air. Explosions are mainly caused by your own bombs but can also be a consequence of interacting with certain enemies like UFO's and the robots in Volcana. Avoid setting off these enemies when possible.

Dark levels: Dark levels are always hard, as they make it very difficult so see enemies, traps and money. For this challenge however, they have the added danger of wall-mounted torches dropping gold when lit. This makes carrying torches around slightly more risky but still recommended for the most part, as you'll need to see where you're going and avoid stepping on gold. Note that if you go quickly, you can move through the wall-mounted torches without picking up the gold, just be careful on your way back. Also take care that torches can also be lit by other means, like magmars in volcana or flaming arrow traps, dropping gold without you noticing.

Vases: Unlike normal runs, where opening vases has a risk-reward trade-off, it is simply a double risk when going for this challenge. It can either spawn an enemy or a barely visible gold piece so try to avoid interacting with them when possible.

Quillback: While he himself is not too much of a threat, the blocks he breaks can scatter the ground with gems and tiny gold nuggets. Consider leading him away or killing him and carefully whipping the gold out of your path or taking the other way if it is less risky. Picking up his extra bombs and hp can be helpful but since it is possible that a gold nugget is hiding behind these items, you should be very careful in picking them up.

Olmec: Since this trophy does not requires you to get the Ankh, you can skip the second and third phase of the Olmec fight. This is highly recommended since Olmec has the tendency to crush a lot of gold blocks, scattering gold while you’re trying to dodge him. If you have enough bombs, try to lure Olmec to one side of the floor and bomb your way down to the Tide Pool, trying to avoid blowing up bombs with gold in them. If you don’t, make very sure Olmec crushes all gold pieces he creates or you’re very likely to step on them trying to avoid him.

Tide pool: Generally speaking, the Tide Pool is not the most difficult section of the game. It does however have the tendency to obscure gold bars and gems behind difficult to see through foliage that appears in this biome. Be very careful, try to whip in front of you when in doubt and try to avoid the ground in places with a lot of plants.

Tiamat: Making it to the last floor of the game might give you the feeling that the run is as good as won. It is not. Be extremely careful fighting her, since she can spawn UFO's, which are able to break the blocks around her, scattering the ground with gold without you even noticing. I failed to get this trophy 2 times because of this so don't underestimate her. Either break the blocks yourself and take cover for the falling gold or try to finish her as quickly as possible.
