I Know a Few Maneuvers

I Know a Few Maneuvers

Destroyed 10 starfighters while drifting in Dogfight.

How to unlock the I Know a Few Maneuvers achievement in STAR WARS: Squadrons - Definitive Guide

So let's start off with how to drift in the first place:

-First you have to transfer your power to the engines (left on Dpad) and you'll notice yellow bars that are filling up next to your speedometer.
-Then you'll push in the left thumbstick to boost
- While boosting, you look where you want to be facing with the right thumbstick, and then you push in and HOLD the left thumbstick in to drift. You'll come out of your boost and you'll drift for about 2-3 seconds.

What I did is I equipped seeker mines to my auxiliary and used an A wing/Tie interceptor. Bombers can work too but I had more luck with the more nimble interceptors. When you drop a seeker mine a icon will appear on the left side of your screen showing the status of the mine. When it's yellow, that indicates it's locked on to an enemy and moving to kill. About 3/4 of the time it'll be a kill if it hits. The goal is to hit a drift while the seeker mine kills the target. I can confirm that there are no bonus points or indicators that you got a "drift kill" so you'll just have to keep track on your own. I'd fly into groups of enemies chasing my allies in a circle (especially enemy interceptors) and drop a mine and immediately begin boosting. You'll more often then not have all of your yellow bars full and can just keep going until you see the icon turn yellow and then begin to drift. That's the best method I was able to come up with. Trying to pick out weak enemies and drift to get kill takes an incredible amount of aim and skill that I didn't possess but that's always an option.

This is only my second guide on the site so if you leave a dislike please let me know what I can do better or what you didn't like

SteveyK21 has a good update from since the patches. Copied from their comment below and from the PS Trophies site:
"I found this really difficult to do using this method. From a ps board i found a solution that worked for me. Use the support class ship with the first turret and seeker mines. Just drop them both and then do the drift a lot. I got it in a handful of dog fights doing this"

Wow, cool tip. Thank you. Hope I can do it.

Edit 1:

Edit 2:
Ha! I think I got a couple during that match. Very luck based. Thanks for the tip.

Is this obtainable on Fleet vs AI or campaign or strictly on dogfight or Fleet battles?

Does the achievement have tracking?

@archangel IX it must be obtained in Dogfight. Ranked and AI fleet battles don't count.

@Mr Evil 37 there is no tracker. You'll have to do your best to track yourself

@Osakamitsu it is pretty situational. Especially because the window really isn't that large. Try targeting interceptor class because the mines kill them in one hit. Everything else is two hits unless they're weak.

wowooooowow.... I just read that you said you cant do this in fleet. WELP. Theres my problem. lol.

UGH. even the achievement says dog fight. haha

It's all good. I got a bunch of other achievements I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Your guide is fantastic!! When I originally saw this achievement I didn’t think I was ever going to get this. I went for this today and got it a few hours later. It’s not hard but it does require a little bit of luck and good timing. Sometimes I would drift to early or to late but at least once in a match I would get the timing down. Thanks again!

I'm so thankful for this dude! I would have NEVER have been able to get this achievement if not for this method!

It is however incredibly annoying that it doesn't track! I've done what I feel like is over 20 of them - I just have no idea which ones count and therefore what I'm doing wrong etc!

@flatmex what I found is if you move forward at all then you're out of the drift. I always aimed for it to be right when I start the drift. Thats just what worked for me. I wish all of these tracked. Keep at it if you don't have it yet. Takes a lot of luck

Got it! I can confirm 100% that the guide method works! It took what felt like 50+ 'drift' kills to get, but it was most certainly down to my poor timing! I hope very much that they update the tracking for future players. Thanks so much @BulkGalaxy!

I’m sorry but the mine is definitely not a 100% sure fire way, as sometimes the mine goes off straight away ( 98% of my time it has) leaving you with no Drift time then you get mines that go yellow but don’t even hunt the starfighter just sit there then blow up. There must be a better way.

@Supergramps11 all I could say is that comes down to bad luck. I rarely had mine go off instantly. A lot of it just comes down to luck. If you do the seeker mine method I know you'll get it. The only other way would be timing the drift with missile kills or finding a weak target to kill with the main lasers which is possible but vastly more difficult. I hope someone finds a more surefire way to do this but I don't think there is one. I know you can get it!

@Flaymex I'm glad you got it man. When I was testing I didn't think it was working and it happened to pop. The window is just so tight it's hard to tell if the kill happens during the drift or if you just missed it

Finished mine today as well. Yavin seems to be the better level. Stick to your squad and do what Bulk said with the thumbstick. Felt like I did it like 100 times but I think I was microdrifting.

Thank you very much. So, you have to make sure its NOT a turn? But going straight voids the drift? Im sorry but I dont understand this part. I also usually start my drift WITH a turn.

Alright I finally got it. A mixture of seeker mines and missiles. I actually found the missiles to be much easier. Weaken them with laser, lock on and fire a missile and then drift and spin away and hope you get the kill.

I'm glad that it worked out. I for the life of me couldn't do the missiles try as I might. Maybe got one kill from that so you're a better shot than I am haha

Just a heads up -- you can also, if desired, change the input to simply double-tapping the stick, rather than holding it. I personally find that a whole lot easier.

I got this last night. You need to boost and keep you're analogue stick forward then whilst boosting aim where you want to go on the right analogue stick (this can be forward, backwards, left or right) then click and hold the boost button again whilst still pushing it forward and you'll start to drift. It'll feel like you're side swiping if you go left or right and you'll hear a type of "whooshing" sound when you're drifting. Keep doing this just before a kill and stop when the hit markers stop flashing. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy.

This was rough. One issue that I had was while getting plenty of kills with the mines the indicator that it had a target was too slow not giving me enough time to get into the drift before the kill.

I got into the habit of dropping the mine and just drifting back and forth until a kill or the mine died.

Firing a missile and then going into a drift was much more reliable as far as getting the kill during the drift but harder to set up.

Changing the setting on boosting to where you have to click the analog stick again helped tremendously. Default setting was super inconsistent. I was able to reliably hit a drift every time after changing it. Then its just grinding for the scenario to hit right in game.

Way easier to use missiles. I used quick lock missiles in the interceptor/awing. Go for other a wing interceptora because theyre weaker. Big open maps are easiest. Try and put a few sbot into them first to ensure a kill. You can watch the missile to the target most of the way to try and time the drift. Better than guessing and luck with the mines.

Definitely agree. I re-mapped it to left trigger and drifting was much easier.

If your using the support class method, it's a lot easier with the New Republic because there are less shielded ships facing you.

This guide worked for me. Thank you. I'd add that there is a faint red outline around the seeker mine's yellow 'locked-on' icon right before it detonates. Timing the drift for that moment seemed to make the achievement a little easier. Also, keep your opponent targeted the entire time and watch their health to time the drift. 'You can achieve your dreams. I'm living proof. Beefcake. Beefcake!'

Got his after 2-3 hours of using U-wing in the last tip in the guide. Use mines and first turret like guide says. Drift back and forth around turret. Deploy mine when being chased and try drifting. Thumbs up for the guide.

Edited comment : BulkGalaxy is correct......there is NO indicator as to when you make a successful drift kill.

Their advice here is completely sound. You just have to keep at it and persevere until the achievo pops.

I had been actively and solely trying for this achievo for about 6 hours until it popped.

I am making my way slowly towards getting this achievo (I think) and the only times (twice) that I have been confident of getting a kill whilst drifting has been when I was also awarded a “Fearless kill” award.

So maybe, Fearless kill indicates progress?

The game does track this, so why there is not a proper statistics screen that we can see I just do not know. This would help with knowing how many of the ‘1000 dogfight kills” are left to go too.

Can you elaborate on what counts a drifting. What I think is drifting may not be? I thought I had a TON of kills but the guy above mentioned micro drifting and I am wondering I am not doing it correctly.

By Osakamitsu on 10 Oct 2020 06:05
@osakamitsu I believe what counts as the drift is from the moment you start going sideways to the point your going forward again. You have to make sure it's not a turn and that you are continually moving in a straight line as you drift. Any forward motion voids ends the drift. I found my drifts that I was positive I got kills for was about a 2-3 seconds of drift. I think microdrifting is when you don't have a full boost or you do the input too quickly so the drift ends up as a sharp turn. You have to give time for the boost to go and then initiate the drift.

Just adding what worked for me.

Changed the boost button settings from "throttling down will deactivate boost" to just clicking the left analog stick again. I then used practice mode to try it out, I was able to hit drifts very consistently and easily this way.

Then I went to dogfight mode.

I used TIE interceptors and A wings since you can go so fast and get boost, you can do hit and run on dogfight snarls. The quick lock missile was much easier to setup.

TIES and Xwings are okay, but interceptors and Awings are usually very week and easy to kill. Id put a few shots in from 1000m if I could to knock them down and then fire a missile. Watching distance can let you time the drift. Boost after you fire and then hit the drift. Hopefully you get the kill. If not, rinse and repeat.

Esseles and Yavin were the best maps, then Dockyards, Sissubo and Galitan were the hardest since theres so much cover to evade locks and not enough room to boost a lot.

I kept track and I had what I thought were about 20ish drift kills before it popped, so its tough to know if it counted or not.

You will hear a woosh, and usually a voiceline from your pilot (at least the hotshot rebel when I was in the A wing) when in the drift. I was probably drifting a little late on my kills. Dont get sucked into turning dogfights. Hit and run, should be easy if youre moving fast (I also used the propulsion engine to up max speed).

You wont get a lot of kills focusing like this. But of you find a new, bad player that doesnt avoid well and flies straight lines FOCUS on them. Keep trying to find them and setup your scenario.

I had one match where I had 6-7 drift kill scenarios this way.

This achievement requires you to attain 10 kills while performing a drift with your starfighter in Dogfight matchmaking. Private matches do not count at time of writing.
The easiest method I have come across for this is equipping a mine and turret mine to the support class fighter, dropping them when near enemies and then just repeatedly drifting until the kills from your mines line up with you drifting, thus counting towards the achievement. This will obviously be somewhat luck based on if the mine/ turret kills line up with you drifting but is much simpler than trying to drift, line a shot and kill an enemy with your lasers while still drifting. Below is some additional information you may find useful.

Make sure to read up on the basics and practice the actual drift mechanic before attempting this achievement as it can be sometimes be tricky to pull off. If performed correctly ‘speed lines’ will be visible through your cockpit windshield as you rapidly turn in one direction and you should see your speedometer drop speed before regaining it automatically. That drop represents the drift. That’s when you need your kills.

The easiest method I found for this was using the Support Ship class in this case the New Republic U-Wing with ‘Seeker Mine’, ‘Turret Mine’, Fortified Deflector’, ‘Deflector Hull’ and ‘Propulsion Engine’ Equipped.
Deflector Hull and Fortified Deflector give your ship some extra durability as you attempt your drifts with Propulsion Engine allowing you to reach top speed faster. These are not atrictly required for drifting but if you’re an absolute rookiee like myself, a bit of extra survivability means everything.
When you spawn into a match, immediately dump all power into engines (this is the blue bar on your cockpit dashboard) this starts to build up boost thrusters. Fly into battle at normal speed and once you reach firing range of opponents, drop your mine and turret mine, firing them off as much as the recharge allows. Everytime you deploy your mines start performing drifts and eventually your mines and turrets will get kills for you and at some point these will likely coincide with you drifting. Repeat as much as required until the achievement pops.
It may take time to get everything to line up, but letting auto turrets and mines do the killing for you makes this achievement a lot easier as you just have to focus on landing a drift, rather than a drift, line up of a shot and kill while drifting. After a few matches I got this achievement and even for those kills that don’t occur while drifting that the turret/mines can get you, add towards your Dogfight kill achievements so that’s a nice bonus too.

BulkGalaxy's guide is great, though I suspect that there was a stealth nerf to the seeker mines. The indicator for when a mine is tracking lags now, so in my experience you can no longer use it to tell when to start drifting.

I've found that jousting can be a useful tactic. Head straight at an enemy unloading lasers to weaken it, drop a mine with enough time for it to arm and then peel away to immediately start drifting. The enemy will head straight into the mine for the kill. I got my last three that way.

Missiles are OK, but players are much better at evading now so more often than not you'll just get a little damage and, because you've started drifting, lost the target...very frustrating. And I've never gotten single kill with cluster-missiles.

Happy hunting!

This Is Cumulative.
- When The Achievement Popped, I Had Killed One Guy For The Current Match.
-------------------------------
Set Up
-------------------------------
I Used The Support Ship. I Do Not Remember The Name Of It, But It's Big And Slow.
- Equip Mines
- Equip Auto-Turrets

The Game Counts Drifting While These Kill, As Drifting Kills.
-------------------------------
In-Game
-------------------------------
Always Start By Switching To Engines (1 On Keyboard) To Build Your Boost Meter.

Space Bar To Boost, And While Boosting - Press Left Shift To Start Drifting.
- This Is Great For 180° Turning, Boosting To An Asteroid Then Turning Behind It, Or Just Useful For Slowing Down.

Take Turns Placing Turrets And Mines, Then Boosting And Drifting Around While They Go Off.
- With Your Auto-Turrets Placed It's Just A Matter Of Being Lucky Enough To Be Drifting At The Correct Times To Get Credit.
----------------------------
There Is No Tracker For The Number Of Kills You Have, But The Achievement Pops Mid-Match Right After You Get Your Tenth One.

Good Luck!

If we boost 5v5, then we modify the 4th ship for each side. by installing an auto turret on it (attacks opponents automatically). Next we do the following:

1. As soon as the battle begins, we fly up to the middle of the map and place a turret.
2. Only one opponent should fly up from the opposite team.
3. While he is flying, you put a mark on him to track his life.
4. As soon as his life reaches 10%, start accelerating and drift.
When turning, you should see a Kill +100 notification in the middle of the screen

There is a drift tutorial at the end of the 3rd story mission. They directly show in detail when and what to press. You can also start a training session in a network game (without detailed instructions, just for yourself) to improve your drifting skills.

How to drift (if settings are default):
1. Press left to transfer all the power to the engines. Your afterburner will begin to build up (the location of the afterburner is different for everyone, but it always looks like light yellow and is located not far from the speed indicator). Example:

2. Increase speed up.
3. Click to activate afterburner.
4. Select the direction to the right where we will turn 360 and HOLD!
5. Click again on and HOLD!

These actions from 1-5 take 5-7 seconds. At the moment of drift, IT IS IMPORTANT TO HOLD And . Otherwise, the drift is not counted. Drifting will be carried out while there is afterburner.

How to understand that drift has started , since there are no notifications.
When you do this, your central crosshair will move strongly towards the edge of the screen. That is, if you HOLD to the left, then the sight will move to the right and vice versa if you HOLD to the right, the sight will move to the left.

I remind you that these actions are performed with DEFAULT settings!

If you still do it online with randoms, I recommend the following method.

We are modifying the 4th ship of each faction.
1. We install auto-guided lasers (just in case, to beat up the enemy fighter).
2. Additional weapons: auto turret and bloodhound mine.
3. Shields unchanged.
4. We increase maneuverability.

In general, it all depends on the teams you play with. But the general rules are as follows.
At the beginning of the battle, we shoot a turret and a mine in the middle of the map (after respawning, depending on the circumstances).
If a mine or turret turns yellow, it means it is attacking the enemy. If possible, mark this enemy with to see his life. And when he has only 10% of his lives left, then perform a drift (how to do it is described in detail in my tip above).
But it often happens that you don’t see the enemy’s life because of the chaos of what’s happening, so you simply focus on the color of the turret or mine and drift more often while they are yellow.

If you are destroyed, then after respawning, select the damaged enemy and shoot the turret and mines next to it.

Sometimes you can sit on the tail of a damaged opponent and destroy him.

Assisting on a kill does not count as a kill in drifting.

I got the trophy this way. This method is more difficult than boost.
