How to unlock the Fector's Challenge achievement in Stardew Valley - Definitive Guide
13/02/21 Edit
With version 1.5 this achievement should be a comparative breeze now as you can save after each level. Finishing a single level without a death and with enough coins for the power ups was never hard, the issue was stringing them all together in one run.
Simply save in the Prairie King game after you have completed a level with enough coins and no deaths, quit out and rest in your bed to move to the next day and trigger an autosave, then continue where you left of on Prairie King. If you die or don't get enough coins quit the game / dashboard without saving and reload at the start of the day again.
I'm leaving the below as a detailed guide of where you should be after each level.
Original Guide
This achievement is a bit of a nightmare, but it is not impossible. With a bit of practice you should be able to reliably make it to levels 2-3 and then 3-3 without dying (these are the main pain points where you risk ending a run).
From that point on it's just a matter of being lucky with coins, power-ups (particularly on those maps) and Fector. You'll find you can beat every map without dying if they are taken in isolation, it's just stringing those together. More a test of perserverance and luck than just pure skill.
The outlaws and Fector both can be beaten easily with the right tactics as detailed below and should be less of an impediment to this achievement.
In game luck (as noted on the television) does not impact on coin/power-up drops. (I still like to play on high luck days though, for the psychological boost!) However you will have varying luck each run and will need to be lucky with both coins (especially 5 coin drops) and power-ups coming at the right time.
Purchases during the run
Ideally you will end your run with one boots upgrade (speed), two gun upgrades (fire rate) and two ammo upgrades (damage per shot). It is possible to succeed with only the one fire rate upgrade though.
This outlines a typical run. If you get exceedingly lucky with 5 coin drops though you may be able to get ahead of this.
• After 1-2 you want to be purchasing the ammo box (15), purchase the gun (10) if not. If you can afford neither quit and start again.
• After 1-4 you should purchase the other upgrade. Again, quit if you don't have both. (It's easier to restart here than finding you don't have enough coins later)
• After 2-1 you likely won’t have enough for either the gun (20) or ammo (30). Purchase if you do. Skip the boots.
• After 2-3 Purchase the 2nd ammo upgrade (30). If you don’t have enough for this world 3 will be impossible, this is why we skipped the boots in 2-1.
• After 3-1 Purchase the second gun upgrade (20) if you are able to (unlikely). If not purchase the boots. If very low on coins consider skipping the boots. (Makes Fector Method #3 impossible)
• After 3-3 Purchase either the boots (8) or second gun upgrade (20) (depending on your 3-1 choice) if you can afford it.
Ideal Run
To give you an Idea of an almost ideal run with drops, see below. This was the total number of coins dropped, I wasn't able to collect 6 of them so still had more than enough for all standard upgrades. (83 coins). As long as you are getting enough coins for Ammo2 by world three, a good number of pwer-ups is what you should be hoping for in a run.
Note: This was also a high enemy number run, the power-up drops more than make up for this. You actually want a lot of enemies in a run with a good power-up drop rate. (Given any of the gun power ups make you almost invincible, and help clear Mummies in world 3).
On a Run like this (due to the Power ups) it's much easier to make it through. I died stupidly on 3-1 on the below run, otherwise sailed through no problem and would have had the achievement.

Total Coins: 98. I've had runs with well over 100 though.
Below is a video of why you need ammo 2 for 3-3. This was a near perfect run, I just didn't get the coins for Ammo2 by the end of 2-3 or even 3-1. It's possible to get through 3-2 without it, but 3-3 is then next to impossible.

2-3 Tips
• Try and stick to the middle, just off to the left and right (not directly above a bridge) and clear the fast enemies from the left and right. The bridges will slow/block other enemies from the top and bottom.
• Alternatively you can try camping in a corner just away from the wall. You have even fewer avenues to cover, but need quick reactions against the Moths when the spawn. I have less success with this method but some who have the achievement have used it. (Thanks to UnfurledEmu75 in the comments)
• You'll need to move between bridges to collect power ups /coins and prevent being swarmed. Again, try and use the bridges as a block and not stand in front of spawns due to the fast enemies. Shooting into the spawns when moving here can help save some deaths.
• Don't be afraid to use your power ups. You will need them to survive at some point, and should try and conserve them, but better to use them and risk not getting a replacement than dying for sure.
3-3 Tips
• There are a lot of enemies here, but this can be an advatage. The flying enemies are blocked by the mummies so you can use the horde as a buffer and focus on one/two corners.
• Swarms of flying enemies will come (particluarly with about 25% left to go). Try and keep a power-up for these, it's extremely hard to survive otherwise.
• Because of this you'll be a bit luck dependant on getting a machine gun or sheriff star for Fector after the 25% point as few enemies will remain and you will have likely burned your banked power up.
• Use nukes! You now use these if you know you have enough coins for your final purchase, you can stop worrying about coins.
• Avoid the sides as much as you can as the flying enemies spawn all over the edge.
Easy Boss kills.
Outlaws
For the Outlaws simply hide behind your cover and pop out to fire off some rounds to get them moving, then hide again. Wait until they stop moving to the left or right and shoot them diagonally. This is a safe, easy method to never die on these guys.
Fector Method 1
If you have a Sherrif Star or Machine gun going in, and ammo upgrade 2, this is the easiest option. He will fire directly up at the start so simply position yourself in the center, activate the power-up and shoot directly down. He will be dead before he can unleash his tracking/random shots.
See this Video at 19:20 for an example.
(note, not my own, I just found it useful and have linked it, credit to the owner)
Fector Method 2
If you don’t have the upgrades, start the same way. To then avoid his fire simply move quickly left and right and his shots will always go wild. Getting this method down should see you able to defeat him regularly without dying, consider fighting on to face him even on a run that you die on to practice.
See this video at 21:20 for an example:
https://www.twitch.tv/videogamequest/v/56872746
(note, not my own, I just found it useful and have linked it, credit to the owner)
Fector Method 3
The standard method most use, and the most difficult. You will need at least 1 boots (speed) upgrade. Move to the far left/right corner and dodge his shots. It will take a lot of practice/timing. As he begins to spawn more enemies he will shoot less so the later stages of the fight will be easier.
*Update* After further attempts this is now my preferred method when I get to Fector with no Power-ups as it's more reliable. I'd advise practising it if you die earlier in the run. Don't look at Fector, look only at the bullets and focus on dodging them. Move back and forth so there is a wide spread. I find the fast ones are easy to dodge, you have to take care on the slow ones that get fired down the middle.
After 5-10 times otrying this you should get the knack of avoiding them down. I'm terrible at bullet hell games but now can beat him about 50% of the time with no deaths this way. As of yet none of those have been on runs with no deaths previously just.
See 19:10 in this video for an example:
(note, not my own, I just found it useful and have linked it, credit to the owner)
General Tips
• Coins and power ups are random, not affected by luck. You'll need a lucky run to get enough to get through.
• All the bosses can be easily beaten with no damage when used to them. It's levels 2-3 and 3-3 that will wipe you.
• Try and hold the centre, it gives you the most room to move and react and in later levels flying enemies can spawn at the edge.
• Save your power ups for when you are in danger, don't just use them to clear the room.
• When you are 'safe' collect power ups only when they are flashing if you can to maximise the time. That few seconds extra may just see you through a tight spot.
• Try and kill enemies a little out from the middle so you can get their coins/power ups, it's no worth trying to get those in their spawn zone as it can end a run needlessly.
• Don't use the nuke, it leaves enemies dropping no coins. (can be useful for 3-3 if you have enough coins by then though). It also glitches the bosses.
• Enemies move slower diagonally, use this to your advantage.
• Flying enemies can be blocked by others. This is most useful on 3-3 when you can use the mummy horde and a block to focus on the flying enemies that can reach you.
How long will it take?
As I noted initally I wouldn't say skill is going to be a big factor in this, the 5 hours noted are how long (estimated) it takes with the game until you are able to start having regular runs where no deaths is a possibility. Once you are there it's down to luck somewhat.
I'd also preface the below by noting I condsider myself terrible at dual stick shooters, so anyone can get it!
Haven spoken to a few of us who have this achievement it may take 5-20 hours to obtain.
I personally was at the upper end of this range. I had reached Fector 6 times without dying before i managed to beat him. The final time I had a Sherriff Star on him and used Method #1. Before that I had gotten him down to a few hits using Method #3. (One hit left in one case, after about 7 hours of play so I could have done it much earlier). All 5 previous attempts I had no power-up but came close. I had also died once in earlier levels a few times and beaten him without dying using method 2/3 when practising.
The biggest factors on time were 2-3 and 3-3 ending a run (as noted above) and getting lucky on 3-3 so you have a Machine Gun or Sherriff Star for Fector enabling you to use Method #1. Had my only run with this come on the first of my runs I would have been closer to the 5 hour Mark.

I was finally able to this achievement. I got this with the beating the Prairie King achievement. When I made it to the next arena without dying, I pressed select to quit the game and continue on my day.
I also completed this after I bought the Key To The Town from Qi's Walnut Room on Ginger Island. I would wake up and go to the saloon first thing in the morning around 6:30 AM and play the level. If I completed the level without dying, I would go to the next area and then exit it until tomorrow. If I died, I would Exit To Title and attempt it again.
I was able to beat the game with one gun upgrade and two ammo power upgrades. https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Journey_of_the_Prairie_King is a good article about this game. All the bosses were a joke, especially the final one.

Massive congratulations! Thanks UnfurledEm75, pretty much in line with my own experience.
1-4 I've used the corners before, but found the middle easier if you have ammo 1 upgrade. Idfeinitely think either option is viable though. I also tend to stay in the upper left on 1-3 and shoot diagnonally into the middle and left entrances as well as the gap between the barriers.
I have tried the top left corner in 2-3 before, and it's where I run to in a pinch, how do you avoid getting killed by the spawning Moths though if you spend all your time there? It's definitely easier to camp there aside from them. When you say not arrested to the wall, do you mean sort of hal way between the wall and the entrance rather than right in the corner?
Generally I've sat off to the left of the middle, as you aren't right above the middle bridges you only really need to look right and left most of the time, and can't be insta-killed by moths.
Anyway, glad another got it! Been to Fector twice now with no pwer-ups and died. Definitely doable, just takes patience! I think I'm about 10 hours of gametime in, hoping it doesn't take me 30.

With the addition of Update 1.5 this achievement has become much easier.
Update 1.5 has added in the ability for you to save and quit the “Journey Of The Prairie King”. This makes getting the achievement much easier with the ability to abuse this mechanic.
*Journey Of The Prairie King = JOTPK
EDIT: Thanks to RealistIdealist’s comment he can confirm you do not need to dashboard per my below comments, but just quit to the title screen instead.
I wanted to state first I would strongly recommend at least beating (doesn’t matter if you die) the JOTPK once either with this mechanic or not so you will have a version of it at your house via the mail as a reward for beating it. Since this method might have you starting and quitting quite a bit you might not want to have to wait all the way until 12:30 pm each time you attempt this to access the JOTPK in the bar.
So here’s the cool part. After each level you do, you will be able to press the button which will store the data of all of the coins and the ability you have stored from the previous level. It is key you move to the next level (screen) otherwise when you press back it will just reset that previous level. You can then select the JOTPK again and jump right back into where you left off by pressing the “Continue” option.
With this in mind we can abuse the save option to allow you to attempt a difficult stage numerous times until you get lucky drops that make it a breeze.
What you want to do is whenever you finish a level or stage (this is up to you on where you want to save or not, but I did it every level) you want to back out and go to bed to pass to the next day. This then sets an autosave in motion for your overall game (not just the JOTPK). You now can go back to the JOTPK as usual and play it, but if you happen to die you can go to the dashboard and force quit Stardew Valley. When you start the game again and load into your save file you will be exactly where the autosave kicked in and the game will pretend you never just died in the JOTPK.
Thus, making this much easier then having to do it in one sitting. I would still recommend following typical guidelines of making sure you get Bullet Upgrade 1 and Gun Upgrade 1 in Stage 1, Bullet Upgrade 2 in Stage 2, and Gun Upgrade in Stage 2 or Stage 3. I didn’t get Gun Upgrade 2 until Stage 3 Level 3 and still was able to get through the JOTPK fine with this method. I would strongly recommend, however, going into the last level of Stage 3 with either the Heavy Machine Gun powerup (fast fire rate) or Sheriff Badge powerup (best in the game) to make the last boss easier.
If anyone has any specific questions or input just let me know.
I hope this helps make a frustrating achievement a little less frustrating!

Chiming in also saying took me 2 hours from start to finish doing this achievement using the save method. Had to restart only once as got screwed with upgrades and couldn't beat 3-1. Just wanted to note that a lot of the minigame is luck based. Some stages will help you a lot when they drop a ton of pickups. I did 3-3 second try as I got about 5 pickups in a row. If you feel like you're not making any progress, you will eventually as you will receive those lucky drops eventually. I had 2 ammo upgrades and 1 gun upgrade by the time I reached 3-2 so you don't necessarily need that second gun upgrade. I would say the second ammo upgrade is actually more effective.

(Posting this on both solutions so people see it)
Sharing my two cents.
Getting the cabinet in your house, a reward for beating the game at all, is a must for trying the no-death achievement.
I saved a Bandolier(vest of ammo icon for rapid fire) on my character the whole time, saving it for Fector. I had two ammo and three gun upgrades because of good coin drops and triggering the Bandolier when he returned to the center and shooting diagonally killed Fector really quick.
Something I did want to point out, though, is that I DIED at Fector, used the Select/Back/whatever button to exit out and I accidentally hopped back into the game. When I did, I still had the amount of lives I had before I had died AND it saved me at Fector so I didn't have to replay 3-3. I actually wound up dying again, so I did the same thing (reloading without returning to the menu, again making sure I had the lives I had before death), and on my third attempt I killed Fector and still got the achievement for doing so without dying.
So I'm not sure what the saving of the game actually saves, but even if you die you may not have to dashboard or quit to menu. That needs more testing to confirm it, though. If you hop back in the game and have the same lives you did before, you should still be able to get the no-death achievement.

The only way I was able to get this trophy was to sleep to save my game after every chapter - leaving the mini game after you pass a level will let you come back to where you left off each time. So if I died, I'd quit without saving so I wouldn't lose any progress. I continued saving each chapter/level until I finally eventually got the achievement!

I’ll give you a couple of obvious and not so obvious tips that have helped me personally.
1. Try to take a diagonal position relative to large groups of enemies (and not only). Firstly, because all enemies except those flying diagonally move a little slower, and secondly, because everyone tries to occupy a diagonal line, interfere with each other and it is very easy to shoot them. In some situations, you can kill a huge number of enemies without power-ups just by standing in a corner, as long as the timer runs out and someone doesn’t fly out of that corner. The most convenient positions at some levels are also associated with this:
2. The most important upgrades are for damage, then rate of fire, boots are not particularly useful, it is very important to take at least the first level of damage on the second world to kill mushrooms with 1 shot, and the second level on the third world to kill mummies with two and imps from one. Up to the last level, a lot depends on upgrades; at the last level, unfortunately, only good drops can save you.
3. Nuclear missile (destroys all enemies) does not provide drops from enemies, so it is not recommended to use it until the last world
4. Don’t be afraid to use items and don’t try to pull out all situations on the skill! Even if there is nothing useful on the map, but you feel that you are surrounded, use everything to survive. There is a very high probability that something will fall out, and even if not, as a rule, enemies will attack in waves and there will be a short respite. In any case, it is much more offensive to die with a sheriff's badge in your pocket than to die empty. Almost all power-ups except coffee can get you out of a hopeless situation, but a smoke bomb can play a cruel trick on you if it teleports you to the wrong place.
5. The cowboy boss has an area at the very edge of the cover, where he can be shot without receiving return shots (a couple of leftmost pixels of the boss’s cover). But only if the boss stops. If the boss makes a wide strafe, immediately hide. The last boss can be easily killed if you still have a speed-of-fire amplifier left (machine gun or sheriff's badge), you can watch the video on YouTube.
The trophy is very difficult, but with favorable randomness it is quite easy to achieve.

Let's rejoice! Anyone for whom this trophy caused a panic attack can exhale. In update 1.5, getting it has become several times easier. The first and most important change is that the gaming machine now remembers your progress and allows you to continue the adventure from the location where you left off.
And now I will describe how I received this trophy. It took about 1.5 hours.
I made ginger ale with Ki seasoning - thereby getting +2 luck.
I went into the device and started going through levels 1.1-1.4. Here the main goal (besides not dying) was to improve the pistol (10 coins) and buy ammunition (15 coins). If you didn’t do this for the first boss, then it’s better to restart.
I upgraded my pistol, bought some ammunition, and killed the first boss. Satisfied with myself!
As soon as level 2.1 starts, press exit. The device will remember your progress, you can check it by clicking Continue adventure. I go to bed (in the game, not in reality).
I start the next day with ginger ale (it’s difficult to get this trophy without 100 grams). And I continue the adventure. I pass levels 2.1-2.4, again without dying, I kill the boss. If you suddenly die, then go to the main menu and boot. He put all the collected coins into cartridges. We repeat until we reach 3.1.
At level 3.1, we again leave the device and run to bed. Play is play, and sleep is on schedule.
We wake up, hangover with ginger ale and continue the adventure again. We go through levels 3.1-3.4 according to the already familiar scheme: download ammo, if you die, restart the game through the main menu. At these levels, it is advisable to bring a machine gun or sheriff to the boss, then Fector will die in a few seconds, but I completed it without them.
Congratulations, you have reached Fector! Here it is - the worst dream of all trophy hunters. There is an advantage in the final battle. Perhaps this is a bug, or perhaps this is intentional. If suddenly Fector kills you, then immediately press exit and Continue the adventure. The final battle will start over again, but the number of lives will not change. In other words, the game will not count death. Repeat this until you remember the attack parities. We kill Fector, screensaver, the trophy is yours.
Let's pour ourselves some ginger ale (or something stronger) to celebrate such a difficult victory.
PS Honor and praise to those rebels who were able to complete this trophy honestly, without simplification. I can’t even imagine how much time and effort was spent. I take my hat off to you!

It is also worth saving the candy for this trophy, which will be given for all items in the museum, it gives +5 luck.
This will make the passage easier, since you will almost always receive some kind of bonuses at the level.
Also, this candy can be bought from a money changer in the desert for 3 rainbow shards (there is only one piece available, but after some time it appears again. Either after a couple of weeks, or in the new season), they (shards) can be obtained from mysterious stones in the mine at levels 100-120, or farm the skulls in the cave, taking with you a bunch of bombs that are bought from the dwarf in cave 5 on ginger island.
If it’s really hard to go through scheme 1.1-1.4 in one day, then you can go through one level a day, save and continue.
In order not to wait until 12:00 when the saloon opens, you can buy the key to the city from Mr. Key for 20 units of his currency.
Plus, each of the bosses has a save feature. If you press exit immediately after death and continue the game again, you will start the boss level again without losing lives, I died on the boss of the second level, left and came back, completed the game to the end and they gave me the trophy.
