How to unlock the Others and Wights achievement in State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition - Definitive Guide

The fastest ways I've found to kill zombies are fairly obvious - run them over with a sturdy car and antagonize plague hearts (although this is very dangerous). Right at the top, know that kills your followers get do not count, nor do friends kills count in co-op. (EDIT: Since this isn't clear, this is cumulative over all playthroughs you have in State of Decay 2.)

Running them over
Running them over is the safest bet, but it takes more work. The best way I found would be to have the auto lot in a large slot on your base, upgrade a medium size car and then mowing them down as you have tons of repair kits and fuel canisters. As ProfessorX 86 said, make sure to keep slamming on the horn or have the sirens rolling (on an ambulance or police car) to get zombies around you to come in. If you upgrade vehicles with sirens, however, the siren is removed (Thanks Luna go sky and AES0P). It has also been mentioned in the comments (thanks again AES0P) that the Auto Shop has an ability to reduce car damage for an hour.

EDIT: In addition to this, Pulzy 21 brought up some good points I forgot to mention about the car idea. You want to make sure that you have a steady stream of parts and materials for this. Parts help you make repair kits with a fully upgraded workshop. These are the key to the car idea (gas cans are easier to get than repair kits in the wild). Ideally, a base would have a workshop or a forge, and an auto shop as a base to make sure you get the most out of the car idea. Breaking down materials rucksacks also net you 30+ parts a shot and I've noticed that seems to be the better bet when your base is already at 30+ materials and you just need parts fast. There is also a slight chance that breaking apart the rucksack will net you a repair kit. Good luck!

EDIT: Zarda1 had a good idea for those without sirens - remap the horn to a button that is easier for you to hold down. The accessories app on Xbox should allow you to remap. Also, for those with an Elite controller, I'd advise putting it to a paddle.

DLC CONTENT EDIT: With the introduction of the Independence Day Pack, I thought I'd mention that the three new vehicles - Pyrohawk (a hatchback that shoots off fireworks), the Burninator (a truck with side-mounted flamethrowers), and the Meatwagon (a cargo van that drops delicious red meat) will all greatly help kill and attract zombies. The pack is free for this with the Ultimate Edition, but $4.99 USD otherwise.

SECOND CONTENT EDIT: Dr Scruffleton is reporting that the Church on The Hill base available on the hills map (Cascade Hills) has a bell tower that constantly attracts zombies to your base. Driving around blaring the horn is apparently a nice way to attract zombies to your location at the base. Whitney field Base in Meagher Valley has the same effect (thanks AES0P for the hyper passive-aggressive comment).

DLC Update - Daybreak: User Skeletaidonut had this to say about Daybreak: "For anyone reading this the Daybreak DLC counts towards total killed and if you complete all 7 waves you can get upwards of 700 kills a match."

PERSONAL EDIT: I was able to kill 3.9k zombies in 4 hours and 25 minutes. So, it is possible to kill that many zombies in an hour, but I also have a follower with the "Driver" trait that gives 100% fuel efficiency and 30% impact reduction. Highly recommend finding that trait if possible and having an auto shop roll the 30% impact reduction as well.

Feel free to comment with ways to improve the solution.

FINAL EDIT: As more DLC's come out, be sure to check the comments as the most up to date information could be in there. In general, this achievement is best won via running over zombies in any of the modes. Horde mode gives you more chances, but you can naturally get this in your playthrough. Before any of the DLC's, as my edit mentions, this only took a few hours at most so it can only be faster now.

@Dr Scruffleton I've finished this achievement and 1000 in an hour driving around seems pretty optimistic from my experience. Also as you've noticed the plague hearts don't constantly spawn zombies, they spawn them based on the damage done to them. I went in with the 50 cal Timberwolf and shot it twice to antagonize it hoping zombies would keep spawning, it would only spawn 20-30 zombies and then it stopped for me. The only benefit I can see to the plague hearts would be leaving them and all infections untouched, then circle the map in your vehicle to try and let the hordes pile up around each while your making laps. Another thing I noticed but haven't tested (and not going to bother testing now) is that there are at least 2 bases that have a unique facility that can call in zombies. The Church on the Hill in Cascade Hills has the church bell and Whitney Field in Meagher Valley has the announcer box which can both be used to call in hordes of zombies, in case anyone wants to test those and report back for others.

Also Dislodged Puma, you may want to add to the solution that the auto shop also has an option to decrease damage to vehicles for an hour, which can be useful if your using the driving method.

Ultimate edition DLC has an amazing car for this! I recommend starting a new community, with the builder and trader boons, which you should have already, because there's no reason going for this achievement if you don't have all others.

so, to clarify:

Make a new community
Select Trader and Builder boon
Fill 2 characters from previous communities if you want.
Make sure you reroll a random survivor until you get the Driver skill. This will greatly reduce the amount of fuel and repair kits that you will use. (autoshop adds another 30% that stacks)
Call in the ultimate edition vehicle if you have it, costs 400, but you start the new community with 4000 because of the selected boons.
Go ham and run over everything.
I also personally recommend your base as the football court in Meagher Valley, as you have good base defenses here and can attract a lot of zombies. And what fun is a zombies game if you keep them all away from your base right?

I commented this because I didn't feel these couple tips are worthy of a separate solution. Feel free to add to Dislodged Puma's solution if you find anything useful

answered my question of "does the total continue across all campaigns," 10,000 in one would have been insane, and would seem unlikely, but... anyone who has played Gears of War knows that these achievements can get insane and at a value of 2,922, I was a little worried. We can always play more campaigns or help out in other people's worlds and we will probably have more opportunities to kill Zombies when the DLC comes out.

@Sashamorning, do you mean kills your followers get on zombies? If so, no. They do not seem to count. Haven't tested it intensively, though, so maybe certain kills do count.

Usually slamming the horn in a car long enough will attract enough zombies to bring in at the very least two hordes. Just rinse and repeat going forward and reverse while also having repair kits and fuel. It's grindy however and probably better to be done while watching Netflix or while listening to a podcast or something.

i completed two runs, one at 15 days and the other at 7 days, and i only have 3750 kills. this achievement is completely reliant on grinding or the DLC to come. 4 playthrus doesn't even get you 10K in kills

@Dr Scruffleton, the achievement isn't remotely as difficult as people make it out to be. If you play the game the way it was intended, it isn't going to be that grindy. It certainly was an achievement aimed at people playing campaigns longer than the bare minimum to complete legacies, which isn't Undead Labs' fault for people wanting to rush the game. If I wasn't so damn busy with work all of a sudden, it'd only take me 2-3 hours of grinding at this point with a car to get the last 3.5k zombies or so. If you rush it and have like 8k zombies left, sure, it'll be a bitch. But just take your time and enjoy the game.

By death metal jay on 30 May 2018 17:07
I think it requires context. The achievement is to kill zombies. There doesn't have to be a qualifier if I've spent my time killing exactly 10,000 for the achievement or simply 9,999. If you downvote for an achievement where I give two viable options to kill zombies with updated options as the days go along just because I didn't kill exactly 10,000 zombies yet because of real life commitments, I don't really know how to help.

If this was an achievement that required knowing a certain path or skillset, sure, but it's just killing a zombie over and over again.

By Dislodged Puma on 30 May 2018 18:14
I mean, actually it's not so much the grinding you have to do, you can easily kill around 1000 zombies in less than an hour with a vehicle with a siren. the problem is the amount of gasoline and repair tool kits you need, as well as not being in end game (kill all the plague hearts)

By Enluna on 31 May 2018 01:50
how do you get more zombies to spawn around plague hearts? I drove up to one, have my siren going, 3 plague zombies spawned. I ran them over and have been sitting here for 5 minutes and no more spawned. I ran inside and 2 spawned. I killed them, now no more spawning 10 minutes later
0
0
By Dr Scruffleton on 31 May 2018 03:11
You need to do some damage on plaque heart, then they start spawning. Whack it down to near death and you should have plenty of zombies to to spawn, constantly.
0
0
By Pystynen on 31 May 2018 04:57
this is definitely not working for me, so that might be why you are getting downvoted Puma. Im literally standing at the plague heart bashing it with a hammer and no enemies are spawning. I killed maybe 50, they spawned 2 at a time maybe every 2-3 minutes after I hurt the heart a bit. No matter how much damage I did to the heart, they just spawned in 2's every few minutes. Not worth the time, gas, or repair kits for that kind of gain for me. I was in an ambulance with the siren on nonstop. Repeated this till I hit it so much it died. It was certainly not an instance of them spawning "constantly" for me. I imagined it just spawning hordes the whole time, as someone said you could easily get 1,000 in an hour. Nowhere near the case for me

By Dr Scruffleton on 31 May 2018 06:56
I updated the solution about the plague hearts. Sorry for the confusion on that aspect. I just wanted to make it clear that if you choose to not just rapid fire the plague hearts, you could optimize the number of zombies you kill in a single playthrough. That method is not the fastest way, but it is a way to get extra zombie kills should you choose to just do a playthrough normally.

@Dr Scruffleton, thanks for the info! I actually am on the map, so I may take you up on your research and move there for my car killing machine with an auto shop. Too bad the base is pretty ass for features and will be difficult to self-sustain. Also, I found a cop car on this map at the top of the map near the northernmost cell tower. Just on the other side of that river and I found an ambulance in the town area with Police Station (which could have another cop car).

Just wanted to add that riding a car as a passenger doesn't count towards the achievement. I sat in the car with my friend driving in her world and the achievement tracker didn't even flinch. Stepped out, whacked a few zombies and it started slowly going up.
This sucks, as maybe we could grind this achievement with friends instead of driving around watching crap on Netflix.

The ultimate edition vehicle is a good option if you dont actually want to play the game anymore like me. If you have the legacy for the trader, you can start the game with 4,000 influence. That vehicle costs 400 influence to spawn and its an upgraded vehicle. It doesnt break easily. Ive been using that on a new file where I dont care about the community I have at all, I think they all already died or left. Getting fuel is really the only issues. Sometimes they spawn with gas and toolkits in the trunk though, so always check. Ive just been driving around the map on this new save file. I think I have around 1500 kills to go.

There's a driver specialization? I don't think I've seen that.

Something I noticed was that the tracker seems to be wonky. It barely moved, then all of a sudden it jumped 3%. Anyone else notice this?

Re: Whitney Field... I'm having annoying time building up my crew to get the announcer box running. 3500 influence (I started with Trader, but still), 8 followers, and then it has to be powered. I think the church might be a better idea.

Alternatively, suggestions on a starting character build to get the auto shop working the fastest? I'm to the point where the only thing I care about is zombie slaughter, not survival.

I find it best to not kill any hearts. I have a drive perk on one of the characters I brought over to playthrough 2 along with auto mechanic and Computer persons. I grabbed the police car and go between the 2 hearts with a few infestations houses in between. When they stop spawning, I exit the game and reload. I still have no idea how someone can get 1000 in an hour. I put a trader as a leader do and I can by fuel and materials whenever I need it.

@BegFourMercy, I was skeptical as well, but I very much dislike the idea of sticking between one set area. I drove around the entire map over and over again hitting choke points. I never found it useful to stay in one location or bounce between just two places, even if there are infestations or plague hearts in those areas.

@Trekwars Q, it dropped because it's not a hard achievement. There is no difficulty to this beyond just patience. Only actually difficult achievements maintain their TA value. That being said, it's also only worth 40 gamerscore. That immediately makes it hard to retain value.

Is the cars random that spawn for each map? As I can't find police car or ambulance to make the kills abit faster? As the church bell only attracts handful of zombies to the base and has a cool down of 30 mins

Wow, that does suck. Sorry man. Siren is just a QoL thing, to be honest. If you can't find one, honking the horn does the same thing just is more annoying to press over and over again honestly. But, assuming you aren't using the siren, that means you can use an upgraded car which should be more sturdy in the long run. So there are benefits on both sides.

@Dislodged Puma. By exiting and starting the game, that makes the enemies respawn. So I just go between the 2. Up to 8100. Getting close. 10 pct a day is my goal.

For a reference point, I hit 93% just playing through normally for all four legacies (and one aborted attempt at about day four) without specifically going out of my way looking for kills.

As for vehicles, if you can't find a siren equipped ride go for beef and upgrade any van (Cargo, Passenger, Repair or Ambulance) into a Vandito. Thing takes a huge amount of abuse as long as you're not trying to ram Juggernauts.

Great guide! 👍 Although it’s grindy and I’ve rushed my last couple of legacies I’m looking forward to starting a new community and playing properly to gain this achievement! By Juicy Plumbs on 09 Jun 2018 12:58
@Hirsute Dave, that's exactly why I put at the bottom there that the achievement isn't difficult if you play the game haha. As for vehicles, I disagree with the Vandito over the medium cars just because I liked speed over durability, especially if you have a steady stream of repair kits. The way I figured was that the faster I could go, the more I could do. But that decision was probably made in conjunction with the fact that I had a survivor with the Driver trait.

So far, for me at least, the most annoying part of this achievement is when it seems like I'm not making any progress because I'll go ten to twenty seconds without seeing a single zombie, but then I smash through a horde or two of five to fifteen zombies. About a thousand an hour seems to be my average, at least going by my limited numbers. Sometimes I'll kill as many as thirty a minute, other times maybe four or five if I'm lucky.

Not sure if it's random or not , but on the cascade hills map the corner office home base has a plague heart right next door, and a police car at the station around the corner. Also has a large slot for the autoshop. You only need 5 people to take it over.

I think the most recent update broke this achievement, because vehicle kills simply aren't counting anymore. I spent 90 minutes the other day driving and killing zombies. I only went up 56 kills in that time. I did get out of my vehicle to make kills, so I believe that's where the 56 came from.

In testing today, I've killed at least 200 zombies in my van and none of them have counted. The only kills that are registering are when I'm using a gun or melee attacks.

The sad part about this is not only have I tweeted Undead Labs about this issue, but I also emailed them and STILL haven't received a response.

I finished my 4th playthrough last night (Aug. 20th) and only moved 6%. As of this morning the vehicle kills are not counting for me. It seems to have been unintentionally altered by the last patch.

I can confirm vehicle kills are not counting as well. Ran over more than 200, and no movement on the percentage tracker or TA. Killed about 50 on foot after that, and the percentage went up.

Concerning the car kill issue. I suspect they have gotten multiple complaints and just can't respond to everyone. They will most likely fix it in the next patch.

For anyone reading this the Daybreak DLC counts towards total killed and if you complete all 7 waves you can get upwards of 700 kills a match

Daybreak is the way to go. If you want to complete the whole game, there isn't any reason to grind kills in a car as the DLC requires a stupid amount of waves played. I've gone up 30% or more doing the DLC and I've still got a long way to go.

Does anyone else have the progress reset completely when switching between campaign communities?

Loving the achievement title name, being a reference to The Walking Dead s7.

Cars do not count again, at least for me. Reinstalled, nothing.

Talking about cars i think that 2 of the best options are the ambulance and police car (i found both on plateau territory). They haven't a horn but a siren, once activated (RS) it will be active until you disable it. Thats an hell of a noise to attract zombies!

What a friggin' slog that was. Ugh.
I had <2k after doing everything else. Must've taken 12h of farming to get up to 10k.

I preferred the Mazda RX lookalike sports car. Had to repair often but I liked the handling and fuel efficiency. Alternatively the utility truck with a snow plow in the front works well.

FYI, @Dislodged Puma, the downvotes are for putting up a guide without unlocking the achvt yourself. You get some heat for that inevitably, it is what it is. :/

The church base is a good strategy so far. I unofrtunately never found an ambulance or cop car in this world map, so I am using a normal car. But it consistently brings zombies to the base. Just drive circles around it spamming the horn and you can rack up some kills fairly quickly. I still have a long ways to go, but thats the best method so far. Ill try to go try out the other base with the announcer box after this drys up.

Damn dude, nice guide! I was literally just about to write my own version up until I saw yours updated! You've pretty much covered all points - the only other thing I can think of is that sometimes driving around in an open field can be a good way to take out zombies consistently - also, when you break down materials into parts so that you can make the repair kits - if you have a survivor that's skilled in craftsmanship (can be learned by a book, commonly found in libraries or houses on bookshelves) you can create a Forge which apparently breaks down materials more efficiently so you don't have to do as many supply runs to restock your repair kits...my personal favourite was the police car for its fuel efficiency and speed (not as durable as other cars though but still pretty reasonable), I also used a little Mazda MX5 with a light armor upgrade as well as the medium weight 'impaler' from the ultimate edition DLC pack. I found the large vehicles (ambulance included) to be way too slow and not manoeuvrable enough. Solid work :P

@Biohazard1320 - The cars are randomly spawned, yes. It is confirmed that if you see a randomly spawned car and you move it just to the other side of the street or something, something new will eventually spawn in its place. Also, I haven't seen a map yet where I haven't seen a police car or ambulance, but maybe you're just having bad luck. I'd make sure you hit every survey point to make sure there isn't one hidden somewhere. I found my police car in the middle of an empty area next to a tent.

I had about 80% after the legacies. I mostly 3 shotted (didn't even wait for spawns) the plague hearts and ignored infestations unless a mission came up for them. I did mostly missions tbh so it didn't feel grindy, would hit zombies with my doors on the way and most of the time you are saving people from infestations it makes anyway. I suspect npc kills count, at least on missions and base invasions.

It didn't feel like I used an usual high amount of repair kits, lots of gas though. I think hitting them with the door makes your car last longer between repairs. At 99% I did a few infestations by honking the horn a couple times and driving back and forth. I didn't bother with upgrading the car. mostly used the yellow truck.

@Kanchanaburi, I had just over 6k zombies killed in 4 playthroughs and I didn't even remotely take my time with it. The game simply just wants you to play at a normal pace and not blitz for 10k zombies killed. There is also an entire DLC expansion coming at some point this year, so you don't have to get it right away. I don't think the devs ever intended 4 playthroughs being 10k kills. I think it was probably always about an achievement meant for those who stick with a community for weeks at a time or those who play beyond the 4 required playthroughs.

Ladies and gents, this appears to be fixed now. Jumped in a vehicle and spent about 5 minutes running over zombies. I'm up 36 kills, having only killed 3 zombies with guns/melee.

This is awesome news, now I just hope that the 7,500 kills I already had did not get erased. I might even wait until the Daybreak update which is suppose to release next Wednesday. It is looking like a horde/survival type mode so there will probably be a lot of kills involved. Also if it is similar to the other DLC in the original game it will probably be pretty fun, especially in cooperative.

I can confirm that if you're running over zombies, driving backwards does little to no damage to your vehicle. I've killed hundreds of zombies on dread mode with a single car going backwards whereas if i drove through a horde once going forward, the car would be destroyed. I've found the best vehicles to use for this are the trucks...Rhames, Utility Truck, Military Truck. Cars are too touchy and vans aren't touchy enough. Additionally, you can start a dread mode using a survivor with the driving ability. I typically just drove around the map stopping at a gas station for fuel, then do all the billboards and the vehicles i spotted. A lot of times, there is a repair kit in random vehicle trunks so these are a big help.

Edit: I said dread mode because i found that there happened to be a lot of hordes i could find on dread mode.

the best solution I found after finishing the game, and having a considerable loot
was to give level 3 some facilities in the base
Radio Tower
Workshop
Deposit
and have 5 gas outposts
this way you will have endless resources per day
5-6 gasolines
and the workshop dismantling broken guns, and those pieces of guns

Gasoline and Screws
to make the toolboxes for cars when they break

so with the fastest car in the game in 2 hours, you can kill many zombies, activate the horn all the time
and the more hordes you have on the map, the better
do not kill the howler, it will attract more random zombies to the horde

I made this video live on Mixer yesterday to help
is my first guide, so sorry for any mistake

Sorry for the Google Translator

I speak Portuguese, English is not my forte.
I hope they can unlock or achievement

For this achievement I made sure
-Choose trader as leader/builder boon from previous playthrough
- choose Meagher valley
- Get Squelones brewery asap (1500 influence, 6 survivors)
- Use 1 large slot for trading post
- 3 small slots for hydrophonics, 1 workshop,1 infirmary, and the other large slot auto shop
- Make influence from brewing packs of crafted beer (cost 3 food but with 3 hydrophonics and using seeds on them you should be pulling 16-20 food a DAY in)
- call traders for ANYTHING (this is were the trader leadership comes in handy- the ability to call traders to your base assuming you’ve made the TRADING OUTPOST) your missing, supplies!!, get a CNC saw installed (again bought from traders/found in the world) and convert supplies to parts for your TOOLBOXES -you buy all your FUELBAGS from TRADERS and use the storage icon to convert into actual fuel for your vehicle. use the 3-4 outposts for bed slots, or whatever you want.

It’s upto you what vehicle you want to use but I’d HIGLY recommend the Maximilion, get a medium vehicle upgrade kit on it to make it the MEGA MAX (which can be bought from calling a parts trader to your base) I say this because I tried using the road racer etc and I found the handling very stiff, with the maximilion you can pull on the stick and whip the car round better than any other vehicle I’ve come across - also I’d put the horn in the settings to an easier default button, I chose ‘B’ which was the handbrake (won’t need it in maximilion)

Anyway use your self efficient running base to craft all the supplies you need whilst your out on road runs smashing zeds - fill the trunk up with fuel and your invent with tool boxes and 1 fuel can i was using 2-3 tool boxes per fuel canister - I feel like I’ve rambled on a lot, one last thing if anyone reads this message my GT I’ve lots and lots of spare tool boxes, gas cans and influence (10k+) so ill stock you up as much as I can 🤗
