How to unlock the What Was Will Be achievement in Stellaris - Definitive Guide

As with all achievements in Stellaris, you must be playing in IronMan mode. For the text of all possible paths in the dialogue, I recommend reading the entry in the official wiki: https://stellaris.paradoxwikis.com/Horizon_Signal

The ability to unlock this achievement is generated at the time a game is created, so reloading a save is not an effective means of grinding. Per the wiki there is a 5% chance of any particular game including the Horizon Signal event. If your game DOES include the event, a random unclaimed black hole system will be the trigger, initiated by entering the system with a manned Science Ship.

Note that this event will never appear in a game where you play as a gestalt empire.

In the event you don't get this while aiming for other achievements, you can grind it (and the two Galatron-related achievements if you need those) by setting up a Tiny galaxy (200 stars) with no AI, no FE, no Marauders, Hyperlanes set to max. If you are grinding for the Galatron, also set Primitives to a value of 2 or more and Caravaneers to On. Because the achievement is RNG-determined at game creation, using the smallest map reduces the amount of work needed to check if the event can happen in any given game. A bigger map gives more black holes, but that just means you have more to check and doesn't improve your odds. If you own the Distant Stars DLC, I recommend disabling it to reduce the number of black hole systems that are spawned.

Start the game and look at the map. Even though you can't see all of the hyperlanes and the systems all show as unknown, you can visually identify the 1-4 black hole systems. Send your existing Science Ship out using Explore System commands, and build a second and/or third Science Ship to speed things up or in case a ship gets whacked by a Dimensional Horror or other AI. You should be able to explore every black hole system in the galaxy in 5-7 in-game years, which takes ~5 minutes. If you trigger the event (you will get a pop up as soon as a Science Ship enters the system titled "The Horizon Signal"), great! Play the game as normal and you will eventually complete the event as long as you keep an eye on the Situation Log for updates.

If you run across the Caravaneers keep the game going long enough to open the maximum of 6 reliquaries. Check out the guide for those achievements for more details.

You need to completely complete the “Horizon Signal” chain, authored by the British writer Alexis Kennedy, screenwriter of the Sunless game series.

This chain can start with a 0.5% probability every time a scientific ship arrives at a system with a black hole. So look at the map, look for a place where the black holes will be 1-2 systems away from each other and place scientific ships between them in patrol mode. Then all that remains is to wait.

After activating the chain, you need to bring it to the end. Please note that during the execution of the chain there will be several choices that can completely change your civilization, adding its unpleasant characteristics and completely changing its worldview. So read the texts if you don’t want to end up with something completely different from what you started playing with.
