How to unlock the Practice Makes Perfect achievement in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition - Definitive Guide
Adding to grown lil man and Digimon Rage tips, I'll give my own approach to the achievement after much rage and frustration.
As mentioned before, you need to complete 55 challenges out of 110, so a 50% completion ratio (as shown on the upper right corner on the trials mode menu). Now here are my recommendations:
First, please note I've completed most challenges with all patches applied, so I didn't abuse the stun glitch.
Second, I suspect the latest patch, while addressing online lag issues, made the timing too tight for some of the challenges (off the top of my head I'd say Chun-Li #5, Dudley #3 and Yang #4/#5 for instance, but it might just be that I'm not good enough).
Third, an arcade stick would be preferable, the layout will allow for an easier reach between all 3 attack strengths, and also the stick will be more precise than the D-Pad or the thumbstick, though it's probably doable with only a vanilla X360 pad. Maybe a FightPad could be a good replacement for an arcade stick too.
Fourth: watch this YouTube playlist:

It's great beacuse it includes the visual motion input embedded, which brings me to:
Fifth: Learn the rhythm of the combos, it's much like a rhythm game, there is a music to the button presses and the chaining of the attacks. Whilst more recent games allow you to pull off decent combo with a little leeway in terms of timing and accuracy (for instance GGXX^C Plus, BlazBlue -so long as you don't mind a red combo, or Skullgirls), this one is relatively demanding.
Now, I'm going to give you the detail of my own challenges, they are, as far as I can tell, the easiest.
Also don't hesitate to use the PPP and KKK shortcuts when you have to include an EX move into the chain, make it easier on yourself.
So then here's the list of the challenges I've succesfully taken for the achievement:
Basic Parrying: 100%
Expert Parrying: 0%
Handicap Trials: 60% (1-2-3, 3 being actually easier than #2 because the CPU is quite bad a gauging Makoto's Hayate)
Akuma: 40% (1-2)
Alex: 60% (1-2-3)
Chun-Li: 40% (1-4)
Dudley: 40% (1-2)
Elena: 40% (1-2)
Hugo: 100% (those are probably the easiest character-specific at all)
Ibuki: 60% (1-2-4)
Ken: 40% (1-2)
Makoto: 40% (1-2)
Necro: 60% (1-2-3)
Oro: 60% (1-2-4)
Q: 60% (1-2-3)
Remy: 40% (1-2)
Ryu: 60% (1-2-4)
Sean: 40% (1-2)
Twelve: 40% (1-2)
Urien: 40% (1-2)
Yang: 40% (1-2)
Yun: 40% (1-2)
There you go, these are, at least to me, the least frustrating trials to get the achievement, good luck, don't forget to take a break and relax if you struggle with a challenge, and of course, practice, practice, practice.
Please leave a comment if you vote negatively, I'd like to know what I did wrong.
PS: While it says I've won it offline on TA, do note that I have frequent XBL connection losses, however I can assure you the patch had been applied prior to my connection dying on me.

Youtube vids where a HUGE help.
Seeing how he was able to do some stuff on the stick to get timing down on some of them was massively important.

Surprises me how so many people get the Basic Parrying 100% but no Expert. For me there are like 3 expert parries that are simple but like 2 basic ones that are impossible.

For this achievement you have to do 55 out of the 110 trials in Trials Mode. So don't worry so much with the Expert Parrying as it can be rather frustrating. It's really an achievement that isn't that difficult. Just do the best you can on the characters combos and if you get stuck, just skip to another character. The basic parrying is simple enough and a few characters such as Alex and Hugo have combos that are the easiest.
Here's my percentage completely for the trials, so you can get a decent idea of which way to head if you're having trouble.
Basic Parrying: 100%
Expert Parrying: 0%
Handicap Trials: 60%
Akuma: 40%
Alex: 100%
Chun-Li: 80%
Dudley: 40%

Q: 60%
Remy: 20%
Ryu: 40%
Sean: 40%
Twelve: 40%
Urien: 0%
Yang: 60%
Yun: 40%
Don't get discouraged if it gets a little frustrating. You don't have to be the best at this game to do this. Once I got the achievement, I stopped the trials. What I have listed above is exactly 50% of the trials completed. Good luck!

I used a standard controller and I suck hard at fighting games! I have to disagree with ignoring advanced parrying, I was able to do 6,7,8, and 9 after some practice after I came to a stall with character combos. My advice: watch some YouTube vids, they helped a lot with timing and stance

I just finished with the standard floating D-Pad controller.
Miserable.
How i did it:
izret102's blog post - Street Fighter III: Yeah you know what they say the Third Strike is what counts

Just got this achievement, thought I'd give my two cents. I picked up an Arcade stick a few days ago and managed to do the following trials with relative ease. I wouldn't bother trying with a pad unless you're extremely skilled (or a masochist).

Didn't want to make a guide for this but, now that i have it done, decided i will give my 2 cents about it.
The reason why is i did it with a controller, with the D-Pad, despite what everyone says IT IS doable, i won't buy a fight stick for just an achievement and i just cannot play fighting games with a joystick on a controller, so this guide is for anyone in the same boat as i was.
The way i did is going through all caracters doing what was possible to do, after that it was moping up time, at that point i kept on changing my button maping to have the buttons all next to each other(no LB/LT/RB/RT) just so combos could be easier to input and it worked perfectly. Makoto and Yun i had to, the timing for their combo 1 and 2 are way to tight to keep button spread all over the controller.
I ain't no pro in street fighters game, need perseverance and patience. there is no practice to do, only to learn the timing right then persevere to get the trial done.
Watch youtube video made from VesperArcade, he as the best video for the reason you see his controller to give you an idea of the timing.(i want no credit from is video, i havent asked him to put is name here but i don't think he would mind, since there is no link, you need to go find them yourself on youtube). In youtube input street fighter 3rd strike ryu trials, and you will see it on top of screen(change the name to which caracter you need help).
Here is the list, stopped at exactly 55 challenge, and won't bother to do more :)
Basic Parrying : 100%
Expert Parrying : 60% (6-7-8)
Handicap Trials : 60% (1-2-3...2 is super hard to do, what i did to beat it was jump backward and when your back on your feet QCF+fierce punch, its a slide/grab attack, then keep on repeating the process and eventually you'll beat chun-li) (QCF=quarter circle forward)
Akuma : 40% (1-2...couldn't do 4 cause in my opinion impossible to input fast enough with a controller)
Alex : 80% (1-2-3-4)
Chun-Li : 40% (1-4)
Dudley : 40% (1-2)
Elena : 40% (1-2)
Hugo : 100%

Makoto : 40% (1-2)
Necro : 60% (1-2-4)
Oro : 60% (1-2-4...for #2 to start the combo you need to give the jump kick late, almost before landing and you'll be ok to do the combo)
Q : 40% (1-2)
Remy : 20% (1)
Ryu : 40% (1-2...couldn't do 4 cause in my opinion impossible to input fast enough with a controller)
Sean : 40% (1-2)
Twelve : 40% (1-4)
Urien : 20% (1)
Yang : 40% (1-2)

I hope this help the hunt, remember to stay calm, if you're getting out of control take a break and go back to it another day.

First I want to thank rafa1000house for all his help with a lot of explanation for how this game works. So a lot of credit to him for this guide and I hope that this can hopefully help some people out.
What makes me very annoyed is the poor explanation on what the command inputs really mean. Just different symbols. So here are the translations to button inputs instead.
This should be updated to the other guides imo:
By default:
H hand symbol = RB (hard punch)
H kick symbol = RT (hard kick)
Double punch symbol = LB
Double kick symbol = LT
Light punch and kick has the L punch or kick symbol and they are X or A
X = light punch
A = light kick
The ones that say hand symbol and M or kick symbol and M are medium strikes.
Y = Medium punch
B = Medium kick
If there is a symbol with just a hand or a kick without L or M or H then you can choose any of the X or Y for the hand/punch and A or B for the kicks.
The ones that say for example charge down and up and you for example have to punch first standing. The only way to do this is to start by holding down and crouch because now you are already charged. Then do the punch as you release and then follow up with the left controller the way they want you to.
For many of the trials you have to be very quick with the next input.
The ones that have a Z in them are super challenging for me...
For example Kens trial 1!
Y button followed quickly with RB and then you have to do the Z with the left analog followed by Xand I struggled very much with this one. But what I did was when I did the Z I also followed up lightly with the left analog after the Z was moved to the right. And in a very light precision and not too big movements. Very hard to describe but that is the best explanation I could give.
This is how rafa suggested the Z moves should be done:
But when he wrote this helped me more:
"The z move that I do is basically 1/4 circle front to down and then down to front"
Another advice I could give is when you know the button inputs is to sometimes not look at the tv and just focus on the button inputs. This is how I managed to do Trial 1 for Ken and many others. But it is also good to look and see if you get the 2nd input in at all if there are 3 different moves you have to do. And sometimes you have to be super fast. For example Kens trial 2!
Here is a video of a good example of were you have to be very quick with the 2nd input. I failed for ages before I was quick enough. (Makoto trial 1)
His videos are good to see if you are pressing the correct buttons and to see the timing when he do the next attacks. Most of the time it does not make much sense to me.
And below a good video that helped me to do Sean´s 2nd trial that I really struggled with. As you can see he is very fast with the controller input and this made me realise that I just have to be more quick and more smoth and not much longer after watching this I finally made the 2nd trial for Sean.
You can also change inputs if you press start and go to help and options and then to controls. For Ibukis 2nd trial I changed the third input so instead of X, Y, RB and then RT and moving the analog I changed so the third input (RB) so called Fierce would be put to B button instead. Because it was really hard to be super fast when I had to press X, Y and then RB and it was much easier to be fast with X,Y then B followed up with RT. When you do this remember to save on the bottom. And when you want it back to normal go here again and change to default.
Also something worth pointing out is that if you see two yellow XX to the left in the command input section under the name of an attack you need to do it means that you have to perform the next one during the attack before. For example Alex 2nd trial has Ex slash elbow and under it there are two yellow XX so you need to do his boomerang raid during the time he perform the 2nd move called EX slash elbow.
(Rafa explained this and I had no clue about this until I had 52 trials done. Yeah games like this are way too complicated).
For the parry ones you parry by pressing forward and you have to time it perfectly. Use the D-pad instead since that is much easier to parry with. The 9th expert trial you have to parry the 4th attack low and to parry a low attack you press Down and NOT down forward. The bad thing is that even if I parried all his attacks I failed a few times when my life bar still was green/full. When you parry you get some damage sometimes and when I did get some damage parrying all of his 5 attacks I succeeded.
(For the 7th one with the big fireball you have to get lucky and just mashing the D-pad forward and fun thing it does sound like Oro is saying my name when he soots his fireball).
Here are a decent video showing the parry ones:
I will add my trials here: The other guides are very good guidelines for what trials that you could attempt.
Here are the ones that I did!
Note is that I really struggled with Akuma´s 2nd trial and Alex 2nd trial and with just one trial left to do I still had these left undone.
Basic Parrying = 100 %
Expert Parrying = 60 % / I did parry 7,8,9
Handicap Trials = 80 % / I did trial 1,2,3,4
For handicap 4 with Yun vs Alex I just kept doing the + and sometimes I did extra damage when the bottom left bar had filled up. And jump back as soon you might get parried.
Akuma Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,4
For Akuma´s 4th Trial I changed the first button to LB and I am super fast to do the 2nd move but after many, many attempts I gave up but then I decided to try again later when I only had 2 trials left for the achievement. I was just a tad faster and somehow managed to get this one but I think you also can´t stand too close when you do the first attack with the roundkick. (Rafa told me) This was a very challenging trial. (I never did Akuma´s 2nd trial because I just kept failing. It was very difficult for me).
Alex Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,2
Alex 2nd trial was my last one for the achievement! To do this one you have to crouch down and slowly press back with the analog and then when Alex is standing up press B quickly for his first attack and then you already have your charge going for you and move quickly forward and press LT for the double kick symbol attack. And while you perform this attack you have to follow up super quick with down forward down forward and any punch button. These charge ones weren´t easy but when I finally understood them they were doable but surely not easy.
Chun Li Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,4 (4 was the easiest of all trials)
Dudley Trials = 20 % / I did trial 1 (Easy when you know how to do Z move).
Elena Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,2
I Finally did get Elena´s 2nd trial done and it was a lot thanks to rafa that explained how. So you move forward and press down and A and while you do this you continue with the left analog and do the second move and quickly while doing that you also do the third one. Really complicated but this is how he explained it. I just got lucky not really knowing what I did.
For first attack and while doing this follow up with and while doing that follow up with
Hugo Trials = 100 % / I did all of them (2nd one is the toughest imo).
Ibuki Trials = 60 % / I did trial 1,2,4
Ken Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,2
Makoto Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,2
Necro Trials = 60 % / I did trial 1,2,4
Oro Trials = 60 % / I did trial 1,2,4
Q Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,2
Q´s 2nd trial:
For me it was really tough to understand the charge move! You have to crouch and slowly use the left analog so it is almost pointing left and charge then when Q stand up while holding down left analog to the left and hit with B and quickly follow up with moving the left analog to the right for the charge attack + LB and then finish it with RT for the hard kick but you have to wait for a bit so it can hit. Super tough!
Remy Trials = 20 % / I did trial 1
Ruy Trials = 60 % / I did trial 1,2,4
Sean Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,2 (The 2nd one was very tough for me).
Twelve Trials = 60 % / I did trial 1,2,4
Urien Trials = 20 % / I did trial 1
Yang Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,2
Yun Trials = 40 % / I did trial 1,2
After so many attempts on this and I mean like 2 hours or so I got some really good advice from rafa and it is the same with Akuma´s 4th trial he said but that one is so much tougher.
Here is how to do Yun´s 2nd trial that I really struggled with!
Y
Wait a moment
Start making half circle forward
Press A
Press X when you finish the half circle movement.
So Instead of waiting to do the half circle you do it before the 2nd attack!
I hope this length of a guide help someone!

Practice makes perfect is the challenge that is tied with the trials of the game. This is easily the most annoying achievement of the bunch, and it will most likely take up the most of your time. The majority of challenges require combos with picky timing, however there are some fight related challenges as well as beginner and advanced level parrying.
Naturally, I can't give you fool proof tips on how to make these challenges easier. Repetition is the only way you'll be able to complete them. Before a patch, one was able to stun the opponents and be able to link their combos together that way. If you can remove the patch, chances are this will be significantly easier. That's sadly the only shortcut however, the only other answer is plenty of practice.
Each character has 5 trials of their own related to combos, and the 3 sections mentioned previously have 5 trials as well. Thankfully you don't have to complete them all, only 55 of them. There are 22 sections of trials, meaning you have a total of 110 to choose from. Taking this in to consideration, that means you only have to complete half of the trials for this trophy however that's still quite a challenge. Don't give up on a character completely because one trial is tough, sometimes the later trials are less tricky than the early ones. Vesper has videos which show both his inputs as well as the combos being completed which can give you a vague idea on timing, but that's sadly all that you'll get from them. Best of luck with this one, it's tricky!

Here is my guide i did when i was playing xbox on trueachievements.com(i did copy paste)
Didn't want to make a guide for this but, now that i have it done, decided i will give my 2 cents about it.
The reason why is i did it with a controller, with the D-Pad, despite what everyone says IT IS doable, i won't buy a fight stick for just a trophy and i just cannot play fighting games with a joystick on a controller, so this guide is for anyone in the same boat as i was.
The way i did is going through all caracters doing what was possible to do, after that it was moping up time, at that point i kept on changing my button maping to have the buttons all next to each other(no L1/L2/R1/R2) just so combos could be easier to input and it worked perfectly.

Remy : 20% (1)
Ryu : 40% (1-2...couldn't do 4 cause in my opinion impossible to input fast enough with a controller)

The challenge "Practice Makes Perfect" is for completing 55/110 trials in Trials Mode.
The trials are much like any other form of trial mode in the fighting game, you are given character combos you must perform successfully. 3rd Strike Online Edition has also give you 3 extra trial sections next to the usual character trials such as:
The trials are much like any other form of trial mode in the fighting game, you are given character combos you must perform successfully. 3rd Strike Online Edition has also give you 3 extra trial sections next to the usual character trials such as:
- Basic Parrying
- Advancing Parrying
- Handicap Trials
Parrying Trials:
Just as it is titled you are given different parrying trials which start from something as simple as parrying a hadoken, to multiple hit supers and finally performing the famous EVO moment where Daigo Umehara parries Chun-Li's Multi-hit Super and following it up with a Super Combo Finish to win the match.
Handicap Trials:
These trials are 1 rounds matches where you are given a health deduction and you must defeat an opponent under a specific difficult setting. As you complete each of trials the handicap becomes higher and higher as you are slowly reduced to no health at all where one hit can kill you facing a CPU opponent on expert difficulty.
If you are having trouble with the trials you could also use the visual aids from VesperArcade's Youtube Channel where he displays each trial and his inputs on his stick while he does it.
Make Your Trials VERY Easy:
While this trick may not work for a couple of the trials it works very well with most of them. Basically you enter training mode and press , select dummy settings and switch stun "on". Confirm you have it on by hitting your training dummy and they should be stunned when you hit them (It'll be indicated with baby chicks flying around their head).
Once you have this confirmed exit out into any of the character trials and the red stun bar below their health bar should now be full. This makes linking combos much easier as you are now given two chances to link your combos together. For example say you are trying to do Ken's 3rd Character Trial aka the follow up from the EVO moment which is: Air > > Strong Shoryuken (+) > Shippuu-Jinrai-Kyaku ( + )
You can link together the Air > and then with the stun it'll give a little breathing room to connect Strong Shoryuken (+) > Shippuu-Jinrai-Kyaku ( + )

Removing Game Updates:
If you are using this guide and the glitch as already been patched, then you can follow the steps below to get rid of the update so that you may use the stun glitch again.
- Under Games, highlight the 3rd Strike game then press and delete it.
- Go into your Transaction History and re-download the game.
- Now start the game without accepting the update and you should be able to use the Stun Glitch again.
