How to unlock the The Kid achievement in Super Meat Boy - Definitive Guide

This one is called "The Kid", and is awarded for unlocking The Kid from I Wanna Be The Guy. The warp zone is on 5-7 "The Fallen": It's on the right end of the stage, outside the second building, down near the bottom. You have to grab the first key, hoof it through the second building and out the window, then down to the warp before it closes.

The warp zone itself contains, by the developers' own admission, three of the hardest stages in the game. Clear all three of them, and you have not only a cool 10g, but also one of the most useful characters in the game. ;)

Here's a video of the warp zone (not mine), but be warned, the guy makes it look much easier than it really is...be prepared for hundreds of deaths on these levels.

Hmmm, would it be accurate in saying that the first stage is hard as balls but the other two aren't so bad? That what it looks like to me.
Yes pretty much , It really isn't as bad as I thought for my first hour of trying I kept holding down the run trigger the entire time in stage 1 because for some unholy reason I thought you had to hold the trigger in order to activate their powers , in this case the double jump.

Maybe a tip for some , The part at 0:37 was all about the initial setup for me I would wall slide up to almost hitting the spikes then wait just a moment and the rest on the way up was kind of easy , If you end up being too low at the start you'll die every time.
Also I found it easier to USE the trigger for more speed starting at the spot 0:39 until 0:41 on the vid , doing this seemed to help me alot , once you reach the point at 0:43 your passed the hardest part.

On 2 I used run on the elevators with the spikes at 1:24 and start on the wall like he does then when the very top of the elevator your on is about to hit the top of the two spikes move to the other side. Going down on the opposite side I never devised a system like that I just went with my gut but 9/10 times I could make it to the second half of level 2.

1=the cockblocker of the bunch
2=not hard since you don't jump much but it is unforgiving
3=A reward for beating 1 + 2

I spent more than 30 minutes in the first part and didn't pass ):
Now it's more comfortable to know that it'll give me an achievement, thanks! Thumbs up!

I wouldn't say the second and third are "easy" by any stretch of the imagination, but the first one was definitely the most difficult to me. Your results may vary, though. :)

3,000 deaths, 5-6 hours.

This wasn't very fun for me, I would've given up if I hadn't beaten the first level when I did, couldn't really accept losing that progress so I pushed on till I finished all three. I had moderate trouble with the other two also, really due to the inertia when you need to move very slightly, tight timing elements and the amount my thumbs hurt by the time I got to the third level, double jumping became a bitch.

For comparison's sake, in order to do Worlds 1-6, some dark worlds, some bandages and some Cotton Alley I'd died 2,600 times. I more then doubled that in these three levels, so proceed with caution if you're not a masochist.

I had the most trouble with level 1 (like most), but actually found level 2 to be the most frustrating of the bunch. It's significantly easier than level 1, but that makes dying on it that much worse - the pace of the damn elevator made me want to rip my hair out.

Sweet! Glad this one is out of the way, the drop off extra jump really helps on stage 1, took me about 45 mins, but after stage 1 it gets a lot easier

Third level is really mean. I can't believe anyone would call the third level easy.

The first time I reached the third level I was really angry at myself, because I had spent hours beating the first two levels, and almost immediately after trying the third level, I thought to myself "this is impossible to beat, I wasted hours reaching this level for nothing!"

I ended up getting it though... so happy

Actually doing this cheevos :

My though :

LVL 1 is hard, challenging, really put your talents to work
LVL 2 is a breeze in the park.
LVL 3 is... I hate it. I look like a retarded in my room, moving my leg while playing for jumping higher like it was a kinect game. Too stressful for me... but it'll stay open as long as I don't get it.

1st part is the only difficult one, and really only because the 2nd column going up requires very precise positioning on the back and forth wall jumps. Took less than 1 hour total, with about 50 min on the first part. The 2nd and 3rd part were easy since they are just testing your rhythm instead of precision jumping like on the 1st part.

But overall, I thought this wasn't even as hard as the Skyscraper warp zone (5-1 warp.) After all, you get unlimited tries here, but only 3 lives per stage on non-character warp zones.

So I just got this achievement..... I hate the developers of this game.

It took me 45 minutes and about 400 attempts in total.

1st level about 20 minutes and is the hardest for actual skill

2nd level about 20 minutes as well, more about getting the timing down but torture nonetheless.

3r level about 5 minutes and honestly, not that tough. Thumb started to be sore from double talking "A" button so much but finally got there.

I'm average when it comes to gaming so I'd say if I can do it anyone can with enough patience. Having said that, this is the hardest achievement I think I've ever done. Good luck guys!!!

I played this lvl 1 of this warp forever yesterday to no avail. the minute I watched a different video I got it on my 2nd try, after playing all day; here is my tip:

When you finish the vertical parts in and are about to do the final horizontal portions...youll notice this vid the guy does it all in one motion, the biggest key for me was using the side walls in the horizontal part, makes level 1 soooooooo much easier

The second stage for sure is the most frustrating: It looks easy, the first two elevators ARE easy ... OK ... but that 3rd elevator obviously comes directly from hell and bombarded me with cheap and stupid deaths for at least two hours (i did actually rage-quit this stage on my first attempt) ... 'The Kid' for sure has a weird hit-box ...

The third stage is actually pretty straightforward (compared to the other two) once you figure out when and how you have to jump.

Sadly by the time i unlocked 'The Kid' i only had ch.6 (dark world) and ch.7 (dark world) left and i'm also done with 100 bandages, which makes 'The Kid' pretty useless for me as ch.6 and 7 don't let you switch characters.

A tip regarding the run button. On the first stage you only need it for the larger jumps at the end. On the second stage you only need it for the big jump in the middle. But on the 3rd stage I used it all the time! It's easier to control without the run button so makes it a little easier imo.

Don't know if this helps but on the second stage I found it good to use the elevator as a visual cue in regards to the spike for when to move. As the 2 middle ones are at the youtube video picture above before you play is a good place to run to the other side.

You don't have to use the run button at all on stage 1 or 2. I never touched it on those stages. On the third stage I had that right trigger (run) in a death grip the whole time though!

This is the best advice I've seen on completing these stages. While the run button is not needed for that first horizontal jump near the end, the extra distance makes clearing it much easier. The middle jump really does appear to require a running leap; I'd dispute that it's not necessary as the length appears to be too great, but perhaps it can be done with excellent timing. Still, why would you want to make the obstacles harder on yourself anyway?

For the middle section of the third level, I found it easier to time my wall jump with the scrolling spike wall to outrun it entirely, but seeing how it's a relatively easy part anyway and an untimed stage, I'm sure many will be fine with just jumping over it same as the rest.

I figured this out on my own at some point, but yes, it makes a HUGE difference. Don't use run on stage 1 or 2, hold onto it for dear life in 3.

If you drop off the edge of a platform, you still have two jumps. On stage 1, I found it easier to drop off and then jump up to the left. At the end of the vertical walls, I jumped around that last column to the space against the wall before doing two jumps across the long row of spikes (the first jump being quite small so you miss the spikes above). I only used the run button for the very last double jump (being careful not to jump too high).

The rest I completed very similarly to the video JotaroRaido posted. It took me hours! Good luck!!

This is no stand-alone solution. It's more like an addon to the great solutions by JotaroRaido and demonWhistler. I will just go more into detail with the levels (Warpzone is in 5-7).

Main tips:
Take your time. You will need at least an hour but its better to plan in about 2-3 hours so you aren't under any pressure.
Dont even think about getting The Kid before you killed the Main Story in the Light World. These three levels are fuckin diffcult and can go fuck themselves.
Be fuckin concentrated. DO NOT leave the couch for every ten minutes just because youre frustrated. I was, too, but you will NEED to get a feeling for EVERY jump you make. That just takes time. You NEED to get that feeling for the jumps and when you leave the couch to make a break you'll lose that feeling somehow. I myself needed about 20-25 minutes until I beat a level it the first time. In total it took me about an hour and 15 minutes for all three levels.
I did a break after every level. About 10-15 minutes just relaxing on the internet. Mostly because I wanted the adrenalin to get his ass out of me. This just makes you nervous and you need patience for those jumps.
Also: If you really cant do a jump look it up in the video. Seeing how its done makes it a lot easier.

Level 1 (The hardest one):
As most of the people say: Let go off the RT until the larger jumps at the end. I myself used the RT button also for those two fall down jumps.
The wall jumps just need time to get used to. You cant do "right-left-right-left" like normal in the game. Get used to the slider (when you jump against the wall you'll slide a bid upwards). You also need to be very high on every side to not hit the spikes when you cross jump. If you are too low, you'll die. I myself adjusted The Kid after the first jump from the wall which you hit after the fall jump (the one at 0:33. You'll have enough space there)
The last few jumps are fairly easy but don't forget: You WILL NEED to get a feeling for those jumps because the kid is (and I dont mention ogmo here) the first character which has a double jump.

If you now managed to beat level one, take a 10 min break

Level 2 (Now its about timing)
The only pain in the ass are the second and third elevator where those fuckin spikes are much closer together. You'll need to get a feeling for the time when to run from left to right and right to left. I tried to stay in the middle and just slightly move. That works too but youll have an even harder time on elevator number three so do it as the video guide shows you: RUN. It takes its time to get used to yeah, but once you manage to kick elevator three in its fuckin ass the rest will be a piece of cake. The jump in the middle of the stage is fairly easy. Why? because you showed level one who's boss!
I myself did elevator 1 and 4 with the D-Pad. RT for elevator 2,3 and the big jump.

Time for ten minutes of drinking, eating and trolling on the internet!

Level 3 (Timing and jumps now 50:50)
RT needs to be pressed all the time. Also, your right thumb will hurt after a while because of the A-Button (at least mine did).
The last three tunnels till you get what you wanted. I read a comment that the level was fairly easy compared to the rest. I find it fairly difficult. Yeah, level one can go fuck itself and level two is invited too but level three is the little annoying brother which wants to be part of the party too.

First tunnel: DO NOT get greedy to make more and more space. The main focus should be on avoiding the asshole spikes. you need to make a good double jump and CANT jump towards the spikes. If you jump high (with no direction pressed) you can hit right or left AFTER you pased the spikes. otherwise you will be jumping towards your death. Tunnel one will be most like your grave for the first 100 death but once you (yeah you guessed it) got a feeling for those jumps its time for the rest.
Tunnel Two: I like to adjust myself at the right wall to have a perfect timing for those jumps in tunnel 2 (Time in the video is 1:54). In this tunnel you'll bypass the asshole spikes 2-3 times. The first time is at 1:56. Make sure to jump high high and once the asshole spikes are under your ass you need to press right to make a good jump over it. Then a jump (no double jump) with RT over those spikes at the bottom and then bypass the asshole spikes again and against the other wall. Time for:
Tunnel Three: If you come this far you need about 10-12 tries here. I did it nearly like in the video BUT i made a left right left jump over the first asshole spikes. That mean I used the little side on the right wall between tunnel 2 and 3 to make that left right left jump. If your timing is good youll have an easier time than in the video. The rest just like the video. Again. DO NOT get too greedy.

Ok, thats it. It is a motherfuckin pain in the ass and you'll most likely hate the game for it but hey its a challenge and nowadays where a lot of video games are like movies which take the player by the hand and have NO challenge at all just to make it more attractive for the mass (or maybe I am just frustrated because it takes so goddamn long for Mirrors Edge 2 to get its ass released), this game is awesome and once you have the kid you feel like the man. hey, YOU ARE! GOOD JOB! You recieved not only the Kid but also a 10GS achievement and most likely carpal tunnel!
It just takes patience and concentration. Do NOT ragequit or leave after you beat level one because its really the hardest. Do not let your emotions fuck you. Youll make it, I'm sure!

Thanks again to JotaroRaido and demonWhistler for their great tips. I hope this guide helped. Let me know what you think. Video is down there, its the same like JotaroRaido has but I thought I put it in too because I made references in my guide. Good luck hunting and please vote up the guide of those two!

Greetings from Cologne, Germany!

The Kid (from the game "I Wanna Be The Guy") is unlocked by finding and beating the warp-zone in level 5-7 ("The Fallen"). The warpzone is located on the floor outside the 2nd building. But you have to hurry before the warp-zone disappears.

Here is a video of it (it's not from me). Don't let it fool you. Although it looks easy, this warpzone is propably the hardest in the whole game (took me hours back on the 360 ;) ). But The Kid is one of the best characters in the whole game on the other hand, so it's worth the efford.

I just got this and wanted to add some tips I used that helped me big time. First of all focus your eyes on the gaps rather than Kid or the walls or anything, trust your hands to react once you get practice on the levels.

Don't get frustrated if you die as you will lots, make it fun. I found that if I died near the end i'd just kill myself a few times to ease the frustration.

Level 1:
Drop off the first ledge so you still have your 2 double jumps, once you are through the gap I used RT to hook around to the near side of the wall. keep following the gaps with your eyes, moving them ahead to be ready for the next section. This is particularly helpful on the vertical drops and the L shaped jump in the top right

On the 2nd wall that comes down from the ceiling, the bottom right of this can be used for a breather, just hug it and keep jumping up when you slide to the bottom brick. Once you're ready to move on jump up when you slide to the 2nd last brick and then up through the spikes

For the L shaped jump in the top right, you want to do a slight shuffle while focusing on the gap. Jump right, flick the stick left and then immediately push and hold right, then slam on A + RT. The timing is key here so practice practice.

I didn't use RT at all for the last few jumps I just felt I had more control without it.

Level 2
The other guides are great for this, but one tip I have is at the middle jump you don't need RT. Just time your first jump once you reach the 2nd last ground block before the spikes and you should be G2G. For column 2 and 3 I used RT from wall to wall between spikes as I found it easier to build up a rhythm

Level 3
Not much more to add only I didn't really use RT except when moving between rows and doing the jumps in the middle tunnel. It's a good idea to take a (sorta) breather between rows by Sliding down/jumping up repeatedly between both sets of spikes. This also means you can time your next jump better. Fro Tunnel 1 -> 2 aim to jump just after the spikes move

Congrats if you get this it's super hard

This is NOT a stand-alone solution. It is a series of tips to add on to the other solutions here.

I need to get this down while it is still clear in my head, so please bear with me since I am very tired. Read the other poster's guides, they are very helpful, but there are a few nuances that they didn't address which I had to learn through TONS to trial and error, so these may serve you well, but based on all the other comments on the other solutions there is more than one way to go through this warp zone. So consider my tips, but you may find that some help you while others do not. I will focus on the tips that took me the longest to learn and helped the most.

LEVEL 1: (I did not use run AT ALL this level)
- In the fourth column where you are heading up again there are two ways to approach these jumps, but it depends where you end up at the end of your jumps. If you end up very close to the spikes you can just jump right across and be fine. But if you are not almost right next to the spikes, you need to hold the direction of your jump to the wall you are jumping FROM initially then switch to the opposite wall. The reason for this is that the arc of your jump will carry you onto the spikes on the opposite wall if you are not right next to the spikes on your wall. I found it easiest to just end up right next to the spikes and jump across, but you are not screwed if you don't

- The jump from the fourth column to the middle platform. IGNORE THE VIDEO. That jump is possible, and I was able to do occasionally, but when I changed my jump here, I was able to do it almost every time. When you jump from the fourth column, aim for the open wall on left the top platform. From there, it is MUCH easier to make it over and down to the second platform.

-The jump from the middle platform to the bottom platform. The hard part here is fighting your instinct. The kid's double jump carries him really far, so you don't need to hug the wall while trying to jump down, I died many times trying to hug the wall. It is completely fine if you jump out nice and open into the middle of the drop, clear the middle platform then jump over. Fight your instincts.

LEVEL 2: (I used run once here)
- For the 1st and 4th column, I used the same strategy. 3 steps are all you need to avoid these spikes. 3 steps back and forth as you pass the spikes. Don't move all the way to the edge of the platform each time, it will be too hard to get back over as you pass the spikes.

- For the 2nd and 3rd column, you only need 1 step to avoid the spikes. The spikes are slightly offset from one another. If you were to put the spikes right across from one another you would have half a person's space between them. The kids moves half a person's space when he takes a step. SO, always keep half your body in this middle column between the spikes and half away from the spike you are closest to. That way, once you move past the spike you only need to take one step to clear the next one. These spikes are also closer together, so you have to step quicker.

- For the jump in the middle of the level I used run. Once you finish the jump TAKE A BREATHER. Far too many times I rushed myself onto the next platform going down. There is no reason to rush, you have all the time you need. Finish the jump and wait for the next platform down so you are not rushed to get set up before the spikes.

LEVEL 3: (I used run the whole level)
-The first set of spikes are hard to avoid since you are completely still. You either need to get used to the initial jump with no margin for error or you could jump onto the back wall and over the oncoming spikes.

- DON'T be greedy. Make slow progress forward. Especially at the end of the bottom tunnel, my tendency was to jump for the wall when I clear the last set of ceiling spikes. Do one more jump over the oncoming spikes before you go for the wall.

- In the middle tunnel, jump over the first floor spikes from the far right wall with 1 jump, then double jump over the oncoming spikes. Jump over the second two floor spikes with one jump, double jump over the oncoming spikes. Jump over the last of the floor spikes with one jump, then double jump over the oncoming spikes. Whenever you touch the ground it is time to start jumping again, otherwise you will jump too late.

- In the top tunnel, you want to jump over the first set of oncoming spikes from the left wall. This will also carry you over the first set of floor spikes and put you under the first set of ceiling spikes.

- In the top tunnel, you want to make very slow forward progress. Your first jump over oncoming spikes after the one I mentioned above needs to be before the first set of ceiling spikes in the top tunnel. The next one is after the first ceiling spikes, then over the second floor spikes, then before the second ceiling spikes, then after the second ceiling spikes. Then over the third set of floor spikes. THEN you can grab bandage girl. Essentially make a jump every time you progress forward.

Please let me know if you think I could have done something better with these tips, and I will try to update them with your suggestions.

You will unlock The Kid by clearing his Warp Zone located in 5-7. This Warp Zone is the hardest one in the entire game and might require a few hours of practice before succeeding. Please check I'm A Golden God! if you need help with this Warp Zone and Retro Rampage for more info about how Warp Zones work.

Oh god. The Kid. You wanna be the guy in Super Meat Boy? Here’s some tips:

1. Trial and error. It’s needed a lot. You might spend hours on this one. Learn from how you die and look at how you can avoid it the next run.

2. Precision. Stopping is a death sentence in most parts of the levels.

Level One:
Start by sprinting, don’t jump yet, but double jump when you can move to the right and land onto the left wall, wall jump as you normally would but then, jump once, don’t double yet, fall down the tight spike wall, then jump to the next safe spot, this next area will have very precise jumps, try to hit about the middle of where you will jump to the next wall, then do it 3 more times, hit the wall with no spikes to recharge your double jump, jump across the wide gap of spikes and into the hole. Careful of the spikes on the wall and left slab. When you land here, I suggest to take a second, then get ready for these jumps. Sprint and double jump to get past the first jump, try not to hold. Second jump, drop in the middle of the fall, then jump when you’re close to the spike floor then slight to the right, then a quick double jump. Dont spam A or you will die. But click kind of fast.

Level 2
The worst of the 3 in my opinion. Go left and right when directed to at a very narrow pace for the first two walls. In the middle just hold sprint then quickly tap jump to avoid the spikes on the ceiling. Then you’ll be doing the same thing you did with the escalators on the beginning, but in reverse. Third one is tighter than the first. Fourth is identical.

Level 3
The spike walls require a double jump to pass. The trick is to look carefully at where the non-wall spikes are, always land in those gaps before dodging the walls for the first two and you won’t die often.
For the third floor, you have to wait for the wall to be coming and double jump forward over them. Rinse and repeat to finish this level. Oddly this was the easiest of the 3 levels.

First took me 3 hours, second took me 8, and the third was like half an hour XD

When this is all done, you will be the guy. I hope whoever designed this warp gets rocks in their shoes, or LEGO pieces.
