How to unlock the Chess Master achievement in Superliminal - Definitive Guide

If you want to see which ones you've collected, at the start of most chapters is a 'reception'. The computer screen at reception shows which chess pieces you've currently collected.

There's chess pieces in every chapter except chapter 9.

1st Chapter - 1 Chess Piece:
Blue Pawn
In the room where there's a room with wooden boards over an open doorway, remove the wooden boards and proceed through to the vending machine. Get a drink can, and then make it huge in the main room. Use the wooden planks to form ramps up onto the edge of the white-lit room. On one of the corners of the top of the wall is the chess piece.

2nd Chapter - 2 Chess Pieces:
Red Castle
This is in the same room as the Chapter 2 constellation. In the room with the yellow metal stairs on the right, take the exit sign (or the door) from the previous room, and use it as a ramp to get up onto the massive wooden structure in the middle of this room.

Blue Knight
This is in the same room as the 'Please Use Other Door' achievement. Use the cube and the green chess piece to get onto the ventilation on the right side of the chess-piece-shaped hole in the wall. The blue knight is at the end of the ventilation pipe.

3rd Chapter - 2 Chess Pieces:
Red King
In the room where a die is split into two halves, you'll notice a ventilation duct just above where that dice is. Position the two die halves in such a way so that you can jump up and grab the light red chess piece from inside the duct. This is awkward, but it is grabbable. Take the two halves of the dice with you, as well as the dice from the previous room into the next room for the Red Queen below.

Red Queen
The red queen is in the large room with a high ceiling, with an air conditioning unit coming from the wall on the left. The red queen is on top of it.

4th Chapter - 2 Chess Pieces:
Blue Pawn
In the room where you have to navigate around high stacks of cardboard boxes by using a red exit sign. When you see the exit to the room, turn around, and start climbing the cardboard boxes with the sign.

Blue Pawn
In the cafeteria room, where you turn on the generator, look through the right window of the left kitchen (if you were looking back the way you came from), and take a tin of beans from the table. Go up the right diagonal plank, jump onto the shelving, and run along it. You'll see the blue pawn chess piece outside of the right window. Position the tin of beans once or twice to get up to the window, jump out, pick up the chess piece, jump back in and continue on.

5th Chapter - 2 Chess Pieces:
Blue Pawn
This one is in the room BEFORE the room where you first meet the duplicating alarm clock. Bring the duplicating alarm clock to the previous room, and look in the air when you release it so that it falls down. Grab it just before it hits you to have a huge alarm clock. Use it to make 'stairs' with additional alarm clocks to get onto the ventilation system to get the chess piece.

Red Knight
This is in the room directly after the duplicating red apple room with the fan. Jump from the chair, to the door, to the light, to the megaphone, to the ventilation pipe, and then walk along it to get the chess piece.

6th Chapter - 1 Chess Pieces:
Blue King
When you go through your first window of this level, there will be a doorway you will need to go through, but don't go through it yet. On top of the doorway is a Blue King. Stand behind the doorway, look up, and your icon should turn to the grabbing hand icon. Interact with it to get the chess piece. There is also a blueprint in the back left of this room on top of the cardboard box.
External image

Chapter 7 - 2 Chess Pieces:
Red Pawn
You'll be in a large room where the only way to continue is to pull a 'pull-bar' door off of the wall half way up on one side. Make this door a huge ramp up to the doorframe it fell from, and inside is the Red Pawn piece behind a window, and also a fire extinguisher.
External image

Blue Queen
The room with the yellow knight chess piece is where you want to go. Move yourself up the pipes from the table with the lamp, and then move the yellow knight so it's slanted, and get really high for the blue queen.

Chapter 8 - 3 Chess Pieces:
Blue Pawn
In the very first room, grab the SomnaSculpt building on the table opposite the bed, enlarge it and walk through it. Re-shrink the building down and place it back where you first found it. Now go through the portal you came through to shrink yourself down in the small parking lot. One of the buildings is called Jungles' Bistro. Enter this building on the back. Inside is a bar. The blue pawn chess piece is on the top shelf of soda cans behind the bar.

Blue Castle
Directly on from the above piece, go back through the SomnaSculpt building so you're regular size. Move the mini-building into the drinks slot of the vending machine, and then go through the regular-sized-door portal behind you. You'll see the piece in the top left corner of the drinks slot, with the opening to your right side.

Yes, after you complete the game. It also shows which collectibles you're missing in each level.

@Majora There's more than one collectible of a kind in some levels. And you're actually incorrect. It starts showing which collectibles in which level after you pick up the first one you find.

No problem. Just trying to make sure everyone knows exactly how the game works, because it's a big mind-fuck!

I Found a Red Pawn in Chapter 7. in the room where you fall sideways and have to pull a door off the wall, use the door as a ramp to get into the sideways hallway and the Pawn is hidden in a window on the floor.

For the blue pawn in Chapter 4: instead of trying to mess with the red sign to make a big ramp continue forward into the 2nd set of boxes and you'll be able to jump up while inside them using the red sign as a platform.

Chapter 8: right at the start grab the small building, enlarge it and walk through it. Instead of making the paradox. Re-shrink the building down and place it back where you first found it. Now go through the other portal to shrink yourself down in the small parking lot. One of the buildings is called Jungles' Bistro. You can actually enter this building on the backside while tiny. The chess piece is on the top shelf of soda cans behind the bar. It's in the back row. I honestly can't remember which piece it was though.

There seems to be two more pieces in this level but I'm still looking for them.

Chapter 8: there's a Blue Rook in the drink slot of the vending machine in the first section. Shrink the building down and place it in the drink slot and then walk through the portal behind you.

I'm not seeing the pictures for the red pawn in chapter 8, could anyone describe the location?

He's working on getting them all uploaded. Final red pawn is in the section with the giant water coolers. Same section that has the constellation room. It's hard to put into words but you need to grab the chess pieces from the next room and use them to climb up to the giant ridge that circles most of this area. One of the water coolers will have a splash of red on it. This is part of the red pawn. The rest of it is located on the ridge itself and you'll have to align your perspective up to make the red pawn appear. When you first enter this area, facing the exit, I found it easiest to climb up on the left side of the ridge but the piece itself is up on the right side of it.

Thank you! I started trying to climb chess pieces but it was proving difficult so I gave up. I will try again.

No worries! I just thought it was on my end so I downloaded a new browser and that didn't solve it so that was why I asked. Thank you for the guides!

I'm lining up this Red Pawn in chapter 8 and it's not picking up! Ugh.

Edit: Apparently you don't line it up perfectly. You leave some gap in between. Finally got it.

Ok I have zero idea what I'm doing wrong. Blue Pawn, in the Jungle Bistro. The back isn't open, I search online and it says it should appear on a second play thru, it doesnt, doesnt open if you go there on level select. I've played thru the game start to finish 12 times. The door. Doesn't. Open.

Man, this game has garbage save states. Replayed it again and the damn collectibles don't save. Will go through a level collecting all the bs and after going to level select all the collectible icons are still greyed out. What a waste of time.

@BRzLnWaRMachine - Had zero issues with that. I think the game only saves at certain points though. Most puzzle games are like that. Try getting it and hitting a checkpoint.

Chapter 8, the blue pawn in the jungle bistro. The door is closed with a sign that says come back later. What gives? Does this require a full second playthough? Can it be done with level select? A little clarification please.

@Cybrg, you're probably in the wrong one. Try going through the shrinking thing again.

I am also having trouble getting the door to open for the Jungle Bistro as well. I did everything exactly like the TA walkthrough stated as well as watching videos and have not done anything differently. Has there been some update for it that hasn't been mentioned to how to open the door? Or is there a certain playthrough for it? I've only ran through the game once. Any help from somebody who has recently gotten this would be greatly appreciated!!!

The Jungle Bistro door will not open until you come back after finishing the game (which can be done via level select); you might also need to have every other collectable before it opens.

I never said there couldn't be more than one collectible in a level. There's a million fire extinguishers and fire alarms for example. Also, what I said wasn't really incorrect. It does show which you're missing. If you haven't found a single one of the collectibles, clearly you're still missing them wink. I'm just teasing though. I didn't realize the type didn't show up until you collect at least one. I had at least one of each after the first playthrough so I apologize for the misinformation.

I've read that you're supposed to see the ending of the game before the door will be open so there's a chance it might have bugged with the newest update. Have you actually completed the game through to the end? Just wanted to point that out. I love the game dearly but I've played through it way too many times to justify downloading and looking into it more.

Jungle bistro closed door solution:
Pick up the building on the table and enlarge it.
Go through the enlarged buildings door.
Go past the vending machine and you'll see the building you just went in.
Pick it up and reduce its size until it can fit on the model table again.
Go back through the door past the vending machine.
You'll now be on the model table and can walk around back of the jungle bistro and get inside.

There are an assortment of collectibles to grab throughout the game. To see a full walkthrough of all collectibles in the game, please see Fire Alarmist trophy_bronze.png. The Level Select screen wil show you which collectibles you still need to complete in each level.

There are 15 secret chess pieces throughout the game. These collectibles are usually neon in color and are mostly in hard to reach places or hidden in plainsight. In a game where you can make a wedge of cheese into a 40 foot tall ramp, you will be able to reach all of them as you progress. Follow the collectible guide linked above to located all the pieces.

The Level breakdown for the secret chess pieces are as follows:

Induction: 1
Optical: 2
Cubism: 2
Blackout: 2
Clone; 2
Dollhouse: 1
Labyrinth: 2
Whitespace: 3

There is a specific starburst animation that occurs when you find and click on the secret chess pieces and a sound so you will know when the collectible has been registered. Once you find one of the chess pieces, it will disappear from the room and thegame for good.
