How to unlock the Into the Unknown achievement in Surviving Mars - Definitive Guide

You get a game over when you have no more colonists alive in your colony and no more applicants. So, to unlock the achievement, you must have:

1. Twelve or fewer colonists
2. An asteroid about to leave Mars
3. An asteroid lander capable of carrying colonists, and
4. No applicants

(EDITED) You can send as many colonists to the asteroid as you want, but they must completely deplete your colony on Mars. It is not necessary to build a habitat and life support for them on the asteroid. When the asteroid leaves, you need to have only one colonist remaining on it, none on Mars, and no new applicants. The "game over" must be the result of the asteroid leaving, not as the result of the last colonist dying.

As I'm sure you know, applicants back out when your colonists die of causes other than old age. In my playthrough, I stacked this achievement with

Surviving MarsSpace DwarvesLt DavoThe Space Dwarves achievement in Surviving Mars worth 60 pointsAll your colonists live underground (at least 200 colonists)

After the above achievement unlocked, I turned off all life support underground. It seems word got back to Earth pretty quickly.

I happened to have the "More applicants" rule selected when going for this, which made it tougher because, with it, new applicants appear every few game hours no matter how many colonists you kill let die. It was crucial for me that I got my last colonists on the asteroid about 17 hours, I think, before it left, which was about the perfect amount of time for all but one of them to die and keep discouraging any new applicants.

This achievement is quite difficult to get it on a normal playthrough, due to the requirements mentioned above. I was able to get it finally, but I had to create a new game specifically to get this.

What I did was I created a new game with the last ark rule, so you can only call 1 rocket with people from earth. Also, boost production, fast rockets, prefab colony, no disasters, etc. Rules that will make this run faster BUT dont disable achievements - keep in mind that this game will be to loose, not to have a succesfull colony.

For sponsor choose International Mars mission or whatever is called and Inventor as commander. I also had no rival colonies, no mystery & picked the map that is entirely flat.

Start your colony, build a moisture vap ASAP as well as a refinery, then mine for other resources. Once that is done, build a dome - I only built housing, a garden, ampitheater and a gym (this last one depends on the colonist you pick). Once that is build call your passenger rocket, you will only bring ONE single human aboard, make sure it has NO flaws, and is NOT a specialist (this is bicoz specialist have specific needs, regardless of their traits). Also it helps to have rugged and hippie as traits.

I also made sure to wait until the colony approval stage completed. IDK if this has any impact.

Outsource all your research, focus entirely on the recon tree but be EXTRA careful, researching anything that interacts with asteroids will trigger the first asteroid - which you need to avoid until you have habitats. For me, having the colonist on the lander and let him go, didnt trigger the achievement, so I do recommend going for the asteroid habitat, for this you will need to research all underground techonlogies until is revealed on the tree. It also helps to send your rover to the underground and research anomalies.

Once you have it available, research it however once it is around 95% completed, switch for the lander tech. Once lander tech is completed, set the habitat tech and complete it. This will give you around 10 sols to prepare

At this point the first asteroid should be available for visiting, you will need many metals and machine parts, as well as some polymers to build a water auto extractor (I believe that this can be ordered as a prefab), water tank, oxygen tank, the electrolizer (the oxygen machine), a 3 bateries and the habitat.

I strongly recommend to build the asteroid colony but make sure to have the water extractor off, otherwise you can consume all the water, since usually the asteroids dont have that many. once the asteroid is on 1 sol and a half to leave, send the colonist and let him live there.

Once the asteroid leaves, you will get a prompt about losing the game with options to go to load a game or go to the main menu - at this point the achievement pop.

I could not get this by sending all remaining colonists off to an asteroid. I very specifically had to only send a single colonist to an asteroid, and kill off all colonists still remaining on Mars before the asteroid went out of range.

Folks on Steam seem to agree this is a bug in the achievement description ("colonists" instead of "colonist"): https://steamcommunity.com/app/464920/discussions/0/30855203...

Maybe experiences have varied, but when I unlocked it, I had 7 or 8 colonists, sent them all on the same rocket to an asteroid, and didn't set up any life support for them. (The reason I wanted them to die all the way up to the bitter end was to suppress new applicants.) They died off quickly, leaving one alive when the asteroid left. That worked for me. So, while the achievement may be buggy, my experience doesn't concur that fixing it is a simple matter of changing the word colonists to colonist.

Same fail in the German achievement description. It clearly uses the plural *grml*
I'd wasted a couple of hours trying different methods again and again and simply didn't get a game over screen, but a dead lock.
After reading these posts I built a Micro G Habitat and checked the time it takes for a colonist to die after being kicked out of the dome. Then it was just a matter of persuading one after the other to convince the applicants that Mars is a not so great choice.
With this knowledge it was a first try win.

Thank you!

As OP of this solution, I appreciate the comments and tips people have made, and I understand that there can be more than one way to go about things, and sometimes achievements are buggy. That being said, it is not required that you send only one colonist to the asteroid, and it is also not required to build a habitat. If doing those things helps you, then great, but it might work out just fine, like it did for me, without doing them.

I can actually confirm that you need a SINGLE colonist. The achievement do not unlock if you have more than one alive on the leaving asteroid.
I have a save with an asteroid colony of 22 colonists that do not unlock the achievement. Reloading and forcefully killing of 21 of them before the asteroid leave, DID unlock the achievement.

@Caislen I take it that having only one colonist alive at the end does matter, but your experience and mine both disprove the theory that it only unlocks if you send a single colonist to the asteroid. I will edit the solution appropriately.
