How to unlock the The Watney Challenge achievement in Surviving Mars - Definitive Guide

Got this on my first attempt playing as USA.

First of all choose your landing site and prepare for your Dome

Domes require water, oxygen and power (I'd recommend a couple of wind turbines and some solar panels to keep power going).

Once built you need to bring over your colonist.
Press the cn_LTand choose Resupply from the menu
Now select Passenger Rocket

The aim is to take just one person to Mars, this is indicated by the Matching Colonists number on the right hand side.

I changed all of the categories to thumbs down using cn_right
I then changed the following to positive to get one colonist using cn_left:
Age - Youth
Speciliasation - Botanist
Sex - Female
Perks -Sexy
Flaws - I left this all thumbs down
Quirks - guru

With one Colonist in the Matching Colonist section press cn_X to launch.
If you have more than one play with the options above to get just one.

While the colonist was on the way I built living quarters and a farm.
When the colonist arrives land the ship near the dome and set them to work in the farm so they don't starve.

I sped the time up and just waited after 8 SOL's the message appears saying the colony is viable and the achievement popped.

Just make sure the colonist has food, power, water and air and you should get this easily.

I second Daft Incarnate's suggestion of choosing a Religious person. Also, one person working a farm would probably lead to a lot of crop failures (it did for me, anyways). So Darklight's suggestion of importing food on a cargo ship is really good.

Interestingly, my one colonist also got Earthsick during this time. I wasn't able to change their comfort because they refused to work and there was no one else to staff the Services buildings. And the moment another rocket with more colonists landed, he returned to Earth. It may be possible to knock out "A Better Planet" at the same time as this if timing works in your favor.

To make this go faster and get Aren't They Cute at the same time, use these settings:

Sponsor: SpaceY
Profile: Mayor (for 2000 extra cash)
Game Rules: Prefab Colony, Faster Rockets, More Applicants. (Prefab Colony will give you a bunch of free buildings, including a dome. Faster Rockets for convenience. More Applicants to get a better colonist selection.) - at time of writing these do not disable achievements

Customise your first rocket to get rid of all the vehicles, probes and prefabs except one moisture vaporator, add 10-15 food and fill the rest with drones (don't change the polymers/electronics/machine parts, they will be needed for maintenance). Build out your infrastructure with the prefabs, build a dome with housing and a farm.

Send across your lone colonist - you can set your filters on the passenger rocket as normal and then choose one individual by pressing RT and toggle thumbs up with the d-pad. I went for a Botanist with Rugged, as other have suggested Religious would also be good

While you are waiting for the 10 sols to pass, spam more cargo rockets containing only drones until you have 200, return them to earth as necessary. The only other items you may need to send are more prefab moisture vaporators depending on the water situation - you should have enough money for a few of these along with the drones.

With these settings you can get both achievements well before sol 15.

I would recommend a Religious person with the Survivor Perk that way they won't commit suicide or die immediately if their needs arent met or the dome loses air/water.
I also found they kept getting crop failure on the farm when I did this, so brought in food on a shuttle instead.

I‘d also like to add that you should construct a hydroponic farm inside the dome, not a large regular farm. The reason is that the former can be operated by a single individual more easily. A large farm needs just too many botanists to run smoothly without crop failures. Also, the large farm must be unlocked by research & development, whereas the hydroponic farm is available from the start.
I managed the achievement on my third attempt around Sol 16.
The rest of the solutions and comments are great. But only the use of the type of farm can be misleading.

This is a simple achievement if you follow my strategy shown in the video below.

There are also few other achievements you can try for at the same time (scanning all sectors, positronic man, others).

1. Unless you have the unending supplies perk on shuttle in enough food to last 10 sols. 1 colonist eats 0.2 food per day, so one stack will do.

2. Choose a religious or saint colonist. These colonists will not commit suicide which is important since the colonists morale will get pretty bad.

3. Land the colonist and don't bring a rocket back to Mars for 10 sols until the founder stage is over because the lone colonist will have terrible morale very quickly and will leave the first chance they get.

I know they're just pixels, but I felt like a massive jerk by the end of the 10 sols haha.

This is a reference to the film The Martian. Once you’ve set up your first Dome, you can call only one Colonist from Mars. I highly recommend that you pick the Religious trait along with as many beneficial perks as possible. The Religious trait gives the Colonist higher base Morale and prevents him from committing suicide due to low Sanity. As you only have one Colonist, it is pretty much impossible to produce anything with him during the Colony Approval stage (10 Sols). You’ll need to call for resupplies, mainly for Food, but also other resources that the drones will need for building maintenance.

It is necessary for one settler to survive 9 sols allotted for the assessment of the colony. The breakthrough technology Service Robots will make obtaining this trophy much easier. Having studied it in advance, service sector buildings will no longer require workers, and the colonist will no longer have to eat raw food. Otherwise, when choosing your first and only founder of the colony, you should be guided by his young age, the absence of shortcomings such as alcoholism, grumpiness, hypochondria and love for video games, the presence of a positive character trait - survival, due to which he loses less health without food, water, food and electricity. It is absolutely ideal if he is a botanist by profession.
Upon arrival, we assign him to work in a hydroponic farm, grow Laminaria. And we wait for the time allotted for the assessment.
