How to unlock the Life Tears Us Apart achievement in Tell Me Why - Definitive Guide
I did the Replay option from the beginning of Chapter 1 and restarted my progress. Hold to skip all cutscenes to make this go much faster. I also skipped most memory sequences if they weren't required to progress the story. This shouldn't take you more than 2-4 hours at most, depending on where you decide to start.
Chapter 1
- Don't accept Eddy's gift from Alyson on the boat.
- Break open Mary-Ann's door in the Ronan house. Don't solve the puzzle.
- Choose Alyson's memory in the grocery store "Tessa was angry".
- Pick the option "Eddy did his best for me" at the Police Station.
At the summary screen I received "disappointed", "downhearted", "lack of trust", and "rift". The star was also split in half after those four scenarios.
Chapter 2
- Choose Alyson's memory "Mary-Ann was sad".
- Pick the option "Let's do it" when speaking with the realtor on the phone.
- Pick the option "Are you kidding me?!" when confronted by Eddy after the Archives section in the Police Station.
- Pick the option "Even after what I did for you?" at the dock.
At the summary screen I received "discarded", "didn't feel heard", and "felt let down". The star was still split in half after those three scenarios.
Chapter 3
- Tell Michael about the memories, then pick the option "Won't do any good".
- Pick the options "We're too different" and "I was the kid who killed his mom" during the ice fishing conversation with Michael.
- In the loft, break open the small chest with the crowbar instead of cracking the code. Then pick the dialogue options to proceed with breaking it open.
- Choose Stick to your memory "Mary-Ann threatened Tyler" but I do not think this decision is pivotal to the final outcome. I believe this is what gives you the different epilogues, and the opportunity to do the Tyler/Alyson endings regardless of their bond.
At the summary screen I received "disappointed", and "the twins' bond was broken". Achievement unlocked during the credits.
If you replay from Chapter 2, the core decisions seem to be the following 5 (the only 5 that show up in the consequences page). Spoiler Tags!
I also chose the dialogue options listed in both encounters with Michael in Ch. 3 to be safe, but even with the notifications, I'm not sure it made a material difference.
I'm pretty sure it's only decisions that show up on your consequences page (4 in Ch. 1, 3 in Ch. 2, 2 in Ch. 3) that matter even if you get star separating or joining symbols for other choices. Logically speaking, I think the consequences page in DONTNOD games distinguish the decisions that actually matter.
Some of the decisions didn't even have any bond significance, from my playtesting - forgiving Tessa or failing the fishing date, for example.
May as well follow the solution to be safe, I guess.
on your second playthrough (via replay option). To weaken you bond you have to choose mostly the negative choices in the game. There is no indicator in the game how many you needed, so for the safe side I recommend to replay! the game from chapter 1 (not isolated mode!) and be negative as possible. You can skip a lot of cutscenes and save a lot of time.
Here is a list of all my negative choices during my playthrough. The remaining choices should not be any effect to any achievement in the game (as example Tessa at Graveyard)

Second Playthrough
So I thought about the only time that I got the icon that my decision would pull the twins apart: in the Plushie Battle scene I showed interest in Michael.
So continuing from there I did the following decisions:
In Chapter 2
Chose Tyler's goodbye scene by the totem pole in the graveyard.
Rejected Tessa at Mary Ann's grave.
While on the bench I chose selfish/accusatory dialogue for Tyler.
At the dock I pushed Tyler's resentment and had him try to guilt Alyson into helping him.
During chapter 3:
I did not tell Michael about the twin's powers.
Failed the breathing exercise outside the police station.
Did not tell Chief Brown the truth.
Yelled at Sam and confronted about his drinking and in general was hostile to him.
Did not fish for the 2nd and 3rd fish while choosing the negative, Tyler suffered more than Alyson options and rejected his interest this time.
Skipped all puzzles in the loft, kept trying letters (then back out a few times) until a crowbar was mentioned, got it downstairs on the floor by the hole and broke the box. (Thank you Kryostega for the extra details)
Finally, I chose the memory that Mary Ann was trying to kill young Tyler.
As a final move I cut the call to Tyler as short as possible by pressing B.
Remember to use the Y button to skip cinematics, but be aware that many of your important negative decisions require the X button. So you still need to watch what you are doing.
This took me an hour to speed through.
Please let me know if you need anymore clarification. Like I said I had gotten all twin bonding icons before the plushie battle. It might take less bad decisions than what I did but I did not want to have to replay this game a third time so I went back to half way through Chapter 2.

As such, this guide can only be viewed as a “partial” guide, which, if it doesn’t work for you, means you will likely have to endure a complete playthrough of the whole game again! ....bearing in mind it is not my fault that DONTNOD put this achievement in the game ...ho hum! ..I am only trying to help you!

This what I did to get this “weakened the twins’ bond “ achievo , or the “Alyson ending”...which will also allow you to get the “start new chapter with Alyson “ achievo too.
The run through (below) will take less than 1 hour with ample use of “Y” to skip dialog.
I am assuming that you have already got the “Tyler ending”. . . So you are already familiar with the game somewhat.
Let us begin!
Replay chapter 3 from “Paternity test”
Fail the panic attack app on your phone (press RT as per the mini game tutorial, but then do not press anything so that you fail the 5 deep breaths).
Do NOT tell Eddy that you (Alyson) were the one that killed your mom... press dialogue options “X” (I wanna forget), and “X” (I can’t move on).
Fishing: fish for the first fish only (seems like you have to fish for the first fish and it is impossible to fail). When fishing opportunities 2 and 3 appear, do not press anything.
Whilst fishing (or not-fishing) out on the frozen lake, tell Michael that you (Tyler & Alyson) are too different (dialogue option “X”), and then say that you (Tyler) killed your mom (“X” again).
Break open the chest in the Barn Loft: At the first puzzle, say to Alyson that you are stumped a few times, then turn the letters a few times on the box, and look at and back out of the box a few times . . .this should trigger the audio telling you that you need a crowbar to smash the box: Leave the loft, and get the crowbar from downstairs on the floor. Return upstairs and break the box, being that you are all done with games!
On the pier, choose the option on the left: “Stick to your memory: Mary-Anne threatened Tyler”.
You should then see Alyson packing the car....... yippee! You are nearly there!
In the house, in Mary-Anne’s room “write the final chapter” in the book on the desk . . . this will end the game and get you 2 achievos: this one for weakening the twins’ bond and also the “start new chapter with Alyson” achievo.

You may also Refer to Zasta 360GameTV' Solution. Its details covers choices that involve affecting the Twins' Bond - not every are Bond affecting though.
Aim to complete the story with more choices made, that weaken the Twins' Bond. In my case, I chose to replay from Chapter 2/Scene 3 while updating saved progression from then on, and previous Scenes' saved progression involved 4 pleasing Consequences that directly involve the Twins. At the end, I had 5 pleasing Consequences, and 5 compromising Consequences, that directly affected the Twins. While replaying from then on, I made about six choices with denoted Bond weakening, and about two choices with Bond strengthening effect, up until the end of story. On the story progress before that point, I mostly made choices that benefit the Bond strengthening, denoted with the before mentioned animated icon. By only skipping already known versions of conversational scenes, the replay time was just about 40min, or so. Mission accomplished, for that Xbox Achievement!
Now that you have an idea about what is what, you may start by comparing these details of the decisions for related Consequences, with yours, which are listed below. Find out and decide from where to start replaying on.

-Weak compromising Consequence: Refused the ring (Alyson was disappointed that Tyler didn't accept Eddy's peace offering)

Scene 7 (Rashomon):
-Compromising Consequence: Chose Alyson's memory
Scene 8 (To Serve And Protect):
-Compromising Consequence: Sided with Eddy

The game is full of choices, though not all of them affect the twins' bond. You need to complete the game with ~80% separating choices over bonding choices. A list of consequences can be found in the “Chapters” menu from the main menu. Only the consequences with the bonding symbol count toward/against this. Your choices will dictate how far you need to backtrack in order to strengthen or weaken their bond. All choices and chapters are listed below:
