How to unlock the Pokerface achievement in The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 - Definitive Guide

So here's what I did. The bad part is it's not a sure-fire strategy, as part of this requires luck. The good part, though, is that you can 1) do the practice round as many times as you need to get a firm grasp of the rules, and 2) if you lose for real, you can challenge him again and again. I got it on my second try.

The rules are as follow:

- Ivo and the Red Pirate both get five six-sided dice.
- Each die is labeled 1-5 with the sixth side being a star. The star acts as a Joker in a card deck.
- One person rolls their dice and claims what they have. The hands are the same as poker.
- The other person says if they are lying or not.
- If an accusation of lying is given, that person shows their hand. If they were lying, they lose the round. If they were not lying, the accuser wins the round.
- If an accusation of lying is not given, then the next person rolls and the process starts over.
- When you make a claim of your hand, it must be higher than your opponent's previous claim.
- Once you've rolled, you can choose to keep your hand or re-roll any of your dice. This sometimes helps, but not as often as I would have liked.
- There are five rounds, and the first to win three rounds wins the game. Each win is denoted by a small stone that you take to your side.

A few tips to help out (since it's a game of chance, these might not help:

- Red seems to usually start (for me) with claiming he has three-of-a-kind or a straight. I found that believing him works the best on this, as he usually has three of a kind and will win the round if you call him a liar.
- If you manage to get four-of-a-kind on your first roll (either through actually having four-of-a-kind or having some stars that make that work), then you've pretty much won that round. If he calls you a liar, you've won. If he believes you, he has to say he has five-of-a-kind, and calling him a liar usually works, winning you the round.
- If you have a bad hand, even after re-rolling, you may just have to suck it up and take the loss. That's what rematches are for, after all.

These are really the only tips I can give. Just keep at it and you should have three rounds in no time. Once you've beaten him, the achievement should pop and Ivo will receive the Pirate outfit.

Good tips.

Red always told the truth on the first rounds in the games I played. I lost the first set of three but asked for a rematch, won, and got this achievement. Aside from losing the round to Red, there seems no downside to taking a loss.

Chapter 4 missable achievement - once you begin as Ivo and arrive on the floating island, you will soon encounter Nate, Critter, and the Red Pirate. after the conversation, talk to the Red Pirate again and ask about the game they were playing, he will explain the rules, and offer you a practice game, which can be repeated if desired. when you choose "let's play!" you will have to win 3 out of 5 rounds for the achievement. you can retry as many times as you like if you lose.

it's basically played like Yahtzee with poker hands made from dice. the difference is that you are forced to claim you have some hand whether you do or not, and you have to always be able to beat the previous players hand. i suggest to not play risky or bluff, and always believe him until the end, unless he calls 5 of a kind right away, which is actually possible with wild cards. my goal was to get 4 of a kind as soon as possible, because then he has to say he has a 5 of a kind no matter what. your only choice is to call his bluff, and he won't have it if you're fast.

i got this achievement on my very first three rounds when i played this game for the second time through. the first round i got lucky, because i missed what he said and then accidentally picked "i don't believe you", but the next two rounds i won by getting 4 of a kind then calling his bluff.

Chapter 4
These achievements can be missed.

Ivo character
Place = Courtyard:

There's a trial going on. Nate and Critter are in the stocks. Ivo talks to the Red Pirate. Ask about the oracle. It's in the round building.
Look at the Red Pirate and talk to him. Ask him about cheating. Now you get to play pirate poker. You need to win three of five games.
You can talk to him as many times as you like to keep trying until you win, once you beat him you get a pirate's outfit.

How to beat the pirate ? :
Put you face disguise on that you got from the ogre, and the pirate will never be able to read your bluffs.
After that, you can ALWAYS call fou of kind and he will not challenge you.
He'll be forced to say five of a kind and he odds of him actualy that are basically none. So he automatically loses.

Remember : The star acts as a joker in a card deck.
Keep the jokers and the identical dices and redraw the others.

This trophy must be accomplished during Chapter 4 on the floating island of Tugator. It is missable because it is not required for the story and you must complete it before moving on to the next area.

At any point of your "free play" in this location, head to the Red Pirate and speak with him until you unlock the ability to challenge him to a poker game via a dialog option. You must defeat him by winning 3 out of 5 games. You may try as many times as you need to. Step-By-Step: LINK

Chapter 4: This is a missable achievement that must be obtained before Ivo leaves the island of Tugator. At any time Ivo can challenge the Red Pirate to a game of Pirate Poker. The rules are simple and the achievement unlocks when you beat him three out of five times. You can try as many times as you want. Most of the game relies on luck but I recommend never lying to him about your hand, because he always seems to know if you are. Only accuse him of lying if he gets a very high hand on the first role. Otherwise just play enough times and you will win.
