How to unlock the Deer Boss achievement in The Deer God - Definitive Guide
Bosses: Eagle, Snapping Turtle, Beaver, Snake, and Kind Toad.
Snapping Turtle, and Snake can be accessed above ground via cave entrances.
Eagle is the final boss, cannot be missed.
Beaver (Hidden Boss): Probably the hardest one to find he is accessed by ground pounding a block into a hidden cave. When you are in this cave, he will be in the bottom right corner. Took me almost 100K of traveling distance before I randomly came across this one, in a Elder Deer End Game play through. Be proactive, and go for turnips and other collectibles while trying to find the Beaver.
All non-story related bosses are luck based.
My personal strategies: (Hail Storm is your friend)
Eagle: Sit on right side of nest, and use Hail storm continuously to kill birds. Then when birds are killed simply sit in the middle of the nest and Hail Storm when Eagle flies in. If your lucky it will get caught in the storm off screen and instantly die.
King Toad: Sit near exit to cave, and just continuously use Hail Storm until Toad is dead. Hits will only register when Toads mouth is open.
Beaver: I actually just went all HAM with Fireshield, and the item that regenerates health. I think its a beehive. Then just kept hitting him and fire balling him. He died rather quickly. Probably the easiest boss.
Snake: When the snake gets close to the stalagmites jump into them and they will fall and hit the snake knocking it senseless. Just ground pound it. Rinse and Repeat until dead.
Turtle: I just sat on the upper edge and hailstormed it to death, taking no damage.
Happy Hunting.
How to beat the beaver?
- Important Note: If you have difficulty finding last bosses and you have walked 80000 - 90000 Mts without success, do not lose your time continuing in this save. Start a new save and story, repeat the short quests. There is a 70% of probability to find all bosses in first 35000 Mts of your journey.
STEPS for DEER BOSS achievements:
1 - You must kill all (5) bosses in game: Snake, Turtle, Beaver, Eagle, King Toad.
2 - (2) Bosses out of (5) are story related and can be killed only 1 time. They are: Turtle and Eagle. You will meet Turtle very early in the game as part of a quest (not missable) but probably after you have killed the Snake Boss that spawn often as the first one. You will meet Eagle in the last quest (not missable) before the end phase. Be sure to use Viper Poison (as explained in step 2 to make things easier).
3 - Snake Boss (first one often) must be killed 8/10 times to get a lot of Viper Poison (help you to inflict great damage to enemies and bosses) and other useful object. It can be found in the swamp biome (You will see a great cavern entrance).
4 - Beaver Boss and King Toad Bosses can be found later in the game (randomly spawned) and you will access their location by ground pounding a block and going down. Try to kill them always 4/5 times to be sure that the game counter will work fine.
5 - MOST IMPORTANT STEP: Lot of people killed the bosses but don't unlocked the achievement because the Beaver one often suicide himself against spikes in his cavern location. BE SURE TO KILL WITH YOUR ATTACKS OR POWERS AT LEAST ONE TIME THE BEAVER BOSS AND NOT LEAVE HIM DIE WITH SPIKES (YOU CAN EASILY LEAVE HIM TAKE SOME DAMAGE AGAINST SPIKES AND THEN FINIST HIM WITH FIRESHIELD POWER AND VIPER POISON ATTACKS).
This is the method I used to get the achievement. It should guarantee The Deer Boss unlocks.
1. Start a new game on hardcore. YES. YOU MUST START OVER FROM THE BEGINNING. Hardcore ups chances of running into random bosses slightly.
2. The 3 random bosses must be found and defeated before end of game (eagle boss)
3. MUST BE DONE IN ONE SITTING. YOU CAN NOT CLOSE GAME OR QUIT TO MAIN MENU.
4. others have made it a big point to make sure beaver boss does not suicide itself, you must land the killing blow. strangely, the same people who make it sound like this is why others aren't getting the achievement do not have the achievement themselves. I honestly do not know if it makes a difference, but I didn't take a chance and followed this suggestion anyway.
if fate was on your side, achievement should unlock shortly after defeating the eagle boss.
BOSS LIST:
5 total
2 bosses are story related, they can't be missed:
Turtle
Eagle
Remaining 3 are random and appear in the following biomes:
Snake (swamp)
Frog/Toad (unsure. I found it in mountains. not to be confused with caves or the brown desert areas. mountain area looks similar to plains, but has lots of visible grey rocks beneath grass and is not situated above cave system. not 100% sure if it only spawns here)
beaver, wolverine, whatever it is (snow)
Every random boss has a boss door. There's no need to fret going out of your way to explore for random bosses, the boss doors are always placed indiscreetly. The boss door is an open doorway situated inside a small pile of grey rocks. Enter by pressing down.
the down side is you are at the mercy of the game's random generator finding the 3 random bosses. Thankfully they never appear outside of their native biomes, so you can increase the odds of finding them in your favor by exploiting story progression. Story events always take place in the same biomes and the game will keep cycling back to these biomes as long as story requirements are not met.
STORY RELATED BOSS BIOMES:
swamp:
steamboat ghost
church/loving couple
snow:
elder deer quest to free trapped deer
mountains:
this is a tough one, not sure if this was by chance or coincidence but I ran into the frog boss during the submarine quest. Uncertain if sub is situated in mountains.
BOSS STRATEGIES:
items useful against bosses;
witch hazel (invulnerability)
cobra venom (ups damage you do by a lot except vs beaver)
honeycomb (continuous health recharge; good substitute if out of witch hazel)
turtle: can only be hurt when head out of shell
eagle: razor hoof babies to death (you monster!) then wait for eagle to swoop down so you can jump - dash it. With cobra venom, eagle takes 3 hits to kill. I don't recommend using bees/falcons. It is an easy way to kill the boss, but its slow and the eagle will be chased and killed off screen.
snake: can only be damaged when knocked unconscious. do this by touching 1 of the 2 stalactites on the ceiling and having them fall on the snake's head.
frog: can only be hurt by hitting it in the face when its mouth is open.
beaver: if intending to land killing blow yourself, this boss is super annoying. boss will catapult itself in the air and impale itself on spikes lining sides of den. cobra venom is no good against this boss. my strategy was to control its movement by fighting it in the small path at the bottom right of its den. This is not perfect however, the boss can and will still fling itself into and die on the spikes on the right end. I used a witch hazel, dashed into it until I ran out of stamina (blue bar) then stood in the spikes as the beaver worked its health down bashing its head into the ice spikes. When it is 1 hit away from killing itself on the spikes, kite it to the center of the small corridor and you should be able to dash it to death. Alternately, if you have fire shield, it is very good against this boss. Once hit, the beaver will be lit on fire and sustain continual damage until the fire wears off.
if the beaver dies via suicide, and you are paranoid beating the boss didn't count, exit the den and travel right a few screen lengths (going to the next biome is not necessary) and return.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this achievement is super annoying due to the unpredictable random nature of the game. There's no telling if the game will be gracious enough to drop a boss on you even if you keep cycling the same biome, so you must be patient and keep running right until you eventually (hopefully) run into a boss door. Because of this, its impossible to give an estimate of how long this will take. When I finally got this stupid achievement to unlock, it took me about 2 hours 30 minutes. If lucky, it can be done in under 2. If unlucky, 3 or more.
as stated in the guide, he's the only boss I'm not 100% sure if that's where he spawns.
Achievement is still a bit glitched, may not unlock fot everyone
Firstly, there are 5 bosses: 2 story related and 3 random spawns. I'd definitely advise doing story and getting all the powers and skills before having a go at this one. The random bosses are generally found by Razor Hoofing breakable blocks or entering caves with .
This video provides the basics of killing each of them but more information is below:
Snapping Turtle: This is the first story-based boss, he is found in a cave after you get instructions to kill him. The easiest way to kill him is to carry on using Hail Storm when your on safe ground, keep in mind that you can only damage its head.
Eagle: The eagle is the last story-based boss and you fight him at the end of the game. To kill the eagles either razor hoof or go onto the right branch and use Hail Storm. Keep using Hail Storm to kill eagle.
Toad: The toad has a random spawn so look out for cave entrances. To kill it stay to the right of it and use either fire or Hail Storm. You can only hurt it when its mouth is open and if you follow the method it cannot harm you.
Snake*: The snake has a random spawn so look out for cave entrances. To kill it jump at the stalactites before it gets to you to drop them on its head and then razor hoof the body. Repeat a few times to kill.
Beaver*: The beaver is probably the hardest to find, but is spawns with a cave entrance and a razor hoof-able block. It is at the bottom right of the cave. To kill it force it into the spikes on each side of the cave by jumping over it as it charges or shoot it with fireballs. Sorry that the video was a bit dark for that.
Tips:
Use items in inventory effectively, a lot of them are useful
Don't wander too far from the cave or its health will regen
Try to have a good number of lives just in case
It is easiest to do when you're an adult deer.
Good luck finding and killing them all
*Timmy QQ says that to get the achievement you need to personally deliver the killing blow, and I've heard from others that you can let the spikes kill them. I think the achievement is still a bit glitchy at the moment anf that's why it's not unlocking for some people. I just suggest waiting until the next patch
All bosses must be defeated in one instance of the game. This doesn't mean one save file, but you cannot quit the game or it will reset progress. I learned this from several different attempts to systematically figure out the parameters. It wasn't cumulative over time, it wasn't on one save file, it was killing all five without closing the game entirely--in my case, defeating the eagle on one save and immediately starting another and finding the other four bosses.
The five bosses, of course, are: Turtle (story), Eagle (story), Snake, Toad, and Beaver. Start up a new game so you'll be able to get the story bosses, and begin hunting.
Turtle: Once you progress far enough to obtain Razor Hoof (the downward strike), you will find a breakable block in the ground in the cave biome. Inside is the turtle. Simply attack once (Razor Hoof), then Dodge as it pulls its head in and prepares to strike. After it attacks, repeat till dead. Cobra Venom will boost your attack power and speed this up significantly.
Eagle: The last part of the game. The eagle will take you to its nest, where you first defeat three large chicks. Fireballs and Razor Hoof strikes will serve you well here. Then load up more Cobra Venom and Razor Hoof or charge the eagle whenever it comes near. Hail and Lightning will also do some good damage.
Snake: Found by going through a doorway in the swamp biome. You must jump into one of the two stalactites when the snake is approaching, and if timed right they will fall on its head and stun it. Hit it 3-5 times (Cobra Venom if possible), then jump to an overhead platform when it wakes up. Repeat until dead.
Toad: Found via breaking a ground block in the highland cliff biome, or using the exit doorway shortly after the block if you don't have Razor Hood yet. He's only vulnerable when his mouth is open. I found it easiest to load up Witch Hazel for invulnerability, then shoot charged fireballs whenever he opened his mouth to attack. Just don't stand on the crumbling platform.
Beaver: Found by breaking a ground block in the snow biome, or using the exit doorway if you don't have Razor Hoof. He will charge at you and injure himself on the icicles, which is good to wear him down but bad for the final blow. To avoid any issues, make sure you land the last hit with your own attack instead. Use Witch Hazel and stand still in the middle of the upper area or near the left side of the lower area, where he isn't near the icicles. Razor Hoof works well here because it doesn't move you at all, meaning he won't try to move and impale himself. If he suicides, leave the area and run for about 30 seconds either direction, then double back. The bosses reload once you're out of a certain range.
Biome notes:
Swamps occur often when you're trying to find the dead husband for the woman in the desert. Intentionally ignoring this mission will keep swamps spawning more frequently.
Snowy areas are required to rescue the deer from the avalanche, the last step before the eagle. Avoid rescuing them to make snow biomes appear more frequently.
Final word: If you beat the eagle but don't have all three side bosses, choose to become a deer (the option on the left). This will let you continue in an unending post game, although I do find that you spawn the bosses more frequently in the early parts of the game.
There are five bosses in the game; two of which, the Turtle and the Eagle, are story related. The other three, the Snake, Toad, and Wolverine, are random. Look for stone doorways or bricks you can break to fall into their lairs. It can take quite a while to find all of the bosses, but stick with it and you will find them all. None of the bosses are too difficult. Either use the Fireball power or the Hailstorm to kill them quite easily.
Next is the toad boss. I found the best way to get him to spawn was to start the quest in which you help lift the submarine out of the water. Once you start the quest keep going right until you find the toad's cave. Then lift the submarine only after the toad was killed at least once.
Once the toad is dead progress the story until you have to pull out the deer from the snowdrift. Let them be until you find the badger/wolverine's cave and kill him. IMPORTANT: You must kill him yourself at least once. It's okay if he suicides on the spikes as long as you personally score the killing blow in another instance Finally kill the eagle and the achievement should unlock.
There are five bosses you need to defeat in the game. Two are part of the story and will come through normal progression. They are the turtle and eagle.
The other three (frog, snake and beaver) are all optional bosses and randomly show up in certain locations.
All of the bosses are very easy to beat in this game especially if you have some items to assist you. Snake venom doubles your damage output. If you have snake venom on hand you’ll simply have to activate it and any attack you do against the bosses is going to be super powerful. I never used anything other than the snake venom and fireball power to defeat any of the bosses. Also the optional bosses locations are COMPLETELY RANDOM. Make sure that you destroy any structure that looks breakable. You'll usually need to "break into" their lair. Regardless I’ll provide a video and some tips.
This may need to be done in a single playthrough. See THIS video for possible tips for pushing the boss spawn rate in your favor.
Here is a video of all boss locations and below text tips for defeating each boss:
Video Courtesy of Mr Krabs
Turtle (story):
Your razor hoof (stomp) ability is the way to go. Jump with and press without touching the directional buttons and you’ll stomp downwards. As seen in the video you can also exploit the environments so if you can get the boss to walk into spikes it will take damage. HOWEVER it's reported that you must inflict the FINAL BLOW. If the environment kills the boss it will negate the trophy.
Eagle (story):
The eagle will auto grab you as part of the story and throw you into her nest with three hungry babies. They kill you fast, so don’t just hang out in there with them. You can hover on the edge of the nest to the right and either throw fireballs into the nest or stomp them. Once the babies are dead, the mother will begin to swoop down and attack. Wait for her to swoop down and jump over her. As you jump over her, press to stomp. With snake venom activated it only takes a few stomps to kill her.
Frog (optional):
His entrance is in the snow mountain area. There will be a cave entrance and he's located there. It is randomized so you'll need to stumble across it. It's easiest to defeat him if you stand on the ledge to the right and shoot fireballs at him. Hailstorm also works well. Again, using snake venom greatly increases your damage output.
Beaver (optional):
The Beaver's entrance is also into the caves. You'll come across a breakable rock that can be stomped to get into. Again, it's randomized. Don't let the spikes deal the final blow to him. Just jump to avoid his attacks and stomp on him. Alternatively, you can stand on the top ledge to the right and throw fireballs down onto him.
Snake (optional):
His entrance can be found via a small mausoleum structure in the cemetery/swamp area. Use the spikes on the ceiling to stun the snake. To get them to drop, simply jump up. Avoid his attacks because they drain your life fast. When he's stunned, stomp him or shoot fireballs at him. Again, using snake venom greatly increases your damage output.
