How to unlock the You Cannot Pass achievement in The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game - Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide
Ensure that your deck has two Gandalf cards and two Narya cards. Gandalf has the Fleeting trait, so he is only on the board for one round. If you play Narya on him, it removes the Fleeting trait and he is available until/unless the enemy kills him. Note that this takes two turns and 6 resources. It is a good idea to give him a shield as well. Gandalf is unlocked from the start, but Narya requires spending in game currency to unlock (earned after every quest, this doesn’t cost real money).
Ensure that Gandalf does the final damage on any bosses you come across using his standard attack. If you kill the boss using the damage option that appears when placing Gandalf onto the field of play, it does not count for this achievement. Boss enemies are indicated with grey wings on each side of their icon. Note that in the game they are referred to as Villains, not bosses.
One of the easier places to grind this out is Campaign 1, Quest 2. The first location has three bosses (Garlob, Delob, and Ullob) and the third location boss is Ungoliant’s Spawn, a 3/12 spider. In theory you could get four boss kills per attempt, although 2-3 might be more common. If you start with giving your starting companion a shield and a fighter (I used Gimli) something to power him up (shield, axe, or Star necklace for multiple attacks) as your first two moves, you can then stall until you get Gandalf on the field. Using Block is the key, along with understanding how villains act differently from minions. As long as a minion can do at least one damage to a blocking character, it will attack even if it is suicidal to do so. A boss, however, will not suicide even if the attack will kill one of your characters. Keep your blockers alive and whittle down the villains’ health to where attacking a blocker will kill the villain, and you get a stalemate. I used Arwen to heal every turn while boosting my fate meter to get the 7-point power up, and sacrificed a few companions if necessary until Gimli was fully powered and I had Gandalf available.
One key point is that you will temporarily lose two heroes at the end of the first location, but you will PERMANENTLY lose any equipment you give them...so refrain from doing so. It may also be helpful to have your fate meter at 9+ before traveling between locations so you can instantly access the fate events specific to each location.
