How to unlock the Neighborhood Watch achievement in The Orange Box - Definitive Guide

You have to be quick and get to the Striders when they first appear. From xbox360achievements.org:

"Strider 1: From Cranes, slow walking.
Strider 2: From Sawmill, fast walking and will destroy the Sawmill if you
aren't quick.
Strider 3: From Water Tower, slow walking.
Strider 4: Cranes, slow walking.
Strider 5: Sawmill, slow walking.
Strider 6: Water Tower, Slow walking.
Strider 7: Cranes, fast walking, heads to building to south of Cranes.
Strider 8: Water Tower, fast walking, heads to the building to south of the
Water Tower.
Short Break, stock up on supplies.
Strider 9: Cranes, slow walking.
Strider 10: Sawmill, slow walking.
Strider 11: Water Tower, slow walking.
Strider 12: Sawmill, slow walking.
Strider 13: Cranes, slow walking."

Loved going for this achievement lol

Bit stressful at times (especially aiming for strider number 7) but was a great section of the game.

I found reversing 7 and 6 made everything hella easier. Especially since it puts you in the perfect place for 8.

The fast walking ones are priority as they are the only ones that destroy the buildings. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Otherwise, great solution, really helped me out.

All the striders will destroy buildings, but the faster walkers should definitely be priority since they're harder to catch and will get to buildings faster. Seems that each strider will target only one building usually about half way across the map (to give you some time, at least - not realistic, but fair).

I got this, and when replaying later realized that the strider from the cranes that destroys the building south of the cranes had gotten stuck on a rock and couldn't move. That was one less to worry about. :p

The video was the reason for the thumbs up, majorly helpful.
I took me about 5-6 tries and the only real trouble I had was during the 6th 7th and 8th because i did them in the wrong order.

Pro tip: if you have a strider which will destroy a building as soon as you look at it, turn your back to the building as it won't destroy it unless you see it. So you can kill the hunters with the logs and have a bomb ready when you eventually do a quick turn around and shoot/switch/shoot on the strider before it unleashes its beam thing.

Hi, thanks for the tips. I have some insight i want to share, but honestly don't think there's need for another solution, so i'll just leave it here to complement yours. For people who are having trouble with the rocket launcher technique, don't try to take down the fast ones with them, use the Magnusson devices instead. I was having the hardest time beating #7 with rockets, before he destroyed the house, and then i realized i could just drive fast and beat him to the house, wait for him there with the sticky bomb ready, and that's it.

So, if you are having problems, do it like this (using the rocket launcher + ammo cheat + invincibility cheat, ignore hunters whenever possible):

1. Slow, destroy with rocket lancher, staying very close to sawmill, car parked with sticky bomb close to #2 spawn point
2. Fast, Turn around, grab bomb from car and explode number 2. This one is troublesome, make sure you have a save just before it, in case you miss the bomb toss or don't get to him fast enough.
3. Slow, take down with rockets as fast as you can
4. Slow, take down with rockets as fast as you can
5. Slow, take down with rockets as fast as you can
6. Slow, Ignore for now
7. Fast, Drive fast as hell to the house the strider will aim, head inside, grab a sticky bomb, go outside and wait for it to show up. After he's dead, go inside again, grab another bomb and put in the appropriate place in the back of your car.
6 (again). Drive to him, he's about to reach the big house by now, destroy him with rockets.
8. Now, you should have around 20 seconds before #8 shows up, try to get rid of some of the hunters, otherwise they may shoot the bomb off your hand. When 8 gets near, bomb him down.

All the others are slow, take them down with rockets. I assume you have played through it once, so i don't go in full detail about locations and stuff. If you haven't, play it one time, get the hang of how to reach each one, and revert to a previous save. Save often, and in different slots and good luck!

Everything I hated about Half-Life 2 showcased in one achievement. Scripted trigger point enemies, clumsy object interaction (how many times did you grab a mine only to have in knocked off at a doorway?), useless NPCs blocking your way, and a goal impossible to achieve without perfect foreknowledge.

I just got the achievement and wanted to add some additional notes. This was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.

I used a combination ClubStew’s references and what MxOxRxRxIxS said about the “don’t look, won’t destroy” glitch. I tried the “walk backwards” technique but gave up when I realized I didn't need it :)

Where does this happen?

This is the last part of Chapter 6 “Our Mutual Fiend”.

Play through the chapter until you’re sent outside to help defend the silo from Striders. Just before you get into the car, look to your left at the map. You have to look around the guard standing in front of it. Notice that the map shows 2 large buildings about half-way down, a Saw Mill near top-center and 2 small buildings at the bottom.
External image

What buildings am I trying to save?

The 3 buildings that need to be saved are the 2 large buildings (one on the West side, South of the Cranes, one on the East side, South of the Water Tower) and the Saw Mill (top center). You do not need to save the 2 small buildings South by the Silo because they are not attacked.

How many Striders am I fighting?

There are 3 fast and 10 slow Striders plus 1 to 3 Hunters with each Strider.
Strider #1-slow from the Cranes
Strider #2-FAST from Saw Mill (from the East side of the Saw Mill)
Strider #3-slow from Water Tower
Strider #4-slow from the Cranes
Strider #5-slow from the Saw Mill
Strider #6-slow from the Water Tower
Strider #7-FAST from the Cranes and heads to the building South of the Cranes
Strider #8-FAST from the Water Tower and heads to the building South of the Water Tower
Strider #9-slow from the Cranes
Strider #10-slow from the Saw Mill
Strider #11-slow from the Water Tower
Strider #12-slow from the Saw Mill
Strider #13-slow from the Cranes

Which Striders destroy the buildings?

Only the FAST Striders (#2, #7 and #8) will attack and destroy a building and each only attacks one specific building. The SLOW moving Striders will just work their way South to the silo and will not attack the buildings, so you have more time to deal with them.

Does the “don’t look, won’t destroy” glitch really work?

The “don’t look, won’t destroy” rule absolutely works! It’s ok to look at the 3 buildings UNTIL their respective fast Strider comes out. After that, any peek at the building will cause the Strider to open fire when it gets there. Until you look at the building, the Strider just walks up to it and waits.

What other basics should I remember?

- Use the Magnusson Devices (MD) on the Striders
- Use Rockets on the Hunters.

- Reload the car with a fresh Magnusson Device when ever possible.
- Always clear out the Hunters before you move on. They destroy the Magnusson Devices while you’re trying to stick the Striders.
- I used the Invincibility and Reload cheats with the Rocket Launcher.
Invincibility = LB D-up RB D-up LB LB D-up RB RB D-up
Ammo Reload = Y B A X RB Y X A B RB
- Keep an eye on your Rocket Launcher ammo. If you switch weapons with zero rockets, you can't switch back to the Rocket Launcher and reload. If that happens, just restore the last save.

Should I make changes to my controller settings?

YES! You must at least clear the Gravity Gun quick-select (RB) because the Ammo Reload code uses RB. Also, remember to stand still while entering the codes. (thanks Epsilon Theta).

I left the LT, RT and X buttons unchanged and I changed the Sprint command to RS. All the others controls I just cleared (including the Gravity Gun shortcut button). That means that the RB, LB, A, B and Y buttons did nothing when I entered the reload code.

How often should I save?

When you get somewhere SAVE. Just before you attack a Strider SAVE. After you kill a Strider SAVE. After you clean-up the Hunters SAVE. If you screw-up and empty the Rocket Launcher and then switch weapons (DOH) you just have to reload the most recent save.

So, How did you do it?

OK. Back to the game and the map.
- Before you drive the car outside of the Silo SAVE - Note the date & time of this save. Never overwrite this one in case you need to restart the whole thing. You don't want to replay the whole chapter just to get back to this point!!! All future SAVEs in my description are implied so I’m not going to call them out. Don’t forget!
- The video by mactiddy (below) is very helpful to take out the first 2 Striders, but the video stops after #4-slow.
- Drive to the Saw Mill and take out #1-slow and #2-FAST just like the video does.
- REMEMBER to refill the Car’s MD before you drive to the next Strider…
- Drive East then South to chase down #3-slow south of the Water Tower.
- Drive North then West past the Saw Mill towards #4-slow at the Cranes.
- Drive East back to the Saw Mill and take out #5-slow.

Here is where I deviated from the other solutions

- By now you should have had warnings about #6-slow and #7-FAST.
- IGNORE the warning about #7-FAST coming in from the cranes. Let him just go to the building and wait. He won’t destroy the building unless you’ve peeked at it since he started walking.
- From the Saw Mill drive East then South and chase down #6-slow from the Water Tower.
- Now we’ll go back and get #7-FAST who has been patiently waiting to die at his building South of the Cranes. While driving there, you need to avoid looking at the building. So… from the Water Tower building drive North-East towards the Water Tower, then West past the Saw Mill, to the Cranes then South-West. Drive through the trees and stick to the rocks on the left. Park behind the large boulders before you get to the Crane building. You’ve already been saving often (right?) and this is another good spot to save. You can peek around the rocks and see the Strider just sitting there.

Can I peek at the building?

- IMPORTANT Don’t look at the building unless you want to see what happens. In that case, look at the building and note how quickly the Strider destroys it. Then just reload the last save point when you're ready.
- Use the Rocket Launcher to draw out and kill all the Hunters hanging around. Shoot them while looking away from the building. When done, grab the Magnusson Device from the car, peek around the rock just enough to see the Strider, then aim, shoot and kill. You gotta be fast because he’s going to shoot the building soon after you stick him with the MD.

Only one Fast Strider left!

- Don’t bother reloading the car with another Magnusson Device from the building you just saved. Just get in the car and drive FAST South then East to the building South of the Water Tower. You’re going there to kill the #8-FAST Strider. Cut through the trees to save time. Park in front of the Water Tower building. Run inside and get a Magnusson Device and then walk North/East towards the Water Tower. Strider #8-FAST will come from the tower and get to you before his Hunters. Proceed to kill him and then clean up the Hunters.

WOW It Worked !!!

- EXCELLENT, the last 5 Striders are easy to kill because they are all slow.
- Drive over to the Cranes (after refilling Magnusson Device on the car) kill the Hunters with rockets, then MD Strider #9-slow.
- Back to the Saw Mill for #10-slow
- Over to the Water Tower for #11-slow
- Saw Mill for #12-slow
- Chase down #13-slow who by now is probably half way to the silo.

DONE

And congratulations !!!

You may want to add that changing the control scheme, or at least the RB button, is necessary for the cheats to work. And of course that walking while entering a cheat voids it. Otherwise, great solution!

Thanks for the map. Took me while to be familiar with the surrounding and realize what is what.

I did it all on foot though :) Killed all fast stryders with Magnusson balls and the rest stryders and hunters with rockets. I basically killed stryder 1, 2 (fast), 3, 4, 5, ran to kill 7 (fast), 8 (fast), then camped back at base to kill the remaining stryders (6, 9, 10, 11, 12) with Magnusson balls. There are 3 small houses with Magnusson balls at the base

What a guide! Crystal clear and complete! Great work here dude!
Can I add you don't need to remap any key. Both invicibility and ammo reload work with default settings. For ammo reload be sure to start the sequence with your gravity gun equiped.

A simpler solution than this exists. If you listen to the developer commentary, they explain how they want the player to experience all of the cool stuff in the game, and therefore no buildings blow up unless the player can witness the destruction. Basically, save frequently, and use angles of sight to your advantage.

This works, I had trouble with one of the earlier striders destroying a building the second I saw it, so I crept round a different way so that I could only see the Strider and none of the building, took out the Hunters first, then killed it. Building left intact.

It says you can't earn achievements when in commentary mode, though? Does this actually work?

And if so, can you detail a little more how you went about it, exactly? Great solution, though. Way to think outside the box.

Hey Mulletguy, wish I could explain more, but I've only done this once and have no current desire to run it through again. I would recommend following one of the other guides, and using this as a little bit of supplemental knowledge to give you a serious advantage.

Unfortunately, achievements can not be earned in Dev Commentary. I was just giving some advice to help tilt the actual fights in your favor.

I'd recommend putting a large landmark such as a rock or hill between you and the building that is going to be destroyed. If you are having problems taking out the striders try alternating between magnusson and pistol quickly by pressing RB while the device is in the air. Of course don't forget to use the energy balls, rockets, and logs to your advantage when you are being overrun by hunters.

Good luck!

Oh right, sorry - I totally misunderstood.

I thought you meant that if you listened to the developer commentary while playing it'd make it somehow easier. I was clearly having a slow day when I posted the first time.

Thanks for the tips man, hope I can pull this one off.

Using everyone's tips I just (just) managed to get this nasty achievement. I'm still shaking! Some little things that might help: Make a spare save with your car parked out front of the sawmill where your squad members show you the map. Stay out front of the saw mill (on foot with your rocket launcher). When you've taken down the first strider that comes from the crane area, even though the game autosaves for you, make a new spare save game. It also helps to note down the time you make each save and which strider you have just killed. The second strider is so fast, I found that the sawmill would be obliterated even though I was so close to it. However, for some weird reason, the second strider got stuck behind a pile of rocks that it usually takes it's firing position at, and I only had this happen after reloading my second save for the 20th time. It was thankfully easier to take down when it was stuck. Striders #3 - #6 are fairly painless if you keep using the ammo cheat.
Strider #7 is the beastie, and I had massive troubles until I read ConsPyre & Vinicius Menti's tips about line-of-sight and walking backwards. Once you take down #6, jump in the car, head to the sawmill and grab another Magnusson Device. Drive up to but not past the cranes. Do not look south towards the missile silo either, as this is where you need to walk backwards towards Strider #7. I had problems trying to gravgun carry the Magnusson down to the strider as the hunters would keep shooting it with flechettes, so I ended up having to kill any hunters in the area of Strider #7. Once that was done, I returned to the car for the Magnusson and made another spare savegame. Reason being that as soon as you walk backwards and attack the strider from below it's belly, it will instantly power up it's cannon and turn the building it's standing next to into matchsticks. You have to be very quick with the Magnusson (then pistol) to blow it up, there is no time to use the rocket launcher. I'm not as good as some of the players here and it took me perhaps 6 or 7 attempts to kill this strider in this fashion.
For some reason at this point the game didn't immediately warn about Strider #8, so I headed back to the sawmill for another Magnusson and made another quick savegame. This one is important also as you need to drive directly south and then east from the saw mill quickly to beat the fast Strider heading towards the large building south of the water tower. You should be able to get there in time to jump out, then gravgun the Magnusson at Strider #8. Once you have got #8, it's thankfully easier from then on.
Drive back to the saw mill, grab a Magnusson if you feel like it. I made another spare save at this point as the next batch of striders in flown in to the north. From this point it's fairly easy to use rockets on each of the last five striders.
What a day, 'Little Rocket Man' & 'Neighbourhood Watch'. Can't believe it's taken me three years to get around to finally doing them and all thanks to this awesome site and the good people who post solutions. Happy New Year!

This totally saved me against Strider 7. I walked backwards towards the building and took out the 2 hunters and then went and got another Magnussen device and walked backwards again until I could take the Strider out, which gave me plenty of time and kept Strider 7 from blowing up the supply building.

Works really well ! This seriously saved me for strider 2 and 7. The striders do not charge up their shots until you look at them and/or the building waiting to be destructed. For #7, I kept going backward, killing hunters who would come in front of me. and eventually, with all hunters down, I walked backward toward the strider and eventually I found myself just under it, making it really easy to put the Magnusson device and firing it.
Geez, Even with invincibility cheat and unlimited ammo, I had to reload quite a lot to finally get it.
Congrats to anyone doing it without cheats... seriously.

I can confirm that this does not seem to work anymore, I just had a few tries and all got destroyed. However, there is a break between the 2nd and 3rd fast strider.
Take out the 1st strider from the saw mill with the rocket launcher, then the first fast strider with a magnusson. reload the magunssons and continue.
Take out the 2nd fast strider with a magnusson (drive ahead of it when you kill the regular strider before it) and refill at that building. Then you can take out the 3rd fast strider with a magnusson as well and the rest is very easy with unlimited rockets.

Did the exact same thing as Kirkless.
Had 1 where the strider was already at the building and as soon as I looked in that direction, it would destroy the building. Backed up to it to take out the hunters first, then the strider.
It should be noted that by doing it this way, if the strider is already poised to take out the building, it won't shoot at you. So if you aren't using the invincibility cheat, you won't need to worry about it.
Excellent solution.

Taking everyone else's solutions into account, I think I have a fairly simple method to get this achievement. Refer to these codes in the solution.

Turn on invincibility: Left Bumper, Up, Right Bumper, Up, Left Bumper, Left Bumper, Up, Right Bumper, Right Bumper, Up.

Full ammo: Y, B, A, X, Right Bumper, Y, X, A, B, Right Bumper.

At the start of the offensive, enter the invincibility cheat. Then pause, go to controls then keep going down to gravity gun and press (X) to clear the gravity gun shortcut button. Now, you can kill all the striders with rockets and use the ammo code to refill the rocket count. You will need to have the rocket selected to refill its ammo, hence why we are re-signing RB because it switches to the gravity gun otherwise. Do not switch away from the rockets at any time.

So, pay close attention to the top solution, the fast moving striders are the ones to really watch out for, you have to be fast when taking them down, very fast. So take out the first one on cranes, getting to know how to use the code often, it takes 4-5 rockets for a strider to go down. So use the code fast whenever you are out of rockets. Don't switch weapons while the rocket count is empty otherwise you can't refill the ammo because it has to be selected

When the second one appears at the sawmill, race over and take it out fast, might be better to use the bomb for this one only because you don't have time to fire all the rockets at it. Don't worry about taking out the hunters, they can't take down buildings and they can't kill you.

After that, keep going from place to place, using rockets to fell the striders and refilling ammo whenever you are out. Use the top solution for a guide about whether they are fast walking and where they are coming from. Prioritise the fast moving ones first and save frequently. There are only three fast moving ones, the other two are next to each other so you have to be quick when entering the code and firing the rockets. After that, its easy, you won't struggle with the slow moving one's.

Good Luck guys!

Use the previously posted guide/video as a reference but what made it much easier was saving between every Strider. That way if I screwed up (and it happened alot), I could just re-start from where I was, not from the beginning.

(Y B A X RB Y X A B RB)
Like ConsPyre said, if you don't see the building, it wont get destroyed. I would drive to the first few as they show up and destroy them with either the rocket launcher or the sticky bomb. When the fast one that comes from the cranes comes, I avoid going that direction. I head back to the base, put a bomb on my car, then reverse towards that strider. You can stop far enough away to see the building without him destroying it. Take out the hunters from a distance with the rocket launcher. Remember to only shoot 2 rockets, and then enter the cheat. After the hunters are dead, grab the sticky bomb and walk in reverse towards the Strider. I just stick to the right side of the road. You'll find yourself under him eventually. SAVE! Now once you look up at him, he'll prepare to fire. You gotta stick him, and shoot him before he does. That works for any Striders that stay at a building.
My main strategy is to just sit at the main base and wait. The striders should eventually come that way. When the alarm goes off, blast them with the rockets. When I did this, all but 2 came to the main base. Those were the ones I did the thing where you walk under them backwards.
Save often.

I wanted to make my own solution for the simple reason that all of the other solutions on here only have part 1 of the video guides and the other parts are no longer linked/available.
So if you want to watch a complete video guide check out my video I have included uploaded by 'BadgeHuntersAnon'.

I simply followed the video saving multiple times after each Strider. It is from the PC version but it makes no difference.

One point of note however, I must of been falling behind the video because the Strider that is heading toward the base at 8.00-8.10 I bypassed and went straight for the Strider 8.25-8.32 instead as every time I did it the way in the video the 8.25 Strider would destroy the building as soon as I got there. Then after that one I went back to the 8.00 Strider. Don't worry to much about any Hunters you leave behind if you kill the Strider without killing them as at this point you get a 1 minute break before the final waves happen.

All in all it took me about 2 hours of watching-playing-saving-reloading etc.

Also one more tip, put subtitles on so that you know when they might have destroyed a building as they will say things like 'a Strider is coming at what 'used' to be the saw mill' meaning they blew it up and you didn't notice. so if they don't say 'used to be' when they announce the attacks you know you are good.

I didn't bother with the ammo cheat as using logs was quicker in my opinion when killing Hunters.

I did however use the invincibility cheat which for those of you who don't know is pause the game and press:
LB, UP, RB, UP, LB, LB, UP, RB, RB, UP

This was my last achievement to get for 100% Orange Box so its fitting in a way that I made this guide to honor that achievement. 100% is very do-able, the hardest by far was the Gold medals on Portal, but cheats can be used for that also that help but its still very hard. Just stick with it and 100% can be yours too.

I hope this guide is of some help for you all.

This is harder than just killing the striders. You must make sure you keep up and dont mess around cause the striders will destroy the building.

Strider 1: From Cranes, slow walking.
Strider 2: From Sawmill, fast walking and will destroy the Sawmill if you
aren't quick.
Strider 3: From Water Tower, slow walking.
Strider 4: Cranes, slow walking.
Strider 5: Sawmill, slow walking.
Strider 6: Water Tower, Slow walking.
Strider 7: Cranes, fast walking, heads to building to south of Cranes.
Strider 8: Water Tower, fast walking, heads to the building to south of the
Water Tower.
Short Break, stock up on supplies.
Strider 9: Cranes, slow walking.
Strider 10: Sawmill, slow walking.
Strider 11: Water Tower, slow walking.
Strider 12: Sawmill, slow walking.
Strider 13: Cranes, slow walking.
