How to unlock the Monarch Abides achievement in The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition - Definitive Guide

This missable achievement is unlocked when, during the faction quest, Canid’s Cradle, you side with one faction and defeat the other by killing its leader. You can side with either faction and the achievement pops when you defeat the opposing faction. Note that you do not need to accept this faction quest. If you do, you are not obligated to side with a faction. In fact, if you decline to do so, and broker peace instead, you will unlock the mutually exclusive:

Although this achievement and Peace in our Time are mutually exclusive, you can make a save before the deciding point. After you unlock the first achievement, you can load the save and pop the other.

The game plays differently depending on how you respond to a decision on Groundbreaker. If you decline to turn Phineas in to the Board, you embark on the Phineas path. If you report him to the Board, you embark on the Halcyon path. During Radio Free Monarch (Phineas Path) or Signal Point in Space (Halcyon path), you persuade the two factions in conflict to stop their broadcasts and unlock:

Immediately following that, the faction quest, Canid’s Cradle becomes available. If you choose to accept the quest (you are not obliged to), you recover a targeting module sought after by both factions. Once the targeting module comes in to your possession, two mutually exclusive courses of action become available. Each results in an achievement. If you want to get both in the same playthrough, make a save once you gain custody of the module.

If you want to get the good ending in the game, work towards this achievement first. It is associated with the bad ending and you will discard all actions leading to it once you load the save you made.

Give the targeting module to one of the factions—either Sanjar with MSI in Stellar Bay or the leader of the Iconoclasts in Amber Heights. This instigates hostilities with the other faction. Follow the quest marker and kill the leader of the opposing faction. The achievement will pop. If you want to get Peace in Our Time, load the save you made after you acquired the module.
