How to unlock the Silver Tongue achievement in The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition - Definitive Guide
This achievement is unlocked when you pass your 30th speech check during conversations. A speech check is presented when a conversational choice is preceded by square brackets enclosing a skill followed by a numerical value. The player-characters skill, after bonuses and deficits are applied, must match or exceed the numerical value in order to pass the speech check.
The dialog skill may be conversational in nature--persuade, lie, intimidate. It may also be a technical skill--engineering, medicine, or engineering. You will know you have used a dialog skill that qualifies for the achievement if, after the conversational choice, you are rewarded with a small amount of experience depicted on the right hand side of the screen with audio cue.
If you can select the dialog option with the speech check, you will automatically pass it. If your player-character's skill is too low, a lock is shown to the left of the square bracket entry and the entry, itself, is greyed out. Note that the player-character's skill can be adjusted by a number of factors. Some consumables increase skills. Others decrease skills. Some clothing, armor, & helmets boost skills.
Companions may boost skills. The first companion, Parvati, for example, boosts persuasion, engineering, and lockpick. If an active companion is wearing clothing that boosts skills, the player-character's skills will also be increased. Sometimes, it is of value to back out of a conversation, imbibe an appropriate consumable &/or equip beneficial items, and return to the conversation with skills adjusted high enough to pass the speech check.
To monitor this achievement's progress, turn on the Series S|X achievement tracker. To increase the precedence on the list of tracked achievements, designate this one as a favorite.
There are hundreds of speech checks throughout the game. Accordingly, the achievement should unlock fairly early during normal gameplay.
The game's system save file keeps track of each successful use of a dialog skill. So every speech check passed counts even when you reload an earlier save file. If you want to grind the achievement early, an easy location is right inside Edgewater's main gate--the first town you encounter in the game. The General Store, Cantina, and the Constabulary are close to one another.
Enter the main gate to make an auto-save and go to each of those three locations. There are consumables on the counter in the General Store, a weapon & other items near the barkeep in the Cantina, and two boxes of energy cells on a small door immediately to your left as you enter the Constabulary.
Stealing one at each location will prompt the vendor, the barkeep, or Constable Reyes to confront you and ask, "What do you think you're doing?" The answers include three speech checks along these lines:
For your convenience, use the console's tracking feature to monitor progress toward the achievement. Once you have the achievement, make sure to load the auto-save made before the theft. Otherwise, even though you passed the speech check, your reputation will suffer.
Note that, in this example, the numerical value of the check increases as your level elevates. It will be 5 at level 1 or 2 but will be greater if you attempt to steal in the town of Edgewater when you are at a higher level.
