How to unlock the Basketcase achievement in The Sims 4 - Definitive Guide
The "primary emotional states" are as follows, along with the way and order in which I toggled them so that they were gone quickly enough:
Fine - Wake up after sleeping to clear out other emotions in a room with nothing inside (and no negative moodlets from neglected needs)
Happy - Any "decor" without any other moodlets
Confident - Emotion painting
Playful - Emotion painting
Flirty - Emotion painting
Angry - Emotion painting
Sad - Emotion painting
Focused - Math diagram painting
Inspired - Framed Book object
Tense - Low "Fun" need (can easily be gotten by choosing to work hard at work, too, but then you've got to go to work, which eats up time)
Uncomfortable - Low "Bladder" need (should also work with Hunger, Energy, or Hygiene)
Bored - Use same conversation option three times in a row
Embarrassed - Get rejected for a romantic conversation option
Energized - Drink coffee
Dazed - Drink more coffee
Asleep - Go to sleep. Yep. You need to do this. I actually had to do it at the start and end of the set of emotions.
And now, more detail for those who are interested:
Secondary emotional states are the "very" versions of these, and they appear to count just the same as the primaries. (For example, if you skipped straight to "Very Playful", it appears to count the same as "Playful".)
If you're not already familiar with sims' emotional states, you can find them in the lower left of the screen and you'll often have multiples at once. For an emotional state to count in this list, it has to be the active emotional state; in other words, the one with the highest count, and which you currently see the words for. So if you've got Happy+1 and Tense+2 and Flirty+2, but you only see Flirty displayed, that only counts as "Flirty".
Because of this, the best way to get through all of the emotional states in one 24 hour period is to use tools with emotional states embedded into them so that you can turn them on and off again. The best way that I've found to do this is with paintings, when possible, or with rewards from other skills and jobs.
I'm going to detail how I got this one, but there are many other ways to pick up individual emotions. Many of them can be enabled in other ways, like taking a steamy shower for Flirty, but then you've got that emotion on you for hours of game time, and some can be tough to shake off. If you haven't seen Carl's Sims Guide, I very strongly recommend it. It has a big list of emotional states and details many of the other ways to get into other emotional states. http://www.carls-sims-4-guide.com/emotions/
A caution about potions: You can purchase emotion potions with aspiration points for some of the emotions, but they tend to stick around for quite a while. If you're going to go this route, try to make sure you don't use the potion until it's one of the last so you don't get stuck with that emotion longer than you want it.
What I did first was to get the Painter Extraordinaire aspiration. Painting's relatively easy to level compared to some of the other skills, and can be very profitable, which makes it appealing. If you get your sim feeling Confident, Playful, Flirty, Angry, or Sad, you can make a painting that, when enabled, will cause that aura to come out of it. If you've got the Painter Extraordinaire aspiration reward, you can paint all five of those even if your sim isn't feeling that way. (Also, if you have someone who's also got a bit of Logic and is Focused, you can paint a mathematical diagram for that.)
So of the 16 emotional states, painting can get you 6 of them that you can toggle on and off. Two more - Asleep and Fine - just happen naturally under the right circumstances.
Once I had all of the paintings and other goodies, I built a private room in my house with nothing but those items, so that there wouldn't be any other emotions. The house had some "decor" items, but I had my sim sleep in a bed in a room with nothing else inside. I made sure that all basic needs EXCEPT Fun were well satisfied.
I then sent my sim to bed and slept until all emotions were gone. On waking, my sim was "Fine", so I walked him into the next room where I had some pretty decor to get "Happy".
From there, I took him up to the room with the stuff. I toggled the emotional state by selecting each of the paintings to turn it on, waited for my sim to change emotions, then turned the emotional state for that painting back off. That took care of Confident, Playful, Flirty, Angry, Sad, and Focused. I then did the same with the Framed Book from the Writer career to get Inspired.
By luck, as soon as I turned that one off, my "Fun" was low enough that my sim just slipped into Tense, so I went and watched TV for a bit to get it back up. Doing that lowered Bladder enough for Uncomfortable. After that, I went inside and brewed some coffee and drank it for Energized... and then drank again for Dazed.
I then found another random Sim and immediately repeated the "Get to Know" social option three times to get Bored, and then tried to "Hold Hands" with a stranger. Upon getting rejected, Embarrassed took over (since it was higher). Interestingly, I then had to go back to sleep again. As soon as I got Asleep for the second time, the cheevo dinged.
Lots of text, but I hope that helps folks who are struggling to get to the bottom of this one!
Select New Game (Dismiss Tutorial if this comes up).
Scroll right and select 'Open the Gallery'.
Search for 'Basketcase Family +' and download the family made by 'Misier'.
Select 'Place Household' and choose Replace. After this go to the bottom right and press 'Play'.
Next choose 'Willow Creek' & then 'Streamlet Single'. Press confirm to load up the map.
Finally press the Ultra Speed button and the achievement should pop within a few minutes.
Also unlocks:
For me, the hardest part of this achievement was getting out of the emotions to start on the next one. I will run through how I earned the achievement.
Ensure that you do not have any traits equipped that stop you getting embarrassed (Traits.remove_trait Shameless), stop your bladder meter depleting (Traits.remove_trait SteelBladder) or getting Tense (Traits.remove_trait CareFree).
The only prep I needed was to have a completely empty room (for winding down some emotions), and a "sad" painting. For the sad painting, have a sim donate money to a fake charity on the computer (it is usually one with an outrageous name like Dinosaur Trust Fund) and once that sim is sad, paint a sad painting to capture the emotion. Disabling autonomy in the game options is also highly recommended.
The Achievement
Tense
We'll start off the first one with getting Tense. Let your fun meter deplete to the point where your sim is Tense. For this and the majority of the emotions, keep an eye on the bottom left corner, as soon as the sim becomes tense, go to a computer to play video games. Your 24 hours will start as soon as the sim becomes tense so keep an eye on the in-game clock. It's also really helpful to pause whenever transitioning to something else, as it is 24 in-game hours that count.
Happy or Fine
Your sim will now most likely be happy or fine. Your sim will naturally become happy in a nicely decorated room. Or for fine, go to the empty room I suggested you should prep for.
Asleep
Asleep is an easy emotion to check off, simply go to bed to sleep, wait a few seconds and wake up.
Playful
Go to a bathroom for these next few emotions. For playful, go for a bubble bath. Once the sim is playful, exit the bath and go to a mirror and select the option "Try to calm down" which should have a pink mark next to it. When your sim becomes neutral again, move on. (You can select this option as many times as you need to calm down).
Inspired
Still in the bathroom, these next 2 emotions you can't really remove manually, so you will have to wait a little while to remove. For inspired, take a thoughtful shower. And then wait a round 1 in-game hour before moving onto the next emotion.
Confident
Go to your bathroom sink and brush your teeth to get confident. Again though, to remove this emotion you will have to wait a little while.
Flirty
Next we go for flirty, simply have a steamy shower to get flirty. And to remove, go back to the shower and select "have a cold shower" which should cool you down after a few showers.
Embarrassed
To prepare for this one, leave your sim in the bathroom, then have another sim on "standby" outside of the bathroom. With your emotion sim, have it take a bath, switch to the standby sim and walk in on the sim taking a bath, you may have to walk in multiple times to make your emotion sim embarrassed. To get out of this emotion, you need to select the social interactions on other sims with yellow tags next to them (Self deprecating jokes, ask for confidence etc.)
Angry
Keep the standby sim at hand, switch to it, and then interact with your emotion sim with 2/3 mean interactions, this will get your emotion sim angry. You need to take cool showers with your sim to remove anger (same as with flirty).
Sad
Once your sim is neutral again, we need to go and view the sad painting that we prepped for. Go and view this painting to become sad. The sad emotion will not last very long but to reduce the time we can watch comedy on the TV.
Bored
For this one, simply have the same social interaction with another sim 3 times in a row. For example I picked "ask about day" 3 times to get bored.
Energised
To get energised, simply drink a cup of coffee.
Dazed
Ensure your sim becomes Energised before attempting this as you can miss energised completely by having more coffee. But once your sim does become energised, drink more coffee cups to become dazed.
Uncomfortable
You may have had this one pop up anyway, but after drinking cups of coffee your sim will become uncomfortable from low bladder. Simply go to the toilet to remove.
Focused
I left focused until last because I found that it was the hardest emotion to come out of. To get focused you simply need to play chess. Go play chess and this achievement should be yours!
I made this achievement solution to reiterate that getting out of an emotion is more important that getting into one, as the 24 hours to do this is not long. I had about 6 hours to spare doing this method, however my sim did not go to work and also has traits that don't deplete Sleep, Hunger, Hygiene and Social needs. Your sim will need the entire uninterrupted day to go for this.
If you go to 0:24 of his video and follow along you will download all 9 saves from his tag you will get ALL the achievements from this game. After downloading all 9 worlds you will start a new game, skip tutorial (Select dont ask me again), and open gallery. Hit over to "My library" select "Basket case+", head down to bottom right to place household, replace, select yes, and then hit play. Once loaded select "Willow Creek", from there select "Streamlet Single" confirm and then play. As you've loaded in you WILL unlock the Basketcase achievement and as you're fast-forwarding you will also unlock "Introvert", "The Most Interesting Sim in the World", "All Nighter", "Beyond Repairs", "Games Within Games", and "Cast Away"!

This is one of the more tedious trophies to earn in the game; however, with the right preparation it can be made a far less stressful feat. There are a total of 16 primary emotional states which you’ll need your Sim experience within 24 Sim hours. These emotions are as follows:
- Asleep
- Angry
- Bored
- Confident
- Dazed
- Embarrassed
- Energized
- Fine
- Happy
- Inspired
- Flirty
- Focused
- Playful
- Sad
- Tense
- Uncomfortable
The very first thing you’ll want to do before attempting this trophy is to go into your Game Settings, Gameplay and switch “Autonomy” to “Off”. This is to prevent your Sim from doing anything automatically which may hinder your moodlet routine. With this switched off he/she will instead remain idle until you select an action for them to undertake.
Make sure your Sim also has the Loner trait when you first create them. It’s also recommended you have the Steel Bladder, Forever Full, Forever Fresh and Never Weary traits. You can either buy these traits or use their respective unlock codes. Now you’ll need to set up a few factors that will make going through all of these emotional states fairly straight forward.
You will firstly need to have completed the Painter Extraordinaire Aspiration so that you have the Expressionistic trait, or alternatively use the trait unlock code. This trait will allow you to paint the 6 Emotional Aura paintings that will be in Room 1. You will need your Sim to be Focused in order for the Mathematical Diagram to appear on the easel options.
You’ll next want to make sure you have a Sim in your “Relationships” tab that has an empty friendship bar, as you’ll need to invite them over to your house. If you have no Sim friends, head outside to find a stranger and initiate a friendly introduction to befriend them.
You’ll now want to bake a White Cake then leave it on the counter in Room 3, it’ll become spoiled in around 10 Sim hours.
Lastly, make sure your “Fun” need has declined to around halfway when it turns yellow. This is for timing purposes.
Here is a breakdown of how you want your house set up:
Main Area: Bed
Room 1: 6 Emotional Aura paintings. This will cover Flirty, Focused, Angry, Sad, Confident and Playful.
Room 2: Study of the Human Form (unlocked for reaching Level 3 Painter Career) and the You’ve Got Talent Award (unlocked for reaching Level 6 Entertainer/Comedian Career).
Room 3: White Cake (spoilt) left on the counter and The Schmapple Coffee
Room 4: TV
Once you have all of this set up and ready to go, make a save just before you start in case any mistakes are made so that you can retry if necessary. The steps to follow are below:
STEP 1:
Main Area - Go to sleep to activate Asleep and stay asleep until you’ve cleared any remaining moodlets that may have been present. With your Sim having the Loner trait, you’ll also become Happy from “Enjoying Solitude” once you’re awake. (2 complete)
STEP 2:
Room 1 - You’ll now want to head into Room 1 by clicking on the ground and selecting “Go Here” so you’re just standing there, as you aren’t actually going to be viewing the paintings. Now select one painting at a time and “Enable Emotional Aura”. Your Sim will acquire the moodlet of the painting very promptly, when this happens you can then select the painting again and “Disable Emotional Aura”. Doing so will wipe that moodlet from you. Rinse and repeat this with the other 5 paintings. The 6 paintings in this room will have gotten you the Flirty, Focused, Angry, Sad, Confident and Playful moodlets. (8 complete)
STEP 3:
Room 2 - Once you’ve wiped your final moodlet from the paintings, head into Room 2. You will be doing the same thing with these objects as you did the paintings, enabling their Emotional Aura one at a time. Study of the Human Form will make you Inspired and the You’ve Got Talent Award will make you Energized. If you haven’t got this award you’ll become Energized again from drinking coffee in the later steps, however it will be a timed moodlet.(10 complete)
STEP 4:
Room 3 - Now you’ll want to head into Room 3. “Take a Piece” of the spoiled cake to become Uncomfortable (or Very), this moodlet is timed but won’t last very long until it expires. After you’ve eaten a slice of the cake, you’ll want to then use the coffee machine on the counter to “Brew Coffee” then “Grab a Drink” once it’s done. You’ll need to drink between 2-3 cups of coffee to become Dazed, which will result in another timed moodlet. You’ll also become Energized beforehand, if you haven’t already triggered this emotional state from the YGT Award. Take a nap whilst Dazed to run the time down on the moodlet. (12 complete)
STEP 5:
Room 4 - At this stage, your “Fun” bar under the needs section should be pretty close to making your Sim become Tense. It’s generally around the 1/4 mark this will happen. Depending on how fast you completed the previous steps, you may have to wait a short while until it kicks in. Once this happens, go and watch TV to reduce and eventually clear this moodlet. (13 complete)
STEP 6:
Sim Friend - For the final step you will want to head into your Relationships tab and select a Sim you’ve an empty friendship bar with and “Invite to Hangout at Current Lot”. When they arrive, you’ll want to repeat the same conversations with them 3-4 times. An example after you’ve selected them would be More Choices, Friendly, More Choices and Discuss Color Theory. Repeat this same choice until you become Bored. This moodlet is another one which is timed so you’ll need it cleared or at least the majority of the timer wiped so that you can acquire the final moodlet. You can run the timer down by taking a nap in bed. After taking a nap, you’ll want to select your same Sim friend (or re-invite them over if they left) and select More Choices, Romance and Embrace. Having an empty friendship bar will generally create an “Awkward Encounter” and thus make you become Embarrassed. Finally, you’ll want to go back to bed and sleep to clear all moodlets. This will make your Sim wake up Fine, though it is likely you’ll have activated this emotional state when following the earlier steps. (16 complete)
