How to unlock the Something to Prove achievement in Thief - Definitive Guide

When you start a new game, it will ask you which difficulty you want, choose Custom.
I'm currently doing this on Master difficulty with custom settings. There are some custom settings that actually make this a bit easier I think. Your custom settings have to total 700 points or more for this achievement to unlock at the end.
My custom settings are as follows:

Chapter Saves Only (Manual saves disabled) - 180 points : OFF
No Focus (Focus ability disabled) - 50 points : ON
Stealth Takedowns Only (You cannot perform combat takedowns) - 50 points : ON
No Reticle (Reticle disabled for aiming) - 30 points : ON
Speciality Arrows Only (Only Blunt, Water, Fire and Rope Arrows enabled) - 50 points : ON
No Food or Poppies (Food and Poppies are not consumable) - 100 points: ON
Zero Damage (If you take any damage, you fail the mission) - 60 points : ON
Expensive Resources (Cost of resources are increased) - 70 points : ON
Slowed Movement (Overall movement is slowed) - 45 points : OFF
Iron Man (If you die or fail a mission, you lose your entire game and have to restart from the beginning) -250 points: OFF
No Upgrades (Non-critical tools, gear upgrades, and trinkets are disabled) - 100 points : OFF
No Kills or Knockouts (If human/animal is harmed in any way, mission fails) -170 points : ON
No Alerts (If human/animal detects you, mission fails) - 145 points : ON

Total: 725 points

With these custom settings activated, you obviously have no focus to use, no reticle, etc. But I feel like these settings actually kind of make this playthrough a bit easier. There is no wondering if you've been spotted or have alerted anyone, because if you have, the mission automatically fails and you restart at a checkpoint.

This is going to come in handy, especially going for:

You will also in the course of things, end up with the following achievements, because you have no focus and cannot knockout anyone without failing the mission:

It has been noted to me that you can only reach the 700 or more points if you play on Master difficulty to begin with, so you will also get: (Credit/Confirmed By: PuckJunkie)

You should also note that, failing a mission because you are detected or break one of those custom settings, will only fail and give you the option to start from your last checkpoint. It will have no overall effect on your Ghost status for that mission. I actually failed a few times on the second chapter, restarted from the checkpoint and finished the chapter, to find that my Ghost status was still there and I had not been detected.

Nice! I can, thank God, confirm that playing on a custom difficulty with Master as base does unlock both achievements. I don't know about you, I was worried it wouldn't technically count as Master, and my second run would also be on Master. Fortunately not.

Please help. I'm on chapter 6,escaping through fire and flames,just jumped across two ropes,one with a man hanging from it,and I'm inside a building where a section of it falls down and then there is a spouting flame that switches on and off. But while I'm waiting for it to turn off,I die to smoke every time?

To be a little more specific, in regards to the part Cookie was stuck on: After you crouch through and see the crank, IGNORE it and run right through the hole in the wall past the flames. I was stuck here myself until I figured it out. It's a very vague part and more than a little confusing.

Question. I'm about to start this game and I was wondering if you have to play for these achievements from a new game only or can you replay the game on the same save with these settings and still get both this and the Master difficulty achievement?

Haven't been able to test this yet as I did this right from the beginning on a new save. I don't believe you can just change the difficulty setting and redo it, but I'm not 100% sure. If anyone can confirm this, I will update.

Daradarka, if you don't know already, the game had a bug causing some saves between March 30th and April 2nd became temporarily corrupted because of the time stamps on the saves. Personally I could not leave the clock tower, every time I tried to load another district it would revert to my last save. I heard other complaints about after completing a mission the mission would just restart. Everything should be ok now that it is past April 2nd.

Used this and got about 4-5 achievements upon finishing, all i can suggest is getting the tools and keeping atleast 3 rope, a handful of blunt and a lot of water arrows helps, especially in the later levels.

In the last 2-3 chapters i only ever got caught out by fires i could have put out before hand.

Cheers for the list of what to put on and off aswell.

Finished chapter 4.. Suspicions raised 1.. Times detected 0, but it says opportunist rather than ghost.. Does that mean i have to replay the level or can i keep going?

You must play on Master difficulty in order to get this achievement. You can't get to 700 points if you use "Thief" difficulty, as it cuts the point rewards in half - you max out at 650 with all modifiers enabled. "Rogue" difficulty is even worse.

I only mention this because when you say:
If you do it like me and set the overall difficulty to Master, you will also unlock...
it implies you could use another difficulty level.

I'm playing with the same settings you are. The way the points are distributed, there only other other viable candidate for easiest combination of settings is to swap slow movement out for expensive equipment. The key is to leave Iron Man and Chapter Saves Only off, IMO. The ability to save at any point really reduces the difficulty quite a bit.

you just need to hid in the shadows and you should be ok The boss cant hurt you in the Dark. I have a question for you all if any one ells has been having this problem please let me know on chapter 7 i have finished it 4 times now and everytime i get out on there and the complete screen comes up tells me i got ghost it goes to the loading screen and just starts me coming out of the tunnel again at the beginning of chapter 7 ???? any solution to this or and one ells having this problem ??

Through the play through I think I used about 6-8 water arrows, 6-8 blunt arrows and 1 rope arrow (Chapter 8)

Chapter 4 Smoke area is pretty simple as long as I know where you are going as soon as you step foot in the room. Do not hesitate and you should be fine as long as you go straight from the first valve to the second as quickly as possible.

The general in Chapter 7 took a few goes but eventually I did it by first going left to the valve, dashing to the second and opening it whilst hoping he wouldn't shoot arrows my way. About 2 out of 5 tries he did this. Once the valves were open I shot a water arrow at the torch next to the locked door, then threw a bottle toward the opposite end of the room to keep him occupied. Then staying as calmly as possible I picked the door and went on my way.

All I can say is save as much as possible!

First of all, I'd do a playthrough on an easier difficulty first to get a lay of the land. On your first playthrough you can also focus on collectibles, using focus abilities, thieving challenges, etc.

When starting a New Game you must select the Master-Custom difficulty, selecting Thief Mods that total 700 points (minimum). Here are the mods, with my suggestions bolded:

Classic Thief Mods
Chapter Saves Only - 180pts
No Focus - 50pts
Stealth Takedowns Only - 50pts
No Reticue - 30pts

Legendary Thief Mods
Specialty Arrows Only - 50pts
No Food or Poppies - 100pts
Zero Damage - 60pts
Expensive Resources - 70pts
Slowed Movement - 45pts

Ultimate Thief Mods
Iron Man (do not in your right mind enable this) - 250pts
No Upgrades - 100pts
No Kills or Knockouts - 170pts
No Alerts - 145pts

Selecting my suggested mods will also net you:

Mint Condition (No damage in 3 consecutive missions)
Moral Victory (Finish game without a single kill or KO)
Clear Headed (Reach the last chapter without using Focus)
Hard Times (Finish the game on Master difficulty)
Child of the Shadows (Finish a single chapter without alerting anyone)

So this is going to be as close as you get to what a real Thief game should be, for those of you who played the original PC games (such as myself) you'll probably groan and be eager to try this out. I would not recommend trying this right off the bat as I cannot confirm that it will count as your master playthrough if you set the base difficult to MASTER, but I would advise someone to try it out, it couldn't hurt. First off, setting the mods, you need to have at least one ULTIMATE mod activated, as you get up to 635 points if you do everything but. I really like being able to kill people so I have mine set so that I can. The most points you can go for are 1300, but I would recommend NOT doing that unless you are really really into getting pissed off at games. Find a happy medium that is at least 700 points (or this playthrough was a waste of your time) and be careful, as if you have Iron Man on and something else, like Zero Damage, you will be very mad if you get to the end and discover that you stubbed your toe and have to start over. The mods I chose to leave off were Iron Man, No Kills or Knockouts, No Reticle, Slowed Movement and Specialty Arrows Only. That way if you mess up, you are not in so much trouble as before and your controller might live a little longer if you are prone to smashing them when angry. Hulk smash is not recommended here.

just to let you know, i just completed it with a difficulty higher than 700 and i got the trophy for completing it on master difficulty, so the answer is yes, you will get the trophy if the base difficulty is master

You must start a new game on a different save file for this and select "Custom" difficulty. Custom difficulty in Thief, at its core (such as the difficulty of the AI for example), works the same way as you if you were playing the other difficulties. The catch is however, that in addition to selecting what difficulty you want the base of your game to be, you are to select a number of handicaps to go along with your playthrough. These handicaps serves as restrictions of what you can or cannot do over the course of your game. For the purpose of this trophy, you need to pick a list of limitations of your choosing that adds up to 700 points, and beat the game with them in place.

Rogue - x0.100
Thief - x0.500
Master - x1.000

The lower the difficulty you play on, the lower the total value of your points. Therefore, you are pretty much forced to play on Master if you want the 700 points, so reduction of points doesn't take place.

List of Mods for Custom are as follows:

Classic Thief Mods

  • Chapter Saves Only - 180pts
  • No Focus - 50pts
  • Stealth Takedowns Only - 50pts
  • No Reticule - 30pts

Legendary Thief Mods

  • Specialty Arrows Only - 50pts

In fact, this achievement is not as scary as it might seem at first glance at the modifier. You can play on Master difficulty with some modifiers that will help you get some of the achievements associated with the hidden playthrough. This way you will kill two birds with one stone. You can see more information below, but first the recommended settings: Master Difficulty [x1 modifier] No kills or stuns [170] No alarm [145] No concentration [50] Silent stun only [50] No scope [30] Special arrows only [50] No food or poppy flowers [100] No damage [60] Expensive resources [70] Total = 725 Below you will find out why these modifiers were chosen. Difficulty Master - Because there is simply no other choice. Difficulty Master gives a x1 multiplier to modifiers, and other difficulties reduce this multiplier. With this difficulty it is easier to reach the required 700 points. In addition, you will be able to rejoice in receiving the “Something to Prove” achievements! and “Hard Times”, and you won’t have to go through the game again. No kills or stuns - You will want to get the “A Moral Victory” achievement on Master difficulty anyway, as this mod gives a lot of much-needed points. Don't Raise the Alarm - Although Child of the Shadows requires you to go through one chapter undetected, I recommend this modifier due to its fairly high score. Without Focus - You will have to not use Focus until the final chapter anyway to get the “Clear Headed” achievement, so using this modifier, even if you accidentally click on it, you will not be able to activate Focus. Silent Stun Only - Since we're still going to go through the game without stuns or kills to achieve “A Moral Victory,” that's an extra 50 points. No sight - If you don't need to kill anyone, then you will only aim at stationary targets. Some of them will stand out when you aim at them. With a little practice you will understand how to aim. Only special arrows - Again, you can't kill anyone, so you won't need regular arrows, and you won't have any extra points. No food or poppies - If you don't take damage (see below), then you don't need food, and if you don't use concentration, then you don't need poppies. Another 100 points for nothing. No Damage - While going through without any kills, stuns or alarms, you can only take damage from falling from a great height. If the jump seems too high for you, then you better find an alternative way down. Expensive Resources - The only items you need to buy are arrows and tools. When collecting everything valuable, you should not have any special problems. Although this passage will not be so simple, this method will allow you not to activate the “Iron Man” modifier, which disables manual saves and checkpoints. Without using this modifier, you can save at any time and if something doesn’t work out for you, you can always load and try again.

About the No Damage modifier. Just so you're prepared and know what you signed up for.

So, as it is written, you should not receive any damage (logical, right?) and in most missions it will not harm you in any way. BUT!!! There will be a few moments when you'll curse that you put it there.

I’ll try not to spoil too much and give a couple of tips: In mission 4 there will be a moment when the hero suffocates from carbon monoxide (can you guess what will happen?). Feet in hand and forward! The valve will be on the right, you can run around the first locked door and break into the second one at once; in mission 6 there will be a moment when you fall from the roof, you can get through the fire by shooting an arrow at the winch or something like it (what if I didn’t have an arrow??), you can easily get through the 2nd roof. And what does the end of mission 8 turn into with this modifier? I advise you to start with the fragment on the “1st floor”, then the one to the left of the beginning of the arena, and then by dashing around you will somehow get to the 3rd.

There will be all sorts of other bullshit like “stuck” guards. I don’t know if restarting the game or console will help, but it’s better to keep a couple of water arrows and something to distract you.

PS I’m writing after completing and deleting the game. It seems there is also a modifier No improvements (100 points), if this removes pumping or buying, for example, an enlarged quiver, then it’s probably better to put it instead of the No damage modifier. Most likely because of the modifier Without concentration, pumping was already inaccessible to me (and there is nothing particularly useful without using concentration), and there won’t be much money for arrows and other things, but see for yourself because these are just my thoughts.

There is a glitch in the game when animals shoot you three kilometers away and through walls. can be fixed by rebooting the console, just replaying saves is useless

Use modifiers as written by SpaceSystem. It took me 3 water arrows, a couple of blunt arrows and one rope arrow to get through. 2 water ones can be taken at the beginning of chapter 1. Alone in a house from which a man wanted to leave, but the guards drove him back. The second arrow behind the alley is a certificate from this house. Behind the fence lies a homeless man and an arrow next to him. The rope arrow can be taken in Chapter 7 in the place where the trap is, and in the center there is an arrow and an object. There are no difficulties until chapter 7. The main thing is to buy a wrench before the second chapter, and wire cutters before the third. But this has already been written about. To get 1000 G on a wrench, I advise you to extinguish 9 light sources in the first chapter and collect more valuables. Don't ignore the food and poppy seeds, they can be sold. The first obstacle will be in chapter 7 in the courtyard in front of the cathedral, where there are 5 illuminated ones. We take the bottle near the person sleeping on the chair and go to the left corner of the yard. We slowly walk close to the table with the birdcage. - No improvements
- Do not kill/stun
- Do not raise the alarm
Total: 710 points

Resources and arrows cost as usual
Slow movement does not interfere (dash works as usual) + you are less noticeable
You can get damaged (very important for some points)

I’ll also add that for the second playthrough you will need money for a Wrench 1000g (needed already in Chapter 2) and Wire Cutters 450g (needed in Chapter 3 and beyond), so collect as much loot as possible in Chapters 1 and 2, and then you can just run through chapters and not waste time collecting everything. You will also need Water Arrows 160g a piece, about 4, and Blunt Arrows 40g apiece , also about 4, they can be used for distraction at close range, and you can also use a regular baton strike for this. I recommend not going through the Video because... it takes extra time, but if suddenly you are faced with some difficult place, then it is better to see how to get through it. I would like to note that health is restored after each chapter, except for 7, and that you will not need anything else other than the above, if you have extra money, buy a couple of Water or Blunt arrows

Addition to the “Expensive Resources” modifier. Don't let anyone be scared by the price of arrows (some cost 800 or 600 coins):

For quick and secret passage, you will definitely need wire cutters and a wrench, which cost the same as on the normal difficulty level. There is no need to buy arrows; there are plenty of them lying around the city. For example, to complete all eight chapters I needed THREE water arrows (one before the entrance to the temple to distract the crossbowman, one in the rotunda during the dance with the general, one at the very end of the eighth chapter on the ship) and TWO rope arrows (one on the ship after the elevator, one at the entrance to the rotunda), and it was possible to do without them.

I advise you to enable everything except iron man, save at the beginning of the chapter and silent stun. So you can stun (your cap) and load if you get burned. You will get exactly 700 points from this))) About arrows and tools: personally, I don’t see any problems with them at all. 3 merman (you don’t need more to complete it) are taken in the prologue (at the end) and in chapter 1 (almost the very beginning) and 1 more in 7 in the room with the boss. Dumb in chapter 2. Rope arrows can be found in the Moira shelter, 2 of them, 1 of which we use when we go to chapter 6 (by the way, it also has one rope arrow (inspect the room where you will turn the valves more carefully)). There are 2 more cable cars in Chapter 7 in the cathedral in a small room (if you look at the balcony with it from the main entrance, it is on the right). 2 is already in the dungeon, where you only need wire cutters (which, by the way, are the cheapest tool of all).

The most important thing is that when choosing restrictions, NEVER choose “Iron Man”, saving at the beginning of the chapter and moving slowly - you will break the gamepad =)
Let it be as hot as you like - the main thing is that you can save and quickly jump into the shadows if someone is coming towards you.

I chose “Iron Man”, thus making my passage easier, due to the fact that I could kill everyone, raise the alarm and save anywhere, and take damage. And I solved the problem with sudden death or mission failure by periodically writing a save to a flash drive.
