How to unlock the Last Name Legend achievement in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 14 - Definitive Guide

As there is no guide for this achievement I thought I would give my view on this bad boy.

Disclaimer!

This achievement may cause...

Irrational anger
Spontaneous throwing of your controller, resulting in possible property damage
unreasoned hatred for all the amazing shots that have been undertaken by golfers you may have once admired.

I have played every Tiger Woods game for the last few years and 100% each one. There has always been one achievement in the pack which really challenges even the most advanced players and this year is no exception. In my opinion though this achievement is possibly the hardest in recent years.

The main story line this year sees you recreating scenarios that have taken place involving golf's greatest ever players. I found it a really nice way of learning more about the history of the game.

For each challenge you will have an objective that you will have to complete. This is normally either recreate a single shot, beat another player or recreate a certain score/objective over a number of holes. There are 2 levels that you can obtain, Win and Legend. With Legend being understandably more difficult.
You may find that many of the events you be able to Legend on your first attempt with a bit of skill or luck.

However some of the objectives required to get the Legend level really provide a tough challenge.
There are too many challenges to go through them individually so I will try and give some general advice that you can hopefully use if you get stuck on a particular challenge. I will add any Individual guides at the bottom for challnages that people have real trouble with. If you have a guid to a particual tough challange please add it to the comments.

1. Many of the earlier challenges see you playing as players from the early 1900's with equipment from the same period. This means that you will not have the power and accuracy of the modern day guys that you may have been used to in previous games. I found it especially tough if an event had strong winds. I had many occasions when a drive and a 3 wood was not enough to get to a Par 4 in 2!
If you do find that the wind is proving a problem and the challenge consists of more than one hole keep restarting the event until the wind is either behind you or not as strong. I always tried to get birdie on the first hole of a challenge to allow me to drop a shot if possible later on.

2. DONT BE A HERO!
You will find that some of the challenges that ask you to recreate a score or objective like GIR can actually be very difficult to complete if you always home in for the flag stick. You have to know when to go for the Pin and when to just hit it in the middle of the green. I found that no matter what golfer I was using, putting was always very similar and I only managed to complete some events by hitting it in the heart of the green and making a long putt! There's nothing worse than almost finishing a challenge only to get carried away and hit the ball over the green or miss a fairway.

3. Learn from your mistakes
This links very closely to the last point. If you find you are failing a particular challenge try and see what you are doing wrong or which holes you are finding difficult. Maybe you could try and get a birdie on another hole allowing you to get par on a hole you are having trouble with. Try using different shots (punch, 3/4 etc) and just get the ball on the green. After a few attempts you will find that you may have similar putts. Learn the greens you are having trouble with so you know how they will break when the ball lands on the green (not just when putting).

4. Retry the event
Some challenges are made up of multiple objectives. You can only move on to the next one once the current objective is met. If you press start and Retry event it only restarts the current objective you are one not the whole challenge. Also if you legend on section but only win the others this will be saved and you wont need to legend it again (you may need to win it in order to get to the next stage though)

Hopefully if you follow the above steps you should complete 80% of the challenges no problem.

However, the remaining 20% can really take a while. I found that some events see you recreating famous shots, but then ask you to go one step further and actually get the ball in the cup! (even when the pro didn't do that in real life!)

For these events you have to learn the green and know how much spin to use. Also learn how the wind effects the flight of the ball at different strengths. I know it sounds a bit geeky but I found it worked for me. On one occasion I had to make an ace on the 16th at Augusta with Jack Nicklaus and after 2 hours I found the exact grid square on the green I needed to aim for with the exact amount of spin.

You have to be patient in this situations and know that the shot is possible. I ended up spending about 30mins on one challenge then switched to another to keep things interesting.
Try putting some music on to stop the boredom setting in!

So to summarise then, if you are having trouble with a particular challenge try...

Just hitting the ball in the centre of the green and hit a long put.
Retry the event to get the wind in your favour
Learn the green, wind etc and be patient!

If you do all of these and hopefully get a bit of luck you will crack this achievement... It will just take some time

If anyone else has any helpful tips they think would be relevant to this guide please leave a comment below and I will be happy to add it in!

Individual Challanges

Shot head around the world
Try aiming at the very right hand edge of the silver ring on the green. Then with the 3 wood (One down from driver), do a overpowered shot (pull back untill the swing plane turns red then quickly complete the swing). It is easy to miss hit it like this but if you get a stright shot the extra power along with the wind (I always had 7-8 mph behind me) would get me to the green and feed up to the hole with some forward/left spin.

I actually found the shot around the world not too bad as the conditions are very similar for each attempt which makes it easy to learn. The one that took me the longest was the double eagle on the par 5 2nd at Augusta with Bubba Watson. The fact that you actually have to tee off means that the 2nd shot into the green is never in the exact same position. Couple that with the changing winds and it really does make it a tough shot. I easily spent over 4 hours on that shot and got close so many times before finally nailing it. I would agree with gypsymuffin that the holes in one on Pebble Beach with Jack Nicklaus are also very tough and the wind is brutal especially on the 2nd par 3. However, for those I found using the driver and hitting a low shot (Move the right thumb stick all the way back. please note that just selecting a punch shot will still make the ball fly in the air!) resulted in the ball hitting the rough just before the green which took all the extra speed out of it, thus helping it to roll onto the green nicely. It took a while to get right but much easier than contending with 20mph winds!

I agree that this achievement is one of the most difficult in recent years. I haven't had too many problems recreating the 3,6,or 9 hole scores, but the one that I am having a really difficult time on is the Bobby Jones 1935 "Shot heard round the world". I've come close, but I find it difficult to even get on the green consistently with the horrible distance that those era clubs give you. It took a while for the Jack Nicklaus event that you mentioned, but at least you can reach the greens consistently on those. I also agree that you should switch events if you are on one for too long, because you do feel like chucking your controller into the wall. Thumbs up!

I found a small glitch on the 'Shot heard around the world' challenge. You can hit the water when the ball is going at a quick pace then it just bounces off and lands on the green. This may not help but this is how I got it in.

Does difficulty affect this achievement?

Not that I saw. It looks like the challenges are pre-set. So no matter what difficulty you play the challenge on the course conditions will always be the same and the AI will also maintain the same skill level.

Would you say shot heard round the world was the most difficult for you?

I got this achievement on Friday. The challenge I found the hardest was the Nicklaus hole in one at Augusta #16. I was so close about so many times before it eventually went in.

Another one I had trouble with, was with Nicklaus where you had to hole the second shot at Pebble Beech #8. The wind in this challenge is strong and it is really difficult to get the ball close. Got it in the end though. My controler was almost going through the TV with rage!

Thumbs up from me.

Having spent an hour trying with the 3 Wood, I changed to the driver, set the difficulty to amateur and the view to total distance, rather than carry. I aimed a couple of clicks to the right and pin high, ball bounced on the water and then rolled up and in the whole.

This requires a green swing and strike; rather than trying to get all the way into the red on both using the 3 Wood.

Holed it out on my 4th attempt. Much, much easier, imo. Good hunting!! smile

The shot heard round the world is actually one of the easier ones compared to some of the later challenges. I'm not sure why it's getting so much discussion everywhere. Maybe because it's the first one you come across that's not a gimme. But so many later challenges are much much harder because they don't even have consistent conditions so you can't even make small adjustments from your previous attempt because every attempt is different. Definitely one of the tougher achievements I've attempted recently not just in Tiger games but in general, and the current ratio will put it as the 12th toughest achievement on my list.

Try a punch shot with a driver, make sure it says "Low shot" in the bottom right corner of the screen though. Simple pressing X and selecting punch shot doesnt really work. You have to use the right thumbstick to make a punch shot(Push up on the right thumbstick). Then hit it as hard as you can and it will stop in the grass just before the green and trcikle on the putting surface. The benefit of the this shot is that you can aim almost straight as the wind will not come into play

@enigma

When you putt make sure you overswing and then push forward normally to get perfect/overswing. When I was putting with fast/overswing it was flying past the hole. For anyone not knowing how close they are coming to making it, use the replay option and get a general idea of if your to the left or right of the hole.

Figure I'll throw in a few tips for Bubba Watson's double eagle, since I got it today:

1. Play the hole only when you get a tailwind - blowing to the left a bit is fine, but no headwinds and no winds to the right (ie. a headwind on your second shot). The wind will kill your hits and make controlled targeting very difficult.

2. Drive the ball as far towards the green as possible. You want to be hitting irons onto the green. I know some have gotten this with the 3 wood but I couldn't come close.

3. With the irons on your second shot, aim roughly as follows:

A) First, aim to the far left side of the green.

B) Change your power (D-pad aiming; press directly up) to be about halfway between the green and the spectators.

C) Play a draw shot (RS aiming; press directly right) to be on the fringe of the green next to the bunker on the right side of the green.

D) Slide the entire aim to the left so that your bigger arrow aligns to roughly the right side of the bunker on the right side of the green.

E) Adjust slightly to account for wind variations.

F) Ready your stance, but before striking, put about 2/3 spin to the right side of the ball.

G) Hit the ball normally. Overswings seemed to be OK, but underswings were disastrous. I got mine on a perfect swing.

Using the above method, I got about 50 approaches within 10 feet and about 25 within 5 feet before finally getting the right roll into the cup. The ball should land roughly halfway up the green and slightly right of center, but the spin and draw should angle the ball movement to arrive in a roughly 2 o'clock direction. The green should do the rest for you.

There may be an easier way with the 3 wood or other spin/draw combinations, but fuck if I could find anything meaningful through an internet search, so here's a method that worked.

Most challenges don't require two shots which is why Bubba's double eagle is so difficult. For anyone struggling with Bubba's double eagle try to eliminate as much randomness as possible, using the following method I was able to get it done in about 30 minutes.

1st shot - Try to hit it perfect/perfect and use no spin, adjust for wind. This will create a fairly consistent second distance into the green.
2nd shot pt 1 - Move the hit marker towards the front of the green just to the left of the first yardage measurement, for example if it says 210 make it 209-212. It shouldn't be more than a yard or two in variation to try to stay consistent, adjust for wind as needed.
2nd shot pt 2 - While it is in the air put as much right spin as possible and ball should land in the middle of the green and role to the hole.

The key for me was eliminating different distances and angles into the green, by doing this I only had to start making adjustments with spin. Please message me if this isn't clear.

Here is my guide on how to complete the legends part for this achievement. having tried different options with fade and loft on the ball i decided the best way to get the holes was by wind adjustment which you feel is getting you closer to the hole. I will say there is 3 really challenging and frustrating ones to do the 1972,1986 & 2011. with patience trying different wind speeds should help while applying spin on the ball as its about to hit the green. thats how i got this achievement but most of it is luck of how you land on the green. Hope that helps guys

The Legends of the Majors mode has around 60 challenges spanning the different era's of the professional game, each era culminating in a match play against a legend/group of legends. Each legend match then unlocks the relevant achievement and the legend as a playable character.

The related achievements are straightforward as all events can be passed rather than 'Legended'. This, however, is the most challenging achievement in the game as you need to play well, get lucky with course conditions and the sometimes variable AI.

For specific challenges I'd advise checking youtube if you're really stuck but as the winds are changeable this is an achievement that will need patience, some good fortune and a decent level of skill.

Legends of the Majors tasks you to take down and recreate difficult tasks of legendary events from the past. These challenges can be very difficult tasking you to sink ridiculous shots, hit ridiculous scores, and take down golfing's greatest players of all time. There is both a completion level and a legend level; you must complete the legend level to get this trophy. Some of these challenges are very easy, while others are near impossible and take shear luck to complete. The following are challenges that you could possibly run into trouble.

Bobby Jones: This is the first hard challenge you'll face. To get legend in the event, you need to beat him by 2 strokes in 4 holes. Bobby Jones is fantastic and will birdie on only 1 hole if you're lucky. You should fully expect to birdie 3 of the 4 holes and par one of the holes he does. That's the bare minimum you can do. The first hole is the hardest, so if you can birdie that hole you'll be in good shape for the rest of the challenge. To take any variables out of the equation, you can birdie every hole, they simply won't allow him to hit 3 and you will win the challenge.

Shot Heard Around the World (1935): This is by FAR the hardest challenge to get legend on in the game. It not only takes good set up and a perfect shot, but also a lot of luck. Don't be surprised if you shot this shot 100 times before you sink it. Set up your shot consistently and make small adjustments each time refining your shot. This video shows the best strategy for the shot and it should be followed closely. Thanks dctx6xbox for the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=Jv_TX2v0RGU

Snead and Hogan: In this challenge, you'll play against both Snead and Hogan in a stroke play event. You'll need to win by 2 to legend the event. The game will send one of the golfers after you, essentially trying to keep pace with you throughout the event, while the other will most likely be far away from the top of the leaderboard by the end. The course played is easy, and it will be a very birdie filled round. When I played, Snead finished at -4 and I finished at -10. As long as you make your putts you should be fine.

Amen's Corner (1958): This challenge is a pretty tough one. The 3 holes consist of a tough birdie par 4, a very tough birdie par 3, and an easy eagle par 5. The wind blows hard, making this challenge much harder than it has to be. I suggest that you continue to restart the event until you birdie on the first hole. The second hole has a very small green making it extremely easy to overshoot the green. The greens are easy and level on both holes, so coming out with a birdie on one and a par on the other is perfect. The par 5's green can easily be reached in two shots, lining you up for an eagle putt and the win. You're going to have to make this eagle if you want a chance to win; the other two holes are just collectively too hard.

Gary Player (1961): This is a hard chip. Put the aim cursor at 18 yds, and keep it dead on straight like they set you up with. Hit a perfect shot both straight and distance wise (maybe a little bit of an overswing), and your ball should go out of the bunker, hit the little hill on the green and roll towards the cup. You ball may hit the cup and bounce out because of the pin and speed of the ball, but keep doing this and you will complete the challenge.

Trevino: Much like Bobby Jones, you'll need to beat him in a match play event. Also much like Jones, you will need to birdie at least 3 out of the 4 holes to win. He tends to birdie the 3rd hole, so watch out. Aim for the middle of the green, and use Poulter's good spin to get the ball close to the hole. Watch though as his balls fly low so they bounce far.

Seve's First Four (1983) For this to be possible, you need to have a very strong wind at your back for the 2nd hole or 3rd hole. You'll need to birdie the first and last hole, both of which are relatively easy holes. The 2nd hole almost requires a strong wind at your back to make it the distance enough to hit an eagle. If you have a strong back wind at the 2nd that also means you can get a strong back wind at the 3rd. With the back wind at the third, aiming to the right towards the tree line and a full spin forward you can easily make it to the green in one shot or even hit a hole in one. I think it's easier to go birdie, eagle, eagle, par but anyway to get 5 under and you're good to go.
