How to unlock the Early End achievement in Trek to Yomi - Definitive Guide

This is for killing Kagerou Shogun at the end of Chapter 3, he's a pretty simple boss but the catch is if you die that's it, it carries on with the story and you missed your chance this playthrough. There is a way around this which I'll go through at the bottom of this solution, but first the fight itself.

So as I say it's a simple fight, you basically want to get used to parrying his attacks which are usually slow, over-head attacks if you use this combo, so the combo is Parry, Heavy, Heavy, Parry, Heavy, Heavy and repeat until you're low on stamina, once you're low, Parry switch with the boss (Parry and Move Forward) which will make some space for your stamina to regenerate, let the boss come to you then Parry Heavy, Heavy. And repeat until you beat him. I use this strategy in the video below if you'd rather watch it in action.

Trek to Yomi - Kagerou Shogun No Damage Taken (Kensei Difficulty) - Early End Achievement

Note: While this is technically an ending to the game you'll still be able to continue with chapter 4 after the credits roll. Also achieving this ending does not pop the Kensei Playthrough achievement (and I assume Ronin too).

The Parry Switch move can be found early in Chapter 3 where you hit the horse that kicks the cart down the road to clear a door, the horse then runs to the bottom left of the screen, go there and you'll find Parry Switch in a small area on top of some crates. If you miss it here you will find it later on in Chapter 3 as a reward for killing the first spear enemy the game introduces, although if you get it from him you miss out on another skill (Heavy Thrust).

As for the workaround to only getting one attempt per playthrough, you'll need to use the cloud saves. So after using the shrine before the fight, quit to menu and close the game, this creates a cloud save. Now load up the game and give the boss a try, if you die press cn_guide, cn_start on Trek to Yomi, Manage game and add-ons, Saved data, click your Gamertag then delete from console. (Do not delete everywhere as you'll lose your save!) The next time you load up the game it will sync to your cloud save which in this case is right before the boss and allow you to try again. You can do this as much as you want until you beat him. I don't like posting this method but it's a bit annoying having to run through 3 chapters if you die, especially if doing it on Kensei like I did lol.

In chapter 3 is a cutscene, where a spear enemy is introduced. I killed him with 1 arrow and got the skill.
It's on the main path, so shouldn't be missable.

Interesting because I got the skill Heavy Thrust from that same enemy, Parry Switch was actually earlier on in Chapter 3 where you smack the horse, go to where the horse runs (bottom left) and it was hidden on a crate in that small area.

Can confirm that just dashboard+quitting dosen't allow you to fight him again, it sends you directly to the cutscene in chapter 4

Thanks, that's a shame. Also I've added both locations for the parry switch to the solution, I don't think it can be missed but if you get it from the 2nd location you miss out on another skill anyway so can't hurt smile.

I missed one skill on my first playthrough (in that horse location) and i got heavy thrust in chapter 4 than.
So maybe the skills unlock in the same order, and if you miss multiple skills (for example killing optional enemies in chapter 2) it can happen, that you get parry switch after chapter 3.
Anyway cloud method worked like a charm, thx

Quickest way to reset your attempt is to simply reload the checkpoint before you die. I went for the achievement of not getting hit by him and had to reload a couple times and I got the early ending.

Strict affect is right, reloading the checkpoint before dying works fine.

Cloud save didn't work. I quit to desktop as soon as I died, and deleted my local save, but it still moved onto chapter 4 when I loaded and resynced.

Completely doable, even on Ronin. If you start to get chained, just reload the checkpoint. Easy peasy.

Did PC players find any method to go back to earlier checkpoints? I think this will also be needed at the end of the game.

Good luck for anyone that is playing only on xCloud. I was playing on Kabuki mode and he killed me with only two strikes. Unless you have a console, or PC, to back up your previous, this achievement can give anyone a headache.

Most useful solution both for this achievement and the no-hit one, thanks you so much Infamous!
Thanks also to MasterCheeks three comments above here, I started parry switching after every parry+y+y combo when I had Kagerou at half health. As far as I can tell that's the only way of consistently stopping him from launching a flurry combo.
Also, after parry switching, I ran away from him as far as possible, and fired a single arrow. This wasn't necessary, but I think it might cut one Y-Y combo off the length of the fight.

Worked like a charm.
I did it while trying to beat him without being hit (for the "No, that's not possible..." achievement) and I didn't had to resort to save scum. I simply reloaded the checkpoint every time I had been hit (played on Kabuki difficulty).
Now, unlike it was explained on this guide, I didn't attack him until I was low on stamina. I went with the "parry + two heavy attack combo" twice. After that, execute the "place swap parry", without attack him, to reposition and restore some stamina.

A better combo for this would be "block" light attack, light attack, heavy attack. With this the boss will actually back off to regain stamina. It also uses less stamina compared to two heavy attacks and does about the same amount of damage.

That's because you don't quit to dashboard before deleting the save, You press the Xbox button, scroll down to the game, the hit the start / button that has 3 lines, go to manage game addons, and delete without quitting to dashboard. Oh boy did I have trouble with this guy, it seems the game likes to handicap you by not bothering to respond to random inputs during combat. You could go to parry/parry switch or attack and your character will just stand there. And it doesn't fix it by going wired connection with the controller.

I struggled with this for a few hours. My 2013 xbox one can't run the game very well and so missed inputs or stuttering was frequent. It's hard on Kensei, and on Ronin, and on Kabuki (easy). Lowering difficulty did not help me in any meaningful way. A few tips:

-Often my machine is still loading the boss fight arena, and so his first swing doesn't parry properly or my attack doesn't register and he hits/kills me right off the bat. Throwing/shooting something at the start usually gave me the second or two for my machine to load properly.

-You'll get into the Parry>YY rhythm pretty easily, and thus can pretty easily get him down to half health. This is when it got exponentially harder for me as his 5-7 swing flurry attacks become much more common. I had to actually re-teach myself to HOLD Block in case he starts a flurry, and only then YY if I watch his sword parry off of mine. You can't simply count on a parry working like it does most times, as then the unexpected flurry easily kills you.

-The gist of the boss battle going well is if he uses flurry attacks, and/or how well you can block them and roll away. He seems to almost always use parry-able attacks after you have had some space between you (ie after a place swap parry). It was best practice for me, after he's below half health, to only do one or two attacks before a place swap to regain space and stamina. It takes patience and a ton of RNG/luck.

Do a Manual save before this boss fight, because you if you die/get enough damage the game carries on into a cutscene and there's no chapter select or reload option.

A very difficult and missable trophy. Before the boss, make a save to a flash drive or cloud. Can also be combined with No, that's not possible... / No, that's not possible: upon receiving 1 unit. damage, checkpoint restart.
