How to unlock the Beyond the Veil achievement in XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Definitive Guide

You have to wait until you kill or capture a sectoid commander and research it. You'll then be able to build a Psilab building in your base. You can only test 3 people at a time, and it takes 10 days for the testing. Easiest thing to do is save before the testing, then just go down the list of soldiers 3 at a time and fast forward time in mission control. Just skip any ufo detection or abductions. If after 10 days all 3 soldiers came up as duds, just reload your game and test the next 3 soldiers in the list.

Do you know if you find out if a soldier is gifted using this method if he will be if you do it again?

Yes, i tested the same people who appeared to be gifted again. And after reloading a few times, the same couple of people were always the gifted ones. Not sure if they are the same if you start a new game though as i haven't finished my current game.

It's ending up the same for me as well. The higher the will the higher the chance of them having Psionics.

Yeah i noticed the ones that ended up being Psionics had wills over 82 if i remember correctly. I recently got the officer training perk that gives extra will every time a soldier ranks up. Going to have to see if that improves my odds of getting Psionic soldiers after i ranked up some of the newbies i hired.

I can confirm that it is not always the same results. Just tried with one guy three times with and only being gifted once.

Apparently Shinwasha is correct, i retried psi training with the soldiers i had checked before and 2 new people came up as gifted. So it looks like it may be completely random.

Also, you don't need to capture one alive. I got the ability to build the lab because of the autopsy alone. Researching either one gets you the lab. Reseqarching a live commander also gives you a psionics research credit. Please fix.

Do you always turn up a gifted soldier on your first test? I've turned up at least one gifted soldier every time on the 1st test after building the psi labs. I'm on my 3rd play-through now and it's been every time. Am I lucky or is this part of the game?

I think its all based on luck as i've had a couple of tests come up negative on the first try :)

the solution of Lewd Llama 69 is correct, this is only an additional tipp.

i just wanted to add that there is a way to get the psi ability for EVERY soldier in your barracks. and you also can get the gift for ALL 3 tested soldiers at once. though this takes a little time to do, it can be really helpfull on the higher difficulties to have a team full of psi soldiers.. and it's just neat anyway.. smile

before doing it i recommend to have 2 or even 3 copies of your actual save (just save 3 times in a row) to make sure you don't overwrite an important savegame by accident..

1.) to start, simply put the soldier(s) you want to have psi ability on into the psilab
2.) save the game
3.) fast forward time in mission control, skip every event till the psi testing result comes up

4.)1. if the soldier(s) DO NOT HAVE psi ability continue with step 5.
4.)2. if some of the soldier(s) DO HAVE psi ability skip steps 5. to 7. and continue with step 8.

5.) reload the original savegame you started with before starting with step 1.
6.) simply go to the situation room, open up the black market and sell something (i usually sell 1 alien alloy because there are always enough of them around) or alternately you can also go to the engineering and buy something, or start a new foundry project. all of this will somehow reset the calculation for the next psi test. (if it doesn't work after a few attempts try change to sell 2 alien alloys or 1 elerium instead, sometime that helps changing the result)
7.) now put the same soldier(s) that failed in the last test run into the psi test again and repeat steps 1. to 4. until you have at least one soldier with psi ability (it can happen that you have to try more than one time to get it, specially if you want the gift on only one specific soldier)

8.) now that you know which soldier(s) will have the psi, reload the game you saved after putting the soldier(s) into the test chamber (step 2.)
9.) remove all soldier(s) from the test that will NOT have the psi.
10. save the game again

now you have your original savegame with at least one soldier already in the test that will get psi in 10 days guaranteed. to get all 3 slots full with psi capable soldiers start again from step 1. and just fill up the other free slots until you have all 3 full with future psi soldiers smile (you can also use those that you just removed but first use step 6. to reset their chance on psi..)

i hope this was understandable and somehow helpful. if you going to leave negative feedback please tell why in the comments or in a pm, thanks.

Story related.

You will have to build a PSI Lab after you beat the Overseer ship mission. You don't need to capture the Sectoid Commander to build this. After the PSI Lab is built, you can test three soldiers for the Gift at a time. If you want a certain soldier to have the Gift, you can save before starting the test and then advance 10 days. If the soldier you wanted the Gift does not receive it, reload your save and try again. What I did was put two high will soldiers who I wanted to have the Gift and one soldier that I didn't care about in the first round of testing. I then saved and reloaded until the two soldiers that I wanted the Gift for got it. While being tested the soldiers keep all of their weapons and armor so strip them of their gear if you need to.

A soldier with the Gift (meaning psionic abilities) will have to be found one way or another, for this you need to build a Psi-Chamber to test your people. The opportunity to explore and build the chamber opens after opening the Sectoid Commander, whom you will meet at the alien base. By the way, if you capture him alive, the corpse will appear immediately after interrogation, so there is no dilemma.

Psionic abilities are not “hardwired” into soldiers from birth, but are determined based on their will, rank, and other parameters during testing. It is known for sure that high willpower increases the likelihood of discovering a gift, but there is evidence that a high rank and a large number of psionics in a team, on the contrary, reduces the chance. Those who are interested in going deeper into the essence of the issue can read the forum here or here (there you can even find a piece of script that is responsible for this logic)

Each soldier can be tested only once; if there are no abilities, then they cannot be developed (unlike the original game).
