How to unlock the Lone Wolf achievement in XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Definitive Guide

As the description suggests, this only applies to a crash site mission, not simply any mission done solo. While choosing squad members for the mission, simply remove all but one squad member, and start the mission.

Obviously, this is far easier when assaulting one of the Small Scout ships with just 6-7 aliens, rather than one of the Supply Barge, Abductor, or Battleships. Even late in the game, you'll have opportunities to shoot down the Small Scout crafts, so you can be choosy.

Your play style will dictate what type of soldier you bring for this effort; I chose a Support Soldier, as I was trying this pretty early in the campaign, and the added speed (Corporal -- sprinter perk) comes in handy. However, trying this later in the campaign certainly has its advantages, if you have the Ghost Armor, which can bring out the advantages of every class.

Always remember to save often, so you can simply re-load, should something unfortunate happen, and you can choose a different course of action.

If you feel like knocking out two birds with one stone, make your solo soldier a female, so you can also get:

I actually did this late on in my impossible playthrough and it was really easy (even without abusing save-load efforts haha!)

I waited until I had the hyperwave relay and used an assault colonel with mind shield and titan armour - got a small scount (2x cyberdisc/drone pairs and 2x sectoid commanders) and moved until I got one in line of sight and retreated to use overwatch every move. They followed and would slowly be hit while not getting close enough to actually fire.

Mind shield made all 3 mind control attempts on me fail so got it easily!

I *DID* use a female specifically for your point about Flight Of The Valkyries though - both popped together ^_^

Interesting. I just failed to get the achievement, too. I was on an easy playthough, bumped up the difficulty to Classic, then scanned for UFOs. I finally got a small one, played the mission and had two results. One was at the end, an ethereal got right in my face, I shot him, and when he exploded, my character went critical, but it finished the mission -- no achievement. I then re-loaded and killed the ethereal from a distance after some different moves -- again, no achievement.

According to what people have written in these comments, it appears I transgressed against the XCOM deities, and couldn't get the achievement because of:

1. My starting difficulty was Easy
2. I re-loaded a save to complete the mission

Can any one else confirm or deny these things? I'll keep trying, but the last few achievements in this game are annoying. I got "Wet Work" last night after tons of effort, so I'd think #1 above isn't why I didn't just get Lone Wolf.

I loaded up a save from an easy play through and changed the difficulty to classic. Then waited for a small UFO to show up. I compleated the mission with one guy and did not get the achievement. Apparently changing the difficulty before the mission doesn't work.

@ NBA Kirkland.

You CAN get this achievement by loading a previous save and switching difficulties. I switched difficulties before I started scanning for UFO's and played through the crash mission and got the achievement.

Played a second time and still no achievement I checked other sites and it only seems to be unlocking for most people when they start the game on classic maybe theyve patched it since Mr Arrow unlocked it.

I've heard that you if you die and reload mid-mission you won't get it. Perhaps that's the problem that BaneDain and I had. Can anyone confirm? Do you recall if you died and reloaded when you got it, Mr Arrow?

I can confirm that you the achievement will not be earned if you reload a save in the actual mission. You have to load back to mission control and start the whole thing over. The achievement did not pop after my first time winning solo and the sole difference between that attempt and my 2nd successful playthrough was that I reloaded once in the mission when I got spawned on top of. I didn't appreciate the game randomly dropping 3 heavy floaters right on top of my position, but you just have to deal with it or reload the mission entirely from the base.

That's interesting, Maethor, though that was not what I experienced -- I did die a few times during my effort, but simply reloaded to a point within the mission, and chose a different action each time, eventually winning the mission, and popping the achievement. I wonder if others have had your experience?

It didn't pop for me either. I loaded an easy save, changed difficulty to classic, scanned for a few months shooting down UFOs, then cleared the map with no reloads...
I used mind control and the dlc character, so I will try again with a normal class/character and see if that helps.

I don't know that I would try to load an easy save, then change the difficulty -- I've never attempted it this way, and only ever heard people having problems trying to do it that way, so would never recommend anyone trying that way.

If you're looking to 100% the game, just attempt it on a classic-difficulty play-through?

A year and a half later, I can deny one of Zatosan's claims. I'm currently doing an Impossible run and soloed the first ship I came across and successfully unlocked the achievement. I reloaded multiple times to save scum and still unlocked it, and my starting difficulty was Impossible. Seems like starting on Easy and flipping over is causing the issue.

Adding another data point- I cleared a UFO that had landed and did not get the achievement. Apparently it MUST be a UFO that you've shot down? Has anyone else managed to get the achievement on an intact, non-intercepted UFO that simply landed?

Hey, Quantic -- in the achievement description, it does say "crash site," and that is, indeed, a requirement -- sorry for any confusion? Though, if you managed this with an intact craft, repeating for a crash site should be even easier for you, as I've found, typically, the crash sites are slightly easier than the landed crafts. :)

Confirmed, you CAN save scum, but you CANNOT change difficulty on an existing save.

You absolutely CAN SWITCH difficulties!

The trick seems to be that you have to complete any mission on the desired difficulty prior to the actual UFO crash site mission (also works with abduction missions for the "Wet Work" achievement).

Also, saving and loading is definitely not a deal breaker.

My successful attempt was based on an easy-playthrough.
I switched to classic, completed a terror mission on classic, followed by a "very difficult" abduction mission (netting me the "Wet Work" achievement), before I intercepted a small scout. "Lone Wolf" popped as soon as the last pesky alien bit the dust.

Just for reference, I am playing on Xbox One.

I just finally got around to finishing the game. I got this cheeve by starting on easy, switching to classic immediately after the second mission and making a save. I then scanned, shot down the ufo and cleared the mission solo. I didn't need to reload any saves, so can't verify that or not. Also on xbone.

I just got robbed of this 2x on 360! I switched to Classic from Normal - but when the map/mission had loaded/started I noticed the difficulty had reverted back to Normal! angry I assume you can Mind Control - but you can't if you go for the Valkyrie achi simultaneously (a controlled enemy counts as a male teammate - so forget it).

Edit: Got this achi - started a new Classic game and after the 1st mission I scanned until there was a UFO to shoot down and just used a Heavy. The 1st UFO only has 2x2 sectoids and the crystally alien - just make sure the first pair group so you can grenade them together, shoot the next pair and RPG the crystal dude wink

Yo, I got both Valkyrie and Lone Wolf with a female squaddie sniper(only female they gave me) with new classic ironman campaign. The trick was luck, strategic pistol/grenade use, and save scumming via dashboard if something went tits up. Killed all four sectoids and outsider with 20% chance to hit and she got out of the mission without getting hit. Popped both on results screen.

Funny fact wt I encounter on Impossible, the 1st ship I shot down.
The outsider moving distance is ridiculously long & it's aim is almost confirm crit hit.
I used a Corporal Heavy w/ bullet swarm only.
Cause I was carelessly shoot the rocket to a group of sectoid, so I cant hit that w/ the outsider.
After a long time save & load I tried to trick the outsider a few turns to find a better position.
But I found that the outsider was out of ammo but it still run to the next of my heavy.
The next turn, shot it twice and done.

You can easily get this achievement during the tutorial when you first shoot down a small alien craft. There are two groups of two sectoids and one crystaline alien. Try to go around the edge of the map so as to activate one group at a time. In my case, I used a heavy corporal - Fire rocket and bullet swarm - equipped with a grenade. Like the others said, take it slow.

This achievement gets easier the longer you wait:

1. I would suggest using a Heavy Colonel - Fire Rocket/ Bullet Swarm/ Shredder Rocket/ HEAT ammo/ Will to Survive/ Danger Zone/ Mayhem
2. Ghost armor is a very big help.
3. Blaster Launcher and Heavy Plasma is also a very big help.
4. The smaller the ship the easier, small Scout ships have between 5-7 aliens.
5. It must be a UFO mission you shot down via. Interceptor/ Firestorm
6. If an alien is successful using Mind Control on your only/ last soldier you automaticaly lose the mission.
7. If you have the Hyperwave Relay you can see what aliens are on the UFO.

Once you have found the right size ship you can keep reloading (before you shot it down) and it will create a new random assortment of aliens, keep doing this till you find the ones you prefer.
I kept loading till I recieved some weaker Thin Men, Sectoid Commanders and Cyberdisk groups (to take advantage of Heat ammo). Since I had Thin Men i equipped a medkit to make me immune to poison but it was unnecessary.

The idea is to NOT let the aliens even have a turn, keep on ghost armor till you find a group:
If you find a group of 1 or 2- ghost between them and use Bullet Swarm (depending on their strength).
If you find a group of 3 or more- back up and fire a Rocket.

You can easily just do it on the very first ufo you shoot down. I sent a assault trooper in making sure to save at the beginning of each turn. You must utilize full cover whenever possible, as well as make use of your run & gun skill to get you close to single aliens. I was able to take out all of the aliens alone using this method. Also, just make sure to shoot any sectoids that are using mind merge on another one. That will kill both of them in one shot. Save your grenade for whenever 2 sectoids are grouped together or for the outsider thats located in the ship.

This guide is meant for people like me who didn't win this achievement during one of your full playthroughs, and you want to try to go back and get it with the least work.

Start a game in Easy difficulty. On your first mission, there are four sectoids and four soldiers. Try to let each soldier get one kill, and try to avoid getting shot. Ideally, you will end the first mission with four healthy squaddies. In my case, I ended it with two healthy squaddies, one wounded squaddie, and a healthy rookie.

Now continue playing and start your next mission. Take any healthy squaddies you have, then any healthy rookies from your first mission, then fill the squad out with new rookies. This mission has six sectoids. Once again try to let everyone on your squad get at least one kill, and try not to let them get hurt. You're trying to get as many soldiers promoted in your first two missions as possible, without getting hurt.

When the second mission is over, switch to Classic difficulty and SAVE. *This* save will be the one you need to reload if you don't get the achievement on your next try. Now wait for the first UFO and shoot it down. Look at your soldiers and pick the one you like the best. If you have a Corporal, that's probably who you should take. Otherwise, you're looking for a Squaddie with high aim and a tactical class you feel comfortable with. Personally, I prefer the Heavy for this achievement because of the rocket. You may like the Support for the smoke or the Assault for the Run-N-Gun. I don't feel like the Sniper is the way to go, because Headshot doesn't gain you anything against the weak enemies you'll be facing.

Pick your one soldier and launch the mission. Proceed in small moves, staying within the light blue line and moving from full cover to full cover as much as possible, and ending your turn with Overwatch. There will be two groups of two sectoids each, outside the ship, and an Outsider inside. So, you'll probably have three little battles to fight. Reload your weapon after each battle, but always make sure you're in full cover when reloading. If you're like me and used the Heavy, you can use the rocket on the Outsider, who tends to stay in full cover and can't be killed with a frag grenade. Use the frag grenade on a sectoid who is doing mind merge with another one, killing two birds with one stone. (Speaking of birds, why are there so many birds soaring *through* the UFO?)

If you die, Load Game from before you shot down the UFO. There are a lot of comments on the other solutions from people who didn't get the achievement even though they thought they did everything they were supposed to. I was the same way; I must have won this battle seven times without unlocking the achievement. In my experience, you won't get it if you Load Game at any time after you make contact with the UFO in Mission Control. You can't change difficulties after that either.

The achievement will unlock at the "Mission Completed!" screen that comes up after the last enemy is killed.

Getting the achivement this way took me about an hour, but that included a lot of fails where I loaded from the wrong point. I reckon it will take 30-45 minutes if you load from the right spot.

I did this very late game against a supply barge - 12 aliens (2 x Sectopod; 4 x Drone; 3 x Muton; 2 x Elite and 1 x Ethereal). Key was using a Psi Heavy - Bullet Swarm; 3 rockets; heat ammo - with all psi abilities - equipped with psi armor; heavy plasma; blaster launcher (doesn't need line of sight) and mind shield. This set up gives a 100% chance of mind control against all enemies except Ethereals - 'will' was 125.

Basically take it slow - very slow! Get some luck - mind control whenver possible as these become preferential targets for the aliens - and retreat when necessary for MC to recharge. Sectopods go down in one bullet swarm - you need to be close and this depends on enemy location. Ideally they spawn behind the first doors you open.

When you have 1 Elite and the Ethereal left, MC the Elite - next turn move the Elite first to get an attack on the Ethereal - this is important as you need to reduce the Ethereal's HP enough that two rockets can kill it. Fire 1st rocket - hitting the Elite doesn't matter BUT you must not kill it - repeat you must not kill it. The Ethereal will attack and kill the Elite next round leaving you to fire another rocket for the kill and the achievement.

I did this with no reloads as I'd heard rumours that these disable the achievement - although not personally confirmed.

I did this based on a combo of the above ideas. At the very end of my second playthrough on Easy, before activating the Gallop chamber I switched difficulty to Classic and kept scanning for the smallest UFO I could find.

IMPORTANT - you must change difficulty to Classic BEFORE scanning for the UFO.
The first time I attempted this I changed difficulty to Classic after the UFO was shot down and it never popped. Grrrr.

The smallest UFO I got was a medium Scout with 8 Aliens encountered in this order -
- Cyberdisk with 2 supporting drones
- 3x Muton Elite
- Muton Elite + Ethereal

So 2 waves of three and the boss fight with a single muton.

Choice of soldier was Heavy Colonel with Bullet Swarm, HEAT, and a Plasma Blaster Launcher. Ghost Armour helped a lot with the Muton Elites. I took grenades but never used them, probably better off with a mind shield in hindsight.

Strategy was basically move into full cover gradually, overwatch and let them come to me. This worked for the Cyberdisk which was taken out with HEAT rocket in one go.

The group of Mutons I ghosted next to and then did the bullet swarm thing before they even had a chance to move as someone else suggested. Once they were done that just left one muton guarding the Ethereal, luckily he came to me so was sorted with Overwatch,

The way I dealt with the Ethereal was firing "blind" with the plasma launcher which was the only way I could take the Ethereal down without closing in for Line of sight and getting mind controlled.

I fired my remaining 2 rockets using indirect fire from outside the UFO through a gap in the roof where I roughly guessed he was, and it did the trick. Satisfying seeing that "16 damage critical hit pop up" both times!

There are two ways to go about this:

The first way is as soon as you get your armor upgraded and a light plasma rifle, wait to shoot down a small scout which will contain five aliens. Bring along an experienced Heavy with at least two rockets and the ability to carry two grenades and proceed to blow the aliens to smithereens. Make sure that you trigger one set of aliens at a time so they don't all swarm you.

The second method is how I did this. I waited until near the end of the game when I had PSI abilities, and used mind control on the aliens. I would mind control an alien, have it kill its friends while it got attacked/killed itself. After the mind controlled alien came after me, I killed it with either a Heavy or Sniper. I pressed until my PSI soldier's mind control ability was ready to be used again and repeated the process. Make sure that you have high will as well as will-enhancing gear equipped, because if you do this near the end of the game, you will have to kill an Ethereal which will attempt to mind control you.

Obviously, it's easier to do this on Classic.
I recommend going for this achievement early in the game as there are fewer enemies and the enemies are weaker.
I'd also suggest to do it with a Heavy and take a Frag Grenade. The ability to do wide area damage can be essential, if you are having difficulties dispatching the enemies.

Considering that the terminator mode is not required, the Save/Load system will help in obtaining this trophy at any difficulty level.

My preference is an attack aircraft with defense skill and lightning-fast reactions.

As a heavy fighter, you can try out the rocket launcher and grenade during training.

but it wouldn’t be easier if you put one soldier (the most pumped one) and the rest of the T-BMPs.
We just play, wait for the T-BMP to open, and buy.
We are waiting for the Small Scout to attack, of course we shoot him down, hit him with a bunch of furs and one soldier.

It is imperative that the difficulty be set when you start a new game, switching after the start of the game will not work.

It just so happened that when playing in classic mode after the first mission, a female fighter received a class - heavy infantry. The mission with the first downed Small Scout was started only by this fighter. Five enemies. Three sectoids are killed with a machine gun. The commander of the "plate" (rogue) from the RPG and in the last sectoid grenade. Wounded for 6 days and + achievements:
Flight of the Valkyries / Flight of the Valkyries , and the super-legendary "Lone Wolf"
PS In general, whatever class the “girl” gets, that’s what you go for. At the beginning of the game on the Small Scout there should be no problems. Carefully, slowly, well, no one canceled Save/Load and you get two trophies for completing the mission!

It is best to start a new game on the classics, go through the first mission. Then a UFO should arrive, if another mission appears, then feel free to skip it. It is better to complete the first mission with a downed UFO, as there will only be 5 enemies (4 sectoids and a “captain”). The Sectoids will be on the edges of the map, and the Outsider will be in the plate itself. Move along the hills, this is how you get bonuses.

1) Do not try to get this trophy if you started playing on easy or normal. If you changed the difficulty before the downing or immediately after the landing, then this will do nothing, you will just waste your time.

2) Plates that have sat down on their own do not count.

3) You are not pressed for time in such missions. Don't rush anywhere, do everything slowly. Move from a reliable shelter (a completely painted shield) to another similar one. Move only one action point, on the 2nd go into overwatch mode. You need to lure out one pack of aliens at a time, don’t be afraid to retreat.

4) Don’t forget, if a sectoid (little gray man) enhances another, then when the “caster” is killed, the object of the enhancement will also die.

The easiest way to do this is with a fighter of the Assault class, pumped to the maximum. In the additional slot we take a grenade or nanoarmor. You can try to go with the "Support" class, pumped to the maximum - it has 2 additional slots. We take 2 guarantors or a grenade and nanoarmor.

The easiest way to do this is with a mind-controlled psionicist pumped to the maximum on a crashed small alien ship of 6 bodies. Don't listen to the rest of the woodworms.

Lol, I cleared the first downed UFO with a sniper on a high difficulty level) I was lucky, I didn’t even need saves, since no one hit the fighter, and he practically didn’t miss. For me, at the beginning of the game it is easier to complete this achievement, since the enemies are weaker.

can be completed in the early stages of the game. Place the modifier in the second wave: everyone is different ; then choose a fighter with accuracy greater than 70-80, pump up a couple of levels; then you send him to clear the small scout (at the beginning of the game there are 5 simple enemies on it)
