How to unlock the Prisoner of War achievement in XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Definitive Guide
To get this achievement, you first must have researched the "Arc Thrower". After researching it, build at least one in engineering. Now the Arc Thrower is a pretty close range weapon, so I highly recommend using support characters with smoke grenades to close that gap safely.
Now its not a guarantee that you will stun the alien, so i reccommend having either 2 people go in with Arc Throwers at the same time, or have another soldier ready to kill him if it fails, and try again with the next mission.
From MetalThreshKeen:
You'll probably get this achievement before you level up a sniper high enough to take the perk, but capturing a live alien can be made easier if a sniper can first make a 'disabling shot'. The alien losses any reaction shot from overwatch and will likely spend their next turn reloading their weapon to repair it. So you can either get in a second round to retry the arc thrower attempt if necessary; or else dash to close the distance and stun them next round

You can also just save before trying to stun your first sectoid or thin man. If you fail, just reload and try again.

Story related.
After you research Xeno-Biology Tech, you will receive an objective to capture a live alien. Research Arc-Thrower Tech, then build an Arc-Thrower and go alien hunting. If you capture an Outsider alien, you will fulfill a game objective and the trophies for capturing a live alien and stunning an Outsider will both pop. Use pistols to get them down to 1 HP for a higher success rate to stun them.

The game will tell you from the very beginning about the need to capture living aliens. It is necessary to study the biology of aliens (one of the first projects) and build a special chamber on the base. Capturing and interrogating gives a plus to the speed of researching certain technologies, and besides, the alien weapons in this case are not destroyed - you can research them and use them later.
The stun gun you'll use to grab only works at close range (across a cage), and has a normal chance when the enemy's health is 3 or lower (though it can be upgraded later). The target can be previously weakened by shots from a pistol. Robots and Chryssalids cannot be captured for interrogation.
At the early stage of the game, the combination of heavy suppression (reduces the enemy’s accuracy and prevents him from moving) + support smoke grenade (less chance of hitting you) worked well for me. The combination of these two skills allows you to get to the desired distance with virtually no risk. You can additionally protect yourself by using the “close defense” skill behind shelters. Closer to the middle, the support class did a good job, with its movement advantages from abilities and armor. Please note that your stormtrooper will not be able to paralyze the alien after using the “shooting on the run” skill - only shoot.
According to the plot, one way or another you will have to capture living aliens, so you won’t be able to miss the trophy.

To capture an alien, you must first build an Isolator and develop an Arc Thrower. Give any soldier the Arc Thrower (placed in the auxiliary slot), wound the enemy, then bring him within range and fire a shot. The alien is stunned if he has critically low health points left. Only living, intelligent aliens can be stunned - drones, cyberdisks, chryssalids and sectopods cannot be stunned or interrogated.
