How to unlock the War Hero achievement in Age of Mythology: Retold - Definitive Guide
This will definitely be the hardest achievement to get (so far). The reason for that is the 1v3s. If you have an option for Co-op that makes it easier however I did it all solo. However, AI is AI. They play the same way every game and are pretty dumb. For the record I’m super average at this game. I can barely micromanage, usually just set the default presets per age for resources, auto queue and then slowly adjust as needed. So it's do-able for anyone if you commit the time. If you are good at RTS games and can micromanage you should just stick with aggressive playing. I cheesed the missions with Hero spam and turtling. The build is simple.
God:
Thor. You need a Norse God for this to work. The reason is Hersirs. The unit is by default a Hero and costs 0 favor. Also generates more favor for God Powers. Which means you can spam them and with Legend blessings makes a terrifying combo. This is the only unit you will need (minus some range for flying units). For reference my 30 Hersirs (Fully upgraded - so Age 4 all hero/infantry upgrades + bonus armory upgrades from Thor) took down a full health Titan. I choose Thor as he has more specific upgrades for Hersirs.
Legend Blessings:
1. Gaia’s Lashing Roots - This is the most broken blessing to exist. Try and get it to Heroic Tier ASAP. You essentially make a single hero strong enough to deal with several units alone. So imagine when you have 60+ heroes.
2. Poseidon's Rushing Tide- Movement Speed Buff for faster destruction
3. This one is up to you. I personally went with Ra’s Nourishing Sun for cheaper villagers. but any blessing that you like works. Ones that affect God Powers are fantastic since you will have insanely fast favor generation.
Important World Twists:
- The worst by far is Horus' Ancestral Protection. Making units revive is just annoying and makes the game significantly longer. Works for you as well yes but this also means the early rushes from 3 opponents get very annoying.
- Hel’s Mythical Frenzy can change things. Removing the favor costs means you can spam Myth units with all the myth Blessings instead of Hero blessings. Although Heros are exceptional against Myth units so either build works.
Strategy vs Hard AI:
AI is very predictable. They will send an attack party every few minutes that you can easily defend with a couple of Hersirs. Use walls/buildings to your advantage. I always make a wall of buildings to start with houses/temple/armory to block off any flanks then towers spread out around the base. Use walls to cut off routes and force them to go around or get delayed long enough for your Hersirs to support. AI will ALWAYS go after your villagers so use the Town Center bell to recall all your villagers everytime.
Pay attention to what color is which AI. Most 1v3s have a defender. The defender will never attack you so leave them for last. The Attacker will harass you the whole time so when you have a decent army of Hersirs take him out first. The Standard is middle ground, take them out after the attacker.
1v1 is super easy. Can either go full aggressive and micromanage to kill off their villagers or just turtle build.
You will get better and better as the missions go on so by the end when majority are 1v3s you should have a consistent setup/strategy every game.
General Strategy:
- Use the auto-resource option if you wish otherwise micromanage for the first few minutes.
Right off the start send your 3 dwarves to gold then auto-queue dwarves, sending them to Food and Wood. -- After this just split them up somewhat evenly, focusing on Food and Wood as you gain gold fast with dwarves.
- Send your starting units to explore and look for relics/animals/town centers. Also map out the surrounding area so you can expect where attacks will come from.
- Immediately build a temple, a house and ox carts. If you can position an ox cart between a gold mine and forest that is ideal. Get all 3 starting ox cart upgrades for wood, gathering food and gold.
- Age 2, choose Freyja for Valk healing and an HP buff for Hersirs. Immediately upgrade your watch towers, build a few more houses, an armory and walls to block flanks. After these upgrades focus on Food and Gold.
- Start training Hersirs from your Temple and get the Hammer of Thunder upgrade from the Armory.
- Do not rush to Age 3. You need to get at LEAST 4-5 Hersirs PER enemy. So if you are doing a 1v3 with one AI defender you should have around 10 Hersirs total to defend. If there is no defender AI then you need around 15 as you will face 3 separate attacks from different directions very soon.
- With the blessings you chose you should be able to easily survive the first few waves of attacks. Remember to recall all dwarves when attacked; you don’t want to lose them.
- Age 3 - Choose Bragi as the Flaming Weapon God power is insanely strong.
- Now you have breathing room. Manage your resources upgrading anything Hero/Infantry, guard towers, maxing houses, building more Town Centers etc. Once I have around 20 Hersirs I will save up for Age 4.
- Age 4 - Now it gets easy. Choose Tyr and immediately use Fimbulwinter. Now you know where all the enemy Town Centers are. Set up an auto-queue for all your temples and great halls to train Hersirs. I liked to have 5+ buildings auto-queuing. Continue to research and upgrade guard towers/infantry/heroes etc.
- Once you have around 20+ Hersires saved up, send them into the Attacker AI (KEEP several in your base as the other AI will keep sending attacks), use Flaming Weapons and watch the fun. Now once again AI is dumb. - Your units will always prioritize enemy units even when they are getting attacked by multiple buildings. I like to control around 10 of them and target watch towers/castles/town centers.
- You should max out the population quickly so take over as many town centers as you can and keep sending units in. You should also be getting a ton of favor so keep spamming your God Powers. Build a titan gate if you wish and the titan can focus buildings.
That’s all you need! I would use this strategy on the 1v1s first, then 1v2s and finally the 1v3s to practice it. Can modify things as needed.

Good guide, I didn't use a norse god but your strategy makes a lot of sense. Hero spam with Gaia's Lashing Roots is the best combo out there. Personally I used Kronos' hero tree to spam hero murmarillos, and then cav and archer in lategame. Thor's Thunder is really good to combine with this. Micro in this game can be brutal, units on attack move will stop destroying a palace to go run halfway across the map after vills. Kronos' Drowsy Dance (acquired for beating the last gateway in part 1) is really good for surviving the early game, which is about the only really tough part.
