How to unlock the Stoic achievement in Amnesia: Rebirth - Definitive Guide

This achievement is earned by finishing the game dying less than 4 times. It can only be unlocked on Original Mode.

Ensure that you don't remain in dark places for too long, flashing "visions" and dark marks around the edges of the screen are warnings that you need light very soon. When enemies are around, make use of the hide mechanic (when crouched, hold down cn_LSc) where neccessary.

Or you can cheese it somewhat by saving regularly, and quitting out of the game to try again.

Note, the achievement will not unlock if you choose the Harvester ending, you must choose one of the other two.

This achievement is definitely reminiscent of Silent Hill 2. Where you have to keep Marie from taking damage, keep her close etc. The bloodier she gets the worse ending you end up getting.

Strangely, I didn't get this achievement when I chose the Provider ending, but I reloaded my save and did the Iconoclast ending and it unlocked.

The game actually keeps count of your deaths. Press the guide button, tab over to Game Activity (controller icon) and click on Stats.

Exiting if prompted to wiggle is a surefire way to get this.

How many of the 'deaths' in the game are scripted? For example, during chapter 2, you fall off a plank into the dark and then see a monster in the dark. The fear spikes and you pass out getting the death 'visions'. Not sure if this counts as 1/4?

EDIT:

After completing this on first attempt, I simply hit 'Exit' any time the game prompted me to wiggle the sticks to escape an enemy. This was probably over-kill as you typically get a free pass to escape once from an enemy. Most of the time, the issues were due to fear build up in the dark as opposed to enemies - there's tons of matches and fuel. In particular, with hindsight, I'd have used the lantern A LOT more often as you lose it towards the end and my inventory was full of fuel.

Last thing to note was that in the penultimate chapter, you can check your reflection in the fountain. In my first, blind playthrough, Tessi looked like a monster and commented as such. During my stoic playthrough, she looked in a lot better condition and said something along the lines of: "I'm not like Leon. I look a lot better. There's maybe hope for me". I suspect that the narrative here reflects your condition in relation to the achievement.

The more Tasi gets caught the more she turns into a ghoul.
To get this achievement you need to finish the game by getting caught as little as possible.

Missable

As you progress through the game, especially after the story-related instances where you get "caught", Tasi will bring up her arms into view and you'll see them turn a rather unpleasant color before disappearing into her arms again. Your arms represent how contaminated/tainted you are and how close you are to becoming a Harvester. For this trophy, you need to keep your arms (and your mind) as clean as possible. For the sake of simplicity, you want to aim to not become tainted more than 3 times in one single playthrough. A few things contribute to this:
  • If you stay in the dark too long, your fear will increase, causing veins to appear on the border of your screen. If you remain in the dark without any sort of relief (lighting a match, checking on the little one, etc), then you'll start to see flashes of disturbing images, after which you'll go into a mental struggle. If you don't struggle free, you won't die or get captured, but you will become more tainted. The darkness is much more forgiving in the earlier chapters of the game and far more impactful in the later chapters.
  • If you stare at disturbing things too long (dead bodies, bones/guts, holes in the wall where the monsters come out), you'll go into the same mentally disturbed state that staying in the dark too long will put you in.
  • From the chapter The Cistern and on, you'll have to deal with shadow monsters who will stalk and sniff you out. You can try hiding from them by laying on the ground (hold down l3.png), but it's not always guaranteed to work, so do your best to just stay away from them as much as possible. If they capture you, you'll go through the same struggle sequence mentioned above (and below). If you break free, run. If you don't, you'll "die" and be transported to a different area in the chapter and will become more tainted.
  • Towards the end of the game, you'll have to deal with flying spirits and, at the very end, the Goddess, all of whom have a beam of light protruding from their face. If you get caught in this beam, quickly run behind something shield yourself or you'll end up in another struggle. If you manage to break free (these feel much more difficult to break free from), run. If you don't, you'll "die" and will be transported to a different area in the chapter. As with the others, you will also become more tainted.
The Struggle is Real: When you get into a struggle, if it was from being captured, the creature that did the capturing will appear in front of you. If it was from fear, you'll just crouch down and start losing your mind. Both struggles require you to use the ls.png and rs.png to break free. The problem is... the game doesn't exactly tell you how to use them... The method I've found that works best is to rotate each analog stick in opposite directions. You don't need to go crazy or violent with them, you just need to make sure both sticks are constantly moving.

If you don't break free, it's highly recommended you exit out of the game, and hit "continue" on the main menu so you can try again. When you get to the flying creatures, you can manually save before attempting to pass them so if you get caught, you don't have to replay the entire chapter. While this is a bit of a cheese method, it honestly will only help you in getting this trophy.

Laudanum: Laudanum will not help your contamination level/arms. It's purpose is to reduce your fear (the veins that appear around the border of your screen/your eyes). If you stay in the dark too long and find that going into light or checking on the little one is doing little to nothing to reduce the veins, popping a dose of Laudanum will help. There are 3 bottles in the game: 1 by the fire in the building in The Dark World (where the professor is) and 2 more in the cage in the Arsenal. Using this won't void the trophy and will only add in making sure Tasi doesn't lose her mind.

The Laboratory: Whether or not you take the treatment for Amari in this chapter doesn't matter. Choose whichever you wish.

The Ending: You want to go for the Provider ending for this trophy, as it's the only one where you'll make a "clean" escape.

Outside of all of this, just make sure you're staying in the light as much as possible. If you find yourself out of oil for your Lantern, matches will help a little bit with keeping your fear at bay, but you really want to be light torches in rooms as you seem them. As long as you keep your deaths/captures to a maximum of 3 and choose the proper ending, the trophy will unlock once the final cutscene plays out. You'll know if you've met the requirements for this in the ending scene with the Goddess. If she straight up calls you a Harvester, you're too far gone. If she says you don't have the heart to make Vitae, you can still get it so long as you don't get caught in her sight in the final "escape".

To get this achievement, you must not drive the character into rage, except for the moments when, according to the plot, in the cave we first meet a ghoul in a crevice, and when we kill Richard and the Doctor. You will also need to choose the ending where Tasi escapes into the portal with Amari. The achievement can only be obtained by playing on the classic difficulty level.
“Stoic” is the one who “stands”, even if everything around is falling apart, “Stoic” is the one who fulfills his duty to the end, even if there is no one to question him.

In the "Adventure" mode, the trophy is not given, you must complete it on the "Classic" difficulty level.
