How to unlock the Vendrick achievement in DARK SOULS II - Definitive Guide

Vendrick
Defeat Vendrick

Vendrick is the giant you walk past to get the King's Ring after defeating Velstadt The Royal Aegis in the Undead Crypt. Don't attempt to fight him though, beat the game first then come back.
(New Game + does not automatically start after beating the final boss)

Vendrick has very high defense so he will take some time to kill, additionally his attacks are likely to kill you in a single hit. However it is possible to lower his defense by having the unique items "Soul of a Giant" in your inventory (DO NOT use Soul of a Giant for the souls). Three Giant souls can be obtained from killing the giants in the giant memories and the one under Black Gulch.

For the fight I highly recommend a fully upgraded weapon and using a 100% block greatshield with high stability. A good shield will allow you to take a hit now and then. Surviving a hit is much better than the damage two handing gives you as this is very long fight.
For reference I used a lightning mastodon greatsword +10, with 40 strength 35 faith and was doing 260 damage a hit while two handing.

Patience is key for this fight so take your time and don't get greedy.
Once the fight starts sprint right to him (you might need to dodge through an attack) and hug the back of his left leg (opposite the side he holds his sword). This sweet spot is where you should stay for the entire fight, if you're lucky. If you strafe counterclockwise he shouldn't be able to hit you. Wait for him to attack then land a few hits and continue strafing. Keep in the middle of the area, stay calm and you should be fine.
In the event he jumps away or starts to hug a wall, sprint away, wait for an opening or for him to get into the middle, then sprint right back

The Achievement unlocks once you beat him.

If you want his soul and armor it's located behind a locked door a bit passed the second bonfire in Shrine of Amana. You have to have beaten him and be in human form for the door to open.

I don't know why but no matter what I do to my +10 Broadsword I only end up doing 15-16 damage to him. I have only 1 Giant soul since I thought I had to use them to progress the story. Any help?

While I wouldn't recommend it, you can obtain a 5th soul by killing the Ancient Dragon.

Is this easier on NG + since you can have more Giant Souls?

I'm not sure. I would think the benefit of having more giant souls would be very little in comparison to the difficulty of NG+. I would recommend doing everything possible before NG+.

What i can do is use a soul vessel and use the points to upgrade my HP to max and the rest to strength and dexterity

Is that maybe a good idea??

Stick with your build and use your most powerful spells. Keep distance from him and bait his attack, the second he finishes cast a spell and repeat. Make sure your staff or chime are fully upgraded and use the biggest shield with the most stability you can carry.

You get an upvote from me sir! Hugging his leg is a very good strategy. Counter clockwise strafing is the best, I found however when he turns right you should strafe clockwise briefly to get back behind him. Might be worth noting, for melee based characters it's worth having at least 2 weapons equipped as my Great Club broke midway through the fight and I had to equip a new weapon mid battle!! But yeah, great strategy. Just for the record I went in with 50Vgr 40End 42Vit 35Str (I used a Soul Vessel) Full Havels, Tower Shield+8 Great Club+10 and Claymore+10. I was 'fat rolling' but I rolled so little it made no difference.

Anyway, thanks again! +1

i had to rebuild my caster as a knight to beat this bastard.. hugging his leg def. good strategy.
also agree with ebonhawk about the shield, i carried grym greatshield and it saved my ass blocking a couple times, especially when he gets close to or on a wall and you try to squeeze behind him.

CONFIRMED: As of version 1.02 you can still get a SECOND 'Soul of a Giant' from the 2 Giants in Black Gulch. It makes the fight against the dragon unnecessary. (Honestly, I don't know why nobody gave any credit to XEHANORT989, since he mentioned this before.)

This trick gave me my fifth soul without fighting the dragon. With 5 souls, I was able to down him quite easily. Just use the aforementioned strategy of staying behind him while hugging his left leg. Just watch out for those distance attacks. They will ruin your day. He usually slashes twice while doing them. I found rolling past his right side to be the safest bet every time. Just don't forget that second slash, get a second roll in there just to be sure.
If you manage to dodge those, the rest of the fight is very straightforward.

I just beat him after obtaining the 5 souls (the dragon was a bitch but the other giant souls where easy) I'm a caster and I just stayed close to him and strafed right. But don't strafe too much behind him or he will jump back to give himself room to hit you. After he missed his attack I would hit him with magic. If he jumped back I would back away from him, give myself quite a bit of distance and wait for his charge attack, then I just timed the roll (or two) and went right to continue the strafing strat. You just REALLY want to avoid getting backed into a wall. Take your time and don't rush, time your estus heals just like your attacks.

I was SL 165 with a tower shield & judgement armor

If it wasn't clear: the bonfire you want to use an ascetic on for the second souls drop from the Giants is the first bonfire in Black Gulch (the one in a cave on your left as you enter.) A small warning though: I've read people say this trick didn't work for them. I merely confirmed it CAN still work, but if it doesn't, you'll end up with nothing but a much harder area in your NG+ playthroughs. Unless someone can confirm that this always works, try this at your own risk.

I just want to point you don't need Vendrick to be in the middle of the area. I managed to kill him with him camping next to a wall almost the entire fight. As Bendall17 says, the key is patience, learn when to roll and don't bother with your shield. I beat him using a Black Knight Ultra Greatsword +5 and 4 Giant souls. So happy! Thanks Bendall17!

In response to Hashmap, those Giants only drop a giant soul once per playthrough.

I just beat this as a Faith user, Emit force does more damage than the lightning spears, as stated in the wiki and its true.

If you went faith I'd recommend a dragon chime +5 or for hexes a Caitha's chime or Chime of Want.

Just to confirm as of today using an astetic on the Black Gulch Giants can net you that 5th Giant soul easy. Make sure it's the FIRST bonfire for that area that you use it on though. The second one pretty much just respawns the Pharro's Lockstone next to the bonfire and The Rotten again.

Good tactic. Spells were taking too long so switched to +10 Enchanted Falchion with 40 Faith. Took 5 to 10 minutes of hitting him in the back and dodging. Beat him with 1 more hit left on my Falchion before it would have broken :)

I think it's fine to use a shield for this fight depending on your stats. Make sure the shield has 100% physical resistance. I would recommend the Tower Shield, Gyrm Greatshield or Pursuer's Greatshield. With a shield I was able to survive some of his attacks which would have killed me otherwise. It's extremely difficult to complete the whole fight without getting hit. Sometimes he backs into a wall which makes it difficult to strafe around him. I think it's better to roll to avoid his attacks, personally (though you have to get the timing exactly right).

A new character or New Game+ are your best bet. There are 5 giant souls, 3 in memories on a giant corpse at the end of each, one on a giant under black gulch and one from defeating the dragon. If you're sure you had and used them it will take a very long time to beat him on your current playthrough.

Just did this last night - best strategy for me was to equip the red tearstone ring, get hit by the knights before his fog door so the ring activated, double hand my +10 lighting longsword (he has low lighting resist) and hug his legs. When you are in close combat his attacks are limited and easy to predict. If he wanders close to a wall and doesnt jump back start rolling back towards the middle of the area while keeping a lock on him so he walks towards you (he might throw a spell at you, just roll left or right then run in close to his legs again) . Goodluck all!!

Note beforehand: Do NOT use the item called Soul of a Giant, keep them in your inventory at all times!

A completely optional boss in the Undead Crypt, immediately accessible after you defeat Velstadt, the Royal Aegis. He's a docile giant of a man who only gets aggressive if you either attack him or wander too close to him while you fetch the King's Ring that you need to progress the story.

His attacks are;
Horizontal Slash(es) - He'll do a swipe in a 180 degree arc in front of him, mostly twice and sometimes even three times. Easiest way to avoid this is either by running immediately behind him where you're entirely safe or by backing off until he's done. He often does this attack after jumping backwards, so sprint right at him and stand behind him to elude it and be able to get 2-3 swings in. Blocking it isn't advised, it's pretty much a guarantee for him to do the third sweep that way and depending on your shield, the second or third will chop half your health away.
Vertical Slash(es) - Most common attack, he raises his sword overhead and bashes the ground with it, often twice in a row. Easiest attack to outmaneuver, simple strafe right and the moment he does the second smash, get two hits in.
Leaping Smash - A caster/rangers most frequent worry, he'll attempt to regain the close quarters battle advantage by leaping at you and burying his sword into the ground at your location, simply sprint left or right or if you're a gutsy melee kind of guy, straight at him. Long recovery time so get your series of hits in right after.
Curse Orb - Rather rare attack he only really uses if you bait the distance too often, otherwise he'll barely if not never use it. It has a big giveaway as his hand glows bright red and send a red orb your way that curses you and takes away a massive amount of your health.

Word of advice, don't attack him as of yet. You could, but let me just warn you right now, his defenses will be 32 times higher than they normally would be. Most weapons/magics will do anywhere between 3 and 25 damage a hit on him and he has 8500HP so you will more than likely be fighting him for close to 30 minutes. The only weakness he has is bleed but even then you're still looking at a 18-20 minute fight.

Just progress on and retrieve the Souls of a Giant, each weakens him significantly up to the point him being even weaker than most bosses. So to get the souls, get a decent bow and a truckload of poison arrows along with elemental variety arrows. If all else fails, use your poison knives if you ever managed to find a few as drops.

Soul of a Giant #1:
Cleverly hidden in a subterranean section of the Black Gulch. Near the second (semi-hidden) bonfire you can vaguely see a small ledge off the edge poking out of the darkness, close to the set of pools with the hand-like entities and the giant worms. Drop down to the first ledge, this one has a yet-locked door leading to Darkdiver Grandahl. Facing the door, gently and slowly walk off the edge to the right and you'll land on a piece of rock that almost seems unfit to stand on. Walk off the left side this time and you'll be at the cave entrance.

Depending on if you brought help, you'll face two Giants(3 if you got one summon, 4 if you brought two). The cave is pitch black and it's strongly advised to cheat these two by shooting one of them with arrows/poison arrows and backing off where you came from, once you reach the cave exit where you landed, the giant will begin backing away until you get close again or do sufficient damage to lure him back, he'll never go past the approach to the cave exit so consider it your safety zone. Melee combat is often suicidal, it can be done but for the sake of your sanity don't. Once the last of the giants dies, you'll get a key and the soul, ride the elevator out after grabbing the chest and goodies.

Soul of a Giant #2, 3 & 4:
Gotten from the story progression as you go through the Memories of Orro, Vammar and Jeigh with the Ashen Mist Heart. These three are practically unavoidable so not much explanation is needed, you go through three different "memories" of past events, riddled with considerably tough enemies but the toughest part of all is the tight time limit. At the end of both Orro's and Vammar's you'll find a corpse of a giant entity with the soul. Jeigh's trickier cause you have to defeat a Giant boss under the same time limit, once that's done you'll find the last corpse behind it.

Soul of a Giant #5:
Drops from the Ancient Dragon at the Dragon's Nest, the very same one who gave you the Ashen Mist Heart. He's one of the toughest bosses if not the toughest boss you'll face, he's definitely a boss you can defeat but one mistake and you will be dead. There's many strategies to defeat him, mine was to bait his leg stomp or his airborne fire breath and running towards the left of his tail, striking him once or twice when he lands and repeating that. YouTube is filled with handy videos, too many for me to suggest any of them. It really comes down to being lightweight and exploiting his weakness to lightning.

You don't need the fifth Soul, though. I did it twice with four and his defenses resemble that of a late game boss with higher-than-normal defenses(4 souls puts his defense multiplier at only x2), but hey we're all completionists here so why not, right?

After Vendrick dies you'll get the Trophy, but you might have noticed there's no loot. It's in a hidden chamber close to the second bonfire in the Shrine of Amana. Spot the sole pillar in the distance and look at the ground, you'll see a vague straight path leading to it. Break the vines and pop a Human Effigy if you're not human, head inside the door and his Soul will be on a very kingly looking chair. Continue further into the cave to find his entire armor set.

Also, you do not need to re-acquire new souls on further playthroughs, you can use the ones from previous NGs and they will still lower his defense. So if you want to fight him with standard defense but don't want to fight the Ancient Dragon, simply collect one of the others in your next playthrough.

For anyone still having trouble with this cheevo, I just got it and here is what I did:

Get at least 4 of the Giant Souls, of course.

If you have plenty of Soul Vessels, try reallocating to this setup;

VGR: 44
END: 3 (the amount of stamina doesn't matter much in this fight, stamina regen does)
VIT: 32
ATN: 10 (Was my default, same with FTH, these two are not needed)
STR: 50
DEX: 5
ADP: 19 (adjust this one to your liking)
INT: 4
FTH: 12 (See ATN)

My equipment was as follows:

Gyrm Great Hammer +10 (Two handed)
The Havel armor set, with the chest armor being +1.
Slumbering Dragon Shield (on the back)
The two main rings were the Ring of Blades and the Chloranthy ring.

The general idea is stay close to him at all possible times, behind his left leg as others have said. His overheads are very easy to circle strafe around and his horizontal swings have almost no chance of hitting you if you are behind the leg properly. I found it best that when he jumps away, I close the distance as soon as possible. His running attacks are his most dangerous by far so preventing that run is key. With this setup and strategy, I beat him in probably 5 minutes or less, if even that long, with just the standard attack and with no need to repair mid-battle. I was stunned by how effective this all was.

Vendrick is the undead King of Drangleic that you see wondering around aimlessly after you beat the boss Velstadt in the Undead Crypt. You do not want to fight him when you see him though because he has a 30x defense bonus multipler and will take forever to kill. What you need to do is gather the Souls of the Giants in order to weaken his defense bonus. You get 4 Souls of the Giant automatically through Story progression after you acquire the Ashen Mist Heart (See The Heir trophy for the videos on where to get the Souls of the Giants). This is good enough to fight him and beat him with ease but getting the 5th Soul of a Giant will make him even easier. In order to get the 5th Soul you will have to kill the Ancient Dragon. Yes, the giant dragon that gives you the Ashen Mist Heart. This is no easy task but it is doable so it's totally up to you what you want to do. I've uploaded 2 videos of beating the Ancient Dragon and beating Vendrick with all 5 Giant Souls for reference. Having all 5 Giant souls will allow your weapons to do their base damage to Vendrick.

Optional. King Vendrick is found at the end of the Undead Crypt after you defeat the boss there. He is not hostile to the player and will only attack if you do enough damage to him. The problem is that he has a ludicrously high defense UNLESS you seek out the five Giant Souls, which will reduce his defense by degrees until it is normal. Even then he can do a lot of damage with his physical attacks most of which are unblockable, or do a ton of stamina damage, so be on your toes. NOTE THAT YOU NEED TO KILL HIM BEFORE FIGHTING THE FINAL BOSS IN THE THRONE OF WANT. To get the five souls you need to do the following (once you have the Ashen Mist Heart):

•Dragon Shrine - Drop from Ancient Dragon.

•Memory of Orro - On the body of a Giant past two giants and two knights on Ballistae.

•Memory of Vammar - At the end guarded by a giant

•Memory of Jeigh - On a body of the giant after Giant Lord boss.

•Black Gulch - Requires defeating two giants in a hidden cave, reached by dropping down two more levels from the Forbidden Door that leads to Darkdiver Grandahl.

Now his defense will be normal and he only does four different attacks. If you are far away he will try and do a running leap to attack you, this is easily dodged and his sword gets stuck in the floor. He will sometimes shoot a cursed orb from his ring that can do massive damage, as well as cursing you (just for fun) but this can be rolled away from. His other attacks are either a large overhead smash or a horizontal attack that can be 1/2/3 hits. Stay close to his left leg and roll right when he attacks, then quickly hit him. Repeat until he is dead but don’t get overzealous. If you are human you can now open the locked door in the Shrine of Amana to get his soul and armor.

At the end of the "Crypt of the Undead" location After the boss Velstadt, the king's protector there will be a room with a huge zombie. This zombie is the king. There you will need to pick up the royal ring according to the plot. The zombie itself will not react to you and it is not necessary to kill it. If you start attacking him, after a certain time the entrance will be covered with fog and his health bar will appear. His attacks are quite primitive and slow, but very strong. Always go around him on the sides in the block so that he does not hit you with his sword. A missed attack is almost 100% death (when I got there, I had about 1200 HP. With 1 hit, it almost completely depleted my health bar).

Regarding the giant's souls. 3 of them are given out at the end of the giants' memories levels. 1 of which is plot-based, 2 are optional. The plot one, do not miss the optional one below through the gap in the wall from the fire, from which you go to the plot giant, and the last one is in the room behind the boss, the Pursuer. The 4th soul after killing 2 giants is a little lower from the place where you enter the covenant of the Pilgrims of Darkness and the last one from the Ancient Dragon... Here it’s really easier to kill a king than a dragon. 4 souls are enough to cause reasonable damage.

Initially, Vendrick's defense is increased by 32 times, which is why the damage is negligible. But each Giant Soul reduces this indicator by half.

It turns out:

1 Giant's Soul - Vendrick's defense x16

2 Giant Souls - Vendrick's defense x8

3 Giant Souls - Vendrick's defense x4

4 Giant Souls - Vendrick's defense x2

5 Giant's Soul - Vendrick's defense x1

I myself took it down with 4 souls, it’s much easier than without souls at all.

In order for attacks on the king to cause more or less adequate damage, you need to have a Giant's Soul in your inventory. If there are 5 such souls, Vendrick will take full damage.

I didn’t kill him in the first playthrough, I just missed him due to not knowing that he needed to be killed at all. I killed it in my second playthrough, but I already had 10 souls of giants and Vendrik folded up like a tent for me...

Tactics for melee warriors (I killed Vendrick this way).

You'll need a Life Ring +2 and a Third Dragon Ring, as well as a Clorantee Ring +1 and a Soldier's Ring +1. It would be best to have 26-30 HP (health), 40 STR and 30 DEX. You need at least 20 STK to comfortably pass the boss, because if you block blows, your stamina will be very drained. A good shield option would be Tower Shield +8. It is better to take a one-handed weapon. Drangleic Sword +2 will do just fine. You can remove the armor completely, but it is better to take the Drangleic set (at that time I had Heid Knight Helmet +10, Drangleic Chainmail +2, Drangleic Bracers +1 and Drangleic Leggings +2). Remember to stay behind Vendrick.

The simplest tactic.

The character must withstand at least one blow from him and not die. Plus, a shield is needed to withstand at least one blow, and so that the stamina remains. The most powerful one-hit weapon. Everything else can be removed - the more comfortable we are, the better.

We go to his arena. Then we either run to him, or wait until he comes to you. It is best to provoke him into a kvam jump. The easiest way to dodge a jump is to simply roll forward. (There is also the option that he will throw damage at you, but you can easily dodge it with the same somersault). After the roll, we find ourselves behind him. So, the safest place is behind his back, closer to his left hand. If you have your nose buried in his left buttock, then everything is correct.

In this position, none of his attacks will reach you. If his first blow does not hit the character, then the second and third blow will not follow, and he can be safely hit.

If Vendrick jumps back, it is better to run away from him and wait until he jumps at you; after rolling forward, you will immediately find yourself behind him in a safe zone.

If the tactics are so safe, then why do you need a shield and health over two hits? This is because if you fight close to the edge of the arena and Vendrick makes a rebound, he can crash into the wall, and then you will be right in front of his face. You can either dodge the blow, block it, or run back and wait.

Actually, using this tactic, I beat him for 15-20 minutes, one hit took off about 150 HP, there were 4 giant souls in my inventory.
