How to unlock the ...Flatout achievement in DiRT Rally 2.0 - Definitive Guide
UPDATE: Now that I've gotten around to finishing the last few challenges, some updates.
I wish I found this before I started, but here is a very useful message board thread from the folks at PSN profiles where a user Alexgaara compiled a list of individual stage times you need to clear every challenge. This is very helpful as it tells you when you are not going fast enough in a multi-stage event. Also important is that sometimes the game will glitch out and give you unbeatable AI times to deal with - by checking in with the "correct" stage times at the link you will be able to tell if you are being affected by a glitch and restart instead of wasting time and effort.

Otherwise, most of my other advice still stands. Unfortunately it is just one of those achievements where you just have to practice a lot to get better at the game, there are no real shortcuts.
Some more general tips - unless you are driving a 2000cc Subaru 22B WRC, you almost never want to be at full throttle. Keeping the throttle partially open and modulating the input will give you a lot more control and doesn't unsettle the car nearly as much, which is paramount when doing the challenges in the Metro 6R4.
On the topic of those challenges, the latest update eased the minimum damage requirements for those.

This is easily the hardest achievement in the entire game.
To unlock it you have to complete every scenario in the Colin McRae mode on Very Hard difficulty.
To change the difficulty setting you need to go to the Colin McRae mode, press Y, and dial AI Performance up to 91, which is the lowest setting that will qualify as "Very Hard".
As there is no definitive guide for completing racing events, I will provide some general tips that made things substantially easier for me.
First, and most obvious, is actual hardware. Unsurprisingly, having a actual good steering wheel really helps here. Understandably, most people will not have access to one, but it is still doable with a controller. For the purposes of this guide I will assume that you are using a controller.
Secondly, you will want to use custom setups as much as possible. For all events that only consist of one stage you are not given the freedom to set the car up and will have to use the setup that's provided by the developers. However, for events that take place over several stages, for example the one in Wales that is required for the "In Its Element" achievement, you can.
Ideally, you would want to use custom setups that are adjusted to your particular driving style, but if you are unsure of know how to adjust a car I definitely recommend you copy the setups provided by GTR Technical on their Youtube channel (I am in no way affiliated with them). https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ05BZF9F6q2xKyV6viCBGg/pla....
For scenarios that take place over several stages and that give you control over the setup make sure you never take on extra tyres as those add weight and slow you down. In 99% of cases you will also need to go with the soft tyre compound as those are the fastest. The only situations when a medium compound is preferable are when you have three stages back to back with no service interval breaking them up, and one of the stages is over 8kms in length. Otherwise soft tyres provide more than enough durability to last you the entire stretch.
Thirdly, the most generic tip I can give you is, if you're crashing too much, you need to slow down, and drive slower than you think you need to drive, it will not only help with staying on the road, but will also make you faster. Sounds counter-intuitive, but for most people this is the biggest problem as they constantly overdrive themselves.
Also, get into the habit of using both the throttle and brakes at the same time in the fast sections when it feels like the car is becoming unsettled. This is very useful for example in Spain, Greece, and Wales, where you have long, fast bits of 5 and 6 severity corners, not to mention crests and jumps, which all unsettle the car even more. Lifting off the throttle too much will unload the car and make it harder to steer, as well as loose the turbo pressure, slowing you down. Gently pressing the brakes while still pressing down on the accelerator will help steady the car and keep it pointing where you want it to.
Fourthly, especially if you are using a controller, TURN ON THE ASSISTS. When you're using a controller you are at a disadvantage in no small part because you have very limited ability to modulate your inputs, meaning steering angle is limited to just a tiny analogue stick which has no force feedback, and throttle and braking to just the two triggers, which only provide about 2-3 inches of travel. For this achievement I turned on Stability Control and Traction Control to 1 (setting it too high will actually slow you down in some places), and Anti-Lock Braking to 3. Anti-Lock braking and Stability Control do the most to negate the inherent disadvantages of using a controller with a game like this by helping keep the car straight and preventing brakes from locking up. NOTE THAT THIS APPLIES MOSTLY TO 4WD CARS. RWD cars, which in this case is Ford Sierra, would likely require higher Stability and Traction Control settings as these rely a lot more on modulating throttle and steering inputs than other types of cars. Play around in Custom Games to see what works best, but having Assists on will make things a lot easier.
Lastly, I would strongly recommend that you switch to the outside camera behind the car. This might sound jarring, but it actually gives you a lot more information that helps greatly, as well as improves your visibility during wet stages. Actual rally drivers use outside cameras because, while in an actual car they can feel the movement, in a videogame they can only rely on visual and sound cues. With outside cameras you can tell exactly when you start going over the limit of traction and get a much better idea of the dimensions and where you can fit the car.
If you have specific questions, I can try to answer them, but the rest depends on your skill and car control.
Good luck!

Note for those that had this bugged before this week's 1.14 update, you may have to complete Australia 1997 again:
The bug of not unlocking the achievements existed because the UI element told you it was completed, but the internal data the achievement was using was not on the same page. The UI code and scenario results code have been changed, now it should be impossible for all of the scenarios to show up as completed while the achievement is not unlocked. As expected, this can result in scenarios suddenly not showing up as completed anymore. Sorry about that 🙂
The fact that you saw this happen with the same scenario is very useful information, thank you for the feedback!

if you haven't started playing this racing add-on yet, please read some of my tips and recommendations:
-no racing game that you have ever played can match the difficulty of this add on
-if you are not a super rally driver or eSports player you should have enough free time available to complete this task
-to achieve this goal you will need to train for at least two hours every day for a month and a half
-if I had known in advance about the difficulties of this achievement, I would not have started this racing Supplement!that's fair!
-I don't recommend taking a long break between tests! it's relaxing! you need constant practice! one day of rest is the limit
-if I haven't added a new video within a week, I haven't sent this achievement to hell, it's just that I haven't been able to pass the next test yet and I'm working on it
I am a mid-level rally driver, gamepad control
depending on the degree of completion, I will add a video of all the scenarios! In my videos, you will see the recommended settings for the machine and the completion of the stage, as well as the goal of the stage
PART 1: THE EARLY YEARS 1984-1989
Scenario 1- #1-Scotland 1984:
finish this stage without suffering terminal damage
nothing complicated, just get to the finish line without crashing your car! The place at the finish line doesn't matter!I was the last to arrive!
difficulty: 1 out of 10
Scenario 1- #2-Scotland 1988;
Taking control on the final stage, win your first national championship by finishing at least 2nd
everything was completed on the third attempt!
there were three mistakes, but it didn't stop us from reaching the goal!
all
assistance is disabled,
stability control is 5,
and the clutch is on
difficulty 3 out of 10
Scenario 1- #3-Wales 1988
Maintain your current position and finish in the top 5 with a damaged engine mount
very hard short stage! mud and slush! the car is clearly not fast enough! and the handling is bad! I passed the stage only after I disabled absolutely all help!
stability control-1
clutch off
difficulty 5 out of 10
Scenario 1- #4-Sweden 1989
finish this final stage in the top 15 without suffering light mechanical damage to you car
not very difficult! it is better not to go very fast, but do not crash into snow blocks, otherwise you risk crashing the car and failing the test
the machine is very agile, so the stability control is maximum
all assistance is disabled,
stability control is 5,
clutch is off
difficulty 3 out of 10
Scenario 1- #5-New Zealand 1989
Undoubtedly-this is the most difficult test in the first part! I traveled all over New Zealand until I won the test)))
Starting on the penultimate stage with a 2 minute deficit , finish within 1 minute of overall 1st place
I feel very bad in New Zealand, two long stretches
11 and 16 kilometers, gradual loss of attention and concentration!
the slightest mistake and everything goes to hell!
Remember!!! Very important! my time is 8.55-stage 1 and 10.07-stage 2 - this is the lower limit of the norm, which you can not go beyond, otherwise you will fail the test!
The first stage solves a lot! you must be extremely fast!
You must be first with a gap of at least 45 seconds from the second place!
this is very important! A minimum of 45 seconds!
The longer the time gap the easier it will be for you in the second stage
And now the most important thing !!
this add-on has a strange glitch! You must complete any multi-stage event within one day!
You can't turn off the game, turn off the console, or even go To the main menu of the game, otherwise the target test time changes and becomes unrealistic to perform!
If you still catch a Glitch, reset the course of this event, restart the console and the game, and everything will return to normal
if the target time is the same as in my video then you are all right
explore the trails, explore dangerous places.
I was able to pass the test only on the fourth day of training, because I caught the above glitch!
Conclusion; long and hard, practice and practice again
recommended settings:
stability control-5,
traction control-5,
clutch enabled,
other assistance disabled
difficulty 7 out of 10
PART 2: RISING STAR 1991-1994
Scenario 2-#1
Wales 1991:
with heavy damage to the bodywork and wheel geometry of you car, finish the final stage without suffering terminal damage
get to the finish line without crashing the car, the position at the finish line is not important
I just drove like a turtle, so as not to crash the car on the night highway, 30 place I was quite satisfied)))
difficulty 1 out of 10
Scenario 2-#2
Scotland 1991:
finish 1st to take the overall victory on the final stage of this event
I was lucky to discover an achievement not long ago
I knew the route very well and completed the test very quickly
for those who are not familiar with this route I strongly recommend to watch my video in which I explain in detail how to deal with this route
recommended settings:
stability control-5,
traction control-4,
clutch enabled,
other assistance disabled
difficulty 5 out of 10
Scenario 2-#3
Sweden 1992:
Finish in 2nd place or above
Sweden 2 stages! this test has a very strict target time and you must be very fast! the situation is complicated by poor visibility!
So go to the graphics settings and set the value to 0, as shown in my video, this will slightly improve visibility! as I said, You have to be very fast and you need to disable all driving assistance, this will help you get even faster.
Try to win the first stage or at least lose to the leader no more than 3 seconds, in this case, the second stage will be much easier for you!
I apologize for not very correct driving, as visibility was poor and I was in a hurry
graphic settings-2:21 my video
all help is disabled
stability control-3
clutch enabled
difficulty 6 out of 10
Scenario 2-#4
Scotland 1992:
Finish 1st overall, despite a 2 second time penalty being applied to your time post-stage.
a very difficult test! a difficult narrow long track that is full of dangerous turns and obstacles!
to pass the test in the middle of the distance you need to win at least 5 seconds!
be careful in the second half of the distance not to crash into logs, which are very many on the side of the road! need more speed since you have a 2 second penalty, so I disabled all driving assistance!
Good luck and iron nerves!
all help is disabled
stability control-3
clutch enabled
difficulty 8 out of 10
Scenario 2-#5
Finland 1992:
Finish in the top 10 with heavy damage to your car, and a 2 minute penalty applied to your time post-stage
The test consists of three stages!
You must be very fast on the first stage, it is desirable not only to win, but also to win at least 23 seconds from the second rider!
this is the key to success!in this case you may lose a little in the other stages and still win the test
all help is disabled
stability control-5
clutch enabled
traction control-4
difficulty 7 out of 10
Scenario 2-#6
New Zealand 1993:
win the event taking your first international victory
The test consists of three stages!Tests in New Zealand are traditionally less difficult to determine time than other tests!
but don't relax!
Very long routes lull your attention and you lose concentration! personally, this is a difficult test for me because of very long runs!
Also, don't forget that you must pass all the multi-step tests in one day!see above!
in my video you will find a detailed configuration of the machine!
Your main task in the first stage is to win with an advantage of at least 23 seconds!
in this case, in the second and third stages, where the opponent is faster, you will be able to maintain the advantage and win the test
all help is disabled
stability control-3
clutch enabled
traction control-5
difficulty 6,5 out of 10
Scenario 2-#7
Wales 1993:
Dealing with an issue with your engine, finish the stage in under 06:44
Another test of time! Now in Wales!
This is not very difficult, although it requires some practice.
For maximum speed and maneuverability of the car, I recommend minimizing assistance when driving
all help is disabled
stability control-3
clutch enabled-
traction control
difficulty 6 out of 10
Scenario 2-#8
Monte Carlo 1994:
Starting on the final stage, finish in the top 10,beating the italian crew that are in hot pursuit
Very short special stage! By disabling all settings for driving assistance, I completed the task on the third attempt! A relatively easy test compared to the others
all help is disabled
stability control-
clutch enabled-
traction control
difficulty 5 out of 10
Scenario 2-#9
Greece 1994
complete all 3 stages without suffering mechanical damage
personally, I spent the entire test admiring this amazing country!
the test has no time limit!
Drive carefully, the main thing is not to break the car and fall into the abyss
difficulty 1 out of 10
Scenario 2-#10
Argentina 1994
Complete this stage in under 06:41
my advice is to disable all speed when driving!
the car will be more agile and faster!
The test time is not very difficult, the main thing is not to fly into the abyss and do
not break the car on the rocks
all help is disabled
stability control-
clutch enabled-
traction control
difficulty 5 out of 10
Scenario 2-#11
New Zealand 1994
Finish the stage in 1st place, beating your finnish rival
if you follow this achievement with me, you already know all the tracks in New Zealand!
a simple enough test if you turn off all driving assistance and be attentive at this long stage! Target time is 8: 21
all help is disabled
stability control-
clutch enabled-
traction control
difficulty 5 out of 10
1995-1998
WORLD CHAMPION
Scenario 3-#1
Monte-Carlo 1995
Finish 1st , ahead of your Spanish teammate
The level of difficulty, haha, is simply impossible!
It took me a month to pass this test! seven times I was close to success,
but I smashed the car's headlights and just couldn't see anything ahead and failed the test,
several times I crashed my car on the second stage and I didn't have enough speed because of a broken engine!
For the first two weeks I couldn't get used to driving on icy roads and moved like a cow on ice! Crazy test!
Although, to be fair, the track time is quite affordable, but the night and icy track make this test incredibly difficult! Now, in more detail:
-you will find a stage with two identical night routes(the second route is the reverse
-half of each route is an ice crust, the car plays on it and it constantly drifts, go through the route slowly at first to remember all the dangerous sections
-my recommendation is that when I turned off all driving assistance, the car started to go much faster and it became less skidding
-the car is not repaired after the first section, so try to move carefully, otherwise you will not pass the second stage and the test will fail
-try to move carefully, if you hit the car hard-the near and far lights will disappear and it will all be over, you will not be able to drive in pitch darkness
-the test consists of two stages,so try to complete it during the day in order to avoid the glitch I wrote about earlier
-my time is the lower limit of the norm
Good luck and iron nerves!
all help is disabled
stability control-
clutch enabled-
traction control
difficulty 9 out of 10

Hello, friends!
I am a mid-level rally driver, gamepad control
depending on the degree of completion, I will add a video of all the scenarios! In my videos, you will see the recommended settings for the machine and the completion of the stage, as well as the goal of the stage
Scenario #1-Scotland 1984:
nothing complicated, just get to the finish line without crashing your car! The place at the finish line doesn't matter!I was the last to arrive!
difficulty: 1 out of 10
Scenario #2-Scotland 1988;
everything was completed on the third attempt!
there were three mistakes, but it didn't stop us from reaching the goal! all assistance is disabled, stability control is 5, and the clutch is on
difficulty 3 out of 10
Scenario #3-Wales 1988
very hard short stage! mud and slush! the car is clearly not fast enough! and the handling is bad! I passed the stage only after I disabled absolutely all help!
stability control-1
clutch off
difficulty 5 out of 10
Scenario #4-Sweden 1989
not very difficult! it is better not to go very fast, but do not crash into snow blocks, otherwise you risk crashing the car and failing the test
the machine is very agile, so the stability control is maximum
all assistance is disabled,
stability control is 5,
clutch is off
difficulty 3 out of 10
Scenario 1- #5-New Zealand 1989
I was lucky to discover an achievement not long ago
https://www.trueachievements.com/a295882/pedal-to-the-metal-...
Good luck and iron nerves!
all help is disabled
stability control-3

difficulty 8 out of 10
Scenario 2-#5
Finland 1992:

to pass the test in the middle of the distance you need to win at least 5 seconds!
be careful in the second half of the distance not to crash into logs, which are very many on the side of the road! need more speed since you have a 2 second penalty, so I disabled all driving assistance!
Good luck and iron nerves!

Your main task in the first stage is to win with an advantage of at least 23 seconds!
in this case, in the second and third stages, where the opponent is faster, you will be able to maintain the advantage and win the test
all help is disabled
stability control-3

traction control-5
difficulty 6,5 out of 10
Scenario 2-#7
Wales 1993:
Dealing with an issue with your engine, finish the stage in under 06:44
Another test of time! Now in Wales!
This is not very difficult, although it requires some practice.
For maximum speed and maneuverability of the car, I recommend minimizing assistance when driving

Scenario 2-#8
Monte Carlo 1994:
Starting on the final stage, finish in the top 10,beating the italian crew that are in hot pursuit
Very short special stage! By disabling all settings for driving assistance, I completed the task on the third attempt! A relatively easy test compared to the others
all help is disabled
stability control-
clutch enabled-
traction control
difficulty 5 out of 10
Scenario 2-#9
Greece 1994
complete all 3 stages without suffering mechanical damage
personally, I spent the entire test admiring this amazing country!
the test has no time limit!
Drive carefully, the main thing is not to break the car and fall into the abyss
difficulty 1 out of 10
Scenario 2-#10
Argentina 1994
Complete this stage in under 06:41
my advice is to disable all speed when driving!
the car will be more agile and faster!
The test time is not very difficult, the main thing is not to fly into the abyss and do
not break the car on the rocks
all help is disabled
stability control-
clutch enabled-

difficulty 5 out of 10
Scenario 2-#11
New Zealand 1994
Finish the stage in 1st place, beating your finnish rival
if you follow this achievement with me, you already know all the tracks in New Zealand!
a simple enough test if you turn off all driving assistance and be attentive at this long stage! Target time is 8: 21

Good luck and iron nerves!
all help is disabled

clutch enabled-

I am a mid-level rally driver, gamepad control
depending on the degree of completion, I will add a video of all the scenarios! In my videos, you will see the recommended settings for the machine and the completion of the stage, as well as the goal of the stage
Scenario #1-Scotland 1984:
nothing complicated, just get to the finish line without crashing your car! The place at the finish line doesn't matter!I was the last to arrive!
difficulty: 1 out of 10
Scenario #2-Scotland 1988;
everything was completed on the third attempt!
there were three mistakes, but it didn't stop us from reaching the goal! all assistance is disabled, stability control is 5, and the clutch is on
difficulty 3 out of 10
Scenario #3-Wales 1988
very hard short stage! mud and slush! the car is clearly not fast enough! and the handling is bad! I passed the stage only after I disabled absolutely all help!
stability control-1
clutch off
difficulty 5 out of 10
Scenario #4-Sweden 1989
not very difficult! it is better not to go very fast, but do not crash into snow blocks, otherwise you risk crashing the car and failing the test
the machine is very agile, so the stability control is maximum
all assistance is disabled,
stability control is 5,
clutch is off
difficulty 3 out of 10
Scenario 1- #5-New Zealand 1989
I was lucky to discover an achievement not long ago
https://www.trueachievements.com/a295882/pedal-to-the-metal-...

Difficulty Very hard starts at 91.
In events where you can change settings, choose soft tires and do not take a spare tire.
Passage of the fifth and most difficult scenario of 1984-1989. in New Zealand with comments and tips in Russian: 1st section , 2nd section .
There is a bug with the timing of the AI stage. If there is more than one stage in an event, then after completing one and exiting the menu and leaving the game at the next stage, the opponents' time improves dramatically. This happened already in the first event with two stages; the opponent’s time improved by a minute. If you go through the event again, the opponents' time returns to normal. The exception is some events; you should exit after a stage by closing the game without exiting to the main menu (passed the stage for the required time, moved on to the next one, exit):
in Monte Carlo 1995 (2 stages), the opponent's time in the second stage may improve by approximately ten seconds, but may remain unchanged;
in Monte Carlo 1998 (4 stages), after exiting the second service section, the opponent's time dropped by a few seconds on the remaining two stages;
in the Sweden 2001 event (3 stages), the opponents' time improves by several seconds, you can go through each stage and exit the game;
in Wales 2005 (5 stages), if you exit, the opponents' time will deteriorate by a few seconds at each stage, it is enough to exit after the first stage, the opponents' time will deteriorate in the remaining ones.
On the forums they advise not to use the “Retire from event” button, after which a bug will definitely appear. If you want to leave the event early, first exit to the main menu, then in Scenario options select Abandon championship.
If you need to take a break so as not to waste time replaying a stage, do not exit the event, put the console into rest mode so that the game does not close, and in the energy saving settings, check the box next to “pause application”.
In events where you can change settings, choose soft tires and do not take a spare tire.
