How to unlock the The Puppetmaster achievement in Don't Starve: Giant Edition - Definitive Guide
Maxwell is unlock by completing adventure mode for the first time, to start adventure mode you have to find Maxwell's door in sandbox mode. If you are struggling to find it, you can craft a Divining Rod (1 Twig, 4 Nightmare fuel, 1 Gears) to help but it will also point towards any of the Things in the world.
Adventure mode is a mostly random collection of 5 back to back worlds you have to survive and complete. You complete them by assembling the 4 things (Box Thing, Crank Thing, Metal Potato Thing and Ring Thing) on the Wooden Thing and going through the portal to the next level. These worlds are generally harsher than sandbox mode and each has It's own gimmick. You start each level with the Divining Rod to help you locate the Things.
Maxwell's unique features are:
- He starts with a dark sword as well as night armor. He also starts with a book called the Codex Umbra which allows him to spawn shadow monsters to help him at the cost of nightmare fuel.
- He has high natural sanity gain but also low max health compared to other characters.
You can play adventure mode with any character you have unlocked by finding the door with that person in sandbox mode. I would personally recommend WX-78 because of his ability to eat gears and upgrade himself. The first level can be tricky but once you start getting a good stack of gears the game becomes a lot easier as each time he eats them he gains a large boost of hunger/health/sanity as well as upgrading the maximum values. This means you really don't have to worry about those things after the first world or so. Also on occasion when you do have to lower your sanity to pass an obstacle, it's very easy to instantly restore it to full so you don't have to deal with night monsters etc.
For your first couple or worlds when you're feeling confident you might want to prototype some useful recipes since they carry over between worlds, you lose all your inventory apart from 4 slots which you can choose at the end of the level by placing things into the assembled machine. Things like Log armor for protection, Bug Net/Miner's Hat for world 5, Beefalo hat to deal with winter levels and top hat to help with sanity losses are some examples. Most of the time in adventure mode It's best to just find the Things and get to the end. The only real need to explore beyond that would come from wanting to find Wes.
The first 4 worlds of adventure mode will be any of the following:
- A Cold Reception - If this is your first world as WX-78 the rain can be troublesome, I'd recommend just rolling again and trying to get a different world first. This world cycles rain and snow, and also has a crap ton of frogs that will damage you and steal your stuff. Overall the obstacles in the world aren't that bad though. If you get this level later as WX-78 is can actually be pretty good, a top hat can help with sanity loss and the health loss is negligible. If you're lucky you'll get hit by lightning and have become a super robot for a day (Glow and walk really fast).
- King of Winter - This can be kind of a rough level, It's permanent winter so you'll want to get some protection as fast as possible but at least you get given a heat stone and a rabbit earmuffs blueprint at the start. Get some earmuffs as soon as possible and ideally a beefalo hat later on. If this isn't your first level and you bring a Beefalo Hat with you it can make things a lot more comfortable. There are also Obelisks that will block your path until you have the required level of sanity. One requiring high and the other low. Mushrooms can be great at lowering Sanity. Raw green mushrooms provide a big sanity loss.
- The Game Is Afoot - This level will be winter for the first 11ish days so having a beefalo hat to start with is pretty great but the game does give you a winter hat at the start which is still pretty good, I also found a beefalo hat lying around in this level but that might not always be there. The point of this level is just that there are obstacles that block your path to each section like a small maze with tentacles but most can just be run by. This level is absolutely great for WX-78 since there is a large clockwork area with a lot of monsters, meaning you can a massive stack of gears and be more than set of the rest of the game.
- Archipelago - This level isn't too bad, It's split into a bunch of islands with Things on each one. You travel to each through wormholes. There are usually a good amount of supplies near the start so try to stock up.
- Two Worlds - This level is fairly straightforward to be honest. You start on a paradise type island with just a crap ton of supplies and some wormholes. So you'll want to stock up as much as you wish on food and supplies before jumping to the other island where all 5 things are located. You should be pretty strong and not lacking any supplies so it shouldn't cause you much trouble.
For the 5th world it will always be the Darkness level which as the name suggest is permanent night time. If you bring the right items (I recommend Miner's Hat & Bug Net) it honestly isn't that bad however as the world itself isn't that intimidating.
Regarding the items you can take to each world if you are taking my advice and playing WX-78 you will always want to take your stack of gears with you (up to 40). If you want to make level 5 easy then you should bring a Miner's Hat and a Bug Net. If you use your net right at the start of the level you can get 10 fireflies which is enough duration to refill your Miner's hat 4 more times, each firefly adds 40% to it so just make sure you add them before the Hat drops below 1%. Other than that I took silk with me which I think was an ok choice since I could make Top Hat's and other things but not entirely necessary. Also all 3 of my first levels had winter and I took a Beefalo Hat with me each of those times which made things a lot easier.
Backing up saves - Backing up your save from the ps4 system to the cloud and reloading when you die can make the whole experience a lot less frustrating. You can do it any time you reach a new world or are comfortable with the progress you've made. The game also only saves when you select "save and quit" from the pause menu. Which means you can actually save in game, explore large areas and then close the application without saving and reload to go back to where you were before having used no resources.
Here is what Maxwell's door looks like (It will always be in a ring of trees/evil flours):
Complete Adventure Mode to unlock Maxwell.
You enter Adventure Mode by finding Maxwell's Door in Survival Mode. There are 5 chapters and an epilogue where you meet and unlock Maxwell. If you die in Adventure Mode you will return to Survival Mode outside Maxwell's door as if you had never entered. To complete a chapter you must complete (Find the Wooden Thing and combine it with the Box Thing, Ring Thing, Metal Potato Thing, and Crank Thing) and use the teleportato.
You will start with nothing, not even unlocked recipes. However when traveling from one chapter to the next you can bring 4 items (character specific items will respawn so you don't need to take them with you). Any learnt recipes, and any structures you have created but not placed (highlighted as light blue in menu).
The first 4 chapters will be one of the following:
COLD RECEPTION
May appear on Chapters 1 - 3.
This Chapter Rains like crazy, not a great level to start on if your the robot.
KING OF WINTER
May appear on Chapters 1 - 4.
This Chapter is permanently winter, though you do start with a thermal Stone and Rabbit Earmuff Blueprints. There are also obelisks that block your path that you may have to lower by either increasing or decreasing your sanity.
Tip
- Stockpile green cap mushrooms to easily lower/raise Obelisks. (-50 Sanity raw, +15 Sanity Cooked).
THE GAME IS AFOOT
May appear on chapters 1 - 4. The first 10 days are winter. "Things" are protected more so than usual.
Tips
- Spider Den's use fire or traps.
- Hound Mound's just run. Hounds slow down to attack and you can easily avoid them.
- Tailbird Nest's wait for dusk or night as Tailbird's will be asleep at this time.
- Killer Bee Hive's Beekeeper hat will decrease possible damage.
- Clockwork Monsters armor up, or use a Beefalo horn or Spiderhat to get them to take on the clockwork monsters for you.
- Swamp Lots of tentacles, armor up and run.
ARCHIPELAGO
May appear on Chapters 1 - 4. There are six islands with every island except for the one you start on having a "thing" for the teleportato. You have to travel through wormholes to reach the other islands.
Tips
- Use the tentacles on swamp Island to kill Spiders and Merm's.
- Be careful when using Wormholes, You may wake up surrounded by enemies.
TWO WORLDS
May appear on Chapters 3 - 4. A safe main island devoid of "things" and a second island reachable via Wormhole full of "things." There are also Damaged Wormholes which travel only one way.
Tip
- Stock up on the main Island and prepare for battle before visiting the 2nd more deadly Island.
The 5th chapter will always be DARKNESS. It's Always chapter 5, permanent night. Sanity will constantly fall and there is not much food.
Tips
- Prepare in the previous chapter.
Potential Items you want to take along with you:
- Large stack of Long Lasting food (gears if your WX-78is perfect).
- A Miners Hat, or the Gold to make them.
- Bug Net or the Spider Webs to make them
- Fireflies to restock Miners Hat.
