How to unlock the When I'm With You achievement in DOOM II (Classic) - Definitive Guide
Here it is by popular demand! All 30 MAPS in Doom II (Classic) done solo on nightmare difficulty.
General tips:
1) Revenants and Mancubi are generally your friends on these maps, they tend to cause a lot of in-fighting and can wipe out rooms of demons.
2) Most maps are not too bad.
3) Your worst enemies are shotgunners and chaingunners. Both of these enemies will shred you if left alive. Prioritize these guys first if there is a group of demons.
4) Doom II (Classic) expects you to know how to use the strafe jumps as well as normal gap clearing. When there is a jump I make that looks tricky go load up that level in single player on I'm Too Young to Die and kill all enemies in that location and practice, practice, practice until you get it.
5) Like Doom (1993) taking too long in a level can make it unfinishable due to the large number of respawning demons.
MAP 1 (00:00)
Very straight forward, run to the end.
MAP 2 (00:24)
Another straight forward level, getting the red key can be tricky as here is a lot of shotgun guys waiting for you here. Take them out one by one and grab the key. The same applies to the blue key, take your time (not too much though) down the hallways killing them. Once you have the blue key you are home free.
MAP 3 (03:32)
Before even attempting this MAP watch the video, more specifically the jump at 04:07-04:10, you will need to perform this jump in order to move forward as this level is insane if you do not. Once you have the jump down the rest of the level is easy.
MAP 4 (05:10)
Start off by opening the door in the starting room, shoot down the hall at the chain gunners to attract their attention. Hide in the room for a moment to let them move towards you. After several seconds check the hall and kill them if they are close enough. Take your time down this hall as running in meaninglessly wastes dropped weapons and time. Once clear, hit the switch in the upper room and make your way to the side rooms. This first part is the hardest. Once you have the red key you are home free. From the start head into the red door on the right, clear the chain gunners on the ledges before trying to finish the level as they will make your life a nightmare. You can die as much as you need to here as enemy respawns seem to be at a low in this room.
MAP 5 (09:00)
The red and blue keys are the most difficult rooms in the level. Once you get the blue key you are set.
MAP 6 (12:52)
Oh boy, this level can be quite the pain to finish, expect to die a lot while making some progress. First make your way around the left side clearing the shotgun guys until you get to the elevator. Get on it and head to the right corner facing the arachnotron, it will be unable to hit you while staring here. Once the elevator starts moving up face left, once the elevator is at the top jump through the gap to the switch. Quickly get the blue key, if you fail at this restart the level. The red key, only attempt this area if you have more than 40 health, otherwise let yourself die and come back. If you do not complete this first try you will have to restart the level as all the platforms containing enemies will have lowered. After the red key things become easier, make your way to the yellow key, once you pick it up a shortcut will open up from the start to this area so death is not game ending at this point.
MAP 7 (20:42)
The level exit is only reachable after all arachnotrons have been killed, this is normally not a problem on any difficulty except on nightmare. If you do not kill all of the arachnotrons fast enough you will likely not finish the level. Start the level by running around with the super shotgun taking pot shots at each mancubi, try to hit each one an equal number of times to lower their health. Along the walls hit each switch to lower the platforms, after a few laps grab the rocket launcher and kill the mancubi. After all of them are dead grab all of the power items (mega sphere, plasma gun, etc) and quickly take out each arachnotron. If mancubi start respawning ignore them because you will not have enough time to kill them.
MAP 8 (23:05)
Very easy, once you get the key in each room do not hit the switch to open the doors, instead let yourself die.
MAP 9 (24:25)
Probably the hardest level in the set. The beginning will have you throwing yourself at the switches in order to progress, there are no tricks here or real strategy's. Getting the yellow key is going to require a few deaths in order to clear some of the imps to hit the switch. Once you have the yellow key you are home free.
MAP 10 (29:45)
Follow the path I take to grab the blue and yellow keys. The only tough part is the exit, once you open the door leading to the exit a cyberdemon will spawn behind you. If you are lucky you can hit the switch and be done. If not you need to pull the cyberdemon out into the previous room and head up the stairs in the back to make him teleport away.
MAP 11 (00:00)
-You will want to weaken the spectres by heading down where the shotgun is and shooting 4-5 shots at them before going into the blue door.
-You will also want to either kill or weaken the pain elemental through the grate before going into the blue door.
-Lower the platform by using the action button in the corner of the platform in the pit before picking up the invulnerability sphere.
-You have 1 shot at finishing the level after picking up the sphere.
-Do not kill the arachnotron through the bars.
-After hitting the switches a new arachnotron spawns in.
-Use the rockets to kill the arachnotron.
MAP 12 (04:09)
-Pretty simple level.
-Brute force the end by slowly killing the Cacodemon and hitting each switch to finish the level.
MAP 13 (14:18)
-Relatively straight forward level.
-You must get the invulnerability orb, get the rocket launcher, then make the jump, grab the second orb, then get the yellow key in one swift run.
-If you fail at any point starting from the first orb to getting the key you will have to restart.
MAP 14 (17:04)
-At the double doors shoot the revenant and move back to pull it out of the doors.
-The archvile is the biggest pain here, spend several deaths damaging it until it dies. Then run through to grab the blue key.
MAP 15 (20:13)
-Secret Exit counts towards the achievement so take it as it is easier than the normal one.
-Jumping to the switch for the invulnerability sphere room is the hardest part. I suggest practicing the jump in single player on I'm to Young to Die.
MAP 16 (24:51)
-You need to kill a few imps by the blue key in order to make it up to it.
-Getting the red key is the most tricky part here.
-Save the invulnerability sphere for the exit area.
MAP 17 (27:27)
-This is a tough level.
-After getting the red key take a death.
-The cyberdemon in the middle is both a pain and a useful enemy. You will have to manipulate his placements every once in a while to put him in a useful area.
-The arachnotron by the yellow key can sometimes be annoying. I found that jumping down left generally worked more often.
-This will take quite a few deaths to beat the level.
MAP 18 (38:16)
-Very quick and easy!
MAP 19 (39:12)
-You only need 2/3 keys here.
-Level is pretty straight forward.
MAP 20 (43:04)
-Most of this level is going to be brute forced.
-You do not need to take the lava teleport (to the left at the start) if you can make it through in the first few tries to the room with the plasma gun.
MAP 21 (00:00)
-Simple level.
-Nothing to difficult here.
MAP 22 (03:29)
-Every run attempt will need you to get the plasma gun.
-There are chain gunners galore here and they will kill you fast.
-General strategy for each teleportation into the central room is to kill as many gunners as possible.
-After you get the red key head to the side room at the start and grab the supplies to attempt the run to the exit.
MAP 23 (10:02)
-Not so much fun.
-Pain Elementals and Lost Souls do not respawn when they die so kill them all off before going forward.
-The Mancubus is your best friend here, it will fight demons along the edges and will help clear out the lost souls and Pain Elementals for you.
-Let the arachnotrons and Spider Mastermind infight before getting the yellow key.
-The part with the revenants and archvile is the hardest here. Run for the BFG quickly, grab it and start firing
-Archviles can not hit you if they lose line of sight.
-Keep holding forward when going into the teleportal near the end or you will die.
MAP 24 (14:50)
-Not too bad of a level.
-Again, Lost souls do not respawn.
-If you can try to lure some of the Cacodemons away in the blue door room.
-The room with the pinkies and red keys is by far the hardest part.
MAP 25 (20:40)
-One of the more tricky levels to do.
-Getting the blue key is not too bad.
-The run to the exit is somewhat luck based, thankfully taking a long time here is fine.
-Always use the BFG as it helps with clearing the rooms, you only get 2 shots with it each time though.
MAP 26 (24:28)
-Another pretty easy level.
-The yellow key is a little tricky to get however, you will need to manipulate the baron to the right side of the walkway.
MAP 27 (31:07)
-Pretty easy level.
-The only tricky part here is the room with the revenants and the adjoining room with the BFG.
MAP 28 & 29 (33:22)
-You need to do MAP 28 in order to even have a fighting chance to do MAP 29.
-You need the following items before going to MAP 29: Rocket Launcher, Plasma Gun, BFG, Super Shotgun, minimum 30 rockets, 600 energy ammo, 200 health and 200 armour.
-The route I have planned on 28 gives all of these items can be completed in less than 2 minutes once you know the route.
-MAP 29, by far the hardest level in the lot by a very large margin.
-This took me about 30 attempts with this route I show (I did like 200ish to learn the level itself).
-The plasma gun is your best friend here, it is extremely deadly and stuns enemies as well.
-Pay attention to where weapon swaps happen and learn how many button press are needed to switch to your next weapon needed.
-The rising walkway with Cacodemons is your first major hurdle to practice. Try to make sure your rockets are not wasted here too much as you need at least 10 later on.
-To make the jump position yourself in the middle of the torch across the way and move forward.
-It is super easy to fall off by accident or when you get hit by attacks, falling here is almost a guaranteed restart.
-Do not pick up the blue orb or blue armour here as well, this is a restart if you do.
-In the next room use the plasma gun to kill everything. Kill the Pain elemental and lost souls first before dropping down.
-Kill the archvile in the next room with rockets.
-Having 200 health and 200 armour is ideal before hitting the teleportal to the big room. However, 180 health and 180 is acceptable as well and can get you through to the end.
-You also need over 500 energy ammo for the next part.
-This is the hardest part of the level, do it exactly how it is shown, this will take practice and will be the point of the most frustration.
-The final run is 100% luck if you get to the exit.
-Aim for having around 70 health and 70 armour when entering the teleportal.
-Do not fall into the hole with the cyberdemon, you will be very sad if you do (I was when it happened to me).
MAP 30 (40:19)
-Simple enough level.
-Shoot rockets into the hole in the demons walls forehead.
-A trick I used was to shoot at rocket about when the rocket launcher top was at about chin level on the demon.
-Practice when to shoot the rockets on single player on the easiest difficulty to get a feel for it.
Good luck for those wanting to get this achievement!

Finally beat map 23, pro-tip: there's a megasphere right after the ledge with all the pinkies, if you get this, and then get the rocket launcher straight ahead after, you're in much better shape for the rest of the level. I got the megasphere, then the rocket launcher, then used the RL on all the imps in the room with all the rockets, loaded up on rockets, grabbed the blue health to get back to 200% health, then (once the spiders were infighting) ran to the yellow key and let rockets fly at the revenants & such leading up to the BFG. Still hard, but much, much easier than trying to brute force your way through with the shotgun.

With exception from 13, 23 and 29, all other levels can be brute forced solo even if you miss an item or die after getting it. I died some times in places where the guide says it is a restart situation, and still could do it.
With the update, many levels are way more difficult and I would recommend looking into guides that show location from items like health, mega armor and others. I did many stages getting better guns or items compared to the guide, or by leaving the items for later and brute forcing a little more before getting them.
For 29, I did it with one person helping me, basically by being a decoy for the cacodemons. Also, befofe you go down, you want to have the area cleaned of any shotgunner and machine gunner. And later, before you take the teleport to the big room, you want all cacodemons that are on the left, just outside of the room, dead. If you kill them with the other account before teleporting, they won't follow you there.

*This achievement is now unlockable but seems to still be buggy. Several people (myself included) are having some levels not track. Based on comments, playing with a guest instead of a second account may cause problems, as does player 2's controller dying. If it glitches on you, try fully deleting your game data, including from the cloud, and starting again. You will have to repeat all the levels, but your tracker should go up again once you pass your previous percentage*
I found that using speedrun tactics helped greatly for many missions. A speedrun of the whole game is linked below. Not all of the tricks can be used on this version, but it's still very helpful.
You can respawn infinitely in co-op. For some levels this makes it relatively easy. More weapons will also be added to the maps that were not previously there. You can also complete the levels in any order.
If you havent run through the missions before, it's almost mandatory to play through on an easier difficulty to learn level layouts- Doom 2 has a lot of rooms and areas that are not required to beat levels.
For some parts of levels, your best strategy is to just run and gun as quickly as possible just to grab a key or switch, then just reset. Example below.
Others (like the smaller corridors of the Citadel) it can be worth going a little slower and clearing the enemies. I also used many if my deaths to set up one good run through an area - strategically killing enemies and leaving their weapons in the ground, etc.
Other times you'll just be running through the same section over and over again until the stars line up. I did the ending section of Tenaments at least 100 times.
The easiest way to beat 29 (and maybe only way) is to play level 28 first:
Here is a run by Dabima through map 29, by far the hardest if you’re going through solo.
Be prepared to die a truly excessive amount - some of the levels on co-op nightmare are really ridiculous. I have been playing Doom for several decades and this achievement is a struggle solo. If you have 3 friends to do it with, it's probably not too bad.

Devil D, I might have a solution for you because my progress stopped counting in Doom 1 nightmare and this fix did allow me earn the achievement but its not going to sound nice at all. The only way I found to get my percentage to count again was to completely erase my profile information off of the cloud. Basically you go into "manage game" for doom 2, from home and go to saved data. And find where your profile is under saved data. Then click on it and it will ask if you want to delete from console or everywhere and choose everywhere.
This method did allow me to actually earn my achievement but there's a catch. Your progress towards the achievement is set back to 0. The achievement tracker will still read the percentage that you had before, in this case 90%, but I can vouch that the tracker might as well be at 0. You have to beat every level again on nightmare. Your tracker will only go up again once you've completed the next level after reaching 90% level completion again. So in this case you have 27/30 levels completed. The tracker would only finally go up, after deleting your save from the cloud, once you've completed 28/30 levels. I highly doubt you would even want to do that however given how difficult some of the levels are to complete, but I'm just giving you my two cents just in case.

Yeah. I have no problem with how difficult it is really; I just hate it when devs put in achievements with no thought. Like I seriously doubt they had any expectation of people having to run through 2 levels before attempting it.
That being said, I did beat it last night. Just as a tip for anyone else, if you can find even ONE person to help you, it is significantly easier to get through most of the level. You want to run through 27 & 28 as usual, and follow the same route through 29 while using the 2nd person as a meatshield. Basically, for most of the level you want player two to just distract as many cacodemons as possible in the open area with the soulsphere. It makes both the rising bridge section, and the run back to the soulsphere and mega-armor a lot less risky. You will typically only ever have a couple cacodemons on you at once this way instead of all of them at once. Once you are about to go into the last teleporter to the run up to the exit, have player two distract/kill as many enemies as possible in the beginning area(especially the chaingunners). At the end section I took minimal damage running up this way. Of course, the last section with the three switches will still be hard this way. Not much is really gonna make that part easier. Although with a meatshield you at least shouldn't have any cacodemons chase you all the way over there.
I don't have the whole recording of my run, but I made a minute long game clip after beating it. It basically shows just how many enemies player 2 is able to keep busy. It also shows how extremely lucky I got on the last bridge with the Barons on it lol.
