How to unlock the The Golden Child achievement in F1 2013 - Definitive Guide
Note that you do not have to be the world's greatest driver to earn these, but the tests are not a walkover either. It will take practice in learning how to steer with a sensitive Xbox controller. Watch the videos to learn various techniques. Pay attention to the lessons of hitting your turn apexes (those white boxes at the tightest part of the corner) and tire spinning when coming out of a turn. It will be very valuable to shave off hundredths of a second.
Assists are helpful to turn on, but realize that the car will fall below optimum performance on some corners if the AI brakes too much to play it safe.
To earn this, as stated, you must pass all 11 Young Driver tests and earn a gold medal time in each. In most of the tests, however, there are extra requirements that must be met in order to pass. I will only list times necessary for gold medals, since that's what this achievement needs.
(1) Straight Line Test:
• Top 160 MPH/258 KPH
• Stop in the red zone at the end
• Complete in 19.500 seconds
Hold down the throttle until the "200" board on the right side of the track, then slam on the brakes.
(2) Hairpin Turn Test:
• Hit 4 markers – 1 at start, 2 guidelines, 1 turn apex
• Top 185 MPH/298 KPH
• Stop in the red zone at the end
• Complete in 27.000 seconds
Make sure you watched the video on turning optimally. Go over each of the boxes, then throttle it once you have the car past the apex. Be sure to not oversteer as the car will slip with the throttle active. You will be introduced to flashbacks coming out of the corner via a popped tire. These will be very handy in future tests in case you make an egregious error. Once again, brake near the "200" board.
(3) Baseline Performance Test:
• Hit 3 markers – all turn apexes
• Stop in the red zone at the end
• Complete in 34.000 seconds
Time to chain some turns together. This is an extended test #2. If you have the guides on, follow them as closely as possible. Don't attempt to cut a corner too tight, else the challenge might null or the car might spin.
(4) KERS & DRS Systems Check:
• Use both KERS & DRS
• Do not touch any of the opponents
• Finish first
• Complete in 16.700 seconds
A couple tips on using KERS since there is a limited supply. In this challenge, you will gun it all to boost, but in any other situation, it's best to only use it after straightening out of a turn in 1st/2nd gear to get back into 3rd/4th gear. It will refill on each lap, and won't rollover, so if you find yourself with a little at the end, use it all up before the line.
(5) KERS & DRS Performance Test:
• Use both KERS & DRS
• Do not touch any of the opponents
• Finish ahead of at least 1 of the 3 cars
• Complete in 36.500 seconds
Pass the first car on the straightaway, then take it easy rounding the corner. Any collisions will null the test. You only need to beat one car, after all.
(6) Wet Track Braking Test:
• Stop in the red zone at the end
• Complete in 21.000 seconds
Same test as #1, but on a wet track. Allow yourself a few extra feet to brake.
(7) Wet Weather Test:
• Hit all 8 turn apexes
• Complete in 44.000 seconds
Tests 7, 8 and 9 follow the same section of the course, so learn to anticipate which turns are upcoming. This will be the first real challenge for inexperienced drivers. Mind the wet terrain and give yourself a wide berth when turning. The car WILL spin if you attempt to turn a corner too tight. The turn guideline assist is recommended if you are having trouble understanding how fast the car can handle in different size corners.
(8) Racing Line Test:
• Stay below 100% deviation
• Complete in 41.000 seconds
A frustrating test since it demands nearly perfection from the driver without sacrificing much speed. The car must follow the guideline between from wheel to wheel, brake at red sections until the line turns green, then accelerate through the turns. The clock is a little forgiving, but don't overestimate how much time you have remaining.
(9) Tire Wear Test:
• Hit all 8 turn apexes
• Complete in 42.000 seconds
As long races go on, tires tend to wear down. This test will show you how annoying that is by sliding a lot more than usual. In order to hit the turn apexes, you will have to give yourself wide berths to allow for minimal corner cutting. Any errors will cause the tires to slide, though they will do it a little anyway because of their condition.
(10) Timed Lap Test
• Hit all 18 turn apexes
• Complete in 1:50.000
Now to separate the scrubs from the worthy. It is highly recommended to set brake assists off or as low as possible for these final two tests, because you need every millisecond possible. Be sure to maximize KERS & DRS performance. As a guideline, you should be entering the first DRS zone in under 40 seconds, the second DRS zone under 1:00 and the beginning of the final section (turn 14) by 1:15.
(11) Evaluation Test
• Complete in 3:35.000
There are no more apex requirements, but you'll wish they were still there instead of the AI drivers you'll meet on this final challenge. You'll only encounter three, but they will give you trouble on some of the turns and passing them outside of DRS zones. In order to meet gold you have to pass all of them by a good margin before the finish. The lead car is NOT the reference point for a gold medal. You need to complete your first lap under 1:50.000 to have any hope of completing this challenge, following these time checkpoints and opponent passes. These are notable due to technical S-bends or hairpins occurring that a lot of time/speed can be lost in:
DRS Zone 1, Lap 1 @ 0:40.000
AI Car 1 pass in turn 9 or 10 (just before DRS Zone 2)
DRS Zone 2, Lap 1 @ 1:00.000
AI Car 2 pass in turn 17 or 18 (entering the hotel area)
AI Car 3 pass in turn 21 (final turn of lap)
DRS Zone 1, Lap 2 @ 2:25.000
DRS Zone 2, Lap 2 @ 2:45.000
Braking assists set at or above "medium" will not allow your car to move quickly enough for the goal time. Keep to your lines, don't slide through turns and put the pedal to the metal for one last hurrah.

EDIT:
For this you need to achieve Gold Medals in all of the 11 challenges in the Young Drivers' Test. You do not have to earn them first time round, you can skip a few and then go back to them later. To earn a Gold Medal you have to satisfy two conditions: one earn all Chevrons (if there are any) and two you must complete the challenge under a certain time. Also, do not corner cut! Sure you can ride some corners more aggressively than you might expect, but if you do get a 'Corner Cutting Warning' then this will void your chances of getting a Gold Medal. If this does happen, either use a Flashback or Restart the Challenge. Lastly, make sure you have the Braking Assists turned off, there is no way that you can earn any Gold Medals with them on.
Gold Medal Guide
Straight Line Test
Gold Medal Target Time: 19.500
A very easy challenge, as soon as the lights go out, go full throttle straight ahead. Keep the car straight and when you reach the 200 meter board, start braking and stop still in the Red Zone.
Hairpin Turn Test (0.50)
Gold Medal Target Time: 27.000
This can be quite a tricky test, but make sure you go through all of the Chevrons. There is one at the start; one at the apex on the hairpin; another one on the apex as you exit; you will earn one for using a flashback after the 'staged' puncture; one where you attain 185MPH speed and the last one is for stopping in the Red Zone. Tip: when stopping in the Red Zone, brake at the 200 Meter Board and whilst braking, make sure you rapidly downshift as well – this will make you stop quicker. You can manually downshift even if you are using Automatic Gears.
Glitch: for some people this test has randomly glitched, whereby when you attain 185MPH speed on the straight, it is too late to brake in time for the Red Zone. There is not a remedy for this, only to reinstall the game and try again. Common trends suggest that it is the Mclaren where it is more than likely to glitch, so you may well want to opt for another car, just to play it safe.
Baseline Performance Test (1:38)
Gold Medal Target Time: 34.000
You can easily miss out on the Gold Medal time by being sluggish through the corners. Collect all 3 Chevrons on the apexes and try to negotiate the corners as quick as possible. It may take a few attempts in order work out braking points etc. Then on the straight, keep the car stable, so no swerving around. Then come the Red Zone, brake and downshift manually for optimum braking.
KERs & DRS Systems Check (2:16)
Gold Medal Target Time: 16.700
Very easy, as soon as the lights go out accelerate and use all of your KERs. Then as soon as you enter the DRS Zone, open your rear wing. Do both perfectly and you will pass the test.
KERs & DRS Performance Test (2:51)
Gold Medal Target Time: 36.500
Overtake the three cars, using all of your KERs and DRS in both zones. A very easy challenge, I manage to overtake all 3 before the halfway point. Also, do not hit the cars, this will invalidate the test.
Wet Track Braking Test (3:42)
Gold Medal Target Time: 21.000
A very easy challenge, simply full throttle on the straight, no swerving, brake and downshift for the Red Zone. You will have to brake a fraction earlier than you normally would do if it were in the dry.
Wet Weather Test (4:09)
Gold Medal Target Time: 44.000
It may take one or two attempts in order to succeed with this one. Every corner will have to be executed perfectly if you want to earn Gold. Note: you will have to be much smoother when applying the throttle when exiting the corners, due to the wetness of the track. If applied too greedily, then you are liable to spin due to the lack of traction. When negotiating the long right-hander for the 2nd and 3rd Chevrons, make sure you are flat out! Then for the 5th and 6th Chevrons, do not brake for the corner, just carefully lift off the throttle.
Racing Line Test (4:58)
Gold Medal Target Time: 41.000
You've got to be really confident with this one, keep to the racing line, it is not really about speed, timing is not an issue, so you can afford to be cautious. Just make sure your deviation does not go over 100% otherwise you will not earn the Gold Medal.
Tyre Wear Test (5:45)
Gold Medal Target Time: 42.000
Same principle as racing in the wet. Be very careful when applying the throttle, as you may spin due to the worn tyres. Also the handling is slightly different, it is less responsive than it is if you had fresh tyres on, so you might have to lift for a few corners and make a few corrections. Just drive smoothly and you will succeed.
Timed Lap Test (6:36)
Gold Medal Target Time: 1:50.000
You have done a few tests now round this circuit, so this should not be as daunting as first thought. Go as fast as you can and hit all apexes collecting all Chevrons. Make sure your are flat out in turns 2 and 3. Use the DRS on the the two straights. You will be surprised about how good you are!
Evaluation Test (8:35)
Gold Medal Target Time: 3:35.000
You're going to need another 2 perfect laps in order to get gold for this. Here are some pointers to factor in:
- Use 70% KERs off the start line. 15% coming out of the hairpin (Turn 6) and the other 15% after Turn 8 (just before the 2nd DRS Zone).
- Make sure you overtake Rossi in the 2nd DRS Zone.
Try to overtake Turkey before the end of the lap, if not, you must have passed him before the first DRS Zone on your second lap. - On your second Lap use 50% of KERs coming out of the Hairpin (Turn 6) and the other 50% coming out of Turn 8 (just before the 2nd DRS Zone).
- Make sure you overtake Prost during the first DRS Zone.
- Now with half a lap left in front of you, it's time to put in some good times. You can lose the Gold Medal through being held for too long by three cars, so hopefully you have cleared them in good time. Make sure you do not take them out, this will nullify your chances in getting the Gold Medal, or any medal for that matter.
This can be hard and will take a few retries this video shows gold for every test.
