How to unlock the This Time Next Year... achievement in F1 2013 - Definitive Guide

Bit of a grind needed as you can't get this on first season. When being offered a contract for season two pick a poor team like Marussia or Caterham. You must be offered the number 1 driver position.

Now in season 2 drive Austrailia and do your best to get pole position and win. This will keep you ahead of the team mate challenge all season as both these cars are poor so will not score points.

Now all you need to do is retire from every race until around Monza(this varies). You will recieve an email asking to end R&D testing due to poor performance. Click yes and pop.

Top tip is to just make sure your ahead of the team mate challenge. It's out of 5 and I was 3/5 ahead all season after Australia

Yeah but if you focus season 1 on winning championship and constructors the second season can easily be completed in under an hour if you follow the above.

I wasn't sure if I was going to win the Constructors in my first season (came down to the final race and even then I had to crash a couple people) so I had already selected to join Red Bull for the following season in case I needed to get the Constructors in season 2. This meant I couldn't just quit every race because I would lose my #1 driver status. So I qualified on pole at every track and also won 8 races and retired from 5 and easily kept my #1 status and still got the email to cancel development after Singapore, even though I was 2nd in the points. So you don't have a to fail constantly to get the email, as long as you're the #1 driver on the team. The failing does save time though if you aren't on a good team and your teammate doesn't consistently score points and get podiums.

Sounds about right, sucks you can't have 3 lap career races like in 2012 as this would be a breeze

This one can be done in any season after the first season. If you want it quickly, do it in the second season. But it's entirely up to you.

I think I messed this up.

Won both drivers and team championship in the first season, but along the way I rejected new contract offers because I obviously didn't want to join a crap team before I had the Constructors Championship wrapped up.

I figured that at the end of the season I'd be able to choose a team or something. No such luck. I had to stick with Mercedes as an Equal driver. No other offers to choose from.

To get this achievement, as stated before, it cannot be obtained in your first season. Obviously, playing on EASY really helps. So to get this:

First Part : Start your first season with a team of your choice. Mine was Williams. Play through your season until race 10. You will be offered a contract (if you've done well) with a low team as their #1 driver. If you do get this, accept it and next season, you'll start as the #1 driver for the team you accepted contracts with. To me, it was Caterham who offered to me.

NOTE!: keep in mind, I won ALL 19 races in season one and was only offered EQUAL status. Having equal status VOIDS the achievement. You MUST be #1.

The solution: In the very first race, Australia, qualify on Pole position (1st place) then, win the race. This will put you ahead of your team mate 4 to 1= 4/5 and he will have 1/5. You can check this by reading your emails you receive after every race. After the first race, you will get an email asking you to select a R&D Path. The choices are: Agressive, Neutral, Defensive. This choice DOES NOT matter. The main goal is staying #1 driver, so the cheap way is, TURN your damage to FULL on your assist options. Qualify AHEAD of your team mate, the position does not matter so long as you are ahead of him in qualification, then, come race day take him out and make sure he does not finish. To do this, drive infront of him, when the corner comes close, slam the brakes, this will make him crash the back of your car, which is extremely strong, making him retire from the race. Then crash out.

After race 10 or 11, you will get an e-mail asking you to end your R&D Path due to poor performance. Answer this email with a yes, the ACHIEVEMENT POPS. Remember to check your emails as you can get this emails in different races. It's been reported most players get it at Singapore (race 13) but I got it at SPA (race 10).

IMPORTANT: Turning off your Auto-save can REALLY help in case you mess up this process. Manually save after race one, then, you can Dashboard if you make any mistakes.

If you pick a team which never gets to the podium and (almost) never scores points. All you have to do the first race is win. Your teammate will never get more podiums or points than you, all you have to do then is outqualify him for the team mate to go your way. You will have more podiums, more points, and outqualify him more often than the other way around 3/5 will keep you nr. 1 driver. So you dont have to bother in crashing him out of the race.

Just to note, if you are as useless as me at this game and cannot get a podium in the first race, at least score some points. If you are Maurissa or Caterham your team mate will not score for the rest of the races after this.

You can then out qualify your team mate in the next 6 races and still be 3/5 by the time you get to Monza or Singapore. Quit out of each race after this and check that you are still 3/5 in front. He will be 1/5 for better finishes.

I would like to share my expierience - all solutions are good, but they not describe what to do if you make mistake like i did.

At the end of first season, i decided to stay in my team (Mercedes AMG) - that was terrible mistake, becouse i was equal driver with Nico Rosberg. First thing is that - if you are equal driver, you don't decide about R&D. Second thing - he is damn good, and almost every race he was on podium.

Becouse i didn't set autosave OFF - i wasn't able to go back. So i decided to win first two races. When i got 50 points, I was almost sure i will end season in first 10. So i abandon all races to middle of season (about 12 or 13 race). Then i got contract offers from two weak teams (Marussia and Catherham) as the 1st driver. So i accepted one of them, and skip all races to end of season. Then in 3rd season i just won 1st race (Australia) and do as other solution describes.

It is a long journey in earning this trophy. First of all, in order to set a team's R&D you will have to be the team's 'Number 1 Driver' and you can check whether you are or not via 'Main Hub' on the Main Menu of Career Mode. There are 3 important dates throughout a single year in Career Mode which you must be aware of; these are: China, Canada and Singapore. After racing China and Canada, providing you are the Number 1 Driver, you are allowed to set the team's path for R&D. This option appears in your emails, so look out for it. Then after Singapore, you get the option to end the R&D, do so and the trophy will pop. However it is vital that you are the team's Number 1 Driver from the start of the season all the way to Singapore, if you lose the status, then you will be forced into doing another season of your career.

How to become a Number 1 Driver and Keeping it.
The reality is, that the earliest opportunity to become a Number 1 driver of a team is at the start of the second season in your career. Whatever team you start your career with you will always be a Number 2. From this point onwards there are two ways of becoming a Number 1 driver. Either outperform your teammate in every discipline and come the 2nd season you will be offered a new contract and along with it the Number 1 status. However the second and preferred option is to switch teams for your second year. In the first half of your debut season, make sure you outperform your team mate. Then after the Singapore GP (Race 13) you will be offered a contract by both Caterham and Marussia. If you read them carefully one of them will be guaranteeing that you will be their Number 1 driver for next year. Accept the contract which says you will be their main guy and now that you have that under your cap you can pretty much retire from every race till the end - providing you have achieved everything that you have set out to do in your 1st year.

Now for your second year in either the Caterham or the Marussia, all you have to do is race Melbourne (under Amateur Difficulty), finish on the podium and set the Fastest Lap. This will put you three up in the 'Team Mate Challenge'. The Team Mate Challenge is 5 different disciplines which are:

Out-raced
Podiums
Out-qualified
Fastest Laps
Championship Points

If you are winning at least 3 of them, then you will be always the Number 1 Driver of a team. Considering there is not a snowball's chance in Hades' that your teammate will go on to win any races or to even score points due to the inferiority of the Caterham and Marussia, you now therefore, have the liberty to theoretically retire from every qualifying session and race till Singapore, which is when you finally get the opportunity to end this year's car R&D. However do keep a watchful eye on the 'Team Mate Challenge', just in case he does happen to score some points, although it is highly unlikely that he will. Also, keep checking the Teammate Challenge emails to see if he has leveled things up in the disciplines. If he does, simply race another race and win it before Singapore approaches. Lastly, you start getting these emails updating you about the Team Mate Challenge after the Chinese GP (Race 3).

To be given the chance to end R & D early you will need to be number one driver which means you will not get this untill season number 2, If you have out performed your team mate during season 1 you will be given the number 1 driver title, this will be in season 2 and can be as quick as you like.

You should only need you to win 1 race, you want to qualify as well as you can and go for the win in the first race of the season, at least finish in the top three. This way you team mate will never catch you in the best of 5 team mate challenge. From race 2, you can just keep retiring at the start if you wish and then as the number 1 Driver you will make all the decisions on R & D Testing, you should get 2 emails about the direction to take and then an email around Singapore to end R & D or carry on, End it for the achievement.
