How to unlock the FFX: Perseverance achievement in FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster - Definitive Guide

In order to unlock the Penance fight, you will need to beat all the Dark Aeons. Only attempt these after you have gotten the airship.

Dark Aeon Locations:
Dark Valefor: Located at the entrance back into Besaid Village.
Dark Ifrit: At the entrance back into Home, the Al Bhed headquarters in the desert. Talk to the man there after Home is destroyed and agree to look for their daughter.
Dark Ixion: In the northern part of the Thunder Plains. Talk to the soldier there. After you beat him for the first time, you will need to fight Dark Ixion a second time in order for them to be considered defeated. The second time around, he spawns randomly around the northern part of the Thunder Plains after lightning strikes. Run into him again in order to engage the fight.
Dark Shiva: Found at the entrance back into Macalania Temple. You don't need to beat the soldiers that come running after the fight for it to count.
Dark Bahamut: At the location where you fought Lady Yunalesca in the Zanarkand Dome.
Dark Yojimbo: At the back of the Stolen Fayth Cavern. You will need to turn around and head back towards the save sphere in order for him to spawn. This one is a doozy because you need to beat him five times in a row for him to be considered fully defeated (more on that further down).
Dark Anima: Located at the entrance to Mount Gagazet. In order for her to spawn, you need to complete the blitzball target trial minigame in the Gagazet Cave with Wakka again.
Dark Magus Sisters: Teleport to the Djose Highroad location. Turn around immediately and walk over the rubble to go back to Mushroom High Road. Backtrack along here until you run into two NPCs wearing summoner's clothes. Run into them to trigger the fight.

There are two ways to go for this achievement: maxing out everyone's stats on the sphere grid (which include grinding for luck and fortune spheres as well as all the other ones), or by using zanmato to destroy all of the Dark Aeons and Penance, which is how I did it.

Zanmato is Yojimbo's rarest attack. It is also the strongest in the game. It automatically one-shots every enemy you are facing, including superbosses. As you can imagine, it is very hard to make Yojimbo do this attack. In order to have the highest probability of triggering a zanmato:

Select Option 3 when first recruiting Yojimbo. He is found at the back of the Stolen Fayth Cavern. When he asks you what your goals are, pick the one that says something along the lines of "To defeat the strongest foes". If you select any of the other ones his likelihood of performing Zanmato drastically decreases. If you have already recruited Yojimbo and did NOT select option 3, I recommend restarting the game if you want to use the Zanmato method.

Make sure Yojimbo's overdrive bar is full. This makes a huge difference when the game is calculating whether or not zanmato should trigger.

Pay him well when you summon him. Specifically, Yojimbo's motivation to trigger zanmato increases every time you double the amount of gil paid:

Gil Motivation
2 4
4 8
8 12
16 16
32 20
64 24
... ...
1,048,576 80

So, make sure you're only paying him in powers of 2 in order to save gil.

Make sure you maximize the compatibility between Yuna and Yojimbo. The more compatible you are, the higher chance for zanmato. When Yojimbo is first recruited, his compatibility starts at 128, and maxes at 255.

User Li'l Papaia on Steam has worked up a fantastic calculator for how likely it is to zanmato any enemy, and much of the following compatibility information comes from that: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=69949...

Compatibility is increased or decreased according to what attack Yojimbo does:

Attack/Action Compatibility
Zanmato ------------------------------------------ +4
Wakizashi (All Enemies) --------------------- +3
Wakizashi (One Enemy) ---------------------- +1
Kozuka --------------------------------------------- +0
Daigoro -------------------------------------------- -1

Dismiss Yojimbo right after summoning - -3
Yojimbo gets killed ------------------------------ -10
Pay Yojimbo 0 Gil -------------------------------- -20

There is no in-game tracker for compatibility, so you'll need to keep track of it yourself. I grinded my compatibility on random encounters. Compatibility is NOT affected by paying him low gil (as long as it's at least one), but your probability of doing a better attack lessens. The ratio of amount paid to amount of gil you have also does not factor into it (as long as you picked option 3 when you recruited him).

Every enemy also has an in-game Zanmato Resistance Level, which dictates how easy it is to zanmato them. All Dark Aeons and Penance have the highest resistance levels in the game. There is also a random element to every payment: you could pay Yojimbo 1 million gil and there is still a chance that he doesn't do zanmato.

Once you have maxed Yojimbo's compatibility, almost all of the rest should be a breeze. I paid Yojimbo 262,145 (2^19) for almost every Dark Aeon fight and he zanmato'd some of them first try. You could probably pay vastly lower and still get a zanmato with full overdrive and max compatibility. If he doesnt do it first try, reload your game and try again. You should do swimmingly until you face Dark Yojimbo. cry

Dark Yojimbo is the in-game safeguard to try and make sure players don't use the above strategy to cheese every boss in the game. You must kill him five times in a row (without saving!) in order for him to be considered "defeated". If you lose once and try to reload your save, you must start back at the first battle. The probability of performing Zanmato five times in a row is low and discouraging ... but not impossible!

In order to have Yojimbo's Overdrive bar full for every Dark Yojimbo encounter, you must need: 1) Yojimbo with full overdrive. 2) Yuna with full overdrive, and 3) 3 other characters with full overdrives and the "Entrust" ability to donate their overdrives to Yuna. All of these characters, as well as Yuna, should also have Initiative First Strike on their weapons so Yuna can summon Yojimbo before Dark Yojimbo has a chance to kill everyone. The first Dark Yojimbo battle is always an ambush, but Initiative First Strike negates that.

The "Entrust" method is the most time-efficient way of doing Dark Yojimbo runs. If you really don't feel like getting three characters this ability, you can set Yuna's mode to Ally (overdrive charges when it's her turn). Run around until you trigger a fight with a Magic Pot. Since these enemies don't attack, you can just skip turns (Y button) until her bar is full.

I found that the RNG for trying to zanmato Dark Yojimbo was a little odd for the first few attempts. If you're at max compatibility and for whatever reason you seem like you're just not pulling off zanmatos, try winning at least one random encounter before each Dark Yojimbo battle. This seemed to reset my chance of actually triggering zanmato. After you beat Dark Yojimbo for the first time, the game will not spawn encounters for you until you leave the cave or fully defeat him. You can turn them back on by teleporting in and out of the side treasure rooms at the back of the cave.

I paid a little higher for Dark Yojimbo. At 524,289 gil and max compatibility, the chance of zanmato'ing Dark Yojimbo is around 90%, if he doesn't perform a free Wakizashi at first. The chance of this happening is about 25%... and if he does it, your Yojimbo will be killed immediately. roll

A side note: to trigger each Dark Yojimbo fight, you will need to backtrack through the Cavern of Stolen Fayth and find his summoner in different spots. The only missable location is his third one, which is located in a nook to the top right of the mini-map about halfway through the cave. If you skip this location and only fight him four times, it won't count.

Dark Yojimbo will take you a while, but persistence is key! Don't give up. After you defeat him Penance will be a breeze.

Again, big credit to Li'l Papaia on Steam for creating the original zanmato calculator.

Please comment with any questions. Thanks for reading!

PS. If you're having trouble getting gil to pay for Yojimbo's services, you can buy tetra armor from the pier merchant in Killika, customize it, and then sell it back to them. If you customize 99 of them with stamina tonics and sell them, you will make 2.5 million gil.

Wow. I spent a LOT of time maxing out stats and perfecting the sphere grid and creating all the recommended armors only to, quite accidentally, Zanmato Nemesis. This was well into the fight, after summoning a bunch of other Aeons to absorb massive hits for me. For Nemesis I summoned Yojimbo, paid him not that much, and he just did it on the very first try. I tried to do it on purpose for Penance: I paid him 5M right after summoning, and he got a second turn, so I followed it up with 3M gil and he Zanmato'd Penance without giving up a turn.

All that time on the sphere grid... wasted. angry But at least the final sequence of the game was a breeze for all my efforts. One-shotted everything.

@C3LLDW3LLER https://steamcommunity.com/linkfilter/?url=https://t.co/vVwf... This is a direct link to the zanmato calculator excel file download

As you raise Yojimbo's compatibility, his chances for doing a free Wakizashi at the beginning of the turn also go up, maxing at 24.9% according to the calculator. There isn't any way to counter this aside from doing a soft reset and reloading.

If it seems like he is doing free Wakizashis 100% of the time even after reloading, try winning one random encounter before fighting whatever aeon you're on. For me, this seemed to change Yojimbo's attacks in the Dark Aeon fight.

Hope this helps.

This game overstays it’s welcome a bit. I haven’t used Yojimbo much so this is going to be annoying.

Yes, doing it without saving is going to be a joke even though I’m fully powered

You mean the 5 consecutive Dark Yojimbo fight? From what I read, no you cannot save, BUT you can return to the save sphere and touch it to restore your health & aeon health freely.

Just defeated Penance using Yojimbo. Jesus I had to pay him 12.5 million gil to get him use Zanmato. That's 99.99% of my entire amount of gil.

@Da Mitch Man 90
If you are fully powered (all stats maxed out) then Dark Yojimo actually is a joke. If you keep Quick-Hitting Dark Yojimbo dealing 99999 damage per hit without missing, all you need to survive is to get Yuna to summon an Aeon to take the hit for you. At most 2 Aeons are needed per fight. After that, return to the save sphere and touch it to make all Aeons usable again.

If the game had not even allowed us to backtrack to the save sphere then it would have been a truly brutal challenge, but being able to backtrack and restore health means not saving is not an issue at all.

After having some trouble taking down Yojimbo, I wanted to share my experience with how I managed to take him down in the hopes that it might help some people. I'll be throwing a TL;DR version down the bottom so you don't need to read my ramblings

I managed to kill him 5 times without using Zanmato or any of my characters/aeons overdrives.

I didn't go crazy with boosting for Luck, I only had four nodes that were activated by Tidus, Yuna and Auron
I also didn't have Wakka's Celestial weapon powered up, so I didn't use his overdrive to deal massive damage. I did, however, have an additional 20 or so "+4 accuracy".
I'll post my stats down below for comparison

The main characters I had for these fights were Tidus, Yuna and Auron, and would sometimes swap in Rikku for an additional turn. Every character had their Celestial weapon equipped and fully powered up

The first fight with Yojimbo is a little different as he ambushes you. I believe this is the hardest fight, and as such it may be easy to Zanmato the 1st one.

This is how I defeated him the first time:
Start the fight with Tidus, Auron and Rikku. As Auron has his Celestial weapon, he goes before Yojimbo, swap him out for Yuna, and summon your first aeon available Valefor. Your aeons are going to be used as cannon fodder and are just taking the brunt of Yojimbo's attacks

Once your aeon is summoned, just do a normal attack on Yojimbo. No Overdrives or special attacks. More then likely, the Aeon will miss the attack, and will be defeated shortly after

Now the fun part. First move, cast Hastega. If the next character is Rikku, swap her out and throw in Auron and cast haste on himself. if not cast Aim. The idea is you want to get your characters stacked up with 5 lots of Aim to increase accuracy. Once they have had Aim casted on themselves 5 times, you want to use the skill "Quick Hit". Unfortunately, Yojimbo's evasion is still quite high, so I failed to hit him about 50% of the time

Keep an eye out on the turn bar. you want to summon another aeon just before Yojimbo's next attack. The way I did this is on Yuna's last turn, if there was another character after her, I would swap Yuna for Rikku, and would either stack her up with Aim, or Quick Hit if she was already stacked up. On the very last turn before Yojimbo's next attack swap Yuna back in and summon your next available aeon.

Once again, do a normal attack with the aeon, the aeon will die, and get back to doing Aim/Quick Hit until Yojimbo is downed.

If one of your characters get downed, they lose their Aim stack, so you will need to use Aim again. However I didn't have any of my characters get attacked using the above method, so you don't need to worry about that.
My last aeon in the first battle to get downed was Anima.

You won't need to worry about Yojimbo's Overdrive bar if you summon an aeon before each of his turns, as he only uses Zanmato on his turn, and doesn't do it as soon as it is filled.

The rest of the battles are much the same, but he doesn't ambush you are the start.
Start the battle with Tidus, Yuna and Auron. Cast Hastega, Stack Aim 5 times and go to work on him with Quick Hit. Summon aeons just before all of his attacks
With the last 4 battles, my last downed aeon was Shiva.

Here are my stats for the people I used in battle:
Tidus:
HP - 9999
MP - 999
Strength - 215
Agility - 184
Defense - 164
Luck - 34
Magic - 167
Evasion - 190
Magic Defense - 255
Accuracy - 152

Yuna:
HP - 9999
MP - 999
Strength - 205
Agility - 184
Defense - 159
Luck - 33
Magic - 182
Evasion - 210
Magic Defense - 255
Accuracy - 145

Auron:
HP - 9999
MP - 999
Strength - 220
Agility - 179
Defense - 169
Luck - 33
Magic - 167
Evasion - 185
Magic Defense - 255
Accuracy - 145

Rikku:
HP - 9999
MP - 999
Strength - 210
Agility - 190
Defense - 162
Luck - 18
Magic - 172
Evasion - 185
Magic Defense - 255
Accuracy - 147

I made some Equipment that had Auto-Phoenix and Auto-Haste on Auron's armour, but I think it did bugger all with casting Hastega in the first turn and not actually having a character get attacked

So that's it! let me know if I have missed something or if you had any problems with how I have worded things

Here is the TL;DR version
Cast Hastega
Cast Aim on your characters 5 times
Use Quick Hit to attack
Summon an aeon just before Yojimbo's turn to take the damage

So frustrating. Yojimbo gets two turns almost every single time at the beginning of the first battle.
1. I go first with Auron's First Strike ability. Switch to Yuna and summon an Aeon.
2. Yojimbo kills it. My guys come back into the fight.
3. Before I can move he gets another turn and kills everyone.

Hey there. It's been a while since I've played. But on the first fight he ambushes you which probably is why he is attacking twice.

I suggest using zanmato for the first attack and using this solution for the rest

After having tried the yojimbo solution after the countless hours of grinding sphere grid levels I realized it was just a waste of time to do yojimbo as well. With the right gear set up and maxed out standard sphere grid for wakka, rikki, and tidus atleast you can easily take down all dark aeons & penance. Jegged has the best strategies to do this I will leave their website attached for you guys to check out.

Think I spent an extra 60 hours grinding levels for every character, not sure about any of you but I wasn’t about to spend another 60 just to hopefully zanmato a few boss battles.

I'll second that jegged web guide. It had tons of useful data. The biggest thing to me, other than the massive grinding to max out the sphere grid, was to grind a little bit of luck (114 minimum) for the 3 primary fighters for the harder dark aeon fights (Anima & Yojimbo). I guess you could always entrust Rikku for Ultra Nul to speed things up instead of cheer x5.

Never liked using the Zanmato strat with Yojimbo and went with the increase Luck stat. Farming HP wasn't down my alley either. To each, their own though and find what makes you happy or sane.

Anyway, Penance itself was just a rinse & repeat and not mess up.

I used UsedRobot's strategy and was so excited for it. There is a lot of prep work that needs to be done before you can fight the Dark Aeons.

The Dark Aeons appear after you enter the Macalania Temple and have the encounter with Seymour. Until you enter the temple, you can still backtrack all the way to Besaid without getting into a fight with the Dark Aeons. Also, you cannot start the Dark Aeon fights until after you get the airship. The story does not allow you to backtrack to where they are, and some of the later ones haven't been unlocked yet. Before going into the temple, take that time to get any item you missed, i.e. Yuna and Auron's crests, Auron's overdrive spheres, play some blitzball.

Weapons: Celestial Weapons are a requirement for the fight. You definitely need Auron's, fully powered up, since it gives him the First Strike ability.

Armor: Go to Kilika and purchase the Tetra Armor for each of your characters. Tetra Armor has 4 blank slots for you to fill. We will be using Rikku's customize ability for this. Each of my characters has the following skills, Auto-Phoenix, Auto-Haste, Ribbon, and Break HP Limit. Auto-Phoenix and Auto-Haste are needed. When you fight the Dark Aeons, each turn in each round needs to count. You do not want to waste a turn casting Haste or Life. Plus, Auto-Haste doubles the number of attacks per round, giving you an edge. Ribbon is a pain to farm, but needed for the Magus Sisters and Yojimbo. You get 99 Dark Matter from completing part of the Monster Quest. Use that for Ribbon and nothing else. I prefer Break HP Limit, but you can use another of your choice.

Max the Sphere Grid: Well, at least for 4 characters. I used Auron, Wakka, and Rikku as my main 3, with Yuna as a reserve. Each node of the Sphere Grid needs to be filled in. If in doubt, check to see if the Master Sphere is lit up for use. If it is, find out where the empty node is and fill it. Master Spheres are rare and should not be used to fill in an empty node. I preferred to max out Tidus first and use his grid as the template for the rest of the team. Once you fill in an empty node, it becomes that stat for the rest of the team. I fill in all the activated nodes first, then start at the bottom left of the sphere grid and start filling in the empty ones with the stats I need. Jegged has a great guide to help find the spheres you will need.
Start by farming against One-Eye. They are the easiest of the fiends to defeat. At roughly 190,000 HP, 2 Break Damage attacks will kill it. They drop weapons with Triple AP bonuses. Add the Overdrive to AP ability for a massive AP boost. One-Eye occasionally drops 2 Dark Matter per fight. At full strength, it took me about an hour to farm for 1 Ribbon. The Don Tonberry trick is pretty easy way to farm a lot of sphere levels quickly. Equip the weapons that you get from One-Eye, that each have Triple AP and Overdrive to AP. Set the overdrive to Comrade. With this mode, each time a character gets hit, the other 2 get AP for it. Don Tonberry's Karma attack can hit for a max of 99,999, depending on how many fiends the character has killed. Keep attacking until you beat him, then start filling out those nodes. If you run out of spheres to use, walk down Mi'ihen Highroad and get all the ones you need. I prefer to use the Extract ability to get exactly the sphere I need. The enemies are easier enough to beat here, so you can get your kill number up higher, resulting in more AP from Don Tonberry.

Fight the Aeons: After all that, we are finally ready to fight the Aeons. Use UsedRobot's guide to find them all and be aware of the ones you have to fight multiple times.
At the start of each fight, have your main 3 ready and Yuna in the first slot for the change-out. Start by having your characters cast Aim, for a total of 5 Aim cast. Then attack, with Auto-Haste and Aim, you should be able to hit 2-4 times that round. At the start of the next round, have the first character cast Aim, then attack the rest of the time. Pay attention to the Overdrive bar. If the last attack of the round will fill it, don't attack. Just guard until the next round, giving you a free round to attack without getting defeated. At the last turn of the round, change out for Yuna. Have her summon any aeon and just attack. Overdrives are not recommended for Dark Aeons. Some of the Overdrives actually heal the Dark Aeon. The only purpose of calling your Aeons is to take the full force of the Dark Aeon's overdrive. Once the attack ends, change out Yuna and repeat the strategy.

Notes about the Aeons and their locations:
Valefor- can be found at the gates to Besaid. Anything you need in Besaid is locked until you defeat her. At 800,000 HP, Valefor is the easiest of the Dark Aeons. Don't underestimate her. Her overdrive will kill you and it comes quickly.
Ixion- 1,200,000 HP x2. In the Thunder Plains. DO NOT talk to anyone if you do not want to fight Ixion.
Ifrit- 1,4000,000 HP. In the Bickanel Desert in the northern part. Just do not try to find the lost child until you are ready to fight. The Al Bhed lurking nearby are a clue to the location.
Magus Sister- Sandy- 2,500,000 HP. Mindy- 2,000,000 HP. Cindy- 3,000,000 HP. Complete the race to the end of the Mushroom Rock Road. This will separate them and you can fight them individually. They cannot do the Delta Attack, but will still mess your day up with a graviton attack. if you enter from Mushroom Rock Road or Mi'ihen Highroad, you will fight them. To get Auron's Celestial Weapon, enter from the Djose side. You can leap over the downed tower and get to Auron's weapon from that direction. Mushroom Rock Road is effectively locked until you defeat them.
Shiva- 1,100,000 HP. at the entrance to the Macalania Temple. If you go past Rin's at Lake Macalania, you are commmitting to the fight.
Bahamut- 4,000,000 HP. In Yunalesca's chamber. If you did not get Tidus' crest, it is locked until you defeat Dark Bahamut.
Anima- 8,000,000 HP. you need to repeat the cave minigame and unlock Anima. She will appear at the entrance to Mt. Gagazet. You can unlock her and walk right past her without starting the fight.
Yojimbo- 1,600,000 HP x5. in the Sunken Cave/Cavern of the Stolen Fayth. Possibly the hardest Dark Aeon to fight, since you need to beat him 5 times in a row to defeat him. Start the fight by going past the save sphere in the Chamber of the Fayth, then backtrack into the cave. You need to walk through the cave and engage Yojimbo to beat him. You cannot leave and cannot save the fight progress. Once you leave or turn off the game, the fight counter resets. Each time you beat Yojimbo, backtrack to the save sphere.
Any levels, items, or armor you get is saved, but you do not save the fight progress.
But, your HP, MP, and Aeons are fully restored. You do not fight any other enemies in the cave. Yojimbo rarely drops armor with Break HP limit or Ribbon. If you manage to get one with 4 slots, use it. Yojimbo is used as a farming area for Dark Matter. It is not the most efficient use of your time to do that. One-Eye is more efficient and less stressful.

It takes a while, so good luck with this.
