How to unlock the Drift Lap achievement in Forza Motorsport 3 - Definitive Guide
What to do:
Go to the main menu and select FREE PLAY, HOT LAP
Car: Mitsubishi, HKS Time Attack Evolution
Assists & Difficulty: Turn all OFF. Shifting Manual.
Track: Fujimi Kaido "Full Circuit".
Tips:
-First things first. Right after you start the race, press left on the Directional to bring up the DRIFT POINT box in the upper right.
-VERY IMPORTANT! The Rewind feature is your friend! Don't forget about it! Use it and abuse it!
-Manual Drive, keep it in SECOND GEAR. As you go into the turn, lift your finger from the right trigger, hit A to start drifting and gently tap the right trigger to keep the drift going. With practice you will get a feel for it. You don't need to be going all that fast to pull off a decent drift.
-Shoot for 1000 points each turn to practice. When I finally started to get the hang of it I was getting anywhere between 1500 to 3000 points per turn. Sometimes more.
-Squeeze the max amount of points you possible can out of each turn. If you feel you could have done better or you hit the side, rewind and retry till you get it right.
Here are the number of drift points I had at the start of each of the stone tunnels. I feel this is good reference for people on about how many drift points you should have. Restart if you need to.
This is for Fujimi Kaido "Full Circuit" NOT "Full Circuit Reverse"!
First tunnel: This is just after first turn in race.
Second tunnel: 26,197
Third and fourth tunnel (they are right after eachother): 72,894
Fifth tunnel (last): 100,019
Finished with 110,142
Good luck!
This is a guide I wrote and posted on xbox360achievements.org back in November 2009. I originally wrote it after purchasing several suggested tuning setup's from the Storefront and having no luck at all. This is the major difference between this guide and others. It requires 0 credits and is done in FREE PLAY! No need to purchase cars, upgrades or tuning setups. It also includes the drift score I had at certain points on this track just for reference.
This guide has helped many people and you are welcome to visit the original post to view the success stories before you start to invest the time.

This is the best solution because it doesn't require any tuning and gives reference points. Thanks!

This achievement is pretty difficult, and will likely take a few attempts.
Select the Bugatti Veyron (or experiment and find another car that suits you). Turn off all the assists, and select the full course of Fujimi Kaido. Let it load, and tap the Left Button on the D-Pad.
Take it easy in the Veyron. It will reach very high speeds very easily. I found it worked best when you kept it below 70MPH, as it is easier to handle that way. Make sure to use the Rewind feature if you feel you could have taken a corner better too - there's no punishment for it, and doing it could be the difference between getting your Gamerscore and failing. I tried to get at least 500 on smaller corners, and on the longer / sharper corners I went for at least 1,000.
There are some sweeping corners on the downhill area of the course. As fun as it may be, resist the urge to drive at high speed. Take it slow, and hold your drifts as long as possible. I was able to get my drift from part of the downhill section to earn 10,000 points, so trying to do that may help.
The best way to make the rear end of the car slide out is by tapping the A Button (Handbrake). Don't hold it too long, as you're only aiming for it to lose traction, and not to spin out altogether.
Remember, don't decide to stop during a drift! This will negate ALL the points in that current drift. If you're going to hit a wall, rewind. Try and find the line that works best for you.
I know I probably made this sound pretty difficult. If you keep a cool head though, you could possibly do it in one attempt.

The key to drifing is a really powerful car, best to use manual gears, and stick it in a high gear, either 4th or 5th. Why? This enables you to use all the low down torque in the gear, torque is what spins the wheels, not power!
My weapon of Choice is a 240z, Fully tuned with the RB26 Skyline Núr engine conversion, making this S Class, i havnt tuned the suspension (So running stock fully tune), and its by far the best drift car yet!
They key to this acheivment is Fujumi Kaido, Why?, Forza only recognises drifting at Corner Entrances, During the corner and Corner exit, it doesnt recognise "Sway Drifting" (Drifting on straitaways) and no points awarded.
Fujimi Kaido is full of corners you can chain together, you want to aim to atleast get 1500 Points per corner, which is easily pulled off.
It also is consists on a Uphill Section and downhill section, it doesnt really matter which way to do it, but i prefer going Clockwise, Why? the old part of Fujimi has some long, open downhill swept roads which can be taken advantage of the downhill force!
this really isnt a hard one, Tune up a 240z, take it for a spin!

I'm terrible at drifting, so the above solutions were pretty helpful for me. I got it on Fujimi Kaido with a fully suped-up Bugatti Veyron and just auto-breaking and TCS turned off. The best piece of advice I can give (other than rewind until you make every corner count) is if you don't succeed on the first lap, don't start over; keep the same session going. The longer you're driving/drifting, the more you wear down your tires. Less traction makes it easier to initiate your slide, and as long as it's timed right, you won't have any problems pulling out of it, even with your tires shot. It took me four laps, but my score went up every time until...bleep bloop.

Just out of interest - how did you soup up your Bugatti - is there a fitout online that can help with this?

I just dumped the max amount of cash into it...which makes it an interesting R2 car–insanely fast, but far less maneuverable than most R2s. The Veyron is great for drifting for exactly this reason, especially if you up the horse power. I don't have any significant tuning in it; when not drifting, I have the grip tweaked up a little.

This achievement was the last I had to get for Forza3. As I am a moderate drifter it took me quite a while. The key to obtaining this achievement are manual gears, the usage of the accelerator of the HKS Time Attack Evolution, and the track Fumijo Kaido.
First of all in Free Run turn off all assists. Right after the start of the race press left to see your driftpoints. As soon as you start driving slam the car into second gear. Don't worry about shifting gears anymore, because you won't for the remainder of the race.
When nearing a corner make sure you're on the outside of the track. Tap B (handbrake) to start drifting and immediately press down A (Throttle) and keep pressing it down to maintain a decent drift and not spin out. As soon as you release the throttle while still in a corner you'll either spin out or crash on the outside of that corner.
In the 'easy' corners you should be able to obtain 300-500, in the hairpin corners 800-1100, and later on in the sweeping corners 1200-1500. As mentioned many, many times before, the playback feature is your biggest friend. Do not try to drift on the straits as Forza only awards drift points when in corners.
When you reach the second tunnel you should be at about 25,500 driftpoints, at the third/fourth tunnel at about 70,000. After the fourth tunnel it seems you are left with only have a small segment of the track. No worries, from now on the majority of corners are sweeping corners. Ideal for stringing driftpoints together.
If all goes well, you'll end up with just above 100,000 driftpoints. Good luck.

At first, I could not manage to obtain this achievement. I tried countless times over and over again, and I never managed to do it. Finally, I found a car that I was very comfortable in and learned to master that cars movements as I slid around the track. So here is what I did.
First off, my car was the fully upgraded Saleen S5S. It is a DLC car but if you love the game and want a few more fast cars, buy this car pack. The Saleen has become my favorite car and in my opinion, a great car to use for this achievement. Now, I chose to do it on Hot Lap/Fujimi Kaido full circuit-normal (not reversed). Once I was prompted to put what assists I would like to have on, I chose to turn them all off except for the line assist. With all of these turned off, your car will indeed slide more so than it did before (assuming you had the assists on). For the transmission I did manual. With this, it allowed me to stay in second gear throughout the whole race and it made sliding a little easier.
I do recommend that you stay on second gear and try not to shift higher. You really shouldn't need to. I aimed for 800-1000 points per turn and tried to chain as many turns as I could together, if possible. With this happening, at first I didn't think I was going to make it. I was entering the last tunnel with around 80,000 points. I forgot how close the finish line was after that so I was just hoping for the best. The last string of turns you will encounter are very good for chaining your drifts and can easily get you enough to reach 100,000 points by the last turn. You have about two miles after the last tunnel (will be the tunnel that comes off a steep hill going down the mountain). After rounding the last turn I had already reached above 100k and the achievement popped.
The last bit of advice I could possibly give is this: Don't be afraid to rewind if you don't get enough points to satisfy you.

ok the two other guides are helpfull but i couldnt do it with theres so i got a nissan datsun 510 and fully modded it out the go to the full course of fujimi kaido and turned off all assissts. then at every corner you have to get at least 1,000 points if you dont then rewind and try again.
also dont try and go over second gear as you will be going too fast and will slide into the wall.
the best way to drift for people that are unsure is to go to outside of the corner and as you turn in at second gear tap the handbrake turn into the slide and accelerate fully until you come out of the slide.
this may take a couple of laps but keep trying and you should do it eventually.

The best thing to do this is use the Bugatti Veyron i dont get 50k points with other cars but with this car at the first try i got easy over 100k ^^ so use this car it is for the not so god players like me :)
As a terrible drifter who drives an automatic, I found this easiest with the Mitsubishi HKS Time Attack Revolution on Nurburgring Nordschleife. It's an easy to handle car, and Nurburgring's corners are more numerous and less sharp than Fujimi Kaido, so if you're doing something totally out of your comfort zone for this like I was, this is just about possible.
This is one of the most unrewarding achievements that I've earned to date. It's not particularly difficult once you get a feel for drifting, but until you get a grasp of how to milk the most points out of the turns it can be challenging. NIZZU's strategy was the one that worked for me, but I thought I would give a few tips as follow up.
1. The rewind button is your best friend and your worst enemy. I had trouble letting go, I thought that I could have always done better. If its a firm score for a corner, just let it go and move on. Don't try to string the whole track together into one giant drift. (This is what I did and it took me about 3 hours to get this.)
2. Go once or twice around the track as practice before trying for the achievement. It puts wear on your tires and gives you a feel of how to maximize points.
When I was finished with my lap I had about 140,000 points and I could have saved myself a lot of trouble and time if I didn't try to be a perfectionist.

After trying the Time Attack Evo, Veyron, and others to no avail, I unlocked this the first time I tried an up-engined version of the car I used for most C-class races in career mode.
Acura Integra Type-R
RWD Drivetrain Conversion
Engine Swap for I4 - Honda S2000 w/Turbocharger
All Engine and Power upgrades
All Platform and Handling upgrades except reinforcement/roll cage
Camber 4 degrees negative front and rear, 2 degrees toe-out in front and toe-in on the back. Lowest ride height, a few clicks of extra spring stiffness in front.
I found this much easier to control in sustained drifts than the other suggested cars I tried.
Of course, this was on Fujimi Kaido, full circuit, all assists off and manual sticking to 2nd gear. I only settled for 1,000 plus on each turn, and was only satisfied with 1,500 or more on the wide, sweeping ones.

I'm a terrible drifter...just because i never drifted that much in Forza so i almost feared this achievement! Instead thanks to the wise words of Nizzu (the first guide i read) i was able to pull this one out, i would just like to add a little trick use the Mitsubishi HKS Time Attack Evolution FULLY UPGRADED R3 class..i made 102,000+ points at the end and was able to do that once i upgraded the car to R3 class...i really don't advise you to buy other setups DLC cars etc...it just can be done with what NIZZU said i can tell you!! Hope it helps
Car: Bugatti Veyron
Track: Fujimi Kaido: Full circuit
Assists: All OFF
Shifting manual. (NEVER go ABOVE first gear)
Now, when i got to a corner, i would down shift into reverse by pressing X. This made the Bugatti start drifting. During the drift i would then go back up to first gear by pressing B. I would then accelerate, this would make the drift continue round the whole corner.
When you go back up to first gear depends on how fast you're going, when you start the drift and how tight the corner is.
I can guarantee that this works because if you read NIZZU's guide, he has written how many points he had at each tunnel. At each tunnel i had about 10,000 less than that and still managed to finish the lap with just over 100,000 points.
Hope this helps.

I am very poor at drift style racing so this was always going to be a tough one for me, however, after trying out several of the above suggestions there was one suggestion that not only worked for me but with a little tweaking, made the challenge a lot easier.
First: Free play, Hot lap.
Second: Track: Fujimi Kaido: Full circuit. REVERSE. ( I will explain why later)
Third: Car: Bugatti Veyron
Fourth: Settings: all assists off and manual gears. Put the car into second gear as soon as you start and stay in it. ( you might benifit from dropping into first gear on some of the downhill corners just to keep your speed down)
Obviously the key to this challenge is getting the maximun ammount of wheel spin possible to score the most points. Finally: The tyres are automatically set at the optimum preasure to give a car the best ammount of grip possible, so, in TUNE SETUP change the tyre preassure the the maximum (55psi), this will reduce grip, giving you just that bit more wheel spin and increasing the drift points that you get. Its not a "drastic" difference but every little helps if you are having problems, and lets face it, just like me, you wouldnt be reading this if you are not having problems :-)
The reason for going with the reverse route on the circuit is this, the Veron is a heavy car, going uphill in a heavy car with lots of power increases the chance of wheelspin and there are more uphill corners on the reverse route.
Touch the handbreak ( the A button) going into a corner then fearher the gas pedal acording to the sharpness of the corner to get the desired wheelspin.
If you dont get it on the first lap dont reset, go for it on the second lap, by then the tyres will be worn a little giving you less grip, and that helps even more.
Hope this was some help. :-)

I got it pretty easy with a fully upgraded and tuned Fiat 500 Abarth on Fujimi Kaido: Full circuit. The only Thing special is i used an cheap Autofire Controller primary to get rid of the RT-Tapping. I have put the Tunesetup for it online, one is for use with an Autofire Controller the other is a optimized Version for normal Controller.
However i can only recommend to use an Autofire Controller with the Fiat 500 Abarth because i noticed this not only saves you form tapping RT what was the primary Reason i used it, it also perfect stabilize the Drifts it also autoregulate the Traction for this Car to a Level much superior as you would have enabled the Tractioncontrol itself, dunno why but it was just perfect.
I got 105k on the first try (but also needed some Time to test different Tunings first but only 1-2 Corners per test) and the longest downhill Drift was worth of 15k another one over 11k and 7k, with this Setup its really easy to get 200k or more with almost no skill.
If you have an Autofirecontroller use it with a such Config or take my Tunesetup, my Controller had three different Rates and i put it on the fastest and it was ok. However no guarantee that this is good for all Cars and also its only good for drifting nothing else because it slows you down which is another nice Effect for Drifting with Autogear enabled but logicaly very bad elsewhere...
Also i choiced the Fiat 500 Abarth primary because it is a small Car with enough Power which is better for Fujimi Kaido because of the small Streets.

For everyone who, like me, hired a driver for basically every race and did something ludicrously cheap for all the level achievements, and who therefore is approaching this achievement with the mentality that you WILL NEVER get this achievement, take it from someone who's terrible at every racing game that isn't Mario Kart:
You will get it, and it will not take as long as you think it will.
A few pointers.
1. "Hitting and holding A" is markedly different from "tapping A once very, very lightly." Some turns will require a held A, others a tapped A. You'll figure it out.
2. Each turn will be one of three types of turns: what I called in my head a "sharp" turn, a "long" turn, or a "square" turn. Sharp turns you go wide, hold A, and accelerate as quickly as you can to escape. Long turns you again go wide, but you tap A once, and then accelerate a bit at a time until you know exactly what to do. Square turns are just what they sound like: two basically 90 degree turns back to back. Theoretically I think you can do these a couple ways, but I took the first one sharp, tapped A, and then accelerated hard.
3. You may keep getting this problem where your car just keeps drifting, on and on and on, and then you run straight into a wall. This probably means that either 1) you held A too long or 2) you accelerated too hard. This was my biggest problem. Simply don't do whichever of the two things you did that was wrong. Another solution would be to [reference number 5].
4. If, as opposed to 3., you aren't hitting the inside wall, you're hitting the outside one, a couple tips. First, take the turn wider. Second, hold A a little more. Basically, you were going too fast and not turning enough, so braking will turn you more. Third, accelerate more. Once you lose traction, you have to accelerate to get out of the drift.
5. A neat way to pull out of a drift that is going to hit the wall is to drift the other way. This means, if what you've done is "tap A, accelerate hard, OMG I'M GONNA BARELY BUMP THE WALL AND IT'S STILL GONNA TAKE ALL MY POINTS," then what you should follow with is "A again, accelerate, turn the opposite way."
5.A. Running into the wall head-on will lose you points. Hitting the wall relatively hard with your side or rear will lose you points. Love-tapping, gently carressing, and otherwise showing affection with your car will not lose you points. This sounds crazy, and maybe it is a little (I'm writing this because I can't sleep), but you'll figure it out. I got it on my sixth try.
7. There is a fine line to be drawn between restarting the race and simply continuing. My second lap was always better than my first, because the tires get beautifully worn or whatever. However, by the fifth lap, you could feel the car simply losing traction as opposed to drifting. I don't know how else to describe it.
8. As previously stated, rewind is your best friend. "Better than your teddy bear" best. I used it for the obvious "Oh, messed that up," but also for "Huh, I have no idea what this turn actually looks like." So I would try it, obviously fail, rewind, and then do it right, knowing exactly where the wall would be and the available room for error and stuff.
8. I used the Mitsubishi whatever it is (the one farthest to the right) and Fujimi Kaido. Follow the instructions in earlier guides, like turning all controls off and gear to manual and stuff. I did one lap on a Sunday night, got 8k. I did five on Tuesday, getting 10k, 20k, 40k, 60k, and 60k. Tried again on Wednesday and everything clicked. 90k on my first lap, 107k on my second. When I scored, it was usually 600-1000 points in the first half, and like 1500-2000 for the last 30%. Those turns at the end get really easy to chain. Anyway, a lot of it is just getting a feel for it.

You got this!
I know that there are many solutions for this achievement but I feel like the following is the very best way to unlock the achievement:
Setup:
-Main Menu
-Free Play>>Hot Lap
-Bugatti Veyron
-Assists & Difficulty: Turn off everything EXCEPT for Suggested Line and change Shifting to Manual
-Fujimi Kaido>>Full Circuit Reverse
As soon as the race starts, press (D-pad left) so the Drift Point box in the upper right corner pops up. Make sure that you stay in first gear for the entire race. I changed my controls to Setup 8 or 9 (sorry I can't remember), my accelerate/gas button was and my handbrake was . Now as you're driving, you'll want to start drifting on the turns when the suggested line turns red. Try to stay in the drift as long as possible. If you ever mess up or if you think that you can drift better in a certain section then you can just press to Rewind. One of my best suggestions is to try to string together your drifts into a combo to increase your points, especially in the loop sections. I'm not going to say that the achievement will unlock on your first attempt because it takes practice. Eventually you will get the hang of things though. In my honest opponent, this is a difficult achievement.
Notes:
I recommend using the Bugatti Veyron over the Mitsubishi HKS Time Attack Evolution because I feel that the Bugatti is alot easier to control. I found the Mitsubishi to be extremely difficult to control. Almost everytime I tried to drift, I would spin out of control because the car slides too much with the assists turned off. Also, the Bugatti is a much faster car, so I felt that I was drifting better on the Full Circuit Reverse track because it's more uphill in some areas compared to the regular Full Circuit track that has more downhill sections.

Hey, i just want to add what or which car helped me to get this achievement..
I tried it with all these great guides but i can't managed it very well..
I couldn't even initiate a drift with the HKS Time Atack or the Bugatti Veyron let alone to control the drift, even if i adjusted the differencial to 100% torque-power to the rear-wheels..
I used the Subaru 22b
My favorite thing on this car and setup is that you don't need to use the e-brake, just play with the throttle. I used the Sticklayout: Left stick steering, right stick throttle and brake, i don't know how it is to control the acceleration with the right trigger. Maybe you're struggling with that if you normally use the standart controller layout..
Upgrades:
First buy the engine swap: F4T - Subaru 2.5
Then buy the drivetrain swap: RWD drivetrain
Then get all other engine and power upgrades and all platform and handling upgrades except the rollcage.
For the tires just buy the most widthest? only for the front! (265/35R17)
And for the aero and appearance i only bought the FM3 race front bumper (adjustable)
Don't get a rear wing.. let it on stock..
I also bought a rear bumper, side skirts and a lighter hood, but i think this ones are just design and minimal for speed..
For the Tuning:
If u need you can go and change your "units"..->My profile->HUD->units and set it on default..
Tire Pressure: Front: Stock: (2.1 bar plus 2 clicks) / Rear: Maximum for example 3.8 bar
Gear: Stock
Camber: Front: -2.0 / Rear: -0.5
Toe: Front: +0.5 / Rear: -0.5
Angle: Stock, (5.0)
Anti-Roll-Bars: Stock: Front 28.70 / 23:58
Springs: Stock: Front 104.8 / Rear 96.1
Ride heigth: Stock: Front: 11.2 / Rear: 11.2 or lowest..
Rebound stiffnes: Stock: Front 9.3 / Rear: 8.4
Bump stiffness: Stock: Front: 6.4 / Rear: 6.0
Aero: Front: 27 kg
Braking force balance: Stock: 50%
Braking force pressure: 160 % (i like it, maybe you don't)
Differential acceleration 75% / deceleration 75%
This is my standard drift-setup which i use for almost every RWD-Car, tested and adjusted a little, so it might not be perfect and you need to adjust a little bit more, but in general i think its a good setup (for me at least)
Important is that you set the damage, fuel and tire wear to cosmetic because of the maximum tire pressure we setted otherwise i suggest to let the pressure on stock.
Second important thing is use the rewind feature, but that you probably already know, i just saying because i didn't used it when i was trying the last 200 times, but always on the testdrive where you can adjust and tune your car during the race and there is no rewind feature..
After i tried it in the Hot Lap i knocked it out in the first try.. just rewind every turn if you hit the wall or spin off..

This was the hardest 5G for me since i'm playing on the Xbox 360. So ok, the folks before me said a lot of good suggestions but i'm still think the best way if you learn how to control the car in the corners, and where to drift. Yes, the Fujimi Kaido "Full Circuit" is the best track to do this, but i didn't prefer non of the mentioned cars. I used the 2009 Twingo Renault Sport Cup in the class "S", because it's very easy to control, you can easily drift with it, it's small and quite fast. The only thing i changed in options that i turned off the ESP, and almost everything else too (but i let the ABS working)
If you can earn 60.000 points before the third tunnel, you are ok which is somewhere at the 60-65% at the track. At the 75% of the track there are a few wide corners and sectors and you can also drift in the straight too. Use the rewind option and try to do 2500-3000 points in these sectors, cause you gonna need them, really. (To be honest, the first half of the track is not so good and hard to earn more than 1000-1100 points)
Third tunnel at 6:15.
And the wide sections at 6:52
I hope this helped a bit, just try out this little car. It's very convincing
*Thanks to APOAL FR for correcting me!

Use the same method as Drifter on a single lap at either Nurburgring or Fujima Kaido. Make sure you get 100,000 points on a SINGLE LAP, not just the entire race. Make sure you drift around every turn to get the most points.
