How to unlock the California Drifter achievement in Forza Motorsport 5 - Definitive Guide
This achievement took me under an hour once I had worked out the score for each corner. I have uploaded my replay however it is very much trial and error. Please note these are merely estimations, you may be able to out-perform on certain corners, and slack slightly on others. For reference my exact scores after Turn 4 and Turn 7 were 6,895 and 12,488 respectively. As mentioned in the comments, you can make the hairpin in turn 8 into a separate turn and drift, however from my experience I found you scored higher by linking the two turns into one long drift. I personally scored over 3000 on Turn 8.
For this achievement used my own Kia Cee'd Drift tune, however from the comments of people with less drifting experience, "exxDudexx" has a tune for a Mazda RX7 called "mazda drift tune 500". If you get stuck on a corner and really can't score what others have scored, move on, and try to make up for the score on the next corner.
Please see what scores others have achieved on each corner in the comments, as these numbers were estimated from what I achieved on each corner and are not concrete.
No traction control, no stability and no ABS. Please use normal steering. Use manual shifting and shift to 2nd at the start (by pressing B) and leave it there. When the corners become yellow pull the e-brake and let it slide itself, no gas, then feather the gas to maintain the drift. You will use lots of rewinds. After each corner has been added, turn around and get a fresh run-up for the next drift. The key to getting a high score is a combination of entry speed, the angle of the drift and length. You will want to enter with as much angle and around the 60 mph speed, making your drift last as long as possible as sideways as possible.
IMPORTANT: THE DRIFT WILL ONLY COUNT BETWEEN THE CONES AND THE TYRES ON EACH CORNER. IT IS NOT LIKE PREVIOUS FORZAS, YOU CANNOT GET SCORE ON THE STRAIGHTS.
As the corners are not massively forgiving, you will need to start on the opposite side to where the driving line suggests, sweep across and then e-brake to start the turn where the yellow starts. For a lot of corners it will naturally drift without gas, and you will only be required to maintain the drift to get the score necessary on that corner. 2nd gear should have decent power at all times and never go above 70 mph so you will always have a good entry speed.

I can not, for the life of me, get more than 1250 on the third corner.

Another good tune for people struggling is for the GMC Syclone by snd woom988. To find the tune use keywords 1 drift and keyword 2 beginner.
I originally got the achievement using rewind but wanted to get 15k in a clean lap which I did.
Here is a video to show gears, speed, lines, scores etc.

Once again you are a God send. This is the car to use. I appreciate all of the good advice you have given over the years in this series game. Thanks bro.

Is there something people arent mentioning to do? Every one of these cars people recommend, i download the setups and my tires overheat before I even go into the turns... do full 360s and get no points. Am I supposed to be adjusting tire pressure or something?! Help!

Here's yet another tutorial vid and associated tune. I'd normally not post this as there are plenty of other solutions above, but after trying all of the other suggestions and spending a good 10 hours or so on this achievement, this worked out best for me. It's definitely pretty forgiving and I found it the easiest to handle by far.

All credit goes to Beetfarmer89. I'm just reposting his good work as I don't think it's been mentioned anywhere on this site.
Be aware that this achievement is hard and unless you have a decent amount of drifting experience it'll take you a good amount of time to crack, but it is definitely doable. Practice, take it slow, rewind and keep trying. You'll get there eventually. Try and match the scores on each corner as noted in the other solutions. There's nothing more disheartening than getting to the end and finding you just can't squeeze enough points out of the last corner. That said, don't get hung up on the odd 100 points here and there. There is definitely some wiggle room. FiLo's lap comes in at 16,200 and some of the top guys have around 20k.
For assists; Traction, stability and ABS all off. Manual shifting and steering normal. Damage to cosmetic.
All the best and keep at it.
EDIT: To all those struggling to find the tune, please follow the suggested steps by x Slick Hick X
- Go to Career
- Go to Buy Cars
- Buy the car (1995 Ford SVT Cobra R)
- Back out to main menu and go to tune/upgrade
- Search for the tune and install it (L2DRIFT by Beetfarmer89)

As of today, the tune is still there. (I used it today) One tip I'd like to add for those struggling is that the Handbrake is very useful in controlling your drifts. It's not just tap it to start the drift and then feather the throttle.
I had many corners where I would hit 1800-1900 but couldn't keep myself from sliding into the wall at the end. Finally figured out that you can hold down "A" (handbrake) to slow yourself down a regain a little control. Also lets you throttle a little longer too. You can also hold handbrake down longer at the start if needed.
It's a little hard to explain but when you're constantly rewinding the same corner over and over, try it out and see if it doesn't help. It can take a 1500 point corner and let you throttle it out to 1800-1900 by keeping you away from the wall.
Anyways, thanks for the car setup.

Yes! Yes, yes yes!! This achievement literally took me all day... After multiple previous attempts of not even being able to break 1000 on the first corner, today I told myself I was going to get this achievement even if it took me all day... And it did! But now I have it
Took me two attempts. On my first lap I got too cheeky and continued on saying, "I'll make up the points later" on the first 4 turns. Haha, and it came back to bite me as my first lap I only got 14,200. The first two turns alone (on my first lap) took two hours of practice, just to get the hang of drifting and the car and such. And the video tutorial was watched many, MANY times, over and over. Like I said, took me two laps. The first lap took about 4-5 hours and the second lap only took about 45 minutes, and I even got the first turn on my first try with 1850 points! Anyway, here are my approximate scores for my second lap (don't remember my scores for the first lap, sorry):
Turn 1: 1850 (1850)
Turn 2: 900+550 (I got a really good drift going on the first half of the turn but couldn't continue it, so I backed up, got a running start, and continued drifting for the rest of the turn) (3300)
Turn 3: 1400 (4700)
Turn 4: 1400 (6100)
Turn 5: 1900 (8000)
Turn 6: 1900 (9900)
Turn 7: 2000 (11,900) (This turn is really wide, I would recommend going for at least 1900 on this turn, no less, especially if you are under 10,000 going into it)
Turn 8: 2800 (14,700)
Turn 9 (hairpin): 550 (15,250)
Lastly, I used the Mazda since it was recommended so many times and I can agree that it works wonders!

Nice tip for you guys.
You can use the rewind-option.
It worked for me perfectly.
You just have to insure that the 15.xxx unclean is your "best lap".
After you quit this event the achievement pops up.
Again insure that the unclean 15.xxx is your best lap.
I had a 13.xxx clean also on my run and it did not counted my 15.xxx
because they were unclean so I had to do it again *hmpf*
This is the only important aspect.
And by using rewind its still not easy but way easier.
I used a Mazda RX-7 and the setup from xxDudexx (or similar).

This solution is an alternative to DanAsker's (whose solution is quite spot on). DanAsker's point setup per turn is definitely a very good guideline for how you want to do this, but I had a lot of trouble using the Kia Cee'd. Instead, I used the Ariel Atom which is much less prone to over-rotation and tire overheating. I have a basic R 900 setup on it, which I have saved and called "basicsetup". You can adjust the tire pressures and stiffness to your liking (I left them as default). If the tires are not getting hot enough, decrease pressure. If you are overcooking the tires before you are near the end of your drift, increase the pressure.
EDIT: I used all assists off, cosmetic damage, and manual shifting. Remember that rewind is your friend! Second gear puts you at about 75 mph which works very well for drifting!
NOTE: I broke up the Turn 8 section into 3 sections (technically there are two turns plus the hairpin). If you can get about 1500 in the first part of Turn 8 and the second (or do 3000 for both), it makes the hairpin only require about 500 or less depending on how close you are to DanAsker's point totals.

The solutions above have good information. However, after working on this for some hours, there are a few things that I want to point out that were not apparent to me reading any of these solutions and the online forums. The vehicle I used was the Ford Cobra with the L2DRIFT tune mentioned here by Boothdom. First off, do the other two drift achievements before attempting this to get a feel for drifting (assuming you are new to this).. Once you have those down, pick the car/tune of your liking. I believe any of the cars/tune setups posted here are good options- I liked the Ford and got the achievement with that but I also used the Mazda also which feels similar to me- just had not practiced enough with it. Next watch this Youtube video by DiscoVolante.
When he made the video, he was high on the leaderboards- probably still is.
For me, I got many more helpful tips from watching this than any other solution video here or elsewhere. Take note of the exact location of starting the drift, the gear he is in, and the speed when drift is activated. Take some notes and have them handy for the run. For example, I was trying to do the last turn at too low of a speed and never could get the points I needed. Watch the video of the last turn and you will see that he enters the drift in 3rd gear and at 60+MPH (and pretty far back). He pulls off over 4000pts plus another 666 on the hairpin at the end. Of course it will still take lots of practice. This is not my video and I don't know him but it was so helpful that I though it needed to be shared.
In case the video link does not work, he calls it Californian Drifter.
