How to unlock the Bearer of 120 Awards achievement in Gyromancer - Definitive Guide

Note: This works for the Bearer of 3, 7, 15, 30, 50, 75, 100, 120 Awards achievements.

Stages 1 – 10 have similar awards, Here is how to obtain them:

Beat the stage – Play the story, this will unlock as you progress through each stage and beat the final boss.

Score 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 points – This is easy. Score the points needed for each award. You can farm lairs until they stop spawning creatures then take down the boss. You can re-enter any stage and farm it through again after you’ve beaten it. Be careful while actually battling, If you increase your puzzle score while playing, you’ll get more points per battle. Don’t rush through each fight or you won’t have enough points in the earlier stages.

Someone on the xbox360achievements.org forums posted that this is a good strategy; I take no credit for this:
In order to receive easy points each fight, use a monster such as the 2nd and 3rd tier beetles (with Trident). Damage the opponent to low life, and then let your ability gems build up. Make it a priority to remove the enemy ability gems so they don't destroy your own. Simply keep building up until it is impractical to continue, and then match a Trident. Trident will destroy an extremely large area, destroying enemy ability gems, rocks, as well as your other ability gems--setting off a chain reaction of more Tridents, covering most of the field. You should receive a very large overkill bonus(several hundred, I've seen as much as a thousand) as well as receive a large number of puzzle points simply from the buildup period and any cascades or rocks/enemy gems destroyed at the end.

Remove Barrier (A, B, C, D) – These are the wooden barriers located around each stage. It relates to a specific barrier. You can remove these by stepping on the corresponding trigger tile. Once you beat a stage you should go back into it, and as you progress around, you’ll unlock these to continue moving. Some areas are inaccessible until after you’ve cleared the stage boss.

Defeat Monster (A, B, C, D) - These can be distinguished by an icon by the monster's name when encountering them on the stage map. They will typically stand out, by being in dead ends, trapped behind barriers, etc… Similarly to the barriers, you can get these in a second run through of a map/stage.

Defeat Lair of Monsters (A, B, C, D) - When you walk onto a lair on the stage map, you will fight a boss monster that is a bit stronger than the creatures the lair has been producing. Defeating this stronger boss monster will destroy the lair, giving the award. Not all lairs are connected to an award. You’ll probably destroy them all anyways while working towards another award, but I’ll get to that later.

Open Treasure Chest (A, B, C, D) – This is a very uncommon award. In the Grove of Prey stage, there will be chests destroyed by monsters if they reach them before you. You will have to go through the level once or twice to open up all the barriers before you will be able to have a path through to the proper chests. It’s a race in steps to the chest.

Stage 11: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
The Awards won’t show until it has been beaten for the first time (as it’s the last stage of the game). Afterward you will be tasked with defeating the leader of each affinity type, each being an award, as well as a "secret boss". You will need to take the transporters to the sides of the map (only available after completing the stage and going back) to open the barriers. Then in the central area you fought the final boss you will see paths branching out to a number of lairs. Each lair corresponds to a different affinity/beast and award. After clearing all of the affinity lairs and their bosses a new final enemy will spawn where you originally fought the final boss, defeating him will give you the final award for the stage. (Note: You must clear all the lairs in one go to spawn the boss. If you die or leave the level you will have to start over, though the barriers stay down.)

Stage 12:
Stage 12 is the Challenger’s Door. This will be rough. I find it is easiest to just replay the first couple of stages while working towards the majority of these Awards, as you don’t want to worry about them as you’re reaching the end.

Challenger's Door - Complete the stage Challenger's Door. There are 15 battles total, fought survival style (i.e. no HP restored b/w fights). Good luck. Some recommend the Goliath (spider: tier 3) for this.

Overkill - Win a battle with a killing blow that deals more than 10% of your foe's max HP. Probably come naturally.

Not a Scratch - Win a battle with your beast at max HP. Probably come naturally.

Rise to the Challenge - Win a battle using a beast that has less than 20% of its max HP at the start of the battle. Probably come naturally.

Waste Not, Want Not - Win a battle without making a single idle twist(a twist that makes no sets).

These next few will require some planning:

Close Shave - Win a battle while your beast has less than 1% of its max HP. Try with a high HP monster. Try within the first few battles, obviously. Good luck.

Blank Slate - Destroy all the gems on the board with a single twist. Use a Phalanx (Beetle: tier 3). Let Tridents build up on the board. Wait until they are positioned so that the width of their blast will take out every column.

Cascade x 7 - Make a seven cascade with a single twist. Give it up for dumb luck! Gem changing ability gems seem to help a lot. Try to use the Dark Hunter’s (Ant: Tier 3) Nightmare ability which should help with starting more cascades.

7- Gem Match - Make a match of seven or more gems in the same row with a single twist.
Hardest. Award. Ever. You will have to repeatedly fight the first Caith Sith and try to setup one of the 7 match designs detailed under "The Knowing" achievement (follow the link to the xbox360achievement.org forum post, it shows a nice way to set up a lot of the different special moves needed for the
Cascade x 7, 7-Gem Match and the Perfect Twist x4). Steer clear of a beast that drops Locks.

The Perfect Twist - Make 4 or more sets with a single twist. The wording is just a strange way of saying make a Combo x4. Reference the diagram for Combo Stones under "The Knowing" achievement(follow the link to the xbox360achievement.org forum post, it shows a nice way to set up a lot of the different special moves needed for the Cascade x 7, 7-Gem Match and the Perfect Twist x4). You will most likely get it during normal play by luck. Keep watch for parts of the board with multiple sets of two which could be turned into the right set. If needed, use idle twists to setup the combo if it’s close.

I take only credit of simplifying and reformatting some of the information provided here. A lot of help came from the people/person beyond the link.

EDIT: Additions made through comments thanks to: Zatosan, Mtld, HeyMrBassman

**
(1) 7-Gem Match: (from Cringer85) use a Vulture (upgraded Cait Sith) and get the following somewhere on the board:
white-(any)-white-white-(any)-white-white
The "(any)" stones must be the same color. Then hope for your Freeze ability stone to land on that color and BAM! You've got it. This took me several tries, but worked well for me.

(2) Challenger's Door: just completing this level proved very tricky. Again from Cringer85, just use the Resheph as your creature. I'm not sure if the board always starts the same way, but you do get three ability gems to start, and that helps as you can take down enemies with just a few moves if you're lucky.

(3) Close Shave: from Orion Ben (also from that link in your post). Use Web Spinner, and let the first creature mimic your "Web Hunt" spell 6 times and use it's "Tail Slash" twice, then you'll be under 1%. Any other ability gems from the opponent, try to destroy them. You hopefully have a few gems of your own saved up so you can quickly dispatch the opponent once you're HP are low enough.
**

If you are planning on purchasing the DLC, than you can use the beasts from the DLC to complete the Challenger's door. Both Resheph or the Green Dragon are extremely useful to get through the 15 levels of survival. I was going nowhere with the Goliath, but got it 1st try with the Green (Elder?) Dragon.
***
****
Challenger's Door - I used the Sol Volk as he can change the colour of gems, destroy locks and his abilities seem to recharge quicker than the Goliath. I used ended up using about 5 hocks of meat and a couple of magic mirrors throughout the levels.

Cascade x7 - this was an absolute b*tch and I used the Colossal Watcher, Dark Hunter and Sol Volk with no luck. I evenutally got a 8x (!) cascade using the Vulture against the Cait Sith on the first level, but it took still took many, many attempts. Don't be afraid to use a couple of hocks of meat if it looks like the board is set up nicely - exit to the dashboard if you're unsuccessful to save your items.

Very inclusive guide, well done. I had a devil of a time with three of the awards at Challenger's Door. I followed your link and found great ideas on how to beat them. They were posted after you posted your solution here, so I'll list them:

Great guide and loads of help so far, thanks - the external link offers excellent extra reading too.

+1 to Zatosan's 7 gem match comment - I did it with the Colossal Watcher. Watch out though because I'm pretty sure if you do an 8 gem match, it won't give you the award.

Anyway, I'm down to my last two awards now (complete challenger's door and 7x cascade) . I haven't bought the DLC yet, but I'm tempted considering I've actually been enjoying this game a lot.

Ok, got the last two awards tonight, without DLC. Just posting what worked for me in case it helps other people:

A heads up for the Challengers Door, whenever you load your savegame, it is immediately erased (so once you load, you can't go back- no dashboarding etc) and if you lose any battle, you have to start again from the first.

Except I found a way round that. Save your game. Quit to dashboard. COPY the savegame data to another memory unit (USB etc). Play as normal. If you lose (or a battle doesn't go too well), quit to dash and this time copy the savedata from USB to HDD. Repeat.

Interestingly, I found that each time I loaded up the same savegame, the initial board placement was IDENTICAL. Countdown gems in the same places, same gem order etc. But change the memory device and it changes the board! (I have a 4GB built in memory, plus my 250GB HDD plus a USB). Each time I loaded the save from HDD it was the same. But every time I loaded from the 4GB it was the same as well (but different from the HDD). And if I loaded from the USB, it was the same again, but different from the other two.
So if you start off with bad gem placement, try playing from a different memory unit to change the start. Just remember which memory unit you're using (so you know which has a save and which doesn't!).

can anyone give anymore tips to the perfect twist and the 7x cascade in the challengers door than what is already stated? The fact that someone says you will "get the perfect twist probably through natural progression" is absolutely ludicrous. It is extremely hard to set that stuff up when you have an opponents ability gems to worry about. Nigh on impossible. Not to mention the batshit pure luck that is 7x cascade. Ive tried the 3rd Tier Ant a MILLION times. Doesnt work. ANY other advice would be really really nice.

Does the DLC add more awards in? Or just the 3 achievements and 3 new monsters to use? The last 3 awards i'm missing are from the Challenge Door, and I just can't seem to get them. Perfect Twist, 7-Gem Match, and Close Shave are proving to be a pain.

Finally got Close Shave, which was my last award on stage 12. I tried the method with the poison, but was having trouble so I decided to find a much simpler way. I just chose Cait Sith and had the enemy Cait Sith use its Tail Slash 3 times and Mimic my Tail Slash 3 times which brings you down to 12 HP. Much simpler than all the guides I've read since all the enemy can hit you with is that move and it always does 298 damage. 298*6 = 1788 damage and you have 1800 HP MAX.

Vulture creature is actually a level 3 Aevis (White), Puca is the lvl 2 Cait Sith (Green). I got lucky and on my second attempt I completed a full horizontal row of 8 white's when the Vulture's Avalanche spell went off........unfortunately the achievement didnt pop. Even though the achievement reads 7 or more gems in a single row it only pops when you do 7. Or I just got really unlucky

I can't for the life of me find the second "beast the lurks in the woods" on Chapter 8: Swallow's Flight. I can't stand this level. So many teleporters and I can't keep track of which ones I went through. Any help would be appreciated. I can't find any guides online for it.

EDIT: Found him in the top right area.

-- Easy 7-Gem-Match challenger solution! --

most people have the hardest time with the 7-Gem-Match challenge award. So here is my very easy solution to do this one! For a complete list of all awards (if required) see Freeleeday's fine solution.

- Here is the method that I developed for the Challenger's Door. It might be easiest for you - it certainly was for me:

Use the Vulture. Then make a building like this in the lowest row:

white-(any)-white-white-(any)-white-white

note that the two not-white stones must be the same color. Now hope for a Freeze-ability-stone that is the same color of the two (any) stones. Use the ability stone, and the two (any) stones will turn white. There you have it, a 7-gem match!

Good solution, but notice that IT has to be in a ROW ... I did an eight match column and did not count, my mistake.
Any tip for getting The Perfect Twist???

For some strange reason this solution didn't work for me with the Vulture but worked with the Dark Hunter. Is there a rule that the (any) gems mustn't be enemy ability gems?

it's so long ago, I can't say for sure... but I think the two (any) gems must be any color (except white), because enemy ability gems wouldn't turn white when using the Vulture's ability.

Each of the 12 stages have 10 awards, so in order to receive this achievement you must get every one. Stages 1 through 10 share similar designs to their awards, which will require one of the following conditions:

Beat the stage - Obtained simply by defeating the boss monster, and progressing the storyline.

Remove a certain barrier - These are specific wooden barriers located around each stage map. They can be removed by stepping on the corresponding trigger tile (the isometric square panels). You will need to remove all of them in each level to get around regardless, so it shouldn't be an issue getting the appropriate award barrier. Some may not be accessible until you have completed the stage.

Defeat a certain monster - These can be distinguished by an icon by the monster's name when encountering them on the dungeon map. They will typically stand out, by either being stationary in dead ends, trapped behind wooden walls, and so forth.

Defeat a lair of monsters - When you walk onto a lair on the dungeon map, you will fight a boss monster, a stronger version of the beasts produced by the lair. Defeating the boss monster will destroy the lair, giving the appropriate award. Not all lairs are connected to an award, though you will most likely want to destroy them all regardless so shouldn't have any issues finding the award lairs.

Open a certain treasure chest - This is the rarest of the standard award criteria. Some chests in the Grove of Prey stage will be destroyed by monsters if they reach them before you. You will have to go through the level once or twice to open up all the barriers before you will be able to have a path through to the chests. Then it is just a matter of racing to the appropriate chest.

Score 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 points - Simply score the appropriate value. This is extremely easy to farm from a lair, as they will constantly spawn new monsters. While each lair can only spawn a limited number, there is still far more than enough.

In order to receive easy points each fight, use a monster such as the 2nd and 3rd tier Beetles (with Trident). Damage the opponent to low life, then let your ability gems build up. You should receive a very large overkill bonus (several hundred, I've seen as much as a thousand) as well as receive a large number of puzzle points simply from the build up period and any cascades or rocks/enemy gems destroyed at the end.

Stages 11 and 12 have very different Awards than the other 10. Stage 11 will initially show "???" for the Awards until beaten for the first time (ie: complete the game). Afterward you will be tasked with defeating the leader of each affinity type, each being an award, as well as an extra "secret boss". You will need to take the teleporter to the sides of the level(only available after completing the stage and going back) to open the barriers. Then in the central area you fought Everett (the final boss) you will see paths branching out to a number of lairs. Each lair corresponds to a different affinity/beast and award. After clearing all of the affinity lairs and their bosses a new final enemy will spawn where you originally fought Everett, defeating him will give you the final award for the stage. (Note: You must clear all the lairs in one go to spawn the boss. If you die or leave the level you will have to start over, though the barriers stay down.)

Stage 12 is the Challenger's Door, and the awards here are where the going gets really rough. It is often easiest to replay to first fight rather than risk attempting them in a real push through the stage. You don't want to be near the end and get hung up trying to get Awards.

While some information is reproduced here, Raven2Go's forum post on the Challenger's Door is highly recommended reading. (Link here)

Challenger's Door - Complete the stage Challenger's Door. This one is obvious enough. There are 15 battles total, fought survival style (without hit points restored between fights). Forum member Raven2Go recommends using Goliath (3rd tier Spider), as his ability to destroy locks for damage can get you through situations that otherwise have very difficult to avoid damage. See Raven2Go's post linked above for more details on the battles and some great tips on the boss.

Overkill - Win a battle with a killing blow that deals more than 10% of your foe's max HP. Again, an obvious one. You should be able to get this right away, just make sure you use a high damage monster.

Not a Scratch - Win a battle with your beast at max HP. This will have to be done right out the gate, simply don't get hit during the first battle.

Close Shave - Win a battle while your beast has less than 1% of its max HP. While you can certainly get this via shear luck simply attempting to defeat the Challenger's Door, most likely you will consistently end up just above 1% life if not killed outright. For obvious reasons you will want to keep attempts at this award to the first few battles, restarting at the start and doing battle with the Cait Sith and other early monsters. Using a high HP monster is also very important obviously, so go with either the Gigas at 4200 or one of the ones that weigh in around 3000. 1% would of course be your beast's life with the last two zeroes removed. (I feel stupid for even feeling the need to say that.)

Rise to the Challenge - Win a battle using a beast that has less than 20% of its max HP at the start of the battle. This will probably come naturally as you play through. If you need to try specifically for it, just take some damage while setup to finish your opponent off and wait until you get below 20%. Finish off your opponent, and then take care of the following one as well.

Waste Not, Want Not - Win a battle without making a single idle twist (a twist that makes no sets). Again, an obvious one. You shouldn't have any trouble here, though it helps to use a high damage beast and destroy your opponent before you run out of matches.

Blank Slate - Destroy all the gems on the board with a single twist. This can be irritating due to shear bad luck, though the method is simple enough. Use a Phalanx (3rd tier Beetle), and let Tridents build up on the board. Wait until they are positioned so that the width of their blast will take out every column. (Idle twist them into place if you have to, but be careful they arent destroyed or not lined up properly to set one another off.)

Cascade x 7 - Make a seven cascade with a single twist.
For the most part this is simple luck, though having an abundance of gem changing ability gems out (such as the Dark Hunter's (3rd tier Ant) Nightmare ability) will aid in triggering more cascades. (Raven2go recommends the Colossal Watcher.)

7- Gem Match - Make a match of seven or more gems in the same row with a single twist.
This is easily the most difficult of the game's Awards. Outside of shear dumb luck(which you most certainly shouldn't bank on in the slightest) you will have to repeatedly fight the first Caith Sith and try to setup one of the 7 match designs detailed under "The Knowing" achievement. This can take many attempts, so don't go in expecting to knock it out the first few times. You have to be very careful about enemy gems disrupting the setup. While removing them is of course your first priority, if you can't you should twist them away so as to keep the explosions out of reach of the gem setup. You should definitely not use a beast that is lock or rock oriented, and using something like the Sol Volk that replaces enemy gems can also help.

The Perfect Twist - Make 4 or more sets with a single twist. The wording is just a strange way of saying make a Combo x4. Reference the diagram for Combo Stones under "The Knowing" achievement. This might seem daunting while battling for your life, but you will most likely get it during normal play by chance. Just keep an eye out for parts of the field that have multiple sets of two which would probably be a large focus anyway. If you need to you can sacrifice a game with idle twists to setup the combo if there is a spot that is close but not quite there.
