How to unlock the Surveyor achievement in METAL GEAR SURVIVE - Definitive Guide

You must discover every gray square on the entirety of both maps. They must each be at 100%.

Use the map indicator located above your health/stamina numbers and to the right of your thirst percentage. It looks like an antenna with radio waves around it. When you enter an unclaimed square, the antenna will disappear, meaning you've now discovered it. If the antenna is visible, then you are in part of the map you've already discovered. Also, LISTEN for a chime when the antenna turns on/off.

Return to base camp to save any uncovered map. You can hit the back button and RETURN TO BASE CAMP to save (so you don't have to run back to a transporter, but you will drop any loot you picked up).

You will have to run in all sorts of nooks and crannies to claim certain squares. To discover one particular square, I had to hang & shimmy along a ridge above the river in map 2 to discover it.

There is a patch of deadly dust on map 2 behind Ruins 3. Try to run into it and then run back out to claim any gray squares you're missing. You don't have to run too far but running into the river will Force the game to revert back to last save. This will cause you to lose any progress. If you die, be sure to choose to return to home base, as this will save your claims. Do not revert back to last save.

This is a bit of a grind. You'll have to choose when to fight or move on to conserve O2 for more exploration. I found it helpful to try to run the perimeter. Save. And then shave off rows of gray squares inside that perimeter. Use the GUIDE MARKER feature to mark the beginning, then the end of a row you want to discover and run the line straight as possible.

Be safe and sure that you can make it back to base camp to save your work.

The achievement unlocks after you discover your last square and return to base camp. The percentage for each map is shown by hitting Start and RB over to map, in the top left corner under EXPLORED.

I never used any equipment to discover parts of the map except for one gray square only. RAMPS can be created at a Gadgets Workshop -> under Other Units. So it may be helpful to have some ramps on you to use as you try to climb rocks. You can jump from the end of the ramp. But be aware that the ramps are hard to place as it needs to be a near flat surface.

^nice brag comment.

This is some BS game design making you have to run deep into the killzone areas.
You HAVE to die to get a couple of blocks far north of ruins 3!
There's not enough time to drop down the ledge and climb back up.
There's hardly even enough time to run straight in, then head back for a just few seconds.
BUT if you choose to return to base camp after dying, you void the survive 140 days achievement apparently.

Not true about the 140 days achievement. You have bad intel. Check the guide from this site. I can also confirm what the guide says about surviving 140 days.

Running deep into the dust areas is what makes the game thrilling. It also makes the achievement more rare and challenging.

I reread and rewrote and edited this guide several times over several days. I take pride in my work and there's absolutely no reason to downvote this guide. All the information you need is there because I used all the information on my own with no assistance and unlocked the achievement successfully.

I didn't put a negative. I play on Playstation.
I don't have a problem with the normal dust, just that they want you to run into map perimeter killzones that kills you to get map coverage that they shouldn't have required

My friend claimed you had to fall off the waterfall to get it to trigger. You say you had to shimmy. I can confirm you don't have to do either. I just stoody at the tippy tip of the edge and uncovered it.

If you're talking about directly South of Singularity Area 01, and directly East of Transporter 05, those blocks are not counted to the trophy and can't be filled in (out of bounds).

Yep, that area looks likes it was partially explored for me. It has a make-shift fence. Nope, you do not have to get those. I had two squares in there right at the edge of the map and got me 100%.

As for the dust behind ruins 3 I figured all this out on my own with no assistance. I described my experience and I'm sure everyone is intelligent enough to figure it out on their own as well.
I don't brag, but I've never been Top 10 to unlock an achievement until tjis game. It's sad there are so few people who have played this game. There should be plenty of other people who got this achievement before me. But apparently not.
And the negative votes seem completely useless as they didn't leave a note or make their own guide. Nor did they leave any comments as to why they would downvote this guide. Everything I wrote and suggested worked for me after putting in the effort.

This is also quite a grind. You start out with a completely grey map. Once you walk into "the dust" you lose all GPS signals and you can't navigate using your map. All you have is your orientation and your memory. On top of that your oxygen tank will be ticking down so time is of the essence.

Every time you make it back alive, and arrive at Base Camp, the exact path you took will be mapped out on your map. For every square meter or so that you have stepped on, a block will be added to your map in this way. From that moment on, as long as you stay on that path, you’ll keep your GPS signal even in the dust.

This trophy requires you to uncover the entire map which is quite a grind as well. You'll take a while going back and forth to all corners of both maps. The upside is you’ll find a lot of materials and other collectibles. Always keep an eye out.

You need to have 100% on both cards, that is, open all the gray squares! This is an extremely tedious and difficult task: some squares on hills will require you to build towers, some require you to literally sacrifice yourself and use a resurrection pill. Some (about a dozen) on the second map I still haven’t figured out how to close. One guy on gamefaqs has started preparing a full map and guide for this trophy, so we're waiting...
A trophy for those who don’t mind their nerves and time)

I didn’t use any guides for opening the map (and there aren’t any, or rather I couldn’t find them), but sometimes to open black squares on the map (especially near mountains) you just need to jump into the texture a couple of dozen times.
Another feature of opening the map is that the places that you run through (black squares that are new to you) do not immediately open on the map, this happens only after teleporting to the main base. It’s inconvenient, I agree, but there is a little helper here. This is the sound of the display when moving from an unexplored area (black square) to an explored one - when you return from a black square to an open area, a slightly audible “pill” will be heard (I can’t describe it any other way). Therefore, if you are standing on the border of a black square and it seems to you that you have already opened it, do not rush, jump into the texture a couple of times until this sound occurs. I just came across a situation more than once (especially at the edges of the map) where everything seemed to open, but no, there was no sound, the square was black again and until it reached the floor of the location again I had to scratch
