How to unlock the Specialist achievement in Metro Last Light - Definitive Guide

To obtain this achievement you need to beat the 10 challenges for both the Shooting Range and the AI Arena.

Shooting Range:

Keep in mind that all the waves have a 25 score limit. Over time the targets become harder to hit and take more damage.

The first 8 waves are pretty straight forward, just aim for the square wooden targets, as the dummies take too much damage. I used 3x Tikhar Rifles with Reflex Scopes, Laser Sights & an Airtight Valve. The reason for this is threefold:

1. The Tikhar has 15 shots, which with full pressure instantly destroys the targets.
2. It fires as fast as you can pull the trigger and accurately, so if you slip up you can still compensate.
3. Having 3 of the guns allows for 45 shots without reloading, so when one runs out you can swap to the next and keep shooting.

The last two waves however consist solely of undead soldiers. These guys are very resilient to damage, and dodge like hell. After trying to take them out with the Prevet, I then had a great idea.

Simply use 3x Medved's (the grenade Launcher). These doozies instantly kill most enemies in their blast radius, which is pretty big and reload fast. There is an ammo box to the right wall you can use after exhausting all 3 guns. If you simply shoot for the enemy clusters you'll be fine.

AI Arena:

This area is more difficult than the last. The primary reason being that ammo is not obtainable from ammo boxes during these fights (although you can loot corpses for an occasional grenade or shotgun shell). Starting at 20 enemies to kill, it increases each challenge by 5 more enemies. You'll see Human enemies, Male Shrimps, Nosalis' & Watchmen.

For the first 8 waves all you'll really need are 2 Gatling guns & an Abzat (auto shotgun) I upgraded the Gatling gun with Five Barrel Assembly, Gatling Suppression and a Gatling Engine (You'll need the faster rate of fire). The Abzat was upgraded with a Muzzle brake, Laser Sight, Ammo Box & Auto-fire Adapter.

Then I simply stayed in the edge of the map where the several doorways are (left side) and camped by the doorway. When enemies came to the doorway I would unload with the Gatling gun (just keep the left trigger held down and fire in short bursts). The reason for two is that when one is used you can switch to the other then reload, with the Abzat as a close-range back-up. From 8-10 Undead enemies will replace the normal soldiers, and ammo gets very scarce. I then replaced one of the Gatling guns with the Flamethrower and used the same tactic, retreating further back when things got heated.

OMG ... i had 5 enemies left on Wave 10, i accidentally backed myself into a corner and died because i couldn't heal because i was getting hit too much. I was unaware the game decides to erase all progress towards waves 1-9. Have to start at wave 1 again ... i don't think this was to happen ... good guide though, for wave's 9-10 i used the Abazat, Gatling Gun and Flamethrower. When fueled up the Flamethrower takes out all the enemies real quick and has 400+ ammo. Much more efficient.

Also, use the save lever after every few waves. That's probably what caused you to start at 1 again.

As True XenoBlade said, the Flamethrower is a KILLER. In the last wave I was able to kill 45 enemies with about 50% of my fuel.

Yes, as when i went back and did the full 10 waves again, i only used the Flamethrower. It is the best weapon to use and kills everything super fast. As long as you pump it up every 3 or 4 enemies you'll never run out of ammo or need another weapon.

Just want to add that crouching down will reduce your weapon spread and make your shooting more efficient.
For Waves 9 and 10, I just chucked all my grenades out. Ran to the ammo box and repeat. You'll get each wave done in 15-20 seconds.

@oO NiGhTbAsE Oo, the Flamethrower is available at the same place as the other weapons; to the left of the "save lever", on the same wall that has the "day/night cycle" button on it. The Flamethrower is the second-to-last weapon in the list on the weapons rack menu, and has a little down-pointing arrow in the corner of the Flamethrower icon (indicating it is a DLC weapon).

@Andreka0, solid guide, +1 from me. Thanks.

I can't even complete this because the junk DLC is so buggy and won't spawn any enemies so I'm forced to quit out

It helped a lot once I realized that I had to pump the flamethrower to keep firing it. Upgrading the gatling is pretty key. I didn't the first round or two just because I didn't realize I could (I didn't read this guide very thoroughly).

The Medved idea is brilliant. I tried the undead shooting targets with just about every gun and then read your solution. I wasn't able to get above 20, but with the Medved, I polished off 25 of them with 20 seconds to spare. Brilliant!!!!!

Ok found the easiest way to do the Arena is sometimes the mudcrab thing will sort of block the entrance while glitched in the wall. Killed 30+ enemies by them simply trying to run through the crab, made it so much easier then my first attempts. Just shoot the sneaky Nosalises and Watchmen that sneak through.

Fantastic tip about using the flamethrower on the last waves of the Arena! I was able to beat wave 10 with just the flamethrower and nothing else.

Rounds 1 - 6, I only needed the RPK (extended clip) and the Saigon Shotgun I just had the flamethrower for my 3rd slot but never needed it.......From round 7, I only used the Saigon Shotgun (for Nosalis' & Watchmen), the Gatling Gun (shreds through those Male Shrimps like a meat grinder), and the flamethrower (for the Undead, and any stupid mutant who got in the way, lol)

Now stuck on that darn level 7 shooting range!!

A note on the shooting gallery:

From 1-8, I wound up using three fully upgraded Valve Sniper rifles. With upgraded ammo capacity, each rifle has 10 shots to it, and the 4x scope made hitting the distant, small targets much, much easier than other methods I've seen (especially the Gatling Gun method). Also, a head shot will kill the armored dummies in one hit, which is extremely useful in the off seconds where there are no bullseye targets in the field. Finally, as a bonus, the Valve shots will pass through targets/dummy heads and hit anything behind the shot, so occassionally you'll get two targets for one bullet (again, super useful if targeting a bullseye and a dummy moves into the field of view).

For 9 and 10, I used the Medved method listed above -- just wait for the zombies to cluster up and fire into the mob. You only get five shots total with the Medved but using the ammo crate to the right of the gallery, you get as many shots as you wish (after loading). Loading and hitting up the ammo crate will give the zombies time to cluster up, so everything will run smoothly using this method.

If you struggle in the last two waves of Arena Challenges see this video, stay in this corner and get your achievement!

This video show a easy way to you get the achievement (but takes a little more time than usual way):

Credits to TheBrothersGrim666 for make the video.

Another tip is: make sure that your difficulty (in Options menu) is set to Easy, to obviously make things more easier.

Hope that helps, if you see anything that I can improve in this solution please send me a PM or comment below. Thanks.

For those struggling with this achievement in the arena section for challenge 1-7 have in your load out 2 miniguns and a saiga shotgun.

Location to camp when entering the arena go down the first set of stairs nearest the arena exit and continue straight on until you hit a doorway, before you get to the doorway turn right and you'll run into a metal object camp here the enemies will spawn the other side of this.

With 2 minguns with the engine fiver barrel upgrades you should easily get through sections 1-7

What I did for sections 8-10 was have 2 saiga shotguns with extended mag and ran around the very outside of the map making sure i was always under the roofed section.

Humans and undead will not enter this section of the map nosalies will however they will chase you along with giant green shrimps you can ignore these as they are really quite slow or use your incendiary grenades to kill them quickly i just ignored them, Whilst running around you will hear the nosaslies spawn simply take them down whilst running around the edge of the map they will re spawn once you have killed all of them and are very easy to kill with the saiga.

You stated, "Humans and undead will not enter this section of the map" (very outside of the map under the roofed section)
Unless something changed via a patch, Undead Soldiers did indeed follow me under there, mainly in round 10

I like the way you think DEEVIUS, I used Saiga (muh fayvrit), minigun and flamethrower (great for those big crab guys that are green)

Nothing has changed; the undead soldiers do not enter covered passage on the outskirts of the arena unless you camp. Running from one part to the other will cause them to take cover in the middle.

Personally I found a combination of these solutions to be most effective. I used the Saiga (my favourite gun in the game), the flamethrower (highly effective when camping but dangerous), and the Gatling. I found that camping at the start and using the flamethrower and gatling for about 8-10 enemies, then relocating to the other camping areas much more effective. Camp, then relocate under the outskirts while killing Nosalises and Watchmen with the Saiga and shrimp with incendiaries. The occasional frag in the middle and claymore doesn't hurt neither.

Upon loading the level, you’ll be dropped into a “lobby” area of sorts that connects to the levels two areas. The Museum will be on your right and the SHOOTING RANGE/ARENA area will be on your left. When entering the SHOOTING RANGE/ARENA area, it is divided again with the SHOOTING RANGE to the left and the ARENA to the right. Go left and we’ll start in the SHOOTING RANGE.

SHOOTING RANGE

The range is pretty typical-looking in the sense that it’s a long room that clearly has slots in the walls on both sides where targets emerge for the player to shoot. In the room you stand in and fire from are a number of interactive items. Facing toward the range, the weapon selection wall will be on your left. The ammo restock will be on your right as will be the save lever which you will likely want to utilize each time you complete a challenge or two. The Challenge selection wall will be at your back.

Each Challenge requires the player to shoot and destroy 25 targets of various designs within a set time limit. There will be large and small flat targets and combat dummies (like the one from the main game’s gun range tutorial) that will start bare, but add more and more armor as each Challenge level progresses, and then eventually undead soldiers. In the early challenges many of the targets will be stationary, but as you progress more and more of them will be in motion.

Leaving the room at any time will discontinue the current Challenge.

Challenges 1-7
The first 7 Challenges can be completed with the exact same strategy:

From the weapon wall, choose the Gatling Gun and fill all three of your slots with it. You can choose whatever mods you like, but recommended are the extended clip and the one that allows continuous spin of the Gatling Gun’s barrels when you hold the left trigger. Be sure to modify all three copies of the weapon you hold. I found that the mod that supposedly makes the gun more stable can often lead to it not being able to spin up, and thus won’t fire, so I avoided that one. At any rate, replenish your ammo with the ammo crate and then press to cycle through the other weapons to make sure that they are fully loaded before you start any Challenge. In doing this, you will have 3 Gatling Guns with 150 rounds in each clip. When one goes empty, instead of waiting through the slow and lengthy reload animation, simply press to cycle to the next weapon and continue firing.

You should keep your focus on destroying the flat targets and the un-armored dummies. A single headshot on an unarmored dummy takes it down, but in each successive challenge the dummies will have on more and more armor that takes too long to get through, even with a Gatling Gun. While getting the required 25 targets will begin to become a little tricky in Challenges 6 & 7, it can still be managed. Be sure to save after every couple of completed Challenges, at least.

Challenge 8
By this Challenge, all of the flat targets are small and in motion for most of the challenge and with the dummies far too armored to even consider, I had to change strategies as I was just shy of completing it too many times. I switched out to a rifle with a 2x scope so I could hit the small flat targets much easier. The Kalash 2012 doesn’t seem to be as good at destroying targets as the plain old Kalash, if you’re wondering. If you have the RPK DLC installed, go with this gun in all three slots. Be sure to mod it with the extended drum clip (giving it 100 rounds per clip), the 2X scope and the laser sight. Then I stood as far back from the window into the range as possible so my back was against the Challenge board.

All of the small flat targets are oriented at the ceiling, so keep your sights trained upward and be sure to keep an eye on the ones that appear closer to you. Pulling back a little from the window allows you to see these targets in the scope’s peripheral a little better. It may take a few tries to get the rhythm of the pattern of the targets, however.

Challenges 9 & 10
These last two Challenges switch things up a bit. Instead of targets and dummies, squads of undead soldiers (the ones with the glowing red eyes) will appear from the slots in the wall. And they fire back!

For these two Challenges, switch all three of your weapons to the Medved grenade launcher. Again, this will give you more ammo to begin with and allow you to cycle through each one as it empties by pressing .

Before hitting the button to start the Challenge, throw your fire grenades into the floor near the second opening slot on each side of the range. Once they are burning hit the button and several of the undead soldiers will catch fire and die. After that, just allow as many of the undead soldiers to spawn into the room as possible and then fire a grenade somewhere in the middle of the group. The explosions are so powerful and violent that they will kill everything in the room. If you find that the amount of grenades you have has run out, you can replenish your ammo at the cache any time during the Challenge. You should clear these challenges in no time at all.

While you aren’t in grave danger, be sure to keep an eye on your health since they are firing back at you.

ARENA

Now go back and enter the ARENA area to do its set of Challenges. When you reach the main area, you will find a large control panel looking out onto a rectangular room with chest-high walls scattered about it. Standing facing the control panel, the Save lever will be behind you (again, be sure to use this after completing a Challenge or two). There are ammo caches all over the place here, including around the outer walls of the arena itself. The Challenge wall is inside the Arena on the left as you enter.

For each Challenge the player must kill a certain number of enemies set by the Challenge being done. Challenge 1 is completed by killing 25 enemies, and each successive Challenge will add 5 more kills to the total required for an ending total of 65 enemy kills needed to complete Challenge 10.

Choose whatever weapons you feel most comfortable, but try to be sure to have the Flame Thrower with you for Challenges 7-10. I used the RPK with the extended clip, the Shambler and the Flame Thrower for every Challenge and never ran out of ammo. Also, the game allows you to place up to 5 Claymores before hitting the button to begin a Challenge. If you attempt more than 5, they will begin to disappear starting with the first one you put down. So perish the thought of filling the arena with Claymores.

You can complete all 10 Challenges using the following strategy:

Run straight across the Arena from the control panel and entrance. In the middle of the opposite wall is a partition with opening on the left and right, take the left opening and look right and it should immediately dead end. Post up here with your back to the dead end and all of the enemies will spawn on the end of the arena opposite the Challenge Board (aka, behind you). From this position, all enemies will have to creep around to you and you can either wait for them to do it (which becomes necessity on later Challenges) or peek out and take them out one-by-one.

For the first 4 to 5 challenges, there will only be human enemies, but after that Noslaises and those Shrimps that look like giant praying mantises will be added to the mix. To conserve ammo, you should let the Nosalises get close and take them out with your combat knife by pressing . When the Shrimp do finally start showing up in Challenges 7 & 8, they will largely get themselves stuck on the opposite side of the wall from your position and will not attack you, though they will eventually navigate around the wall depending on how much you move around. At times, parts of their body will clip through the wall and you can knife them to death, though this takes a while. Better to pop out when it’s clear and use the Flame Thrower on them. In Challenges 9 & 10, the Nosalises will return and the human enemies will be undead soldiers. Be sure to use the Flame Thrower on the undead soldiers as they tend to be very heavily armored and it cuts right through them.

With a little patience and persistence, you should be able to do all 10 Challenges in no time.

After completing all 20 Challenges (10 Challenges in each area), the achievement will unlock.

To achieve this achievement, you need to complete 10 Range Challenges and 10 Arena Challenges on the Development Kit map.

I passed all the tests at the shooting range with the help of one weapon - the 3-barreled "Medved" grenade launcher. At the very end of the shooting range, 4 targets steadily appear, the main thing is to shoot at them in time, and it will not be difficult to score the necessary 25 points to move to the next level of the test. While they are being restored, you can destroy targets moving under the ceiling or mannequins.

For the arena, I can recommend weapons such as:

  • Gatling (required modifications: Barrel - Block of 5 barrels; Base - Barrel block drive; Miscellaneous - Gatling support),
  • Paragraph (required modifications: Miscellaneous - Laser target - Machine gun trigger - Enlarged cartridge box),
  • RPK (necessary modifications: Optics - Collimator sight; Miscellaneous - Laser target - Drum magazine), if you did not buy the RPK, then you can take a Kalashnikov with similar modifications, I think it will be no less effective.
In the first waves there will be no special problems with opponents; waves 8-10 are particularly difficult, where the opponents are mutants (at first only swamp creatures, and then there will be 2-3 mutants each) and “zombies” in armor. I recommend staying in the passage that is located behind the ammo box and the test number board; if you are pressed hard, run to the other end of this corridor. Swamp creatures are best killed with a Gatling gun with these mods (on waves 9-10 I had to save it), ordinary mutants are best killed with a Paragraph, and “zombies” that can enter your corridor are best killed with a RPK (or Kalashnikov) to the head , shooting at the body is practically useless. To get the most out of your Gatling gun, keep it held down. so that the barrels do not stop spinning, and when enemies are in sight, press . This way you'll get the most out of every shot.

If things don't work out, don't worry, you still need to spend 3 hours on this map to achieve Developer . Have a good hunting!

Our easy way to pass tests with mutants. Since in these tests it is not necessary to kill all the creatures, but rather to survive for a certain time. I just ran around the perimeter of the arena until time ran out.

Also, according to the tactics above, in the Arena I highly recommend using the Flamethrower, with it it is much easier to kill both mutants and zombies. You won’t notice how quickly you go through the wave.

Back in Tire, in the 9th and 10th trials, I recommend taking the Rail.

On the contrary, I personally used the “Rail” from tests 1 to 8 at the shooting range, from the modifications “eternal batteries” (of course it has a different name), but the effect is exactly the same, after a shot self-loading occurs, but tests 9-10 passed thanks to the “Medved” grenade launcher. . I walked through the arena until the 9th-10th test, and there I already used the advice and tactics listed above, it helped!
