How to unlock the Champion Driver achievement in NASCAR 14 - Definitive Guide

Last years fuel mileage trick isn't very effective in this game, but is still possible. With 4x tire wear and fuel, about half the field or more should pit in most races. The only problem is getting your finish to stick after the race. I think this glitch has to due with what position you're in when the leaders take the white flag.

Anyways, I found an easier method for this year. Although it takes longer than the fuel mileage method, I found it to be more effective. You can also do this on year one. I did it year two, but used the default parts from year one. If you do choose to do it year one, It will be nearly impossible to get the 2400 points and 20 poles, so you will need a second season regardless. Here are the settings you want for each race:

Difficulty: 90 %
Race Length: 20% (2% for Sonoma & Watkins Glen. Just race these tracks normal. 5% for Martinsville & Bristol. Race these normal and take whatever position you can get. Wrecking the cars will take forever on these tracks.)
Tire Wear: 4x
Fuel: 4x
Flags: Off
Damage: Full

Now that you have these settings, you can skip everything and jump right to the race. When the green flag drops, you can either stop the car around the start finish line or drive half a lap to the backstretch. Now, position your car so that the nose is pointing towards the outside wall on the track. Back your car up to the apron and wait for the pack to come around. The reason you're not waiting with your nose against the wall is because they will see you there and change lanes to avoid you. If you wait around the apron you can time it and collide with the pack. It is very important you postion the car across the track like I stated so that you don't take engine damage with a head on head collision. As the collisions start adding up you'll get flat tires and minor engine damage. Just go into pit under the red flag to repair this.

After a few wrecks, the field starts to get thinner and thinner, which makes this process a lot longer. If you see a lot of disparity in the results each race, I would settle for a top 10 finish each race and crash the car to end it quicker. Maybe a little better finish for the chase races. Also, make sure you run a few laps before you DNF. Sometimes if you're multiple laps down you may need to run a few laps to pass the cars you recently crashed out. One thing to point out though, the game will glitch this way as well, just like the fuel saving. I would say 90% of the time, the position that you cross in will not be the position they give you. That's okay though, just make the chase and go from there. As usual, you don't have to win everything in the chase, you just have to out do your fellow chase drivers. So be sure to know who is in the chase and look for them during the red flags.

Lastly, the game glitched in my favor multiple times, but I wouldn't count on it repeating for you as well. If the wrecks were so massive, every car would vanish, leaving just me. After I completed the next lap, I got first. Another glitch, sometimes the race will randomly end. The leader will take the checkered flag, sometimes it's actually over and you can settle for what you have or restart. Also, it could just being fooling you. If they are still coming at you at high speeds, the flag was a lie and proceed with knocking cars out.

Hopefully this helps, PM me or leave a comment if you need any further explanation or if you have a question that you think I may be able to help with!

** Helpful tips from AnotherSadPanda **

I just wanted to add that for whatever reason, if you line your car up just after the start/finish line and hit cars the leader there, it glitches and says the race is over and was won by whomever was in the lead at that point in time. BUT, if you've knocked someone out of the race, thus bringing up a red flag, the game restacks all the cars for a restart again, except it removes EVERY single car that crossed the start/finish line, after the race was "won" by the leader, but before the red flag was thrown.

So, basically, there were times where I could time the collision so that the entire field was removed from the race after the first lap, and so I was restarting the race in the lead as the only car in the field. I could, in effect, glitch everyone out of the race, and then finish one green flag lap to win it. I could then sim two to three races during the season, and then do the same for the next race. I couldn't get it to work every single time, but I'd say a good 2/3 of the time it worked like a charm. I got through the season on 90% difficulty in just over an hour.

** Helpful tips from x1001x Puppys **

-When the entire field disappears, the race will always end in two laps, a guaranteed good result.

-If you are constantly get knocked out by the field hitting you while parked sideways, try parking parallel to the wall and drive in reverse into the oncoming field. This will lessen the chance of your car being turned head on with the field and risking any engine damage.

-If you are having a hard time with one of Bristol, Martinsville, Watkins Glen, or Sonoma, try your luck simulating. These tracks can be difficult to stay competitive, so it may be worth a shot to just simulate it.

-Red flags run three laps for you, therefore, you do not have to run a few laps to pass any recently crashed cars. You will overtake them during the red flag.

This is epic. Thank you for sharing!

I assume you can simulate races, wouldn't that be best for the road courses? In the last game it gave away random finishes from 11th-35th if I recall correctly.

Not a problem! Wrecking the cars sure beats saving fuel!

Anyways, I'm pretty sure that you can simulate races, but I never did just to be safe. I think it's best to just do 2% rather than gamble and get a awful finish.

In my case though, I already started the season trying the fuel saving, so I needed good finishes to stay in the chase. The road courses are by far my best tracks, so I took advantage of these.

I can confirm that you can simulate races, but I haven't quite figured out the formula to my simulated finishes. When I tried to cut corners in single season (see my solution) I simulated 20 straight races. My first few were top tens, then top 20s, all the way down to five consecutive 43rds. I won two races and simulated 3, and it gave me 8th, 9th, 11th. I can't figure it out XD

The update that was released last July has tweaked the game enough that I think it warrants an update of your solution. I just got this achievement and would like to offer some helpful tips.

-The Chase was updated to reflect the new format. 16 drivers participate (up from 12). A win during the first 26 races (not including the Daytona Shootout, Duels, or All-Star race) gets you a spot as long as you're in the Top 30 in points (when I did this Danica Patrick had 2 wins but was 32nd in the points standings, so she was left out). If there are less than 16 drivers in the top 30 with wins, the Chase field is filled out by those highest in points without wins.

-The new Chase gives a lot of leeway. If you can take out most of the field and get Top 5s and 10s. You could make it in without a win (2 drivers got in without wins when I did it). But if you do manage a win, you can start simming chunks of races, 4-5 at a time. Just make sure that you don't fall out of the Top 30. Try to stay within the Top 20 just to be safe.

-In general, doing well in a race leads to decent finishes when you sim the next, with diminishing returns the more races you sim. Your results also get worse as the season wears on, despite good finishes.

-If the field disappears, the race ends in 1 lap, not 2, after a red flag.

-If you miss the pack, or leader, you can use rewind (press select) and retry your attempt. This also allows you to keep from going more than a lap down if you miss, since you can just rewind instead of waiting for the pack to make their way back around. If you fall too many laps behind it can make finishing higher harder.

-If all but a couple cars disappear after a red flag, the highest you can finish is 2nd, even if you finish first. Twice I won a race but only got a 2nd place finish. The game even gave me the Victory Lane cutscene. Other than that most of the time your finish sticks.

-The Chase is now seperated into 4 rounds consisting of 3 races each. After each round, the bottom 4 drivers are eliminated and the points are reset. This is done for the first 9 races, leaving 4 drivers to compete for the championship at Homestead.

-Any a Chase driver who wins one of the 3 races in a round automatically moves on to the next round. Keep this in mind. If at any point you win during the Chase, you can skip ahead to the beginning of the next round. You should prioritize good finishes over winning, as you can advance to the next round just by finishing well. For reference: the rounds are seperated like this. Round 1: Chicago, Loudon, Dover. Round 2: Charlotte, Kansas, Talladega. Round 3: Martinsville, Texas, Phoenix. Round 4: Homestead.

-Take note of who's in the Chase and knock them out. This is especially important as the Chase continues. Round 3 consists of 8 drivers fighting for 4 spots, so you want to finish ahead of your fellow Chasers. This is absolutely CRITICAL, though, in the final race. Basically the Chase driver who finishes highest wins the Cup, so you can't end the race until you've knocked out the other 3 finalists. When I did it I managed to make all but one car disappear, but he wasn't in the Chase, so even though he won, I still won the Cup.

I hope everything I mentioned here is pretty clear. If you think this is too long to copy into your solution I can make my own or you can point to my comment in yours.

I am writing new guides for this game going into 2020. It’s pretty outdated, but I figure it can’t hurt to help out.

I would like to credit Bongo, AnotherSadPanda, x1001x Puppys as I used their solution to obtain this achievement.

Do not let this achievement deter you from playing this game, it is extremely easy due to a glitch. This solution is for anyone looking for a quick and easy way to get this achievement. I wouldn’t label it as a “legit” strategy because it’s game breaking. You won’t need any R&D and you can do this in your first year no problem.

First things first, start up a career mode. Go to the first race weekend and setup the event. It should look something like this (Taken from Bongo):

Difficulty: 90 %
Race Length: 20% (2% for Sonoma & Watkins Glen. Just race these tracks normal. 5% for Martinsville & Bristol. Race these normal and take whatever position you can get. Wrecking the cars will take forever on these tracks.)
Tire Wear: 4x
Fuel: 4x
Flags: Off
Damage: Full

This will stay the same for the entirety of career mode.

The Bud Shootout will be your first event at Daytona. You should go into the weekend and set it up like above. This is so the game registers your 90% difficulty. After that, you can retire from that event as it doesn’t net you any points.

Your second event will be the Daytona 500. This will be the first event you should perform the glitch on. This glitch is very easy, if anything it just takes a bit of patience and timing. I couldn’t find a picture depicting the situation, so I will try my best to describe it.

Once the race starts, begin to drop back and let everyone pass you. You will want to stop right after the Start/Finish line. From here, what I did was line up parallel to the Start/Finish line leaving a slight gap between the line and my car. It should be fairly easy to set up.

The only hard part is when the other racers are coming around the track, you must hit the leader right after he passes the Start/Finish line. It is best to stay down near the apron of the track until the last few seconds. This will force the pack to stay high on the track and be more predictable. Ideally, the leader will hit the side of your car and catch on fire. You will know if you have successfully done it if the Checkered Flag waves followed by a Red Flag.

If you have not caught on fire yourself, then you will be the only car left on the track and the race will finish after you complete your next lap. I had at least 15 wins with this method by the end of the season and only had to restart a handful of times. My only recommendation is to avoid Road Courses and Short Tracks. They tend to be more of a pain, plus you can afford to skip a race or two when you don’t like the track.

During one season of career using this glitch I obtained this achievement as well as these, all on 90% difficulty

In this game, you are going to use a completely different method for breaking champion difficulty than last year's game. During this career, you can ignore the Shootout, Daytona Duels, and All-Star race as they are non-points races. Go ahead and start up a career and use the following as your settings:

Difficulty: 90%
Race Length: 20 or 30%
Tire Wear: x4
Fuel Mileage: x4
Flags: Off
Damage: Full

With these settings, you can go ahead and get started. The basis of what you are going to be doing is starting the race without bothering to qualify. Then, park your car right away as the field circles around. Your goal is to back up into the field and try to DNF as many cars as possible. As long as the field hits you in the side or rear, your car will not break but theirs will. After every hard crash, a few cars will be taken out and you will move up the field.

As you begin to get a few laps down, it may take you additional laps before it counts you as passing the DNF cars. Also, if you get a flat tire or your engine wear starts becoming critical, pit during the red flag and repair your damage. Keep those two things in mind as you progress in the race. Once you are happy with your position, go ahead and crash yourself head on into another surviving car and it will end you in your current position.

During the season, there are four tracks you want to watch out for, as wrecking the field will bore you to death. These tracks are Bristol, Martinsville, Sonoma, and Watkins Glen. I personally recommend you simulate these races during the career unless you are decent at the game and can muster a strong finish in a 2-5% long race. Use this sparingly! If you simulate too much, you could force yourself to start over from falling outside of the top 10 in points.

Another thing to look out for is glitches (who would have guessed). There are a lot of times where the game will just give you whatever finish they want, and if that happens, remember you can restart a race at any time (even when it is complete) until you get a desired finish. The second type of glitch could actually work in your favor! Occasionally, you will see a checkered flag wave right before a red flag, even if the race is no where near complete. If this happens, you are either going to restart by yourself thanks to the glitch, or with the pack. Either way, the glitch forces the race to end in 2 laps regardless. Therefore, it is best to finish up by yourself and enjoy your free win, or restart if the latter happens and you won't be pleased with your finish.

Last thing to worry about is the chase. Once you make it in, it is in your best interest to write down the drivers in the chase and paint a virtual target on them. There is a big chance you entered the chase with 0 wins (I only had 1 but it was because of the aforementioned glitch), so it is important to take out those competing against you. Personally, I made it my sole goal to continue crashing the field until all 11 other chase drivers were trashed, and then finished ahead of them. That way, no matter what, I was earning more points than them and retaining my points lead. You have to either simulate Martinsville or settle with a bad finish during the chase, please keep that in mind.

As a closing note, always make sure your finish is correct before you advance after a race. If you get critically damaged yourself (it happens often) or you aren't happy with the result, restart restart and restart. There is no penalty to doing this, and once you advance, you can't go back to a race.

Big thanks to bongohawley for initially discovering the method.
