How to unlock the General - Defeated the Strogg achievement in QUAKE 4 - Definitive Guide
Save after every enemy is killed and you still have good health and armor. If you get too damaged, just keep reloading until you get it right (or get lucky).
During boss battles you will probably need to save a dozen times or more.

You are absloutely right! It's time consuming but do-able. I must have saved over 100 times, sometimes 2 -3 times on a tough enemy. One thing worth nothing is that the difficulty achievements do NOT stack in this game. I abandoned one of my campaigns to do General difficulty in hopes that it would retro the rest. It does not. You must play through each difficulty start to finish...

That first video has convinced me to never try this game on general; looks frustrating as hell.

I would add the following tips:
- (the obvious) save often. If after a battle you don't have 5-10 saves on your hard drive you're not saving enough. And do new saves, don't repeatedly save over old ones. It's very possible to save at a point where you're screwed, and will have to go back a save or two.
- Keep moving. This is especially true when you get to the later levels as the enemies tend to fire projectile-based weapons, and so long as you are strafeing (moving sideways) they almost always miss.
- (the most important) AVOID combat whenever possible. Sometimes the best strategy is literally to just run right past the bad guys. More often than not the AI is too stupid to follow you through rooms.
- Make use of the NPC's (the computer controlled guys). Remember tech's can repair your armour and medics your health, by pressing B when near them. Many missions have NPCs that are near invincible, and all NPC's have unlimited ammo. Let them do the hard work, just focus on keeping them alive.
- Use the right weapon for the right situation. Is there only a single tough enemy chasing you? Railgun's great for that situation. Is there a mob of weaker enemies in a room? Use the grenade launcher to clear them out. As well the scope on machine gun is surprisingly powerful and uses ammo sparingly. Many people say use the Dark Matter gun, but I think it's best to save as much dark matter ammo for the final few bosses. I didn't use the DM gun until I fought the network guardian, and even then I left that battle with full DM ammo. The only levels I really used the DM gun on were the final two: Nexus Core and The Nexus.
- Related to the last point, make sure you save as much dark matter ammo and rockets for the final level (The Nexus) as possible. There's 2 dark matter cores at the start of the level, along with 30 rockets. In the first part of the level (when you fight the Makron), use the dark matter gun, about 4 shots will take him down the 1st time, then another 4 will do the 2nd. Teleport to the level above and use rockets to take the shield down (1 rocket to the blue bar above the brain will lower the shield), then get 1 DM shot off before the shield goes back up. Save ON A NEW SAVE after each successful hit. Last level is actually pretty easy if you have the DM ammo & rockets.
Personally I did Corporal, Lt., and General difficulties at the same time. What I did is play a level on Lt. to get a feel for the level and find out where the various ammo packs, armour, etc are, and where are spots you can avoid combat, then after I beat the level on Lt I'd go back and do it on General (and then do a 3rd on Corporal to work towards that achievement). Really helps a LOT, though it is tedious.
As well there's two guides that can help a bit for tips:

More than anything this achievement is about perseverance and determination more than it is about skill. Just keep chugging away, and you'll get there eventually.

The difficulty achievements do not stack
The idea of this guide is to let you know some of the easier ways of doing this achievement. There is an excellent guide that I have given a link to that explains each of the levels. What it doesn’t do is let you know when you have to work for it and when you can just sit back. That’s what this guide is about.
Basic Tips
A) Save often
B) Always ask Tech and Medic to keep you topped out (B Button)
C) Don’t forget that you can sometimes backtrack on yourself, so if you pass Health Packs and Ammo you can get them when required.
D) Zooming in (LT) with Machine Gun will (sometimes) take out enemies without them moving, especially if they are at a distance.
E) You don’t always have to kill everyone who is in your way and there are no infinite respawns.
F) Keep an eye on shots being fired at you. There is often a pause while they reload which is the best time to shoot.

Act 3
Operation Last Hope.
Nothing to tell in this level.
Data Storage Terminal.
At the start you’re with Tech Shockley. He’ll get killed by the Grunt in the first tunnel, unless you kill it first. I used my Hyperblaster. If you lose any health there is a Health Station at the start. Shockley is OK in the next few rooms, but sometimes gets killed. Don’t worry too much he’s not with you for long. When you pick up the Dark Matter gun you’ll have fun. I hid in the corner (left of door you entered the room through) and use Grenades, Dark Matter and Hyperblaster.
Data Storage Security.
When you meet the first Iron Maiden let your guys take care of her, while you dodge the Rockets. For the next part try and keep Tech Rutger alive as long as possible. I think the game doesn’t allow him to stay alive to the end as I couldn’t do it (General Difficulty). The only other tip is that when you get to the lift, you can’t activate it till the Iron Maidens are dead. I ran back through the level till I got into the corridor (near Ammo dump) and then when they came in I used the Dark Matter gun to take them out.
Data Storage Terminal – Return.
This level isn’t too bad until you get to a room with two Light Tanks and a lift in the middle. I used up over 20 Rockets to kill them on General. Best tactic is to try and kill one of them then run backwards around the room so you can keep putting shots into the other one. The rest is fine. When you get outside move forward and stand behind the wall and Cpl Rhodes will clear everyone out. He stays behind to guard tower, so he can’t be killed.
Tram Hub Station.
You’re on your own at the beginning of this level, so clear the first couple of area’s but watch out for the Light Tank who charges you. What I did was run all the way outside and let the Tech and Medic deal with him as they can’t be killed, then went back in and collected all the Ammo. When you get back to them, let them do all the work till you need to go and activate the bridge. The most effective way to kill the two Beserker’s was Grenades. Once back downstairs let your two helpers clear the way for you. You’ll reach an area where you can see the tram. Its Blaster time again. Get rid of the Tactical’s and then collect all Ammo you can find. Blaster the next few and keep going till you meet Cpl Cortez. He’s needed for the story and so he‘s not likely to die. I just used the Blaster till Cortez stays behind. Next you’ll crawl through a tunnel. At the end jump up then after you hear the enemies, drop back into the tunnel. Blaster the guy on the ledge in front of you then move out and run around to the right. I never killed the Grunt, just ran past it into the next room. In this room, run straight ahead into the corner (red glow) and stay there. The two Beserker’s stand there, but don’t do any great damage. I took them out with Rockets as there is another crate near the door. The other guy got the Blaster treatment. When you leave this room run through the pipe and then go left through the door, don’t kill anything. Flick the two switches and jump on the platform. Don’t worry if the Grunt you didn’t kill knocks some health off you, go through the door to the right for Health and Armour. Blaster your way to the end. Just to let you know, I had full Ammo for all guns except the Dark Matter (I had 16), full health and 90 Amour by the end of this level.
Tram Rail.
Very easy, just blast everything in sight.
Data Processing Terminal.
In this level there are Teleporters (Look like Disco Balls). Shoot them to stop enemies using them.
Ammo at the start of this level. (How many Rounds)
Machine Gun (50), Shotgun (24), Hyperblaster (100), Grenades (10), Nail Gun (50), Rockets (20), Railgun (20), Lightning (160) plus Large Armour and Health Packs.
After collecting anything you need and going up the lift you enter a room with a Gladiator at the back. Blaster him then take out the Teleporter’s that are left and right. The next room take out the Teleporter (back right) first then deal with all enemies. On the way back you’ll have a fight. I used 5 Dark Matter to get rid of everything except the Light Tank. Then used Railgun till he dropped. Door does not open till everything is gone. Next you’ll meet up with Sledge and enter an area where you must Active A Lift. When you hit the button, run to the right (button behind you) and get rid of the Teleporter. Then just see if Sledge has it in him to kill the 3 Spiders that come out. I saved after each one died and then if Sledge got killed, I just reloaded and put 2 Rockets into them to help him. He managed really well to be honest.
Data Processing Security.
In the first part of this level the only the Berserker caused Sledge any trouble (i.e. killed him) the rest he dealt with as usual. After going down the lift I used my Blaster to assist Sledge as he got killed when I was doing TA. After aligning the laser (after you kill the two Iron Maidens) you enter a room. Shoot the teleporter that’s in the far corner and get ready for another two Maidens. Sledge can take them out, but you need to keep near him or he will die. Next you’ll get a Light Tank, which he takes out easily. Health, Armour and Ammo will be available on your way to the tower, which is next. Once outside at the top its best to be outside. I know it sounds crazy, but it gives you room to move and dodge stuff. I helped out Sledge till there was only one left then ran and activated the switch. Then just walk out of the level.
Data Processing Terminal – Return.
Nothing to say.
Data Networking Terminal.
If you can keep your three guys alive (just reload till you have them all) this level is a breeze. Just make sure you take out Teleporters as soon as you enter rooms.
Data Networking Security.
Nothing to say about the beginning of this level, except when I went across the broken bridge part I just ran through the next room as quick as I could to avoid wasting Ammo. Once you get to the roof it’s all about how quick you can kill him. I used Dark Matter and Rockets. There are 8 Dark Matters to the left side of the platform. I went in with 23 and came out with 19, so not too bad really. There is plenty of Health on the way out
Nexus Core.
This is the second last level and it can be very difficult in places. The idea is to save as much of the “Big” weapons till the last level. There are a few places that I did my usual tricks, most Tacticals I took out with the Blaster, once the bigger enemies had been dealt with. When you reach the room where you have to fight off the Light Tanks, Heavy Hover Tanks etc, I used up all my Dark Matter ammo and a lot of Rockets, but you’ll pick up plenty more before the last battle if you don’t use them anymore. In the last part of this level (the long room leading to the exit) I just ran down the room and picked up Ammo/Health in the room before hitting the exit while jumping around the brutes trying to kill me.
Here is a video (amazing work to watch) that gives you an idea of enemies, route and places to get Health Ammo etc.
The Nexus.
This is so easy compared to the rest of the game. I just used Dark Matter and Rockets to do this. After using Dark Matter to kill off the Makron I went upstairs and where there is a Health Station on the wall (after topping up) I just stood in the corner just after it and sent Rockets into the Brain till it was gone. Nothing hit me at all. Everytime the shield came back up I saved it, just in case I got hit. Once it’s gone … that’s it.
End Of The Game.

The Lieutenant - Defeated the Strogg achievement in Quake 4 worth 131 pointsCompleted the game with the rank of Lieutenant.
The Corporal - Defeated the Strogg achievement in Quake 4 worth 68 pointsCompleted the game with the rank of Corporal.

End Of The Game.
save often is the key. also, only save if you have good ammo, health and armor. as previously mentioned save AFTER EACH BATTLE.
here are some tips for General:
- listen for sounds. each enemy makes a distinct sound when close.
- use your machine gun single shot w/ scope. this not only conserves ammo, but makes headshots from distance much easier. dont forget, you can still move around when in scope view.
- aim for the HEAD!!!
- use Lightning gun on Iron Maidens, or later on, just use Dark Matter gun
- railgun is dominant on other difficulties, but it wont do one shot kills on General so use it sparingly or die.
- dont be afraid to retreat. sometimes triggering enemies, then retreating is the best method to use.

I post this on the general difficulty as most people will look for guide on the hardest setting. So im hoping that people see it here and may use it.Not sure if this is the right place to post it but im sure it will make its way there.Apologies for not being a guide.
There is a way to unlock the achievement for Lieutenant - Defeated the Strogg if you keep the game save for Final Act with the Brain Boss at the end.
All of this must be done using the General difficulty save.
Use the save you have for the act boss and hurt it until it is almost dead.Make a save then die and while the loading screen is up , sign out and sign in with another account. before the game loads you back into the levelThe game will register you on spawn as on Lieutenant.Die again and sign in with your main account then kill the
boss.
I have had this little secret for 3yrs so sorry if i missed anything. You can make a save while on the other account to be safe while ingame incase you think you made a mistake.

Alright, this isn't as challenging as the first boss fight. Three to Four Dark Matter Gun shots on the first form of the Makron will hopefully kill him if they are good shots. If not, switch to homing rockets or the nail gun. His second form gets a bit trickier, try to conserve rockets and use the Dark Matter Gun though, you'll need a ton of rockets for the end. Just strafe jump and hide behind the pillars, emerging to nail him with the DMG whenever possible. The Brain form is once again easy, shoot the top of the brain by the blue pillar with a rocket, then unload as fast as you can into the brain. Rockets are generally found in the corners of the top if you run low on health. Be sure to keep moving when you are on top though, on General the units that spawn are much more deadly, such as the Heavy Tanks, Judges, and strogg infantry with Railguns. Save everytime you kill one form of the boss with as much health as possible, you will need at least 125 health and 50 armor to beat the brain easily, if not, repeat until finished!
