How to unlock the Grim Reaper achievement in RESIDENT EVIL 2 - Definitive Guide

First of all, in order to unlock The 4th Survivor you need to reach the real ending. This is done by playing both scenarios in their logical order, which is:

Leon A - Claire B or Claire A - Leon B

Once you've done this, you unlock this special game mode.

I managed to complete it in 10:14, with a First Aid Spray to spare, even with a couple of major screw ups (I forgot I had a SMG full of ammo until the very end), but the strategy I follow in this video I made is relatively consistent.

The 4th Survivor is the final test to prove you have understood very well every gameplay mechanic of Resident Evil 2, how the enemies behave, and what is the best way to deal with them. You also need to know where to fight, and where to flee. Also, know that there is not any item pick-ups. You have to go from the starting point (Sewers) to the very end (R.P.D. front door) without being able to pick up anything, as there is not any items to be grabbed. Be warned.

Also, you need to know where are the:
*Rooms where you just avoid the enemies
*Rooms where you should throw a frag grenade/flash bang
*Rooms where is acceptable being grabbed by an enemy and just lose a bit of health

These are the best uses I found for every weapon you start with:

-Pistol: Headshot zombies to stun them and run through them without being grabbed
-SMG: Same as the pistol, but way less consistent, as it does less damage and is much more unaccurate. Another use would be to kill dogs
-Shotgun: Use it to consistently kill zombies via headshot, specially the ones who block your way
-Magnum: Use it to stun Mr. X the first time you see him and to kill Lickers with 3-4 shots

I recommend you to mix the two big gunpowders with the yellow ones in order to get more shotgun ammo.

These are the heal items you start with:

-First Aid Spray: Gets you back to full health
-Herbs mix (Red + Blue): It removes poison, gives you temporary poison immunity, and it boosts your defense. Use it to tank enemy hits in certain situations
-Herbs mix (Blue + Green): It heals you a bit, and removes poison
-Herbs mix (Blue + Green + Red): It heals you back to full health, gives you poison immunity, and boosts your defense. This is the most important healing item you have, and you should use it in a clever way. The ideal use would be when you are very low on health (so you're not wasting it) and there's a huge room full of enemies ahead that you need to tank (allow them to hit you/get bitten/whatever)

Also: if you feel there's something more missing here, just let me know, and I'll improve this solution even more. Cheers, and good luck, guys!

Hey @Michel, I updated the solution with an explanation of the healing items you start with and what I think would be the best/optimum uses for them. Your help was appreciated.

I had never realized that the plant guys were one-hitters. This makes a huge different in any run especially when you try to run past them and run out of defense items.

Fuck my life I fucking this mode and other modes like this. This is not what we have been doing for the whole game - scavenging and taking our time. Fuck this mode. Just got the cheevo - thx for the advice OP but I’m not going no lie, your run looked a tad easier - there were parts where I get grabbed and you don’t :(

Thanks for the guide. IGN has a text guide up that I followed step by step to get the achievement if you want to link it in your guide. I would but I don't know how redface. Good tips in your guide though. I'd definitely save 2 grenades and a full shotgun for that last stretch. 1 grenade for the plant if you get grabbed and 1 for the group of zombies, the shotty to finish them off.

I got this on my 4th try using the IGN guide. Died at the plant, then the hoard, then thought the door at bottom of the stairs was the exit, then my 4th run I was in danger and had 1 shell in my shotgun when I hit the gate. I swear I had to pull my underwear outta my butthole. I ain't been so shook since "mile high club" on MW2.

One tip that I suggest doing: the smg is very good towards the end, use it on zombies that are in your way, shoot them in the legs until they fall down and run past them, you have quite a bit of ammo and you never really use it if you follow the guide above. Anyway nice guide and good luck everyone.

For people who are having trouble with this, Bawkbasoup on Twitch speed runs this game mode right now and has a current PB of less than 7 minutes. He plays on PC so for Xbox players can see the different types of strats and all the different RNG involved in this mode. He also has a Discord server for all of us Resi / horror fans and the link is in his Twitch page description. He posts his WR on Youtube as well.

Did it yesterday by following a no-damage run video on YouTube. It was HARD! Died several times before I figure out that without grenades/flash bombs the final area was pretty much un-pass-able. There is also an Ivy zombie there so make sure you have one sub-weapon with you before you run forward.

If you get to the courtyard area (where the Helicopter crashed) and you have no grenades you will not get past it. I had to unequip them beforehand to stop me from using them, I did it with just one grenade but I wished I had two as the staircase after is not fun either.

It's possible to get past the courtyard with no defensive items but HIGHLY advise against it. Was at full health and used the red+blue herbs to get my defense up before going in. Stunned the G with the magnum and was grabbed 4+ times at least by the zombies. Luckily, the Ivy zombie ignored me completely.

Still, it was super rough. Having at least a flashbang or granade there would have been a godsend so save at least one or two, even if it means taking damage.

Got a time of 10:12. You don't need to use the shotgun until you get to the police station, and you have plenty of ammo to spare (assuming you use the gunpowders to make shotgun ammo).

I do NOT recommend following this video. Some of those strats are very RNG based, and some of his routing is TERRIBLE, for example, through the parking garage, he goes completely the wrong way and ends up having to go through 5x more zombies. I recommend looking up some videos by optinoob on YT.

@odiedodie You're right, pal. The RNG of the enemies behavior can screw you up big time. I gotta admit I got lucky in a couple situations (I had to resort to use a flash bang in the zombi who grabbed me when I failed to kill the Licker). But, I do have to insist: with this method/route I've been able to complete the minigame several times, with similar times (around 10 minutes each try).

Have no clue how speedrunners do the crazy shit they do. They just run past and shoot zombies in the head once. I do the same and the fuckers still attack me, I shoot them while they are in their lunge/grab animation like told but not, it doesnt stun them. I unload an entire smg round in a zombies face and it still latches onto me. Dont know why im so shit at this RE, 7 and 8 were a cake walk compared to this.

as a tip for when you are in the exit of the sewers with the 2 giant thingies, use the blue and red herb, stick to the right wall and let the right one grab you (if you are lucky you can avoid him). The option to use a knife or grenade will show up but just don't use it, let them use their acid attack (which wont poison you). The rest is pretty much trying to run and avoid anything you can (I always ignored Mr. X and he didn't give me any problems) so I would recommend saving the magnum bullets instead of trying to deal with him

it's possible to run past every single enemy most of the way. the first licker in the corridor can easily be dodged running up the left side, then move to the right and it misses u on it's return and u can easily avoid it. use flashbang in first dog room for easy escape. but u can just run past second zombie if rng is on your side. first enemy that grabs u is the 2 g virus embryo things in the sewers. after that the licker on the ceiling in the room with the crawling zombie, magnum shoot it twice and u can run saving ammo, the g embryo thing on the roof outside can easily be ran past, take a wide birth. only time I needed to use flashbangs were first dog room, 2nd time u see mixter x on the 2nd floor. and grenades for the final horde outside.

Just a few of things I do differently.

The crawling zombies can just be run past easily enough, especially the first one in the sewer.

The gangway area after the first licker you can run past all these zombies as they get up or are facing a wall. You can try running past the first licker as well or give one blast with the shotgun.

The car park area run straight towards the white car on your right, throw a flashbang and you can run past the zombies.
The next area you can just walk normal speed past the zombie on the floor and the licker on the ceiling won't bother you. As you turn left you can run for the door.

When you see Mr x again on the stairs might be worth stunning him, if you get grabbed by zombies here take the hit and use health.

The plant zombies are worth spraying with the SMG, try and hit the orange bulbs to stun or kill them

After the library just sprint past the zombie dog in the main hall.

When near the balcony with the sewer mutant run around him on the right as you enter the room, circle him anti-clockwise to the stairs down.

Definitely need a couple of grenades or flashbangs for the courtyard, if you have 3 keep one incase you get grabbed. Use the shotgun or SMG to help clear a path.

In this video guide I will show you how to complete the 4th survivor extra mode. In order to play this mode you will need to complete an A play through and a B play through with either character. Then once that is done you will unlock the true ending and the 4th survivor mode.
You will be running from the beginning to end of this segment with no pick ups at all, just whats in your inventory. So using everything at the right moments is key. Pistol for singular enemies, shotgun for head shots to take out a few back to back, lightning hawk for lickers, knives and grenades for counters plus crowds, and healing items for damage buffs also for surviving tricky spots. I will be pointing out these spots in the video.

I've been playing around trying to figure out a way of getting through this quicker and more easily. If anyone is still struggling, please check out this guide. I honestly think this is the easiest strategy to get through this.

First point, to unlock the mode you have to complete the true ending by doing both an A and B campaign.

General Tips

Have the Magnum equipped generally. Carrying the shotgun seems to give you slighter bigger hitbox and make you easier to grab. The pistol and machine gun aren't really useful unless you're going for a slow no-damage run.

Try to avoid using sub weapons, it's probably better to take a hit than lose a subweapon. If you've used all your grenades in the right places and you get grabbed as you run for the exit go ahead and use the knife. If an ivy grabs you, use a subweapon or it's a one-hit kill.

Where to make good use of the grenades

After experimenting, I've found it's best to use the flashbangs up first. See the guide below for details, but save flash bangs for:-

1. The dark area after the gate but before the licker in Room 7 - Worker's Storage

2. The hoard of zombies in Room 10 - Parking Garage

3. Mr. X and the zombies at the top of the stairs in Room 14 - The West Central Passage

Save the hand grenades for:-

1. The Waiting Room as described in section Room 16 - The Library

2 & 3 The G-mutant, ivies and zombies in Room 18 - East Courtyard See that sections for details, but basically throw the first as far around the corner as you can when you approach the G mutant, then roll the second into the cluster of zombies with the ivy.

Here's the strategy. It went a bit wrong in places in the clip, but that's the beauty of this method - there's room for error. You can make mistakes and still get through it.

Room 1 - Lower Waterway

Once you've slid to the bottom of the slope run to the LEFT of the first zombie, the girl, then keep running and pass the next one on the LEFT. Then turn sharply right and pass the third zombie on the RIGHT. When you get to the ledge, it IS possible to sneak onto the ledge without using a bullet or getting hit, but it's much easier to stun the last zombie with a shotgun round or magnum round. (See Clip)

Room 2 - Control Room

Skate the stairs if you're going for a good time. Once you get to the door to the dog room, you have two choices. The fastest route is to hug the wall to your right, but there's a high risk of getting tagged by a dog. The safer route is to run diagonally to the right of the door, towards the left side of the room, then turn sharply to the opening where you drop down. This should allow you to get through unscathed. (See Clip at 1:40)

Room 3 - Monitor Room & Treatment Pool Room

Just run past the zombies feeding on your right and head out the door to the Treatment Pool Room and the bridge. Run towards the girl zombie and give her one shotgun or magnum round to stun her then turn left across the bridge. Same again for the guy zombie on the bridge. Jink and weave left to right to try and avoid the dogs. This is just a matter of practice. You should be able to get through this room using two rounds and losing no health with some practice and good RNG. You'll see this went horribly in my clip, but using this strategy you CAN make mistakes and still put a successful run in. (See Clip at 2:05)

Room 4 - Central Hub

Run or stair skate down the stairs and at the bottom run straight ahead to avoid the crawler. Just before you get to the fence turn sharp left and head for the tunnel down to the Bottom Waterway Overpass. As you enter the tunnel keep running and hug the right wall. When you see the female zombie rising just through the doorway, try to run around the right of her and hug the right side of the next bridge. If you're lucky, you'll get through without taking a hit. If you run it right and you're unlucky, you might take one bite. (See Clip at 2:31)

Room 5 - Upper Waterway

Once across the bridge, run or stair skate up the steps. When you get to the top equip the magnum and drop into the water. As you approach keep to the right. When the distant one to your left rises out of the water and starts groaning - shoot it, then run past the closer one on the right hand side. DON'T shoot the closest one! For some reason this basically doesn't work. You have to shoot the distant one. (See Clip at 2:52)

Room 6 - Lower Waterway Overpass

Climb out of the water and run past the rising zombie in the corner. If the next zombie is on the red steps, stun him with a shotgun or magnum round and run past. Otherwise, run straight up the steps and take a wide arc around him to get to the Worker's Break Room with the elevator. (See Clip at 3:26)

Room 7 - Worker's Storage

Once you're out of the elevator run up the steps. Make sure you have a flashbang equipped. It IS possible to path through the dark area full of zombies (Underground Stairs 1F)without using anything and without being grabbed. I find the pathing really hard though and rarely succeed. Much safer to open the gate, roll a flashbang in and run past. (See Clip at 3:50)

Room 8 - Machinery Room 2F

There are three ways of dealing with the licker. You can lure it back towards the steps you just came up. You'll find it's tethered and can't turn the corner around the steps. You can then kill it at your leisure, this takes time though and can waste ammo. Option 2 is to use the licker knife strats. For this you have to have the knife equipped then get to the side and behind the licker and start slashing away, trying to keep him stun locked. As long as you can stay behind it's surprisingly easy to kill a single licker this way. The preferred and fastest option is to run up the right side of the corridor towards the licker. If you're lucky he'll raise his left claw and leap towards you, so as you see the claw raise jink to your left and run past him. His leap will often have him fly so far down the corridor he can't catch up. Turn the corner tight, then keep running past the zombies as you head to the car park.(See Clip at 4:07)

Room 9

Once you're clear of the licker hug the hug the right wall to run past the rising zombie and get through the door, the licker can't follow. Then keep running past all the rising zombies trying to keep your distance. When you get to the area at 4:57 with the dogs and the zombies, just keep up the pace and run past them before they get up. There is a risk one of the dogs will tag you, so once you've rounded the corner jink and weave a bit and get on the ladder ASAP. (See Clip at 4:32)

Room 10 - Parking Garage

Once you get to the top of the ladder turn 45 degrees to the right and head to the right of the pillar with B1 written on it. Shoot the first zombie with a magnum or shotgun round and sprint between the rest of the zombies who should drift apart if you're lucky. (See Clip at 5:05) A safer tactic that's less reliant on good RNG is to throw a flashbang here. As long as you haven't used one as a sub weapon at this stage, it's well worth investing one here.

Room 11

Once you're out of the parking lot, in the East Central Passage B1 you'll have two dogs approaching from the kennels, a crawling police lady and a licker on the ceiling. The fastest way is to sprint straight ahead for the exit, shooting the licker in mid-air with the magnum to stun it, then rushing for the door. I'll be honest you have to have the reflexes of a cat to pull this off. I've done it, but very rarely. I say try to run past the crawling police woman then blast the licker so it falls and run past before it can pick itself up. Again, this went horribly in the demonstration clip, but it's a great time to use the first aid and if you've been following the guide you should have only used a handful of shotgun and/or magnum rounds and one flashbang. If you have been tagged or bitten a couple of times the First Aid Spray will sort you out. (See Clip at 5:21)

Room 12 - The Break Room Hallway

Keep running for the RPD, when you get to the corner at 5:56, Mr.X will be coming. Sprint towards the left corner of the corridor, then as you pass the wall turn sharp right. If it goes well Mr.X will take a swing, but miss allowing you to run through the Watchman's Room, little office into the RPD. Shoot the guy hanging around just outside the East Office door and enter the East Office. You should be able to run to the left of the long row of desks, dodging around the zombies and heading out into the corridor on the other side. Keep running as you enter the corridor and weave around the two zombies groping for you.(See Clip at 5:40)

Room 13 - The Main Hall

There are two options here, heading to the left towards the West Office is faster, but riskier. The safer route is to go right of the main desk as in the clip then run past the zombie as you enter the West Office In the West Office have a shotgun or magnum equipped and turn sharp right at the bottom of the little flight of steps and blast the guy in front of you. (See Clip at 6:25)

Room 14 - The West Central Passage

You have two choices in here. There's a licker, so you can either walk really slowly and carefully - forgetting a good time, or you can leg it. The choice is often not given to you as Mr.X CAN be hot on your heels at this stage. In the clip I run for it and take one swipe, which is acceptable. If Mr.X isn't hot on your heels he'll definitely be at West Stairway 2F with a bunch of zombies. When you climb the stairs, throw a flashbang before you get to the top and run past Mr.X and the zombies into the Men's Locker Room (See Clip at 6:45)

Room 15 - West Hallway 2F

Run through the Women's Locker Room into the West Hallway 2F. There'll be two ivy zombies here. Have the shotgun or magnum equipped and blast the bulbs on both of them. You'll hear them squeal if it worked. Then sprint past while they're stunned and enter the Lounge. There'll be zombies bashing at the door, so try to run towards the right edge of the door. If you get it right the zombies will lunge out, allowing you to slip into the Library behind them without taking a bite. (See Clip at 7:13)

Room 16 - The Library

Run through The Library into Main Hall 2F. Sprint around towards the Waiting Room but hug the right balustrade to avoid activating the doggie at the top of the steps. In the Waiting Room equip a hand grenade and wait for the second knock, then throw the grenade at the door onwards. It should stun or kill the zombies allowing you to sprint past to East Stairway 2F Here's there's a licker. You can try and bait him, then dodge and run around or walk slowly, but be warned if you take your time here, Mr.X is likely to show up. Head up the stairs and use the shotgun to take the zombie on the stairs knees off. (See Clip at 7:47)

Room 17 - Balcony

At the top of the stairs head out onto the balcony. Run straight ahead, then turn sharp left and try to get behind the G mutant to the ladder without being grabbed. There's a dog up here too, but if you're quick and you get around the G, he won't get you. Once you're down the ladder to Roof you can either walk slow and avoid activating the Lickers or you can sprint for it. Try not to get grabbed by the crawlers outside the door to East Hallway 2F Sprint down the hallway until you can get to the door to the Fire Escape then head out and down to the East Courtyard.

Room 18 - East Courtyard

Run straight past the zombie banging on the fence. As you approach the G mutant throw a hand grenade to stun it - try to aim it a little bit around the corner for maximum affect. Then run into the blast area and throw another grenade towards the Underpass this should kill or stun any remaining zombies or ivy zombies.

Finale - Underpass

At this point if everything has gone well you should have one flashbang, a knife and a few shotgun rounds, magnum rounds or both. Run past the last few zombies, taking them down with a quick shot to the knees if they're in your way. If you have a spare flashbang or grenade then chucking it to the bottom of the underpass would be a nice tactic. Word of caution, Mr.X is likely catching up with you at this stage - listen for his footsteps. Run up the steps, turn sharply left and head the gate. Hey presto - 4th Survivor = completed!

Use this guide and you should be able to complete it in what took me 4 tries. Just have a general understanding for the enemy mechanics and don't panic when you take damage. Try to save the mixed B+G+R herbs as your last recovery item and you should be able to tank through the last section of this game mode if you were to misuse some resources earlier on. Happy hunting!

Highly recommend a mix of these two guides to help you out with this trophy. Be patient, you will die a few times but the rng isn't really too bad if you follow these videos for the most part.

The one for beginners got me the trophy on first try! And I’ve been really struggling. Thanks so much!

This should be a gold trophy.

This achievement is really not as bad as it seems on the first run. I managed to get this done on my 5th attempt. All of the guides already on here are good, but I've created my own video of this hoping this will help some of you.

The 4th survivor is an extra game mode where you play as a member of an Umbrella special forces team called Hunk and tasked with escaping from Raccoon city. You will begin in the Sewers and have to fight or run your way through the majority of the Sewer complex and then the Police Station to make it to the last helicopter leaving the city. You will have a plethora of items from the start, including decent weapons and ammo, as well as many sub-weapons and healing items. The catch here is that you cannot pick anything up; what you start with is all you have, so you need to make quick decisions and not waste anything. The mode itself can be quite tough, especially on the first few attempts as you get used to a vastly different style of play that you would have been used to from the main campaigns. But it is only a 10-15 minute long game mode so with some practice, it is certainly not impossible. The video below will show you where to go and what to do, should you need it.

To unlock the 4th survivor mode you will need to have fulfilled the requirements of the "Broken Umbrella" achievement, which is to 'Witness the true ending', achieved by completing either Leon's Campaign A, then Claire's Campaign B, OR Claire's Campaign A, then Leon's Campaign B.

You should follow this video. Some enemy location may vary, but the shotgun take care of all the wandering enemies. Also, always, ALWAYS, keep a grenade or two for the final room, also you should have almost all the healing items if you followed the guide. Good Luck!

Go through places with lickers on foot, they are blind and won’t see you, so you’ll save first aid kits and ammo.

This mode opens after completing the main game for any character (Game A) and after the 2nd playthrough for any character (Game B)
Video .
There's no need to rush, we need to get through, not speedrun. So you can kill.
